Jack Gilmour: Wish Lawyer by Ed Ryder

“Jack Gilmour Wish Lawyer,” is suitably set in Las Vegas where people get caught up in the glitz and glamour of a freewheeling lifestyle. He is surrounded by beautiful people who may not be as they outwardly seem. Eddie Malfitano, who owns a couple of casinos a few blocks off downtown, is visibly upset when he drags his nephew, Benny, into Jack’s office. Benny has just finished college and is visiting his uncle Eddie for the summer to get a taste of the business. Benny has been struck with a major case of lust at one of the downtown casinos, when all of a sudden there is a man that says he can fix Benny up with this sultry beauty and all he has to do is sign on the dotted line. So, Benny does.

At first Jack assumes Benny signed a karmic contract which is a simple matter. In reality Benny signed a soul contract, which is a whole different story. Did you know that demons have Demonic Precepts to live by? Well they do, and Jack is an expert in demonic law. As it says in the description, this case sends Jack on a collision course with Lucia Oredis, a dangerous and seductive demon from Jack’s past. Lucia will cancel Benny’s contract if Jack investigates a conspiracy in the halls of demonic powers in the underworld.

There are layers upon layers as the plot twists and turns, in the streets of Las Vegas as well as in the underworld. The characters are multi-dimensional, some are twisted and pure evil, others not-so-much. The dialogue is intelligent, conscientious, and at times humorous. The descriptive prose at the beginning is beautiful and sets you right there with Jack. The noir twists are totally enjoyable, especially when we meet Gloria, Jack’s secretary. She is a gloriously strong woman who got satisfaction in the end, and I would like to see more of her.

If you need a break from the routine urban fantasy, take a walk on the wild side of Las Vegas with “Jack Gilmour: Wish Lawyer” for a unique and witty roller-coaster ride.

This is a noir private investigator novel except instead of a trained P.I. we have a lawyer fallen into strange company after he made an ill-thought-out deal with a demon. Jack Gilmour has a good heart and a strong hatred for demon trickery, two elements he turns into reviewing demonic contracts before a human does something stupid…like he did.

Both the tone and the traditional elements spring from the noir detective genre, and as the story unfolds, this pen-pushing lawyer is thrust into events better suited for a P.I. He has good friends to call upon, though, and with some harrowing moments, manages to navigate the line as a mediator between demons and humanity quite well. The tone lost me a little when it appeared to become quite misogynous, but I say appeared because there was more going on than Jack knew, and as the true answers unfold, that appearance is negated quite nicely.

One of Jack’s friends is Sebastian, a wizard who supports himself by manipulating casino games. The conversation between Sebastian and Eddie (Jack’s client) is a thing of beauty. How the demon Lucia’s demonic nature comes clear through offhand cruelty rather than heavy description is also well done. The description does get a bit too dense for me at times, but there were many turns of phrase that I appreciated.

The strong narrative voice helped in drawing me into the story, and there were a few twists and turns I didn’t anticipate. Others, I saw long before Jack, and the best reason I can give is he wasn’t thinking like a P.I. so overlooked the early clues. There are a couple of points like that, but the strengths helped overcome these weaknesses.

Ultimately, the book lives up to its description. It offers a fun noir adventure with the traditional emotionally distant main character who nevertheless has a heart of gold and risks everything to protect his people. Toss in some demonic magic, and you have the makings of a series with potential.

P.S. I received this ARC through NetGalley in return for an honest review.

It’s Las Vegas but not as you know it. Welcome to the world of Jack Gilmour: Wish Lawyer. Demons are looking to exploit human weaknesses, so they offer contracts for the unwary – a few earthly pleasures in return for five years or more on “the Plane”. It’s Jack’s job to prevent his clients from making a deal that they’ll regret, which is where crime boss Eddie Malfitano comes in. His nephew has signed such a contract, and in an effort to find a way out, Jack stumbles on a demonic conspiracy.

Jack is a likeable protagonist, carrying that world-weary cynical view and delivering wisecracks along the way. There’s a good sense of humour running through the narrative: at one point, Eddie distracts himself by reading a Demonic law tome, yet Jack can’t bring himself to explain to the crime boss that the book is upside down!

This is essentially a noir thriller, complete with femme fatales and murky crime figures aplenty, but with the supernatural elements nicely weaved into the story, it feels refreshing and original. As the plot progresses, we find out about soul contracts, the Ruling Council of demons and The Plane.

The author has done an excellent job of keeping the prose tight: the dialogue is snappy and convincing throughout, whilst the descriptions are spot-on without being over-wordy, giving a good sense of time and place. The Hall of records is beautifully described – a shrine to gothic architecture conjuring up images of some vast cathedral but with less than saintly inhabitants.

This is a fun and quick read that entertains over the course of a story that is well thought out and will leave you wanting more. I’m already looking forward to the next instalment.

