Snow flakes flutter in the sky,
Let me tell you of the day you die.
The world around you concealed in ice,
All that you do comes at a price.”

The first couple of lines of Winter Cursed. I was super proud of them so I shared them with all of my friends in real life. I'm not going to lie. The looks everyone gave me were basically a cross between "are you okay?" and "I thought I knew you" and what they said out loud was "wow that's intense and dark", and I was just like, hey guys- when you're writing a dark fantasy Snow White retelling, things aren't always just sunshine and roses. In fact, there is no sunshine in this book thanks to that dratted eternal winter. But there are roses. Enchanted roses, but roses all the same...

This is a Snow White retelling, and I stayed pretty faithful to the original story. But it is also based off of some Nordic and Celtic mythologies, has lots of ice magic, and a snarky dark prince.

And I'm super excited that this book is coming out soon, so I can share the story with you guys!

Wow. This was way better than I anticapated!

I'm not usually the hugest fan of re-tellings because I often find them predictable, but this one was so good!!

The characters were likable, especially Cerdric, who was my favorite because y'all know me and cynical characters! And I adored how the dwarfs were so unique compared to other re-tellings.

The writing was beautiful, with just the perfect amount of personality and humor to keep me glued to my screen.

This was honestly just an epic read! 4.5 stars

**I was sent a digital copy in exchange for this review, but my opinion is 100% unbiased and completely mine.

I probably shouldn't have stayed up so late - but come on guys I had to finish it! The story was so riveting!! Like Nicki, THAT WAS AMAZING!!

Snow White retelling that was absolutely perfect.

Cedric ~ *dies* He was amazing... also a perfect "dark Lord" that became not so dark in the end.

Elisabeth ~ I gotta say, she was my girl. I'm for Elisabeth all the way! Her beauty.... I can only imagine!

Dwarfs ~ Man you guys don't realize how often I laughed at them! Perfect people for Cedric!!

Description : Wonderful. I can't describe it better.

Overall the story was WONDERFULLY BREATHTAKING!! ( And if you didn't gather that already from the fact that I had to finish it tonight then well... *shrugs* somethings are wrong with you. )

Note : I was given a copy in exchange for an honest review and well... there it is. (Hopefully I'll do a better job of reviewing it in the future . . . because that didn't really help anything!! :P So better RTC!!)

This story is everything a Snow White retelling should be- a recognizable story with twists. The world building is exquisite, and the atmosphere is so strong you can't help but feel it. And the characters- oh, the characters. Cedric the dark prince is a wonderfully sardonic. And each of the dwarves are special in their own way.

Heard there's going to be a full-length sequel. *Squeals*

I was sent a pdf by the author in exchange for a honest review! Thank you so much!
Winter Cursed is a retelling of Snow White and I thought it was quite well done! I really enjoyed this little story and I think it definitely could've been longer!

I could very well picture the icy and dark setting of the story, and I think it was a good mix of descriptions, action and conversations. The retelling aspect was very well done in my opinion. From the looks of the main character, to the dwarfs, to the infamous poisoned apple - there were many little things that made it clear this is a Snow White retelling. But the author also changed quite a few things which fit this story perfectly and were a nice touch!

As for the characters, I loved Prince Cedric, he's dark, arrogant yet charming and probably not the kind of man I'd fall in love with in real life, but funny enough these guys always work out perfectly in books. I also really liked the dwarfs, I think their names felt very dwarf-like (if you can say so^^) and I also liked their warrior-like personalities! Unfortunately, I didn't like our MC Princess Elisabeth that much. For about half of the book she was annoying and kept going on about all the same things, although it was clear to the reader that she was lying to herself. In the second half her character suddenly drastically changed. I liked the 'new' Elisabeth better, but I think the character development should have taken more time. It probably could have been done better if the story was longer.

There were also some grammar and spelling errors, but nobody's perfect. These are the only complaints I have about the book, and even despite these aspects I really enjoyed this quick read and therefore rated it 4 stars! I would definitely recommend it to people who like fairy tale retellings!

I would like to start this review off by thanking Nicki for sending me a copy of it for this review via email. I would of never have found this amazing story of Snow White without a twist or it become my new favorite if it hadn't been for that. So thank you.

I must admit, I've read a lot of books this year but I don't think I've read one that has held my attention so long that I couldn't wait to see what happened next. I received this on the 20th and I'm finishing it three days later. It was so freaking wonderful!

