"Deceit" is the six crime thriller from writer Kerry Barnes that is perfect for fans of Jacqui Rose, Kimberley Chambers, and Martina Cole. Many of her books feature stories that have their basis in gangs and the "laws" of gangland warfare and the lifestyle that comes as a result. Her background is in science, namely medicine but she has more reccently discovered that she has a deep love for both reading and writing. She highlights that her stories feature some of her life experiences although she likes to leave the matter of which of those storylines have elements based in reality to us, her readers!
Usually, when I read books that are heavily gang-based, they tend to be written be men so I am pleasantly surprised to find a title in a similar vein written by a woman and - most importantly - it is just as downright thrilling as anything a man can write! The story had me engaged and interested within a few pages of picking it up and the author's writing stype definitely helped in that. It's very easy-to-follow and flowed well. I'll tell you how gripped I was - I missed the television programmes I usually watch religiously because I simply couldn't stop thinking about what would happen. Constantly exploring the possible options in my mind to the point where I may have been watching the T.V. but in name only. So, I went right back to reading and knew there wouldn't be much point trying to sleep before finishing it as my mind would be racing, as before.
I really appreciated how Barnes made the gang world seem more feminine than it actually is. She main topics she explores is that of revenge as well as the often associated causes and effects - lies, secrets, manipulation - DECEIT! Deeper issues with a tie to gangs are also looked at such as class and racial prejudice, which can be both causes of becoming involved in a less than moral lifestyle or effects too.
One last word, if you're not a fan of books steeped in vulgar language then maybe give this one a miss. That being said, I don't feel the author overused it or used it gratuitously and I can see why she decided to use it in the places she did. It fits the story too. Hard-hitting, intelligently written, with characters who are both deeply flawed and realistic and a thoroughly enjoyable conclusion. I truly loved this story.
Many thanks to HQ Digital for an ARC. I was not required to post a review and all thoughts and opinions expressed are my own.
Kerry Barnes writes one hell of a story and Deceit was no different. It seems with each book she just gets better and better as an author. When I read that part of this book would be set in a women’s prison I was reminded of one of Kerry’s earlier books however the story here couldn’t have been more different.
There’s not a lot I want to say about the plot for fear of giving too much away but I was blown away at where the story went here and how many amazing twists and turns Kerry included, some I worked out and others I just did not see coming. I loved the setting within the prison and how we had Kara, or Posh as she became known, entering this world that she knew nothing about. Wentworth has been one of the best dramas of the past few years and so any book set within a women’s prison is always one that I want to read. On the outside we have Kara’s boyfriend Justin who is caught up with a woman he got pregnant, a woman who has secrets of her own and is one of the most twisted characters I’ve read about in a book for a while.
I felt the book was stagnating a little in the middle and I found myself feeling like I’d been reading it for ages but then around the 70% everything kicks off and I had my Kindle firmly in my hands until the final page as I couldn’t read quick enough. Talk about a dramatic, unforgettable and twist-filled ending. Deceit is a fantastic read and proves once again what a real talent Kerry Barnes is. I could see this being made into a drama on TV it is that good and has an ending that everybody would be talking about. I am a huge fan of Kerry Barnes and highly recommend all of her books to those who are yet to read them.
Right that's it, Kerry Barnes I have decided is an absolute MUST read author for all those fans out there that love the likes of Jessie Keane, Kimberley Chambers, Anna Smith etc. She has written some amazing books all of which I have loved but this book right here........ohhhh its not just good its an absolute BELTER of a book!
Why I hear you ask is it SO good? Well, fellow readers I will tell you why! Yes she is writing in a genre that is pretty well known as 'gangland' shall we say and yes she writes amazingly but this little gem is pretty original in my eyes. This here is a book that has all the right ingredients but she used a character that you would never in a month of Sundays have put into this story line.
Kara Bannon is a normal woman who has a job, a home and a boyfriend but within the first few chapters that all changes. When she loses her job and her boyfriend Justin in one foul swoop she snaps. What actually happens is she ends up in prison (no that's not a spoiler it's the premise of the book)! But that is where the story goes from great to amazing. Throwing in a well spoken and highly educated woman who is completely naive to the system into a British prison among women who have huge amounts of experience and lots of street smarts when it comes to that sort of environment.
