What a fun concept! Story set in a Senior Convalescent Center, where Marcy Collins, due to an accident is temporarily located. Though in a wheelchair, & Before her former partner knows it she’s assembled a crew of senior sleuths to assist her in solving a cold case! The unconventional ways they assemble clues & follow leads is a delightfully entertaining story. My Thanks to the author for furnishing me with this book to read......

4 1/2 ⭐s! I truly delighted in this one. LATE FOR DINNER is not only the first book in the Senior Sleuths series by M.K. Scott, it is a spin-off from another series by Scott. Four characters in LATE FOR DINNER — Herman, Gus, Jake, and Eunice — make their print debut in the fantastic Painted Lady Inn Mysteries. Because I enjoyed them a great deal in Scott's first series, I was excited to find them featured in LATE FOR DINNER.

[A little backstory: The Painted Lady Inn Mysteries are about a North Carolina Victorian Bed and Breakfast (with an alarmingly high murder rate!) and innkeeper Donna. Herman, Donna's only friendly neighbor, appears in Books 1-5; at the end of Book 5, he moves to Indiana to live in a retirement center with his army buddies Gus and Jake. Eunice is a pushy, nosy guest in Book 2. In Book 7 Herman, accompanied by Gus and Jake, returns to the inn to officiate as Justice of the Peace at Donna's wedding; Eunice stows away in their car, thus becoming a pushy, nosy wedding guest.]

In LATE FOR DINNER, Herman, Gus, and Jake, now at the Indiana retirement center, team up with ex-Vegas showgirl Lola to help former detective Marcy solve a cold case. They call themselves the Way Over the Hill Gang. They don't let their age or infirmities stop them from solving their case — two cases, in fact. It's fun to see the gang sleuthing, and sneaking out of the home so they can go sleuthing — and even more fun to see how they sneak around to keep the pushy, nosy Eunice from sleuthing with them.

LATE FOR DINNER captured my interest right away, with its unusual setting, relatable and realistic characters, and humorous banter. I absolutely love the ending. It's very cozy, and makes me eager to read the next Senior Sleuth mystery! This is definitely a series I will continue.

Note: I received a complimentary copy of LATE FOR DINNER in exchange for my voluntary honest review. All opinions shared are 100% my own.

Marcy Collins is a former police officer who is at the convalescent center, following an accident which left her confined to a wheel chair. To keep her mind active, Marcy asks her former partner, Lance, to allow her to investigate some of the old cold cases. Marcy gathers a group of the seniors at the center to form a team.

Gus and Jake are long time residents of the area and know their way around. Lola was a showgirl in Las Vegas and is very astute in reading people. Herman, who enjoyed helping Donna and Mark solve crimes in Legacy, N.C., still had his car and could come and go as he pleased. As usual, one of their ongoing tasks will be to avoid Eunice Ledbetter, the center's favorite disrupter.

The first case the team tackles is the death of Sue Ellen Makowski, which occurred twenty-two years earlier. Although suspicious, the death was quickly ruled a suicide and closed without a close examination.

Was Sue Ellen's death really suicide or murder? If murder, who killed her and why? Can the senior sleuths unravel the clues to solve this 22-year old mystery?

This is a great start to a new series with hilarious characters and plenty of twists and turns. It has a few favorite characters from the Painted Lady Inn series and some new characters that we get to become acquainted with.

Marcy Collins is in a retirement home due to an accident that left her unable to perform her job. Her partner, Lance, is assigned to help keep her mind working. Unknowning to him, what he does is he sets the wheels of motion together for Marcy and a group of sharp-eyed, witty, and often cantankerous senior sleuths together. They take on an old cold case that was determined as a suicide. Will this group of hodge podge senior citizens solve a 22 year old murder? Can they find the killer without being killed themselves? Take a look into the world of retirement homes, just don't count these people out! They didn't live this long for nothing! Get the book, it's great!!!! I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.

A group of seniors and a convalescing detective set out to solve a cold case murder. The premise and the characters are fun and the mystery is simple but interesting. The characters have fun engaging with each other and searching for clues. However, the story moves very slowly and the clues don't really come together well. The ending is interesting and leaves us believing the group will continue to try solving cold cases. I liked the characters a lot but I hope that future books have a stronger mystery with clues that lead up to the solution.

Oh what a fun book! “Late for Dinner” by M.K. Scott is a wonderful story of senior sleuths, living in an assisted living home, solving a cold case. I could easily picture my mom’s assisted living residence and some of her friends, sneaking out and meeting secretively to solve a ‘whodunit.’