There are many who would say that lawyers are from hell, but this one might just be your only chance of getting out of a demonic contract alive.  Jack Gilmour is Las Vegas’s first and only demonic contract lawyer. In a city all too eager to sin where you can get anything if you are willing to sign on the dotted line - he’s the last line of defense.  The novel starts with this unique premise, introducing a very different kind of hero in a world where demons readily interact with humans. Jack Gilmour is middle aged and balding, but he knows his demonic law.  He also has friends, including a suave gambling wizard with major mojo. Don’t expect dry courtroom scenes. There’s plenty of action and more than a touch of dark humor.

When Eddie Malfitano’s naive nephew signs a contract guaranteeing the interest of the fiancé of one of Las Vegas’s biggest players, Jack is tasked with finding a way to break the contract.  If it is consummated, there will be bloodshed on the streets and that doesn’t include what will happen to his nephew. The contract leads back to Lucia Oredis, a powerful demon and major player who agrees to break the contract in exchange for Jack finding out about a demonic conspiracy and ending it.

Part pulp mystery, part urban fantasy action Jack Gilmour Wish Lawyer is 100% fun.  The unusual characters and the unique premise combined with Ed Ryder’s snappy dialogue make for a winning novel.  I hope to see more of Ed Ryder and Jack Gilmour in future.

This was a fun read, with a great set up that begs for more books... The idea of a lawyer who specializes in soul-selling contracts is hardly a stretch (I can make that joke, as a lawyer myself!), but surprisingly enough, it hasn't been played out yet (that I've seen) and I found it a great construct that offered thoroughly entertaining possibilities. Jack's noir personality is a great foil for the more modern messes he finds himself cleaning up, and sets up a nice contrast between old- and new-school.

The story moved along at a mostly solid pace - there were a few times that the book lagged a bit and felt like it needed a tighter edit. It felt a little rough around the edges, and while that worked alright for the format and story, I think that with a little tweaking this could really be an exceptional series. Some of the demonic interactions felt a little rushed - I am still not entirely sure I understand how that world works, although that may be the plan if this is a first-in-series. There were a few places where the transition between plot elements felt rushed, but I appreciated the author's desire to keep it short, sweet, and to the point as much as possible - it kept the flow going and kept me engaged, even if occasionally flipping back a page to make sure I hadn't missed a connection.

It all worked itself out into a satisfactory ending, and I never felt truly lost, but there were a few spots where a little more explanation about the connections between people/demons would have helped tighten the story. Still, even saying all of that, it was a very enjoyable book - the writing was easy to engage with and the plot fun to follow through, and I will definitely keep an eye out for more adventures with Jack!

This is a fun pulp noir, lawyer tale. My rating 4.5.

Jack Gilmour is a Las Vegas attorney specializing in demon contract law. His job is to protect people from entering into contracts with the devil, or, if they have already made a deal he may be able to help get the contract voided. Jack works with some unusual characters to accomplish his goals. One is Sebastian, a wizard who is able to work magic against demonic powers. The other is a powerful, seductress Lucia, a demon of the Inner Circle.

Jack is called upon by a local casino owner to get his nephew out of a poorly chosen deal. The young man might get a night of his dreams but it would most likely be followed by his death. Jack enlists the help of Sebastian and Lucia. Lucia agrees to help but only if Jack agrees to investigate a demonic conspiracy that threatens Lucia’s control as well as human safety. Jack has to infiltrate a demon stronghold to uncover answers. He has to follow one clue to another to unravel the contract and he is racing against time.

I enjoyed the mystery and the noir elements of this story. Jack and Sebastian are likeable characters and even Lucia has a bit of a draw – well she is a temptress demon after all. This is a quick, entertaining read and it supports an adage I often tell my clients: An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure! I recommend this fun, easy read to those who enjoy noir mystery.

The premise of this book - a lawyer who deals with demonic contracts - was just too fantastic for me to pass up.

Does it deliver? Mostly, yes. It's an entertaining story, and down-on-his-luck Las Vegas lawyer Jack is an oddly endearing character. He's an unapologetic throwback to the days of whiskey-sipping PIs in fedoras, but, unlike them, his defence is the law rather than his fists. He doesn't carry a gun, and is wonderfully unequipped to deal with physical confrontations. He's no square-jawed hero, and I like him more for it.

The story kicks off with a member of the mob dragging his nephew into Jack's office. The young man's got himself into a contract that, if fulfilled, will likely kick off all-out war in the city. Of course, all is not as it seems, and before long Jack is caught between the mob and demons, under threat from all sides.

The story's quite a romp, and I only had a few reservations. Jack was the only fully-developed character, the others feeling somewhat one-dimensional, and women were mostly of the in distress variety (unless you count the demon Lucia). That aside, I enjoyed it enough that I'll be picking up the next book when it comes out. There felt to be a lot more going on behind the scenes that I want to know about

Ryder’s captivating, entertaining style kept on like a steam boat; no boring spots. Ryder certainly knows how to pace a story and juggle a handful of plot threads at once. The best part for me however was the dialogue. The characters really came alive in those passages. Curiously, on the other hand, the characters seemed somewhat stylised, exaggerated; but despite that, they came off the page very life-like. All these flawed people trying to build a life or scrape out a living in a less than perfect world, a little scruffy, a little stubbornly stuck with their ways…Very noir! I especially loved how the older, stronger women were portrayed, Lucia in particular. If this were a play, I could imagine the characters as pro actors who’d pull a perfect performance on stage, then throw kisses at the audience with a disguised smile: ‘was that too much’?
While this was a fun book, underneath the seemingly happy-go-lucky, ‘live and let live’ attitudes, there seemed to be a recurring theme of how to stay human in a harsh world. It certainly wasn’t all pretty or nice, but entertaining, it sure was. To finish, I can definitely recommend this to anyone looking for a well-written, nicely put-together noir detective story—with demons!