The story line introduces us to some great characters and as the story progresses we also get to see what happens to Justin and how he is dealing with life on the outside whilst we see a huge change in Kara as she adjusts to prison life. The middle of the book felt a little slow in parts but the writing and characters carried it through without me feeling like it impacted the book at all. Then prepare yourself for the final twist in the tail at the end of the book which I literally didn't see coming. I finished this book and can say hand on heart its an absolutely fantastic book which you really do need to read!
Wow another great page turner by Kerry I couldn’t put it down. This is a gripping riveting read from page one and twists and turns right to the end. I highly recommend this book.
Deceit by Kerry Barnes, oh wow what an amazing, heart racing, fabulous contemporary psychological thriller. Once I picked it up, I could not put it down. The novel breaks down long held preconceptions as we enter the world of a women's psyche and see inside the prison walls - both literal and psychological. The walls we build in our mind are as much a barrier as actual brick walls. Life deals us a certain hand, what we do with it is up to us but we must remember "actions have consequences." No matter how much "I wish I could turn the clock back," we cannot. The novel is about truth and lies. "Plotting the next lie." It is up to the reader to work out the fact from the fiction. The problem with lies, is the more we tell, the deeper we go until even we find it hard to distinguish the truth. There is the "power of knowledge." An education informs but knowledge can be "good and bad... [it] can heal and can kill." It is up to us to behave morally and conscientiously. Class prejudices and misconceptions are broken down. There is a wonderful unity and camaraderie of the women in the novel. Those who have it all, seem to keep it all. Those who have nothing, are generous with the little they have. "When you have [nothing]... you tend to share what you have." Envy is a dangerous thing. Envy is not a good motivator. Beware of wanting to walk in another's shoes, the walk is not always as rosy as you think. We all hide secrets. A word of caution - there is a lot of bad language in this novel but it does add to the realism. The characters would not be speaking the Queen's English. Their manner of speech merely serves to produce characters in glorious 3D. I absolutely loved Deceit. I thought the plotline was cleverly constructed. The ending was brilliant, very cleverly conceived by Kerry Barnes. I loved the characters - tough, rough and ready, strong women with mouths like sewers but with hearts of pure gold. Deceit would make a fabulous ITV drama - producers out there please take note. I can picture Joanne Froggatt in the leading role. Absolutely fantastic. I will be reading more by Kerry Barnes. I received this book for free. A favourable review was not required and all views expressed are my own.
This is a story about Kara who after finding out his partner had got somebody pregnant from a one night stand, her life goes completely out of control. Loses her job and even exacts revenge. This does have a lot of strong language so this is not for the faint hearted. The story is decent but when it comes to the last 3rd of the book, it really does kick off with lots of surprises. I was pretty surprised in places although some parts of the book made me think ‘this is really fucked up to say the least.’ A 3.5 to 4 stars for me.
What a story!!! Well probably better to say a whole host of stories that intertwine to make the main story! A bit action, some suspense, some thriller, a dose of psychological, romance, murder, revenge and counter revenge! It really is all here in this book, told in easy narrative and in a ‘real life’ gritty and uncensored style I did think at times the book repeated itself and ‘went on a bit’ but with so many sub stories and plots this meant you had no chance of forgetting things, the language in keeping with the story was ‘ripe’! the part of the book set in a women’s prison may take a few chapters to adjust to the ‘prison lingo’ between characters ( as a Prisoner Cell Block H and Wentworth fan this didnt phase me ) The book ends with a real humdinger of a surprise and totally turns the tables on what I had been thinking about the main character and where the book was leading you to, the author very cleverly ‘deceievd’ the reader ....terrific ending 😃😎 An involved book yet it was easy to pick up and get back into, I would definitely read more from the author 9/10 4.5 stars ( rounded up to 5 on here and Amazon etc )
Deceit was an outstanding, totally addictive read, straight away I was drawn in by the characters especially by Kara, how the story unfolded, it was just amazing with twists and that kept me gripped throughout, I just absolutely love Kerry Barnes.
