Lauren Esker writes romantic suspense and paranormal romance that’s just a little off the beaten path. Which isn’t surprising since she’s a lifelong Alaskan who is a little off the beaten path herself! (Literally and figuratively.) She also writes graphic novels and scifi/fantasy as Layla Lawlor, and m/m romance as Layla M. Wier.

Metal Wolf is a slower paced, descriptive, and character-driven sci-fi that takes place mostly on Earth. It starts with Rei (H) in a battle since he's a slave forced to fight for the dominant empire. Due to a malfunction in the collar that controls him, he's able to escape unexpectedly and he crash lands on Earth, where he's rescued by Sarah (h). The majority of the story is then focused on working through communication issues, their budding relationship, the question of whether Rei can return to space to look for his surviving friend, and the danger of the empire pursuing him for desertion. The story is written in third person, POVs from H, h, and h's father. No ow/om drama, H is a virgin (technically, there was some training with robots) and h is not, bc discussed.

Sarah and Rei are both sweet and good-hearted characters. While he looks alieny, his people are human-based, with some enhancements, so share many physical characteristics and some cultural ones. The world building of the empire as a whole was fascinating and well-thought out. Trust is built very quickly between these two, as is attraction. There's a small amount of steam with one scene and references to a couple others, but most interactions are them learning about each other and the other's life/world. Sarah's dad is also a great side character who's supportive and loving. Both humans embrace an alien among them surprisingly easily though. The plan to repair the ship Rei arrived in was also unrealistic to me with the major differences between technology and abilities, but this plan dragged on for a while.

There are some more suspenseful scenes involving the government clearly looking for whatever caused the crash while our characters sneak around to collect items, but no sense of urgency until closer to the end of the story when true danger comes into play. The book ends with a HFN but was kind of disappointing to me. It seems like there's a possibility of seeing these two in other books in the series, but I'm not sure. I also had a lot of questions about what was going to happen next for them and a specific character whose situation is also referred to in the brief epilogue (which is h's father's POV). This would have been a four star read for me if not for the ending leaving me feeling so incomplete.

Fourish stars, meaning there’s some doubt

Ok, it’s better than book two in that it doesn’t drag bad guys you thought were dead back for a round 2, seemingly to make the word count.

OTOH, having already read book 2, there’s a huge loose end in this one that’s not resolved because the H is still thought to be dead. And…. I have book 3 and from skimming it, they still don’t know he’s alive. Kinda frustrating there. I assume eventually that loose end will be taken care of.

So at the beginning, apparently one of the remaining members of the team dies in a space battle, the dragon’s psychic scream blows out all the slave controls on our H, and he does what anyone with a brain would do; he hits the proverbial gas and blows the joint.

The h finds him - much later - and after a week or two of hiding him…and his space ship…opportunity presents itself in the form of a small crew of Galatians tracking him down…and well…some would have lived long, fulfilling lives if they’d pretended they didn’t notice that little planet there.

Sarah Metzger, an aspiring astrophysicist, watches a UFO crash land one evening. She rescues the pilot, an alien wolf shifter and runaway slave named Rei. Love blossoms while he tries to find a way back to his world. Then the slave masters come looking for him...

This was a good, solid read. The beginning started strong. The middle dragged a bit, but I forged on and was glad I did, because the exciting ending was worth it.

I love the different alien characters in this series; I hope they each get their own book!

Couldn't Put it Down

This story goes to show humans aren't alone in this universe. I really enjoyed this story and already downloaded the rest of the series available. The writing was intelligent, colorful and full of sci-fi puns and references. It put me in mind of Star Wars, but with shifters! And there was even a dragon!

