From the author of Labor of Love and The Boyfriend Project comes another beach-perfect novel of fun, friendship, and the boys of summer, great for fans of Stephanie Perkins, Lauren Barnholdt and Susane Colasanti. Dani’s a tomboy, totally useless when it comes to romance. But this summer she and her best friend have a foolproof plan to change all that. Both of their families will be hosting summer league baseball players—a whole league of potential boyfriends!
Rachel Hawthorne, who also writes as Lorraine Heath and Jade Parker, is the daughter of a British beauty (her mother won second place in a beauty contest sponsored by Max Factor® during which she received a kiss from Caesar Romero-who played the Joker on the old Batman TV series) and a Texan who was stationed at Bovingdon while serving in the air force. Lorraine was born in Watford, Herts, England, but soon after moved to Texas. Her "dual" nationality has given her a love for all things British and Texan. She enjoys weaving both heritages through her stories.
When she received her BA degree in psychology from the University of Texas, she had no idea she had gained a foundation that would help her to create believable characters—characters that are often described as “real people.” She writes for both adult and young adult readers. She received a Romantic Times Career Achievement Award for Americana historicals. Her novels have been recognized with a RITA, Romance Writers of America’s most prestigious award for excellence, a HOLT medallion award honoring outstanding literary fiction, a Romantic Times Reviewer’s Choice Award, five Texas Gold Awards, the Golden Quill Award, the Rising Star Award as well as other awards and recognitions. Her novels have been selections of the Doubleday and Rhapsody Book Club. Her novels have appeared on bestseller lists, including USA Today, Waldenbooks, and most recently, the New York Times.
Sooooo cute! I still don't understand a thing about baseball, but I'm pretty sure I'm a lost cause.
This is a really fun and nice book to relax yourself. I loved the characters, their chemistry, their passion for baseball and the interesting plot. While I must say I didn'f really like the idea that started the story, which was to find a boyfriend for Dani and her best friend, I liked seeing their characters develop and realize that their initial plan had some flaws. They started as kind of superficial, since all they cared about was having a boyfriend, no matter who he was, but actually getting one made them grow a lot and I enjoyed reading about them. There's also development when it comes to Dani's family, since she sees her sister as a superficial beauty pageant when the story begins, but she realizes there's a depth in her she had never suspected.
I've seen this many times, but I love reading about passionate characters. Whether it's about music, literature, arts, sports or maths, I'm often inspired by passionate people. I loved reading a baseball themed book, even though I could never share this passion, but I must admit I wish I had seen a bit more of this passion in Dani. While she talks about how she has baseball posters in her room and how she used to play with her dad, it all seems to stop when she starts thinking about having a boyfriend, because all she can think about then are beautiful abs, arms and faces. I know she's a fan of the sport, but I don't think it's well represented.
I thought Dani and Jason's relationship was adorable. It's very realistic and I could see their chemistry pretty much from the beginning. I love that they have so many things to talk about and that they care a lot about each other ever since they met. I do wish their relationship had been a bit less parent-friendly, because although it was the best thing to do, it felt a bit too perfect for me (parents-wise) and it left me kind of frustrated (which is the big deal, haha!).
I had a really nice time reading this book and I'm definitely still a fan of Rachel Hawthorne!
“The Boyfriend League” is aptly named. Our main character, Dani, wants nothing more than a boyfriend for the summer. Not having ever been in a relationship, Dani imagines having a gorgeous baseball player boyfriend on her arm. Going into her senior year of high school, Dani thinks it is about time she and her best friend, Bird, seriously pursue relationships. In order to meet more men, Dani convinces her parents to invite a visiting baseball player to live with them. The local team ran out of locations for the players to stay and asked for local families to take them in. Dani believes that her new “roommate” will take her out to events and introduce her to his fellow teammates. The first step in her master plan is to make friends with this ballplayer. However, once the new player, Jason, arrives, Dani’s plan goes off the rails. Instead of wanting him to introduce her to his friends, Dani just wants him. But, Dani is awkward with Jason, lacks self-confidence, and her parents would never approve. What is a girl to do? “The Boyfriend League” is a clean YA/NA romance read. I read it in one night and thoroughly enjoyed the writing style. Hawthorne is able to paint a picture in each scene. Well-done!
This was a super quick, super cute, and super fun read that is just perfect for this time of year when you want something light fun and that will put a smile on your face.
This is the kind of book that gets me into reading more and more and more. I can't seem to put it down. Stopping myself even just for a while to read this may be a kind of sin. Ahhhhhh.
I love the lead female, Dani. She's just so herself. Although she got swayed for a while, but still, she stayed true to herself. And that's what I liked about her. I can relate to her. And I love that she's a girl and a sports junkie at the same time. I am not really for those girls who are so obsessed with fashion and everything. Dani is the perfect balance. just the way I like it. And to top it all of, baseball. Wooo. That's impressive.