Kara and Justin have a beautiful home, good jobs and are very happy together. Things suddenly slip away for Kara and following one desperate action she is sent to prison on remand, awaiting trial. The story that follows is gripping and totally absorbed me. There are plenty of plot twists and those in the latter part of the book literally took my breath away. There are so many elements to this book and the way that the plot entwines is so cleverly written. I didn’t hesitate in giving this book an easily deserved five stars.
I always get excited when a Kerry Barnes novel drops into my kindle and was equally thrilled to hear Kerry's 6th novel (DECEIT) which is standalone; and a full-tilt mix of Robin Cook, Tess Gerritsen, and Martina Cole. That is why the book went into the Mashup section of Amazon and went straight to the number 1 spot! We are introduced to the quiet sublime everyday life of Kara Bannon but after a shocking revelation her world turns upside down and finds herself in a world so far removed from her perfect life. Foolish acts and rash decisions land her in a world she had never even contemplated ..... Prison!
After what I thought was a slow start compared to Kerry's other books, I found myself immersed in red herrings, unexpected twists, and an ending so tangible, so unexpected that I had to put the kindle down for a moment to take in what I just read, I really did not expect 'THAT' ending! Though I did find the book a little repetitive in places 'THAT' ending blew me away and Kerry brought everything into context, rounded up everything nicely, it left me reeling that I think that though this book is a standalone a follow up is possibly needed! The story is deliciously clever, Kerry's medical knowledge shines through on the pages of this story, therefore, making this a super twisty, intelligent read.
I very much look forward to reading more stories of the newly crowned Governor of Gangland!
If there’s one thing that this Ginger Book Geek likes, it’s discovering new authors. Although I have several of Kerry’s books on my ever increasing to be read pile, ‘Deceit’ is the first of her books that I have actually read. Going by how much I enjoyed reading ‘Deceit’, I can 100% guarantee that it certainly won’t be the last of her books that I read. I absolutely loved it but more about that in a bit. I couldn’t help but take to Kara Bannon, even if she did irritate me slightly. She’s a hardworking woman, with a high powered and demanding job. She has taken her eye off the ball lately and this has led to a drop in the quality of her work. She isn’t feeling too well at the moment and her mind is overthinking things and working overtime. She lives with her partner Justin in a beautiful home. She is convinced that Justin is cheating on her because there is a distinct lack of passion in the relationship at the moment, where once upon a time they couldn’t keep their hands off each other. It eventually emerges that Justin has been unable to keep his trousers zipped up. Overnight Kara’s dream world crumbles to dust. Justin has walked out on her to live with his pregnant mistress and he wants her out of the house. Kara has been self medicating with pills and taking far more than the recommend dosage. This self medicating has led to her ‘losing’ all sense of time. I really felt for her by this point because she was literally on her own. She had lost her lover, her home and then her job in a matter of hours. She has no family and very few friends. If I could have jumped into the pages of the book to give her a big hug then I would have done. A moment of madness takes over and she deliberately burns down the dream house because she wants Justin to know what it feels like to have nothing. Unintentionally she has also seriously injured a neighbour and it’s touch and go as to whether or not the neighbour survives. This moment of madness made me want to jump inside the pages of the book to give her a slap across the chops with a wet fish then I would have done. Kara admits everything from the start and is imprisoned. To say that she gets one hell of a shock when she goes to prison is an understatement. Kara has to get used to a whole new way of living, of talking, of acting and of coming across people that in the real world, she would cross the road to avoid. Kara has to adapt to survive. Will Kara manage to survive prison? Does prison change her? Will Kara’s luck change? Well for the answers to those questions and more you are just going to have to read the book for yourselves to find out for yourself because I am not going to tell you. Flipping nora this book was one hell of a read, that got the blood flowing and the adrenaline pumping. I was totally addicted from the moment I read the synopsis. It was almost as if the book cast a spell over me because I found that I just couldn’t put the book down until the moment I finished it. My Kindle wasn’t glued to my hand but it might as well have been because it came everywhere with me and I begrudged having to put the book down. If I had to put the book down then I was counting down the time until I could pick it back up again. The more I read, the quicker I read and the quicker the pages were turning. The pages and the time just seemed to fly past in a blur but I didn’t notice because my sole focus was on the book. In next to no time I finished the book, which I was so disappointed about. Don’t get me wrong I was pleased to finish because I knew how the story ended but I enjoyed the story so much that I just wanted the book to continue. ‘Deceit’ is very well written and the author certainly knows how to grab your attention from the start. The author uses such powerful and vivid descriptions that if I closed my eyes I could imagine that I was stood on the street watching the house burn or I was with Kara in the prison. Blimey oh riley if prison life is anything like Kerry describes in this book then I certainly don’t want to go there. I wouldn’t last 5 minutes inside as I am a wimp and easily frightened. Reading this book was much like riding on a very scary and unpredictable rollercoaster ride with lots of twists and turns. There were times when I almost read through my fingers because I feared what was going to happen next but realised that I had to read on to find out how the story ended. To conclude I absolutely flipping well loved reading ‘Deceit’. I wholeheartedly recommend this author and her books to others. Kerry’s books are described as being perfect for fans of Kimberley Chambers and Martina Cole and that is certainly true. I can’t wait to read what comes next from Kerry but in the meantime I will dig out the books I already have in my ‘To Be Read’ mountain and I will be buying the books that I haven’t got. The score on the Ginger Book Geek board is an very well deserved 5* out of 5*.