The world building and charters were unlike anything I've ever read before. The dwarfs where funny at times caring at others an so fun to read about. I could imagine each and everyone of them as I read. As well as Cedric. The whole thing was amazing and an honor to read. Plus I liked the twist of the Snow White tail. While many of us grew up hearing in the movie 'her skin was as white as snow' we never actually knew why. The twist of that as well I found stunning and wondrous. Plus how their was three different Kingdoms and to read how they all fell right at the beginning expect for one.

Not many books I read show me a movie in my head as I read them but this one did it, to a T in fact. While I hadn't finished the book yet, at the time I went and ordered a copy of it when we went shopping the other day. Now I can truly say that I'm glad that I did seeing as this I will be re- reading in the future.

While Elisabeth was almost always in need of reassuring it didn't bother me seeing as it was a fairy tale retelling. So in some sense it kind of made sense for her to always need so. But she also didn't keep quit about matters either and she spoke her mind. Rather it was called for or not. But the arguing and bickering between her and Cedric... it was amazing. I found myself laughing out loud at some parts it was so funny.

I also liked the fact that while Cedric kept telling her that he wasn't a good man in the end he turned out to be. So rather he still thinks he isn't well.. it's anyone's guess. Plus I can't help but hope that Elisabeth will turn his words on him in the next one and tell him 'Believe what you will Prince' Seeing as he's always telling her to believe what she will Princess. I think it would be funny.

While, there is a cliff hanger at the end of it, I think I can live without dying emotionally or physically with that. Seeing as if it is as good as this one.. it will be worth the wait.

That ending though!! I love that they were able to save some of the guards she had before that got turned to ice, along with the fact that the sun finally came out for the first time ever an melted the snow. However. The fact that the body was missing when Luk came to take care of it. It does make me wonder how she will take her revenge. Seeing as clearly she's still alive. Ismena that is. An the whole thing with Luk not trusting the dwarfs or Cedric. It's understandable an it is also understandable that the people of the kingdom will need time to come to trust them. But it also makes you wonder if one of them will somehow betray her in the next one. Hummm. I hope not though seeing as they are all so good together!

But now that they've won for now it does bring to light a whole lot of questions for the next one. I suppose I'll have to wait an see.

But. I know why your reading this. It's to see if you want to read it. Well I'm here to tell you: You do want to read it!

It is beyond anything I've ever read. So yes. You want to read it. It's SOOOOOOOO WORTH IT!

I would like to Thank Nicki again for sending me this and for writing it. It was wonderfully written and I can't imagine anyone doing a better job then this.

With love,

Cassie

Perfection.

Is there a better word for this book? I don't think so! Every piece of this story was incredible.
Thanks Nicki for giving me a review copy of this book!!

The Details:
~Language: minor use of the word 'dolt'
~Romance: boy/girl attraction, two kisses, nothing bad
~Violence: a good deal of fighting, details about a character being killed with a sword
~Blood/Gore: many injuries, a character is killed

What I Liked...
The Storyline. Seriously, I don't know if this could've gotten any better! I loved the careful detail and how similar Winter Cursed was to Snow White! Perfect, perfect, perfect.

The Characters. Well done!!! Elisabeth was amazing, and of course, the ever argumentative Cedric. It was so entertaining and hilarious to see them argue! All of the dwarves were fun too. I enjoyed reading about Lizzy and Cedric's pasts.

The Cleanness. So many books nowadays have so much language, bad romance, and all kinds of stuff thrown in that really ruins a book for me. I really appreciate the fact that Nicki made Winter Cursed very clean and suitable for ages 12+. So cool!

To be honest, I can't really find any flaws. Cedric got on my nerves a lot with how much he argued with Lizzy, but I loved him all the same. I did find a few grammar mistakes in this one, but it definitely did NOT ruin the book for me!!

Great job, Nicki. Can't wait to read the next one...

Winter Cursed is such a heartwarming adventure. It’s short and to the point, but it has the thrill and plot of an epic fairytale type story. It loosely follows the story of Snow White, but then there’s twists and turns along the way that throws the reader off track. The characters are endearing in their own way and the fantasy creatures add exciting action and a little humor to the plot. I can’t wait to read more from this blooming authoress!