And may I just say that I loooooooove Jason? A perfect gentleman, yet he knows when to act. He's gonna make you want more of him. He's such a hottie. A hottie but not a jerk. Just like Dani, jus the way i like it. SO they are absolutely perfect for each other. Oh, and Jason plays great baseball. ;)
I wo'nt be bragging much about this book cause Dani and Jason are what or whom I mostly care about in this book. LOL. But ofcourse I love Dani's Dad and her wise take-out queen Mom. I also learned to like her "beauty queen" sister Tiffany towards the end.
The Boyfriend League is a light teenage romantic story. It's not too heavy and it is perfect for young adults. I need not say more. I just love this book. PERIOD.
Well the book is interesting and the plot is good. I really like that the book is about sports that I don`t know much, because it gave me an insight of baseball and the life of players. The story is about a girl, Danielle, who loves sports, especially baseball. When she reads an article in news paper about The Rattlers baseball team that needs a place where to live while they play game in Summer for three months, she talks her parents in to take one player in their house. So, there comes Jason who she later falls in love with. But she promised her mother she won`t do anything like that. Later she dates Mac, one of the other players, but she doesn`t love her and he just liked how she looked(like her sister, who is Miss Teen Ragland) like one time. Yes, there is a love triangle, kind of. Mac and Dani got together, but didn`t love each other, because Mac loved Dani`s sister, but Dani- Jason. And of course everything was all right when Dani picked Jason. Um, it`s romantic and quite sweet book. I enjoyed reading it.

Danielle loves baseball and boys. This year she is determined to catch a boyfriend when the summer league comes to town. When she sees an ad in the local paper asking for host families for some of the team she talks her parents into letting a player stay with them, on condition that she not fall for that player. Unfortunately, Jason is not only the hottest guy on the team, he is also the only guy that Dani wants to date. What’s a girl to do?
This was a really cute, light read. I enjoyed Dani’s tomboyish character and the situation she found herself in. The book was lighthearted and clean, a good YA novel. The only thing I would have liked is if Dani had been a little older, or Jason a little younger. She is going to be a senior in high school and he is just starting college. It probably isn’t a big deal, but it would have been nice if they were the same age. Other than that, I thought the book was well done. This was my first Hawthorne book and I definately think I'll be checking out her other works.
A really cute, summery, YA romance. I found Dani to be likable, and I liked her relationship with her sister. She and the love interest were cute together. I feel like in a lot of these types of books, the love interest is kind of a jerk, but this guy was really sweet.
The book is very dated though due to numerous now defunct pop culture references, such as the love interest telling Dani he went to Blockbuster and rented movies for them to watch, or Dani comparing her sister to Bree from Desperate Housewives, which has been off the air a long time now. She also has a poster of Chad Michael Murray on her bedroom wall - whatever happened to him?
"'I'll be okay alone in the backyard.' He stepped off the treadmill. 'I'm going to go shower.' He waited a heartbeat, like he expected me to say I'd be happy to keep him company in the shower, too."
What a fun read! I loved Daniella and Jason's relationship. Jason was such a shy character, which made me love him even more. Daniella and her craze for chocolate cookie dough ice cream. which I adore as a matter of fact, and her attention to Jason's well being was especially adorable!
Overall, The Boyfriend League was a fun, summer read. It just so happens that I am also on my first week of Summer break, just like Daniella (What a coincidence!) The reason for 3 stars is the story is overused and it's not something I haven't heard before. I suppose I'm just a really picky reader nowadays. I feel like I am rereading the same story and that if you were to compare all the chick lit books that I've read recently, you could EASILY find a common story line-The girl is a somehow different from her best friend or her sister and was never noticed before "that summer" or "that spring or winter break." The boy, the main boy, somehow begins to like the simple yet different girl that she is. BUT, there just so happens to be another boy who notices her as well. The both fight over her blah blah blah but the girl likes the boy who is shy or different form the rest or the boy who the author chooses (: It's not that I don't like the storyline, it's just overused.
I do like how Hawthorne made Dani, nickname for Daniella, have the idea that a baseball player should stay at their house. Usually in chick-lits like these the best friend or sister decides what will "happen" in the summer. I also liked how Dani was not shy but Jason was. There was something about Jason and Dani's relationship that seemed communal or public. I say that figuratively because their relationship may have been hard to notice at first, but I think, if you were in your right mind, that their relationship was SO FREAKING OBVIOUS! Of course the parents knew though, so win for the parents of the literary world!