I enjoyed this book so much, that I immediately purchased two more books by the married duo. If you are needing some laughs in your life, this is the book for you!

It is easy to discount people in an old age home as being "over the hill" and incapable of even brushing their own teeth!
This story line has such a group investigating a murder!
An enviable cast of characters and an interesting story line

Herman, the former handy man of the Painted Lady Inn, now lives in an assisted living facility, where he misses his old life in Legacy and wonders about his worth in the world. Then Marcy Collins, a younger resident recovering from a traumatic car crash during a police chase, gathers him and few other spunky residents to help her solve cold cases passed on by her former partner, Lance, since no one in the department has time to reopen them. Lola, the retired Vegas showgirl, and war veterans Jake & Gus round out the team they call The Way Over the Hill Gang as they sift through old evidence to determine if heiress Sue Ellen Makowitz’s death was really suicide, a conclusion Marcy and Lance never believed.

Poring over old papers, they find two suspects — Sue Ellen’s husband, Todd, who remarried soon after her death, and Mabel, the couple’s former maid. The team sets out on various discovery tasks — Marcy interviews Mabel, while Herman and Gus trail Todd and the retired police chief on the local golf course with a parabolic mike. Jake’s niece, Katie, who works in the nursing home office, offers them computer time, and Lola applies all the flattery skills she learned in Vegas to suss out information from Todd’s current wife, Jill, who she befriends on social media. As they plow through evidence and suspects, the motive and killer become clear, and the gang has their hands full capturing the person who ended Sue Ellen’s life.

I really enjoyed this first novel of this new series and look forward to more. Scott portrays all her characters as fully-developed and vibrant individuals, not the sad shells employed by lesser writers, and it’s immensely entertaining to watch the gang progress from restless boredom to savvy crime-solvers who actually start enjoying their life in the assisted living center. The ending clearly sets up more adventures for The Way Over the Hill Gang, and I look forward to following them.

LATE FOR DINNER M K Scott
An absolutely delightful story, the wisdom of what they had learned on the job, and thru the years. For Marcy being a cop and walking a beat. Lola as a showgirl learned how to sum people up. They all had talent and decided to do something, one the dog food they were given to eat. A cold case to solve, to keep their minds sharp. This was funny, entertaining, and could see more about these senior sleuths. Given ARC for my voluntary review and my honest opinion.

Senior sleuths always amuse me, most likely because I’m a senior myself and would like to think my brain would still be lively if I end up in an assisted living facility 😉 Solving crimes would be right up my alley and much more fun than playing bingo or doing arts and crafts. I mean, think about it—surely years of reading mysteries would pay off then, right?

Late for Dinner introduces a few elements to the senior sleuth concept that are a little different from what I’m accustomed to seeing. The leader of this small pack of investigators is not a senior herself; Marcy is in the assisted living home to hopefully recover from a crippling car accident and she was, in fact, a police detective, waiting to see if she can go back to desk duty or will be forced to retire. Also, the first case they look into has no connection to any of them so there’s no personal impetus to solve this cold case.

What the Way Over the Hill Gang does have is a yearning for something interesting to do and each member has expertise to offer, such as Lola’s sharp eye and ability to read people. Herman, Jake and Gus all served in the military in World War II and bring relevant experience and skills to the mix while Eunice, on the periphery and not officially part of the gang, is a world-class gossip and can ferret out almost anything that’s out of the norm. I liked all these people a lot, even when they were annoying as all get out.

Watching the gang work to prove that a woman had not committed suicide years ago was a lot of fun despite a couple of issues. The writing seemed a little stilted to me, to the point that I occasionally had to read a passage again to make sure I got it right. Also, I never could get a handle on when this is taking place—there are references to techniques and items that point to today but the three men would have to be in their 90’s and it seems unusual they would all be so active,. When all is said and done, though, I don’t really care so much and will certainly move on in the series.