FIRST OF I AM SO ASHAMED OF MYSELF FOR NOT READING AND REVIEWING THIS EARLIER like I was supposed to. first, i was really busy at the time and promptly forgot, but then second, it really took me a long time to finish this.

great things:

i. cedric is literally the best part of this book! the sass! the snark! the sarcasm! he's so awesome and the best part was when the dwarves were like

ii. the dwarves! they were so well done! all gruff and cute at the same time <3 i loved them so much!

iii. it had a nice winter setting - a Snow White x Frozen vibe (someone else said this already, i believe). and i really liked the history, the kingdom names, the fantasy world! so much potential there!

iv. the writing was good! and it didn't have too many errors either.

the stuff that docked stars:

v. so *ahem* i hate to say this because it feels like i'm the only one of ever, but it was really slow moving?? in my opinion?? there was this really long time when elizabeth was with the dwarves and cedric, and i get that it was important for the relationship/character building but ... like nothing much happened?? except elizabeth arguing with cedric. every time i took a break from reading i had no motivation to pick it up again. i'm so sorry!!

vi. elizabeth annoyed me a few times. mostly she was ok!! but!! she was a little bit ... dense on occasion.

example a)

and example b)

ALL THE SAME!! i really want to find out what happens next so i'll probably read the following books eventually!

3/5 stars. don't let me discourage you from reading this, because i know so many people have absolutely LOVED it!!

Snow White meets Frozen in this fun, dark fairy tale retelling that I thoroughly enjoyed!!

I had the privilege of beta-reading an earlier version of this story, and I remember finding it pretty darn EPIC. Reading it now, as a published novella, that viewpoint certainly hasn't changed. ;) The magic system is breathtaking, and the creepy winter vibe throughout adds a nice touch. Its pacing is excellent - the first part of the book, though slower, builds the character relationships and conflict REALLY well, especially considering how short the book is.

Cedric is by far my favorite character; his snark is PERFECTION!!!! (Honestly, he's one of my top fictional crushes. XD) Whereas his sense of humor is on the darker and more mysterious side, the adorable dwarves provide a lighter, bouncier comic relief. So there's this skillful balance of sorts going on that I love. <3

As for Elisabeth, she wasn't my favorite. She's not very exceptional and acted kinda naive at times? I do like her, though.

Overall, Winter Cursed is a SOLID novella. (Cedric foreverrrrr) I can't wait for the sequel! :D

I wasn't aware that this was another of the short stories originally intended for Five Poisoned Apples, the Snow White anthology by Rooglewood, that didn't get selected and ended up published separately.

Unfortunately, it's a poorly-structured story, with little set up, and that requires a lot of assumptions for the plot/world to make sense, as well as having sketchy characterisation and an underdeveloped romance that happens practically overnight, plus a rushed and cliffhangery ending. The dwarfs are the single attractive element, but aren't enough to compensate for how half-baked the final story was.

I am not sure why the author thought the plot could work as a short story, because it evidently requires a full novel to wrap it all up neatly and does not work well as a series of novellas.

First of all, I would like to thank the amazing author, Nicki Chapelway, for giving me a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review, and here it is!!

This book was amazing, I must say that I really hate the 'Snow White' fairy tale, but I really love all the retellings of the story that I have read, and this one was amazing as well.

I love Elisabeth and Cedric, they are my two favorite characters. At first I really hated Cedric, but he got better as the book progressed.

SSSSSSSOOOOO YA'LL, EVERYONE GO AND READ THIS BOOK AND I HOPE YOU ENJOY IT AS MUCH AS I DID!!!

Re-Read 6/22/21

First Read 12/23/18

Gah! I loved this book so much! I'm gonna to give it five shiny stars! Snow White was already a good tale, but this book is one of the BEST RETELLINGS I HAVE EVER READ!!!!

The Characters:

Cedric is fabulous! I love the banter and his darkness! And it was interesting to have him the prince of shadows! In the original retelling the Prince didn't have any role with the plot and the love is too instant and stuff. This book is not the case. Cedric has a great role. Somebody help me though! I kept thinking that because Cedric is the dark prince that he has dark hair, then the book keeps reminding me that he actually has pale blond hair.... Lol

Elizabeth was okay. I thought she was a goody-two-shoes at first, but then she started to grow on me. And she works well with Cedric. I love how concern she was for her people and how she was willing to hold a sword to free her people from Ismena. Just, YES!!!

I really loved the seven dwarfs. They had really good character development, which kinda reminded me of dwarfs in The Hobbit (which, by the way, I loved!). I sometimes had a hard time keeping track of who was who, but they were so great and funny and just made the book, along with Cedric, of course.

