Writer Jody Houser (Mother Panic, Faith) and artist Gabriel Guzman (Mass Effect, Star Wars) join forces for StarCraft, a new series further exploring the expansive universe of Blizzard's hit video game.
Seen from the point of view of a young, inexperienced engineer, a group of terran space scavengers hope to pull off the job of their lifetimes, ignoring a recent United Earth Directorate treaty to pillage a derelict protoss ship. The scavengers' dangerous plan is compounded by the fact that the protoss ship is in a decaying orbit above a backwater planet. If their time doesn't run out and Dominion police forces don't bust them, will protoss or zerg factions in the outer rim find and execute them?
This miniseries could have been a great space-mistery/horror tale set in the Starcraft setting universe, sadly main characters were really lame to me and you have to suspend your disbelief for good to fully appreciate unarmed scavengers going inside an alien ship in a military restricted zone and young engineers without combat training wrestling and toppling full armoured soldiers... Oh, good grief.
An Aliens approach to Starcraft. What I liked about this is you didn't need to know anything about Starcraft to enjoy this. It's a bit of your standard trapped on a spaceship with an alien monster trope but it's done well for the most part. There's one part where a normal guy pushes over a guy in a battlesuit which is pure nonsense but the rest is solid. Houser's followup in Starcraft: Survivors is where the creative team really hits its stride. Gabriel Guzmán's art is very good.
While this is the type of fun I like to have I feel like the story and art could have lived up to much higher expectations. The mystery could have lasted out longer and not have had a vid-feed reveal. The art could have pushed the limits of how dark the Starcraft universe can be. Together they work well and do well, but it feels like it still has reserves. We gotta tap that out.
I would still love to see more. If Blizzard decides to put some more backing behind graphic novels I will be there to receive them. This is quality stuff. Still need to raise the bar higher for both quality and quantity while attending to both. Keep on rockin!
*Second review*
I think my review above is in reference to another comic, or I read this and totally forgot xD
By no means am I good at the Starcraft video game. I do love the game though, had tons of fun and cheated my way to many a victory with show me the money, food for thought, power overwhelming and plenty of other commands…
I still play SC II to this day (almost 99% custom – specifically TD games). The campaign is fantastic. Rednecks in space, Starship Troopers, Kinda Warhammer 40kish, it just has the stereotypical militaristic space soldiers vibe. It’s unique enough and fun. So when I saw two comics on clearance I had to bite. Zergling style.
The plot is strikingly similar to one of the side missions in Legacy of the Void, er, something. I’m almost certain. This could be the prelude leading up to it, can’t say for certain, it’s been years…
All in all, it’s decent. The art isn’t anything to write home about. With some Starcraft knowledge it ain’t bad, if I had never play Starcraft I wonder how this might look. Probably more interesting.
I have the second comic so let’s see what else is in store!
Been playing the games since 1998. Got over 3k hours in SC2. Always wanting more and this delivers. Art is some of the best and the story is already interesting.
This is such a generic plot of raiders try to rob a ship and find something hiding. Not sure when this takes place, perhaps during the Brood War Expansion from SC1? Very quick read and very forgetable.
A good story for everyone who likes Alien-type stories. No need to now much about the StarCraft universe. There are sure some weak plot resolutions but overall it was a quick, action-packed read with nice art. Will read the follow up when it comes out.
