I've only been able to track down a handful of interior decorating books on this topic, and this was definitely my favorite. Despite having been published in the early nineties, the decor depicted here felt classic and contemporary. I loved the geographic arrangement of the chapters and the intelligently written commentary. So much inspiration here.
I saw a book with the same title as this one advertised in a catalog, and thought it looked interesting, so I sought it out at our library. Unfortunately, the library didn't have the book I'd seen pictured, but had this earlier edition of it -- the author was the same, but the cover photo was different, and I think this book is about a decade older than the updated edition I was seeking. As a coffee table book it's very nice with loads of photos, but as a decorating book it wasn't to my tastes, at all. I'd still like to see the updated version because its cover photo was much more to my liking. I don't know if it's fair to rate a decorating book poorly simply because I wouldn't style my home after the rooms featured in it, but I'm not sure how else to rate this. Excellent photos and high-quality printing, but it will only appeal to you if you like your house decorated in a style that almost seemed Victorian... lots of frills and floral prints and old paintings. Also, many of the rooms looked cluttered to me and full of far too much stuff. To each his own :)