Ismena was a wonderful villain. Believe it or not she was one of my favorite characters. She was so sincere and it just made sense why she didn't like Elizabeth. And that prologue, wow, that was scary, interesting, and heartbreaking all at the same time. =0 I LOVED IT!!! She seemed to care and then she didn't, but she did, I love villains like this!

The World Building:

The world building was also great. I love the eternal winter and the magic and the characters, it was so good!

The dark enchanted forest was a interesting place, scary, and dangerous; filled with Garmrs and other horrifying things (like Giant Spiders *shivers*). I just loved it!

Content in Book:

1. Cedric is the Prince of shadows.

2. Violence. (Hand-to-hand combat. With monsters. Using magic. With swords. Etc.)

3. Magic.

4. Killing people with poison.

5. Turning people into creatures and controlling them.

6. Turning people to ice.

7. Mentions of a war.

Will I Read the Next Book in the Series???

YES!!!! I NEED THE NEXT BOOK NOW!!!! THIS BOOK WAS SO GOOD!!!!

Who I Would Recommend It To:

Those who like "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" retellings. Those who like excellent books with great world building and characters. Those who like books that have wonderful villains. Those who like winter, because it might just be eternal.

Thank you so much to the author for sending me a copy of this to read and review!

I'm not entirely sure how to rate this, so for now I'll say somewhere around 3.5 stars.

This is a very short and really fun retelling of snow white, and I adore retellings! This one was inventive and I thoroughly enjoyed reading it. Elizabeth may have been a bit annoying at times, but I can see why she had the mindset she did, and she did come around eventually. I loved Cedric and the dwarves, they were awesome - there were so many funny bits that made me laugh out loud - and the villain, Ismena, was wonderful.

There were grammatical errors and some repetition, but it wasn't really much of a bother. I do think that this book could have been longer with more, kind of, filling bits here and there; what I mean is, I think the story would benefit from giving the characters more time/pages to grow and develop. Let the plot build a little slower, just so we get a chance to really get to know the characters, their struggles, the back story, and the world. So some editing would make this book even better.

But as a short read written for a competition (I think that's right) I have to say that I actually really enjoyed it, hence my rating; even though there are places where this could have been improved, I still did really like it!

I read this story awhile back when I Beta read it. I was pleasantly surprised by the realistic (and hilarious) characters, and I was swept away immediately to the frozen, yet beautiful, world Nicki Chapelway has created.

A tad cliche at times, the story is still one any fantasy fan will enjoy.

An imaginative story about a princess's inner journey as well as the challenging alliances she forms. Princess Elisabeth of Havenkeep, still a teenager, is endearingly brave and speaks up for herself. She's a militarized Snow White with dwarf defenders amidst a Frozen aesthetic plus some spirit adversaries that could evoke Game of Thrones.

The wicked stepmother, a sorceress, felt wronged by a man and so she's had it out for poor Elisabeth ever since her birth. It didn't really make sense to me that the sorceress "had been trying to kill her since she was a young child." An ordinary, muggle grownup is capable of killing a baby if they really want to. The stepmother must have had some internal conflict, either magical (forces that blocked her from committing murder) or mundane (feeling ambivalent and not trying very hard). In any case, the reader has to accept this premise because the story begins when Elisabeth leaves home to save herself. The story is really about Elisabeth, not her stepmother. The dwarfs are amusing, friendly personalities but they do not overshadow Elisabeth either.

Some good high-fantasy mileage was gotten out of the classic Snow White tale in this retelling that is more literal than metaphorical. The cliffhanger leads into the next book in the series: A Winter Dark and Deadly.

I was given a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

This is a wonderful, clean retelling of the classic tale of Snow White. Almost all if the elements of the original Grimm fairy-tale are present, but given a fresh twist that I believe is more realistic. I especially admired how Nicki presented the hate-to-love romantic arc between Cedric and "Lizzie".

The strength of this book is very much the characters. Each of the dwarves had their own personality, Elisabeth was a woman full of softness (though she does her darndest to grow a backbone) and Cedric is a ball of infuriating, arrogant anti-hero tricksterness that tops even Loki himself. I also really really liked that Ismena was allowed to have some moments of humanity and affection.