After enjoying In Vitro Lottery by the same author, I'd kept an eye out for further works. It's described as a novella but was certainly at the longer length and good value for the 99p price point.

The premise was immediately interesting, if demons walked amongst us, offering us the opportunity to sell our soul (or at least lend it) to make our dreams come true. This is where our protagonist comes in, a back alley street lawyer who tries to get his clients out of their mess.

The book is well written in the first person style, I'm occasionally not a fan but it certainly works in this case, very much expected in the genre, your back alley lawyer and sorting out the mess of his clients. The premise was certainly interesting and well explained, a bit of legal jargon adds some realism without going overboard and gives a real insight into the legal premise of the "sell your soul" contracts.

It reminded me a lot of the Roger Rabbit books, which if you haven't read them is praise indeed, I look forward to further entries in the series, the world created here is certainly wasted if it ends at this, and the author implies further entries are in the works, I look forward to them.

Wish lawyer WHat does a wish lawyer do? He brokers wish contracts, looks over them to check if they are real, can they be broken, or meant for the wrong person. Demons are involved and they can't lie, Benny, Eddie's nephew met a beautiful woman that he really wants and he signed a paper that he didn't read so he can have her. Her fiancee is Patrick Halikov, who is worse than all the Mafia put together. Jack and Sebastian, a wizard go to see Lucia, a powerful demon of The Inner Circle to see if she will help. She agrees but she wants something. Lucia needs to stop a conspiracy that could bring down the Inner Circle. Also, his secretary has disappeared with someone she shouldn't be with. Will that be more than they can do do, will Jack get paid and what about Benny? Will they find Gloria, the secretary safe? Well written, suspenseful, I liked it. I received this book from Net Galley for an honest review and no compensation.

Thank you to Net Galley & BooksGoSocial for providing me with this arc in exchange for my honest review.

Although I found parts of this book interesting it was just okay for me. It's a new take on making a deal with a demon and one I really thought I'd be into but I had a really tough time getting into this one. In fact I had to force myself to finish it because as interesting as I found the idea I just couldn't get into the characters. It's a well paced story however I think I could have used some faster parts maybe that would have kept me engaged...

Overall I think it was the lack of character growth or lack of character connection that kept me at a distance. I would recommend this book to someone who is into similar books or was looking for something new and interesting as I do find the idea of lawyers working to get humans out of demon contracts interesting. I don't know that this was the one for me.

Loads of action, suspense, the supernatural, a bit of funny mixed with plenty of danger, an original storyline, and fantastic characters. Combine all of these and you have the wonderfully written Urban Fantasy that is Jack Gilmour: Wish Lawyer. This one had me hooked from the first page and didn't let go even when the last page was turned. The only thing wrong with this story is that I didn't want it to end. It's just that good.

We all know that we should never sign a contract without reading the fine print, and Jack has the job of making sure all is fair in contracts - With demons. That's where our story starts. Jack agrees to help break a contract and from there it's a downward spiral into danger. With plenty of twists and lots of action, the story moves at a fast pace, making it impossible to put down.

I received a free electronic ARC of this book from Netgalley in return for an honest review.

This was an okay book. It had a new angle on the whole contract with a demon theme. Jack Gilmour is a lawyer specializing in these Demonic contracts. Before you sign one, go to him. Or, if you skipped that step, go after and pray he can find a loophole to get you out of it. The book had a decent plot. Not too fast, not too slow. There wasn't a lot of character growth in the story. The aim was more action adventure than soul searching novel. All in all it was a fair bit of writing and I would read a sequel if one comes out.

Startling!

What a great read, from start to finish! Not at all what I was expecting, but it had me totally absorbed and entranced. Having read the author's first book, which was again very imaginative, I can see huge improvement in the quality of writing in this. For me, this was so well written and so intriguing, I could see it playing out in my head, like a Hollywood blockbuster! Highly recommended!

4.5 Stars A broker of wishes may give you what you want but be careful what you wish for because you may just need to be protected from them. My first read by this author but what and introduction, I loved this story, the characters and the overall interaction and look forward to reading more by this author.

Cool Noir for the 21 Century

I couldn't help but see a Micky Spillane type narrating this whole story. Very unique voice and a fun, quick read!

It might be because I've watched too much television (specifically Lucifer, Supernatural, Angel etc) that this book is right up my street. A well written, nicely visualised world. I can't wait for the next book!