Was going to give this four stars, but the ending was so ridiculously unbelievable, I had to lose one. Once I'd put aside the exaggerated caricatures of most of the main characters and swallowed the unbelievable number of co-incidences, I quite enjoyed losing myself in the story, but the ending was just a step too far. I'm picky, though. You may well enjoy it as it is. Complicated plot with evidence of some good research.

An eerie phone call plays on her mind and within three days she loses everything – her job, her home and Justin, the only person she thought she could trust.

The gripping new gangland crime thriller from bestseller Kerry Barnes. Perfect for fans of Kimberley Chambers, Martina Cole and Jacqui Rose.
OMFG this book….. Left me speechless! I have read all of Kerry’s books apart from her last one Wicked Lies which I am now dying to read. I had actually forgotten how good a writer Kerry is...Who by the way, has totally smashed it. This is one of those books that I feel the need to shout from the rooftops about. It is absolutely freaking mind blowing.
So I went into this not reading the blurb which is nothing new for me has most of you know. So I had no idea what I was letting myself in for. I have to say that When I started it I kept thinking to myself is this the right book that I am reading because to me it didn't feel like a Kerry Barnes story at all. I actually thought for a moment that she had changed genre….Boy how wrong was I!!
Imagine living in a beautiful home, having brilliant job and a boyfriend to lose it all in a matter of three days. Well this is exactly what happens to Kara Bannon
Starting of a little slower than what I would normally expect from Kerry, Which gives us some brilliant character build up. The author leads the leads the reader into a false pretense. Then steps up a pace that hits you in the face. When the story takes a turn that I wasn't expecting, that was it for me I couldn't but it down. Unlucky for me I had to go to work though where I found myself dying to get back from work to read it.
Has always Kerry does a brilliant job of bringing the characters to life and making them jump out the page.Feeling their emotions you cannot help but get totally wrapped up in this story. There are characters that you will love and hate. Without giving anything away there is one in particular who I just wanted to punch in the face. But you will have to read it for yourself to see who I am talking about.
Just when you think you have it all worked out BOOM the author throws in another shocking twist. Honestly I thought my heart was going to explode on more than one occasion. I lost count of how many times I said OH MY GOD and found myself screaming at my kindle.
Deceit has more twists and turns than a roller coaster, so be prepared for the white knuckle ride of your life. …..Oh and the ending! Kerry... what are you doing to me…. I wasn't expecting that. This is without a doubt her best book yet. I cannot recommend it enough giving it all the freaking stars.
This is a tale of betrayal, manipulation and deceit. Kara has the perfect job, house and boyfriend. Her life seems to be well planned and executed, at least from the outside. Inside is a different matter. In reality her life is slowly crumbling like a piece of old bread.
In the blink of an eye everything goes from rocky to complete destruction. Her boyfriend decides to leave her and that is the beginning of the end. The very next day Kara ends up behind bars. Perfect life waves bye bye, as it disappears into the distance.