DNF because it reads like a spin-off series.
I was able to recognize the characters Herman is referring to as the MCs of The Painted Lady Inn Mysteries series though am not familiar with the author’s works enough to pin down the one Marcy refers to.
I’ll see if I can get my hands on Murder Mansion and the other first in series before I make up my mind if I’ll give this series a second chance or delete all books I already own from my library without reading

Senior Centers aren't the ideal living place that brochures make them out to be. In fact it has been discovered that many brochures are full of stock photos and misrepresented fact about the living center. In this case not only was all that true, but there was more going on that displeased everyone having to do with the deteriorated quality of food being served. But for a small group living in the center, there was a deep seated resentment of the general treatment of them and the fact that for all their money, it wasn't a rewarding experience at all. One person convalescing in the center was an under 50 year old policewoman named Marcy. Temporarily wheelchair bound and recovering from a head injury that left her a little foggy at times, Marcy knew she had to get the gray matter working or she would be forced out of the police department despite her young age. She works on the sly with her former partner, Lance, to try and solve some cold cases. For this she recruits a small group of seniors that might remember the town at the time of the original crimes. Their help will help her get her brain functioning better as well as hopefully solve some crimes. Recruits are bridge partners Lola, Herman, and Jake, and Jake's non-bridge playing friend Gus. Together they take on a 20 year old "suicide" of a well known society lady who was known for efforts in saving rescue animals.

What follows is a fun book about crime solving, Senior Center living, nosey residents, sneaking out and around and general fun poked at seniors and their lives. Chuckles and even full blown laughs (meeting in a cleaning supply closet) move the mystery along in a lighthearted yet successful way. I have a feeling we will see more of this gang and more cold case mysteries to be solved. While I hope Marcy can regain her strength and return to her job, I hope it isn't too soon! I want to read more Senior Sleuths Books!

I loved this story. Marcy, who had been a detective on the police dept. and was hurt while working is convalescing at the Senior Center. Her old partner has decided to giver her a cold case to work on. She needs to have something to do that will help to get the fog out of her brain due to the head injury. She has recruited a few of the senior citzens to help her solve it. She chooses her bridge partners. Herman who has his own car and can come and go as he pleases and had helped solve crimes in N. C. Lola , a Vegas showgirl who could read people. And Jake who knew his way around the Center and the city. She then includes Jake's friend Gus who was an explosive expert during the war.
It was enjoyable to read how these five went about their investigating. They also thought maybe they could do something about the nasty food the residents were being given. That was a problem that needed to be solved too.
Did they solve the cold case? Was it suicide or murder? Did the resideents rise up and rebel for being given dog food to eat? Get a copy and come along with this group. See if you can figure it out before they do and have some laughs along the way. You'll be glad you did.
This story is well thought out, well written and flows nicely. Characters are fleshed out.
I voluntarily received a copy of this book and I'm voluntarily posting a review. My opinion is entirely my own.

Retirement facilities are filled with daily activities and can be boring. Good thing these seniors are not interested in the planned. Instead, they solve cold cases, well one anyway with plenty more to come in the upcoming books. This is the first book in this series and it is truly a fun and interesting reading experience. Love the characters and how they navigate life at the facility. As a spinoff of the Painted Lady Inn series, Herman and cronies now have their own senior sleuth series. You will really enjoy this story. It is full of feisty seniors who refuse to grow old gracefully. Instead, they want to have as much excitement and adventure as possible. What a great idea.

What a fun mystery. This story serves as a reminder that older people still have great skills. This is the first book in a new series. A disabled police officer is re-cooperating in a seniors' convalescent center. To help keep her mind sharp will her body recovers, the officer's partner brings her cold case files.Soon Marcy, the officer, has recruited several seniors to help her solve the case. This is an interesting premise. The characters are well done and the plot is well crafted. For me it was a page turner I read in one sitting!

A good start to a new spin off, with new characters and Herman from the Painted Lady inn. I enjoyed the fact that these sleuths were old enough to know better but certainly young in heart enough not to care. Between the lot of them was a wealth of knowledge to draw from and yet they were well able to get up to some high jinks, especially Eunice who was prepared to take on anyone - it was almost a pity that she was not part of the gang! Nice easy reading with a good dose of humour. I received this ARC and this is my unbiased, honest review

Weak ending but the rest was great

A really good read until the ending. After all the hype it just felt weak and unconvincing. The characters however are delightful from our approaching middle age police officer (in a wheelchair after a getting involved with a desperate criminal) to the inquisitive, snoopy, gossipy senior who everyone avoids. Loved their quirks and short comings whilst the banter was likely and at times amusing.
Being stuck in the retirement centre whilst she recuperate has her going up the wall. Until she given a chance to look into old cold cases. Like the death of the socialite. Her death was ruled suicide but her gut says it's more than that. Enlisting the help of several fellow members (some former army personnel and a Vegas showgirl) they start investigating. Watch as they try to cope with new technology, the resident nosy Nellie and the shortfalls their bodies display. Will their different skills solve what actually happened to the dead woman?