There were a few minor things that I found distracting, at least at first. One were the shadow people. Frankly, if I saw a film adaptation of this book with them, I would be a bit spooked. Second was the sluggishness in the first third of the book when Elisabeth and Cedric are in the castle constantly arguing with each other. I personally feel that there should have been a mini-scene, maybe with the dwarves, in between some of them (I'm thinking specifically between the chess scene and the scene before.)
And there were at least one typo. Nothing major though.

RW Ratings:

Language: 4 1/2 stars. There were a few instances of implied swearing, and two direct instances - however, these are world-specific ones ("what the frost" and "Gamrs' teeth")

Abuse: 4 1/2 stars. Quite a lot of manipulation, especially by the villain. But if course, that is to be expected.

Lust: 5 stars. Two instances of "true love's kiss" and that was all.

I’ve been hearing a lot about this book from my blogging friends, so when I finally got a chance to read it, I was so happy! And it did not disappoint.

*I received a copy from the author in exchange for an honest review*

LIKES:

Cedric. THE SASS IS REAL, GUYS. I loved his character development throughout.

The characters in general were just plain fantastic, especially the villain. Ismena was so fantastically creepy - and she reminded me of one of my good friends. XD Whoops. (I promise, the friend is really nice!)

The world-building. I thought that, since there was a magically prolonged winter, it would have a Narnia feel. But NOPE. This world was dark and creepy and I loved every second of it.

And the ending. THE ENDING. NICKI, WHAT IS THIS. WHAT HAVE YOU DONE. NOOOOO. (so obviously I loved it. XD)

DISLIKES:

I didn’t really get into the first chapter - it seemed like most of it consisted of info-dumping. I get that it’s a short book, and the information has to be conveyed somehow, but at some points there was so much I had to learn that it really took me out of the events of the book. But as soon as I got to chapter 3, I was hooked!

Also, a couple grammatical mistakes, but they weren’t too bad.

Overall, this was a pretty good book, and I can’t wait to read the prequel (and the sequel, but I don’t think it’s out yet.... :( )!

I had the pleasure of beta reading a shorter version of this story back in 2017. I enjoyed it then and was excited to see it in its final form when it was published. It did not disappoint.

The twist the author puts on the Snow White story are fresh and fun without loosing its resemblance to the original tale as some retellings can. Add to that some sassy characters (I'm looking at you, Cedric) and how could you go wrong? An enjoyable read from beginning to end.

THAT EPILOGUE THO. I was not expecting a cliffhanger, especially a cliffhanger like THAT, and now I'm hanging here and I just...my brain...it can't...I can't. *flails helplessly* Guess I'm just gonna have to read the next book, aren't I? ;)

Amazing book! This is a sweet, dark fantasy novella with Nordic and Celtic mythical elements sprinkled in, as well as unique ties to the original fairytale. The magic mirror, the wicked queen, the huntsman, the charming prince, the seven dwarfs, the poisoned apple– it’s all in there. Just modified, to make it a bit more fun.
The characters are each wonderful and likable in their own ways. Elisabeth was pretty naïve, which was kind of annoying, but she is Snow White, so it makes enough sense. Ismena was the perfect Wicked Queen, as evil as the original jealous stepmother… only this time, her plight could be understood, and they were even sympathetic to a believable point. Then, of course, there are the seven dwarfs– probably like my favorite aspect of the original story! And Nicki’s dwarfs were hilariously awesome. Seriously, it’s impossible to choose a favorite out of that lot.
BUT THEN, THERE’S CEDRIC. I honestly first thought he’d be the stereotypical dark, brooding, caustic sort of guy, but after reading his first line in the book he was officially confirmed amazing. And can I just say, how much it irked me that Elisabeth didn’t like him until… well… until, you know, that happened? (Know what that was?)
Anyway, this book was very good! I can’t wait to see what else the author has in store for this story.

/ read this in about two hours.

OKAY THIS WAS AWESOME. i'm not a huge fan of fantasy (sorry, it's just not my preferred genre), and for some reason, fairy tale retellings have never really been my favorite either (except for the Lunar Chronicles <3). but "Winter Cursed" took the original story of Snow White and spun it in a very interesting way, and i thoroughly enjoyed it.

i need the sequel now please. thank you.

only negative thing is that i felt the story moved a little too fast. it's a novella (i think), so i get why it's short, but still i felt like the action at the end was rushed. it went from Elisabeth leaving to meeting the dwarves (who were awesome btw) to meeting Cedric to .

anyway, thoroughly enjoyed "Winter Cursed" and highly recommend it.