Though I've never been a big fan of Baseball, I'm fully aware of the Baseball frenzy--I'm referring to how hot Baseball boys are (That's as shallow as this review is going to get! Sorry (: ) It's true. Jason was one hunk...
It was a fun read and if you need a good summer book to pass time or a book that makes you feel little bits of envy or jealousy every few pages or even a book that makes you laugh, The Boyfriend League is the book for you!
Dani has always wanted a boyfriend, with the baseball season just starting and a whole baseball team coming into town she saw her chances. She talked her parents into offering their house as temporary resident to one of the players with the promise that she won't be falling in love with him. She plans on using the resident boy into introducing her to other baseball players. Problem with this promise was she never pictured that Jason would be very good-looking. She struggles to stop herself from liking the boy staying in a room across from hers only to be stuck in a wrong relationship. Will she finally end up with the right guy before the season ends?
This book is very HILARIOUS. It is FUN to read. Summer romance is written all over it. It is not the serious type of book that is serious and has mysteries. It is a happy book about a teenager trying to find love while also confronting her own issues. She has insecurity issues with her sister who is a pageant girl. I think that Jason is really HOT and a very good guy. I like that he is considerate. Dani is dead on very funny. She puts humor in things that she is in. She is also a very good picture of being true to one's self. Well except for the part where she tried to impress Jason on that first night or not playing baseball with his dad while Jason is playing. But other than those few times she was herself and she did not deny her love for the game. I think Dani's parents are very cool too. The ending of the book was nice. It was a happy ending and let me tell you I am a big fan of happy ending when it comes to romantic novels. This ending though holds a lot of possibilities for the future and I love that.
This book is very fast to read. Read it in four hours. I can't put it down. It was one of those books that you just read for the fun of it. I will read it again just for the fun of it.
I can't really say its the best, but it wasn't that bad.
At first, the idea of just doing this and that for boys made me think that the book would be really shallow and would just be about Dani trying to make a fool out of herself looking for a boyfriend, but its not really. I hanged on, reading and wanting to know what would happen between her and Jason.
I really want to shake her to death because she's really thinking about Mac. And I somehow feel bad for Bird because she can't really see beyond Brandon's hottie face when he really is a good for nothing dude. They don't even end up together, in the end he was just the "summer boyfriend". But they love each other, so I'm moving on.
I felt so sad for Jason, and it really got me when Bird described the way he looks at Dani like "she's something he cannot have". But when it worked out and he moved out for the sake of his sanity because he couldn't possibly keep his hands off Dani, I thought "now that's a great guy there!".
I felt like it kind of dragged out in the end, but I'm glad it ended the way it did.
If you want a light, short, sweet, girly, short book this is perfect for the summer. It made me smile and laugh so much !
This book is about a girl named Dani that loves baseball but she loves boys even more..! The baseball team is coming in the town and needs homes for the players so she founds a great opportunity to get a boyfriend and so does her friend, Bird.
Dani feels like she is always in the shadow of her sister that is a beauty Queen....but not this time cause the HOT pitcher :)) has her eyes on her and so does she...the problem is that she has already found a boyfriend but is it the right one?
I found Dani hilarious and I really liked her personality...You will find this story awkward and relatable and Amazing :))
Add me if u enjoyed this review....Like it if u found it helpful :))))!!!
This book had a cute and heartwarming ending. And it was corny as hell. Seriously, if you didn't see that one coming, you really should remove your cultural blindfold. This stuff simply does not happen in real life. Parents do not agree to let hot (not to mention single) teenage boys stay across the (convienently isolated) hall from their single teenage daughter. And even if they did, what are the chances he's Mr. Right? I mean, the kids are barely past puberty. All Rachel Hawthorne novels are the same. Change the names, change the location, change the thing that single boy and single girl have in common and blammo! She's got a new book! Sure, she's probably well respected and rich as hell, but I like books with more...oh, what's the word?...substance.
This is actually quite a funny book. I loved Dani's humour and what's interesting about this book is that the romance is not overly dramatic. Instead of the usual 'she's my life, he's my life' thing, this book presents itself properly, cute and adorable, that first attraction is well written. Though the plot could be easily guessed, still it's adorable. I remembered laughing at the jokes they've made, and the baseball scenes are prety adrenaline-junking, if you could imagine them just right. One thing about this book is that, it's a bit too short! (Maybe because I just can't get enough of it, ha!) Overall, it's a wonderful read and managed to make my day better. I glad I picked it out and when I started it's absolutely an unputdownable.
*suspiró* aish, que libro más romántico y divertido. Estos libros son mi placer culpable!!! Me enamore de Jason, pero ¿quien no? No es una gran trama, pero estamos hablando de un libro YA si que el chiste se cuenta solo.
