Picking up right were Volume 3 left off Battle Pope is in big trouble when God finds out about the time he spent with Mary over Christmas. Fire and brimstone fly as the stage is set for the battle of the millennium, Battle Pope vs. God Now presented in full color
Robert Kirkman is an American comic book writer best known for his work on The Walking Dead, Invincible for Image Comics, as well as Ultimate X-Men and Marvel Zombies for Marvel Comics. He has also collaborated with Image Comics co-founder Todd McFarlane on the series Haunt. He is one of the five partners of Image Comics, and the only one of the five who was not one of the original co-founders of that publisher.
Robert Kirkman's first comic books were self-published under his own Funk-o-Tron label. Along with childhood friend Tony Moore, Kirkman created Battle Pope which was published in late 2001. Battle Pope ran for over 2 years along with other Funk-o-Tron published books such as InkPunks and Double Take.
In July of 2002, Robert's first work for another company began, with a 4-part SuperPatriot series for Image, along with Battle Pope backup story artist Cory Walker. Robert's creator-owned projects followed shortly thereafter, including Tech Jacket, Invincible and Walking Dead.
Ok, at least the last arc made me mildly glad I continued on with the series. The character of Mary really helped the series and brought it to a decent conclusion. I still don't think I'd recommend the series as a whole but it was interesting to see Kirkman and Moore cutting their teeth. I actually did enjoy the art in the series. It was a cartoony style very befitting of the topic. The story just seemed like it lacked purpose most of the time though.
I hope for the writer's sake that he doesn't think that sex works like in the comic. Pope: 'You want to go at it?' Random blonde bimbo: 'Okay.' Just like real life, right? Note: I have nothing against blondes. Especially hot blondes. Damn, I did it too, huh? The sex jokes must be getting to me.
God is angry at Pope after he finds about Mary cheating on him. Sorry, 'He' and 'Him.'
Best moment in the book is below, but it's a spoiler if you care for such things.
Misoginy: 1 Just plain bad jokes, so not about sex: 3 Adolescent-level sex jokes: 11, especially the very last one Violence, though it's really PG-13: 3 Surprisingly good jokes: 2 Bombastic poses (but they're parody, so they're ok): 7 Feminist crap from someone who just cheated: 1 God is a pussy: 1, but quite enough from the almighty
There you go, the sex jokes win. So only read if you're into cringe-worthy sex jokes.
The end. It took me a couple months to get my hands on volume 4 of Battle Pope, and I had such high hopes. I don't think this volume (seemed a little shorter than the first three) stacked up nearly as well as volumes one through three. Artwork is still great, but it just wasn't quite as funny.
Would I kill for a continuation of this series, though. Bring back Battle Pope!