3 & 1/2 stars rounded up.
This was an alright story, it didn't overwhelm me with excitement or keep me glued to the iPad, or leave me gushing over how wonderful the story was - sort of read. It was good enough to make it thru the book without wanting to give up & quit, good enough to make me consider reading the next book in the series. The flow felt a bit slow over all, with a few places that really dragged a long. There is an odd dynamic with Sarah's father, Sarah & Rei. I think I liked the father Gary the best of the 3 characters. The back & forth inner dialogue with Sarah's angst over giving up everything (her dreams) for her father & the farm & wanting to go into outer-space was tiring. I really didn't see a relationship develop between Sarah & Rei, it was super fast, within weeks, that she seems head over heels for him, though they never actually say they "love" each other. They also can't really communicate for about a week. I think the sex was awkward & too early into the story, which felt like it took away from the developing "relationship" between them & made it seem more about the physical side of the relationship instead of falling in love. But for her to even think of leaving earth with him so quickly & leave behind her father with a disability to run a farm, was pretty hard concept for me to wrap my brain around.

Spoiler: The part that hurt the story for me the most, was the government guys (Men in Black) cooperating with the aliens coming after Rei when there were only 8 of those bad aliens. That just seemed too far fetched for me. Or those Men in Black not pursuing Gary, after Rei & Sarah leave, for answers after they loose an agent.

Fantastic Science Fiction Romance.

I read a lot, and it’s rare for me to post a review. A lot of SFR is more about the D going in the V than it is about the writing.

And Lauren Esker can *write*. She’s set up a complex universe for her readers to enjoy, with shapeshifters, dragons, telepathy and star travel, genetically modified humans and a spot-on look at what life is like in rural Wisconsin. Her narrative flow is excellent, and little side-twists of narration— like accidentally poisoning someone with chocolate— are both reasonable extrapolations and wonderful touches that add more life to the world she’s created.

More than that, I love the way she portrays her characters, with real sensitivity and with convincing interpersonal interactions. They are three dimensional, with all that entails.

In the end, this book is about making a connection with someone that goes beyond their appearance, and finding a way to make that relationship work. This book gives a nod to all the correct forms of the tropes without plodding through them like someone filling out a paint-by-numbers kit; you can tell Ms. Esker had a lot of fun writing it.

I certainly enjoyed reading it and will be looking for the next book in the series.

About Goodreads 3.75 stars / Amazon 4.25 stars. I owe Lauren Esker an apology for not getting at this story sooner. As you can see from my "shelves", I received the file as an ARC (direct from the author), but I neglected to get at it until now. I kind of owe myself an apology, too, because I wasn't sure I'd like it as much as her UF/PNR (the reason I didn't start it right away, which allowed the file to get "buried"), yet, as it turns out, I definitely did.

Both leads (and the heroine's father) are well-developed, likable characters, with their own strengths and griefs, and though the romance happened quickly, I found it believable, especially since Sarah was always fascinated by space (though there's one early scene of Sarah that, well, ...). I put the book in both my "space opera" and "near-future/now" SF sub-shelves because, while it starts mid-space-battle, most of the book takes place in contemporary rural Wisconsin. As the protagonists worked together, trying to hide Rei and to get him back into space (where he felt like he abandoned his last surviving beloved friend), the growth of understanding was natural. Neither side was portrayed as annoyingly stupid about the other culture, though Sarah did have to face a few realities that her own peaceful upbringing had allowed her to be naïve about, considering she knew he was raised to be a warrior. The language barrier was addressed using future tech, but not as an "instant fix"; I think the broken-English translations during the process were done well. I'm eager to see more of the Galatean Empire and its other modified-human races, starting with Metal Dragon (coming later this year, but not yet in GR's database).

The one area I still had questions about at the end (other than, Which of Rei's varied sept-siblings are actually still alive?, which is obviously where the rest of the series is going) relates to a development I'll have to mark as a SPOILER.

I almost forgot to mention the proofreading. It was overall quite good. However, there were a couple chapters where the initial drop-cap got messed up, a couple uses of what may be a regional syntax but which I'd call the wrong participle form ("Animals need fed", "doing what needs done"), and I believe just one simple typo ("Was this was" for "Was this what").