Do you remember those all-consuming feelings you had growing up, specifically in high school? When every guy or girl that you dated or had a crush on was probably the one? And one of THE most important things was to have a boyfriend or girlfriend? I’ll admit that I remember feeling that way sometimes, but never really gave into the feelings. I always told myself that the odds of meeting the one while I was in high school were pretty darn slim. I still think I was right.
Rachel Hawthorne perfectly captures those feelings in The Boyfriend League. I felt like I was reliving some of my high school moments (it wasn’t that long ago; I’m only in my 20s), except it turned out much better and definitely less awkward in The Boyfriend League.
The main character, Dani, was refreshing. She was really into baseball (which isn’t my favorite, but beggars can’t be choosers) and that’s a big deal to have a female character be really into sports. She was sarcastic and witty. I found myself full-on laughing during some of her exchanges. The male lead, Jason, was adorable and I want one. The chemistry between Dani and Jason was so sweet.
I will admit the initial premise of The Boyfriend League is kind of ridiculous. It was a bit reminiscent of Summer Catch (with Freddie Prinze Jr. and Jessica Biel). The whole idea of offering your house to a baseball player for the summer seems kind of weird to me, but like I said I’m not into baseball. So maybe that’s pretty normal at the college level.
The Boyfriend League was a quick read. If you’re looking for a clean, sweet young adult book look no further. The Boyfriend League is for you. If you’re already a Rachel Hawthorne fan and you haven’t read The Boyfriend League yet, what are you waiting for? Ultimately I would recommend it, unless you absolutely hate chick lit.
+ light read + Jason was a sweetheart + I liked Dani's relationship with her family. I also liked that her beauty queen sister wasn't a stereotypical bitch and was in fact decent.
- Dani came off as really silly to me. She was so desperate to have a boyfriend--pick a boy, any boy!--that she grabbed the first one who came along and clung to him despite liking someone else. Also, she kept giving the wrong signals and misleading answers to pretty obvious questions from Jason, thus discouraging him, then agonizing over it. - She was also passive as fuck. Slide into a relationship with the first boy who shows a whiff of interest. Sit there waiting for something to happen. Wring hands over other boy. Never actually do anything about it. Anytime anything happened in her boy relationships, it was never she who made the first move. "Maybe something will happen" is her motto.
I absolutely LOVE this book and anything else Rachel Hawthorne has written. I'm pretty sure this has been my thirds time reading it because I love going into Dani's world and being able to actually experience her witty humor and trials in love. What I like best about this book is that it is about someone people can relate to. Dani is far from perfect, having embarrassing moments and times where she doesn't know exactly what to say. Hawthorne provides a real story about a real girl who falls for an extremely hot guy who anyone reading can't help but fall in love with. Just a warning to anyone who picks this up, be prepared for a fun, light read that you won't be able to put down until you've read the last page.
Once in awhile, my 17 year old self appears and I'm in the mood to read a light, fluffy teen romance. This is a story of tomboy Texan, Dani, who is obsessed with boys and baseball. She manages to convince her parents to be a host family for a summer league player--IF she doesn't fall for him. Well, she tries hard not to, but he's everything she wants in a boyfriend.
Dani is pretty true to herself, which I liked. Her older sister is a beauty queen, but Dani is down to earth and she is who she is. I loved some of the things that happened to her and how she handled them. Jason is a great guy--kind of shy, but determined.
This book is sooo cute ♥♥ A perfect fluffy read when your looking for something to cheer you up!:) Dani was a good character to read about and I'm glad she learned things and I wasn't that annoyed from her. It was good to read from her and in a way I guess it taught you things :) Jason was the perfect boyfriend. Cute, nice and he actually had a lot in common with Dani and you could actually see the chemistry. He and Dani had fun doing things and they made a great couple!! One word I'd use to describe this book : Cute ♥♥ I'd recommend this to anyone looking for a cute fluffy light read. Personally, I love reading these kind of books :)
It took me months before I continue to read this book. And to think I love Rachel Hawthorne. Somehow, the idea of giving a shelter for those baseball players just to get a chance of having a boyfriend does not appeal to me.
It was an OK book. With cute moments here and there.
Charming, warm, innocent, endearing book! I had a lot of fun reading it, I absolutely loved ALL the characters!Every page of this book is saturated with passion for baseball and the style of writing is light and pleasant! A perfect book for relaxing and having a great time!
Just found my first summer reading challenge from the public library allll the way back in 2016…. and this book was on it- my introduction to sports romance!! 😂 i remember loving this book and recommending it to everyone. i had my best friend obsessed with it too 😂
A cute book that made me smile as I was reading it. I thougth that Dani and Jason had a connection since they first met. I think it was really cute and I could definately read it over and over again.