I loved this take on Snow White. The dwarves were hilarious, I didn't expect them to make me laugh as much as they did. Their banter was incredibly entertaining. I liked that this retelling retained a lot of the traditional elements of the story, while still having some great twists. Cerdric completely won me over. I loved his mischievous attitude and constant snark. His interactions with Elisabeth were by far my favorite part. Gotta love a Prince of Shadows.
I enjoyed this one a lot!

A beautiful retelling of the Snow White and Seven Dwarves. I love dwarves bickering and Cedric’s sarcasm. I love how the world building fits nicely with the story without overpower the plot itself. Just a great read, recommended to all.

Well! What a way to end a book!

PROS:
-We jump into the story at the point where Elisabeth (Snow White) runs away from her stepmother. There's no need to wait for things to pick up because things are constantly on the move from the first chapter.
-The added lore to the original tale.
-The dwaves-The accents, the differences of personality, their humor. Gah, I liked them a lot.
-Cedric-He was smug, cynical, somewhat irritating, and annoyingly sharp. Yeah, I loved him.
-Ismena-(I'm pretty sure that's how her name was spelled) She was very intriguing. I can't wait to read the prequel and get to know her a little more.
-The fact pointed out by a dwarf that love is a choice. First time I've seen that in a fairytale retelling and it makes even more sense given Elisabeth and Cedric barely know each other.
-THAT ENDING

CONS:
-Elisabeth-I'm really really sorry, but she irritated me. She never seemed to stop and think about what she could handle or what she should do. The plans she came up with weren't thought through and she made plans that she could never carry out. She didn't work on her magic or swordplay. She insisted on being treated as an equal but didn't contribute anything that would give her that status. She never once considered that she was wrong in her opinions and automatically assumed that she was right about everything. Hopefully, she'll grow and work on improving herself in future books.

Overall, this was a great retelling and I look forward to reading more books by this author.

Yay! I've been wanting to read this for a while and I finally got to!!

So, this is my first Nicki Chapelway book and I really liked it. The whole setting was described as a " dark retelling " but I really didn't see it very much... Maybe cause of her bright and fun writing style?

Anyway, some of the things I liked:
CEDRIC!!! You adorable little dark lord you <3 I really liked Cedric, he was just so fun!
EliSabeth. I don't know why but I really prefer the name Elizabeth with an S. So I'm very happy an S was used.
I also really liked the reference to the original tale by putting in the corset and poisoned comb, that was really cool.
And last, THE SHADOW COURT!!!! Ah, the manipulation of shadows is such an amazing idea and I really liked that :)

This was really enjoyable and I only wish it could've been loooooooonnnnngggggeeeerrrr! Cause I really really wanted to keep reading and get to know more about the characters. Oh well, it was still great.

Thank you to the author for providing me with a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

"All must fall till I'm the fairest of them all."

Princess Elisabeth of Havenkeep is in grave danger. Her stepmother, Ismena, wants to kill her to ensure she won't ever have to give up the throne for her. To keep herself - and her kingdom's hope of salvation - safe, Elisabeth flees to the only place Ismena won't know to follow - the dark forest near the winter castle.

But the forest is crawling with dangerous creatures and even there she isn't safe. Elisabeth's sense of duty is strong. She must find allies and reclaim her throne. But the only ones willing to help her are seven mercenaries that had been banished to the forest over a decade ago, and a prince without a kingdom, presiding over a shadow court in a crumbling castle.

Can Elisabeth trust them? And can she believe in herself and do what must be done?

"Do we have an accord, princess? Your kingdom in exchange for mine? Your freedom for my freedom?"

Winter Cursed is a short but entertaining retelling of Snow White. I enjoyed the different take on the tale; the mercenary dwarfs and the prince that was rather darker than the original and the princess that actually took matters into her own hands instead of just hiding (even if she still needed others to occasionally rescue or help her). I think the villain, Ismena, was well-written too. There was a complexity to her that I appreciated.

I believe this book might have been better had it been longer, allowing for the character development to feel more natural and believable. The relationship between the Elisabeth and Cedric could benefit from that as well. I would like there to have been at least two scenes where they wouldn't have been arguing before the talk of true love came into the picture.

The author sent me a pdf in exchange for an honest review.

I really liked this book! I love fairytale retellings and this one was great. Cedric and Elisabeth were my fav characters. It took me some time to finish it because English is not my native language and this was an e-book. Also, that cliffhanger!!!