Let me just say that although her lawyer mounts an interesting defence and yes it is a valid defence, I still think her actions show a level of worryingly destructive behaviour. Not just an accident or an afterthought. It is a planned annihilation.
Both Kara and Justin are unaware that their every move is being manipulated by someone who has an invested interest in keeping them apart. Someone who is capable of lying about everything.
I just have to have a little moan about the part in the story that infuriated me the most. (Without giving anything away) When Justin decides he can not only swoop in and take what is rightfully ‘his’, when he did it with the support of the newbie – I wanted to slap him round the head.
I can imagine estate dwellers feeling a wee bit stereotyped in this book. Not that there aren’t people who talk like that and swear a lot, and perhaps make up a large percentage of the prison population and or criminal element in the UK. There are also plenty who have careers and don’t aspire to be the next inmate in their local prison.
I absolutely understand that the author wanted to point out how strong the connections are between the people who live in environments that are often low socio-economic areas, and how strong bonds can be forged in prison.
Barnes places all her players on the table where the readers can see them and then proceeds to play a game of screwed-up chess. The reader can see what is coming, but isn’t able to predict everything because the author brings out the occasional twist in the story. It’s an emotional psychological thriller. *I received a copy via NetGalley*
It's difficult to believe I only read my first Kerry Barnes book at the beginning of this year. This is now the 4th one I have read. I have to say from first reading 'Cruel Secrets' I was blown away with the talent this author has for writing. I am truly thankful that a twitter friend messaged me and told me I needed to read 'Cruel Secrets' that I would really enjoy it, because if he hadn't told me, then I would not have gone on to read some of the other books and I wouldn't have read this one yet. Deceit, compared to Kerry's other books, for me felt like a little bit of a slow starter, building up gradually getting you familiar with characters and surroundings. Engaging you slowly into a story that explodes and becomes gripping. I bought the Audible copy of the book so I could read when I felt like reading, and then continue to listen when I had things I needed to do. I flew through my whole house cleaning away while listening, and didn't feel as though I'd been cleaning. I loved listening it. I have to say though the accents done in the audio book at times really felt like I was listening to characters from EastEnders. Brilliantly done. The tale of how life can change in a heartbeat. Not only for you, but for those around you. Who can be trusted, who should you believe. I have to say the twists in this book were first class, just brilliant. I really wasn't expecting what I read. Kerry has a great knack for engaging the reading, dragging you into the pages, becoming part of the story yourself. There was some great turns in this story, that I just didn't see coming. Brilliantly put together tale of 'deceit'
Gripping & guessing until the last page! What a story
Having been a fan of Kerry’s books from the very beginning, I loved all of Ruby books and absolute page turners. My life was then all consumed with working non stop for a long time and then even moreso during this e tire year so my reading list was parked and all and any thoughts of self indulgence where a spare hour to read was involved, was gone. I recently took time out for 3 months and got back to my reading list and boy, it was worth the weight! Kerry has a truly unique imagination and this book doesn’t disappoint. For any fans who’ve read the other books by Kerry, this is on a par on every level. The sweet innocent Kara robbed of her cushy cosy life and the liability that is Lucy who wants it all. Stuck in the middle is Justin, the love of Karas life...
Everything turns disastrously wrong of epic proportions and the dangerous dark and devilish Carl is right there in the thick of it. Read it, you will not be disappointed!
This book has more plots than my local cemetery and will keep you literally glued. I got through it in 2 nights. No spoilers and don’t buy a sample, you’ll only have to buy the book!
I’ve just the last trilogy of Kerry’s to go but all of her books are filled with everything you need/ want. Love, passion, greed, jealousy, murder, psychos and humour. Enjoy!!!
I really enjoyed this book to start with but did feel like a million and one things happened in the last quarter. Not taking away from the book though, there were many twists and turns which were unexpected and surprising and the author pulled in a lot of loose ends. However, I did kind of feel it ended very abruptly and had to go back to see if I had missed a chapter or 2. I felt it needed a little more summing up and explanations, especially with regard to her ex Justin. He wasn’t really mentioned at the end. And the “thing” with Rocco just kind of stopped. No explanation particularly about why or what was said. One minute they’re in love the next it’s done.