Oh, P.S., this story uses one trope I first loved on TV's Beauty & the Beast (the "real" one, with Ron Perlman, Masques, whoa, 31 years ago?!): on Halloween night, anyone can be seen out in public! And I suspect Ms. Esker is as fond as I am of Anne McCaffrey's Decision at Doona, given an allusion to a book cover and "Na'vi" Rei's rope tail.

*** Minor Spoilers ***
This book is the first of the Warriors of Gallatea series. There are 4 books and a few stories. In addition, the author says she may write more stories in the universe.
Rei is a slave in the Gallatean empire. He was taken from his planet as a child, made a slave, and trained to be a warrior. Rei is a shapeshifter and can turn into a wolf. He was augmented with various modifications. He was trained with a sept, a group of other children who were slaves from different planets.
After years of servitude and watching the children in his sept die, during the midst of battle, he takes an opportunity to escape and “jumps” his spaceship to Earth. He gets there accidentally and his spaceship crashes.
The crash is seen by Sarah, who lives on a farm in rural Wisconsin with her father. She rescues Rei and decides not to report it. She believes that he would become a prisoner and studied. She takes him back to her farm.
Rei and Sarah fall in love and are very sweet to each other. However, the authorities are on the lookout for the spaceship, and Rei and Sarah are worried their time together is limited. The pressure continues to build as Rei tries to repair his spaceship while the authorities linger in their area.
Sarah has a great relationship with her father, Gary. She stayed at the farm to help him after an accident. Her mother has died, and they both miss her.
The pace of the story is very fast, and the relationship does not have a lot of time to develop. The story happens over a few days. Spoiler…there is a climax that forces Rei and Sarah to make a decision.
Note: it would have been nice to have a list of the children in the sept, along with their abilities at the beginning of the book.
I decided to read the series.

Yay, an excellent SFR book! I really liked the world that the author created and look forward to the rest of the series.

This is a "meatier" book than some of the other SFR I've read through Kindle Unlimited, so I had to adjust my expectations at first, but once I realized this wasn't going to be a quick & sexy romp, I settled in and became absorbed in the story. At first I wasn't sure that Sarah and Rei could have a happy ending since they come from such different worlds and Sarah especially has a commitment to her father, and to a lesser degree, to her education. Rei didn't have a lot to go back to, but staying on Earth seemed impossible given the need for him to stay hidden and the level of investigation his arrival created.

Of course we do get a happy ending for our lead couple, though I'm very interested to see what happens to them next. Spoilers ahead!

A Great Read

This KU library selection is a great series opener. The main characters are relatable and likable. The setting is vivid in its detail without becoming repetitive. And the storyline isn't the typical blue alien novella I've become accustomed to. Rei is a wolf shifter, a pilot, and a warrior slave to the Galatian Empire. When his slave collar shorts out during a battle, he seizes the opportunity to jump his battle bot through space to an unknown destination, escaping.

Sarah Metzger is a farm girl in northern Wisconsin who takes her telescope to a nearby lake to stargaze. After a spaceship crash lands in that lake, she pulls an unconscious man from the frigid water, loads him in her pickup truck and deposits him in her barn. Neither of them knows what the future holds, whether the Galations will look for their awol deserter, if he can piece together his broken spacecraft, or if she can keep a bright blue alien hidden from her father and her neighbors. It doesn't take long for her father, Gary, to discover Rei, however. So how long will it take for the Galatians to track down their missing pilot?

Totally love this author

I love the stories although handcuffed is still my favorite the other books along with this one is great. The book isn't filled with sex scenes but just enough. I really like the fact that lots of action and story background. Some books nowadays have more sex scenes than story but not Me Esker. Her stories have lots of story and action. This book or new series is about an alien who escaped to earth and is rescued by a farm girl. The fact that she loves space and is star gazing when she sees a ship crash into the lake she parks by. She then helps reduce him or our hero . He is a slave that was freed by his friend another slave. Now how they become slaves you have to read the book and of course the action and escape not only from the slavers or actually government and also our own government who makes a deal with the government or galations.