What a fun cozy murder mystery! Marcy, a detective is sent to this assisted living complex even though she's not a senior, to recuperate from an accident and she's bored! She convinces her Lance, detective partner to let her look at some cold cases and agrees. She puts together a group of senior sleuths and call themselves the Way over the hill gang! They can help her do what she physically can't. This rag-tag group didn't let their age get in the way, they were thrilled to be involved in something so exciting to them. We are treated to solving murders that are really cold cases, the workings of Marcy's group with all their varied experiences coming together and lots of humor along the way. I really liked this book and can see myself there as one of the seniors! With lots of smiles and chuckles, I loved this book. I can't wait to see what this group has in store next. I received and ARC of this book but the opinions expressed here are strictly my own.

Absolutely incredible read!!!!

It's not often I enjoy a book this much! The Way Over The Hill Gang is a group of feisty seniors living in a retirement/care facility who tackle cold cases! The first in the series it describes the process of becoming the team of sleuths. The author hits the nail on the head describing how each member feels regarding being a 'senior'~ we all want to be considered relevant and productive. As seniors we all know we are one fall away from a broken hip, one set of lost car keys away from never driving again! As the character Lola puts it "a VCR in a garage sale!" Each character has a set of unique traits, including gossip Eunice who spends most of the book trying to get into the gang! Love it....and recommend it to readers young and old! It's more than a ten star book!

This was an enjoyable fun read about a group of senior citizens who decide to investigate a cold case, the death of a socialite which was deemed to be suicide. On their initial glance, it seemed a very rushed conclusion with no obvious deep investigation undertaken. The sleuths take it upon themselves to look into whether it was really a suicide or a murder.

I quite enjoyed it. The different characters were all fun in their own quirky and I particularly enjoyed their increasingly desperate attempts to avoid Eunice. The ending was disappointing though which was a bit of a let-down and it felt a bit rushed. That said, I will look into reading more in this series to see what escapades they further embark upon.

Late For Dinner, MK Scott's opener to her Senior Slueths series, presents readers with a relatable group of seniors living in an assisted living residence. Led by retired detective Marcy Collins, the group includes 3 former veterans Herman, Jake, and Gus and a former Las Vegas showgirl Lola. The quintet of seniors uses their life experiences to help solve a cold case from Detective Collins past.
Late For Dinner is a quick moving story with a few carefully placed twists meant to keep the reader guessing, which in my case worked beautifully! I was stumped!
I reccomend Late For Dinner to others enjoying lighthearted cozies. Looking forward to the rest of the series.

For Lola, retirement stunk. There was nothing to do, especially since her favorite crime show was replaced by some teen drama.

My god, this reads old and slow. How many geezers were there?

A mission to solve a cold case. Really, this was just to give them something to do. I thought this would be a good series to get into, but the whole thing kind of puts you to sleep. If I couldn’t get through the first book, there’s no way I can get through the series.

Not worth it.

A great story to start off a fun series.

Whether referring to this entertaining and energetic group of retired folks as ‘The Way Over the Hill Gang’ or ‘Senior Sleuth Service’ doesn’t really matter, does it? They get the job done. I fell in love with each and every member of the group. They are simply amazing! I want to be just like them when I get to be their age.

This was a clean, fun, and easy read. A wonderful whodunit that I read in one evening. Kudos to the authors!

Senior fun and antics!

When an unlikely group of seniors join ranks to help injured police officer, Marcy, investigate a cold case, all kinds of situations crop up to complicate solving this unsolved crime. But seniors rule and not only solve the crime, but plan a dance and a garden too!

Cold case for some mental and physical exercise. The elderly and infirm may have been 'put out to pasture,' but they are still actively pursuing justice. They also have a problem with the food being prepared for them in the senior center. It was fun to follow along with them on their adventures. I won a copy from the author.

I found the beginning slow, but there was enough going on that I wanted to give it more of a chance so I kept going. Almost half way in, it really picks up, but I found the ending lacking.
I gave it three stars (liked it) rather than two stars (it was ok) because I really enjoyed the second half, before the ending.

Interesting concept.

So many people feel life has passed them by in nursing facilities. It was fun watching these seniors getting involved in life again to solve cold criminal cases!