Overall a decent read and I have already bought 2 more books by this author to try so will definitely seek more out by her if I like these as well.
Kara and Justin are living together when their lives are blown apart by his infidelity. Kara finds herself in prison after setting their house on fire. This is a story of secrets and betrayal. It is also a story of kinship and loyalty where Kara would least expect to find it.
Kara finds herself embraced by a group of women in the prison when she uses her medical skills to help the leader. This is a gritty portrayal of life in prison where you have to fight for everything, your food, your safety and especially for respect.
There are some seriously good twists in this story and the ending was very surprising. A very enjoyable read and I will definitely be on the lookout for more by this author.
I was so looking forward to starting this new book. I knew it would be good, as I loved Kerry Barnes’ other books.
Deceit is a different story, and I couldn’t put it down. The story kept me going all weekend.
One minute a couple are living together and happy. The next, she is working abroad, and he is unfaithful. I won’t ruin the story for you, but couldn’t believe what happens next! It just got better and better. Who would have thought? And that ending too!
This has to be my favourite Kerry Barnes book yet.
Absolutely fantastic! Kerry Barnes is right up there these days with all the greats of this genre - Martina Cole, Kimberley Chambers, Roberta Kray, to name a few.
And oh God, I didn't see that twist coming!! What a story, it was completely gripping and unexpected.
As always Annie Aldington's narration brought this story and these characters to life, like no other narrator could have. Her work is perfection.
I honestly can't wait for the next two of her Audible books to be released (I've pre-ordered both!) they're drop everything listens for me!
A great women's prison novel. If you liked Wentworth TV series you'll like this. As a story I thought it ended too abruptly - it could have done with a few more chapters describing what happened afterwards to the central characters - I felt a bit cheated and had to go back a few chapters to see if I missed anything in the story. No I didn't. I'm now reading the first of a Trilogy and hoping for a similar great story but extended into 3 novels because I like this writer a lot - and the wonderful narration by Annie Aldington - great accents.
This is the first book I have read by this author .l was hooked from the first page . Read it in just over two days couldn't wait to find out what was going to happen next .Full of twists and turns never expected the ending was totally surprised ! Thoroughly good read would recommend reader won t be disappointed .l am looking forward to reading more books by Kerry Barnes .
This book has me hooked from the first chapter. It had so many twists and turns, it was a real rollercoaster of a read. Kerry Barnes is one of my favourite authors and never fails to seduce me into her books and waiting for the next one. Anyone who is a fan of Kimberley Chambers, Jessie Keane, Mandasue Heller and Martin's Cole really need to add Kerry Barnes to their list of must reads
Fast paced, gripping and utterly unputdownable is how I describe this and from the very first page I was glued. With colourful characters (some I loved, some I hated), the pace never wavered. I feared for Kara when she went to prison but loved the camaraderie among the inmates. With a complex, twisty plot to get stuck into, it had me guessing right until the end. A few loose ends kept me thinking the story had not reached a conclusion but it wasn't a problem. A great read.
Kerry Barnes has done it again salute you Kerry you should be up their standing next Martina Cole when they hand out stars . This book had me on the edge of my seat and I just could not put the book down . The last few chapters where amazing how your mind must work . Kerry get the pen in your hands and start writing the next book .
What a totally amazing book. Being a big fan of Kerry's I was unsure of this book as I love her characters and genre of her previous books but this packs a punch. I was totally sucked in to the story line and never in a million years of got the ending. Best physiological thriller I have ever read.
outstanding brilliant I have loved all four of Kelly batons books I cannot wait for more of the same. There are o
Kelly Barnes is absolutely brilliant her books are outstanding like I say I cannot wait for her next book so I have never done this before but have ordered her next release before it is on the shelves
I enjoyed this and it was easy to finish unlike some books which are hard to contunue reading. It gave a good insight into the minds of two sisters who have had very unfortunate lives. Poor Justin gets more than involved with both females and portrays a perfect victim.
I both loved and hated this book. Sometimes I found the stereotypical characters cringeworthy, other times the plot just seemed to either jump or just not go anywhere. But.... something kept me reading and I'm glad I did. The plot twists were great, the pace was perfect and I never saw the end coming!