I really enjoyed this series and would have happily spent much longer in this world than the four books (+ 2 novellas) allowed. The spice is on the low side, but the plots are fun and varied, and the writing is engaging. Angst is mostly external to the main relationship, so no big third act misunderstandings to worry about. Some very well done emotional beats—I think I cried at least once in each book—and characters I found believable and/or immediately relatable.

Really, the worst thing I can say is that I wish there had been more. I was really hoping that we’d get to see Rei’s first discovery that . But overall, the series wraps up in a satisfying way, and I’m happy to have stumbled upon it.

Gripping story

It's been awhile that an author managed to thrill me so thoroughly with a story. You had a seamless blend of SciFi, shifters, romance, drama and heartbreaking tragedies. Rei is a soldier who by accident is released from his slave collar. He uses this opportunity to escape and crashes on our planet in rural America. Sarah rescues him and tries to help him get back on his feet to get off our planet before the men in black or his slavers can find him.
The chemistry is real, and sure you the romance, but I'm taking the humanity and compassion and friendship and humility shown by Sarah, her dad and Rei, was fantastically portrayed. You will not be disappointed by this book!

This was so good! I loved the worldbuilding, it had the sense and rational thought out aspects that we don’t really see in sci fi fiction all the time. Like the fact that Rei couldn’t fix his ship miraculously. The romance was secondary, (i didn’t actually feel the connection between Sarah and Rei really, like he was a hot alien and Sarah was the first decent female out of his slavehood he’d seen that’s it) though that in no way means i didn’t like the characters. I loved how shy, polite and observant Rei was, and Sarah was just acting like any one of us who came across a hot male alien honestly.

I’m certain this series will be in my top 10 (maybe even in top 5) sci fi romances.

Awesome story about space slave who fights for freedom

This story is about an alien race who enslave other aliens to fight their Wars. Through circumstances an blue alien slave is set free and lands on Earth. This is his adventures and these fights for freedom.

The characters are relatable, sometimes funny, and uniquely interesting at they evolve to complete the story plot and scenario. Most enjoyable and highly recommended book for readers of sci-fi Romance. I can hardly wait for the second book to come out Metal Dragon.

Great story

Very interesting story with a lot of room for more books to add to make a series. I have read a couple of others by this author and enjoyed them immensely.
Rei is an alien who crash lands on Earth after a battle somewhere in space. Sarah is the human who finds him and helps him heal, rescues his ship from a lake and falls in love with him, a blue wolf shifter alien.
I can’t wait to read more of this series.

A fun, does-what-it-says-on-the-tin book, with a guy (werewolf!) from outer space on the run from bad guys and a girl with her eyes on the stars. Throw in a dad who needs some help, some SHIELD types with the lack of ethics that implies, and a slow-burning romance and you've got an enjoyable read. I'll keep my eye out for the sequel.

I stalled out near the end

I finally finished this book after losing interest about two-thirds of the way through the book. Once the alien overlords showed up on Earth, the charm of a blue alien on Earth was lost. The characterization never moved beyond stereotypes, but the romance was good and the action was fine. Not sure if I'll read the next book or not.

I enjoyed this a lot. I really liked Rei, and the glimpses we got to see of the world he comes from. (Reminded me of Jupiter Ascending, in a positive way.) I even like his "siblings" already. I liked Sarah too, and Gary. The pacing worked well, the tension/action increased at just the right time.

Sarah and Rei

Sarah loved the stars. She wanted to be an astrophysicist. One night she was watching the stars and boom, a spaceship crashed right where she is. Adventure and romance.

I am seriously considering getting the rest of the books in the series as it was that good.
