From one of the foremost mystery writers for young adults comes a gripping double mystery about a high school student who finds out that a stranger has kept a secret file on her entire life.
Kristi Evans and her parents can't understand why police detectives are telling them that a man named Douglas Merson has been shot. They've never heard of him. But it becomes important when they learn that Mr. Merson has kept a secret file on Kristi for her entire life. Suddenly Kristi finds herself investigating who this man is and why he has intruded on her privacy.
When Kristi goes to see Mr. Merson in the hospital, she discovers he is a professional artist; he even offers to help her pursue her own dream of being an artist. Kristi has always wanted someone with whom she could share her passion for art. Her parents not only don't understand it, they want her to do something more practical. Now this stranger seems to be offering Kristi the piece that has been missing from her life all along, but at what cost to her relationship with her parents? Who is this man who seems too good to be true?
Author of more than one hundred books, Joan Lowery Nixon is the only writer to have won four Edgar Allan Poe Awards for Juvenile Mysteries (and been nominated several other times) from the Mystery Writers of America. Creating contemporary teenage characters who have both a personal problem and a mystery to solve, Nixon captured the attention of legions of teenage readers since the publication of her first YA novel more than twenty years ago. In addition to mystery/suspense novels, she wrote nonfiction and fiction for children and middle graders, as well as several short stories. Nixon was the first person to write novels for teens about the orphan trains of the nineteenth century. She followed those with historical novels about Ellis Island and, more recently for younger readers, Colonial Williamsburg. Joan Lowery Nixon died on June 28, 2003—a great loss for all of us.
We're now in the late 90s, and while this book brings back a lot of her old tropes, it's become somewhat generic in atmosphere. I'm gonna guess that now that we're at the end of her career (and her life) Nixon kind of fell back on how she knew how to write and let the world change around her without too much comment on it. I did appreciate in the last few books that things like newer technology made an appearance, but this one seems to be void of, well, anything that sets it in a particular time and it feels a little off because of it.
This book is -- kind of weird. The whole thing starts out that this dying man is asking for a sixteen year old girl due to a plot twist that is... a bit odd. Kristi goes to seek him out - and learns they have a shared interest in art. And then gets herself involved in some weird art theft shenanigans. None of it is really that interesting. And Kristi herself, while being one of the more competent protagonists in one of these books, is about as dull as a block of wood.
It does feel like a classic Nixon. We're back in Texas. There's issues about college and parents who are kind of pathetic - including somewhat depressed mom. There's a hilarious attempt at a romance that lasts, like a few chapters and is so obligatory it seems like Nixon was mandated to include it -- because the dude not only has very little page time, Kristi barely seems interested, and the guy just has no real part to play in the novel.
There isn't much of a mystery here either. A lot of time is spent on why this dude wants Kristi's attention and there's some clues that point to the guy's son having a connection with Kristie's mother. But it drags out in the most boring of ways, and by the time we get a resolution it makes you question why we went through all of the things we did.
Overall, this book is mostly forgettable. There's just not enough going on in the book to make it that intriguing. It's sad that even though this is closer to one of her thrillers, the trend of these being a bit more boring than her original books is... sad. Ah well.
Fast-paced, exciting mystery story with resourceful heroine and a satisfying conclusion. I was surprised that this was written in 1999 because of its very dated portrayal of IVF ("test tube babies") as somehow sinister or potentially making a person not really a part of their family. I would have guessed early '80s. But I really enjoyed the book.
Also to all the teachers out there who assign their students to write a review on Goodreads--you are creating a lot of half-hearted or inaccurate reviews of books. That's all.
Who are you ? by :Joan Lowery Nixon The book that I choice to read is “ Who are you ?” By:Joan Lowery Nixon , the book have one hundred and eighty four page .The reason why I decided to read this book was because I like the mystery and the cover caught my attention and also Mrs. Morgan the ESL teacher recommended me , because she think that it is easy for me .

I recommend this book because from the moment that you start reading you feel curious too see what will happen later .
This book was not the mystery I was expecting. I am usually very good at guessing who done it and I was right again. I love Joan Lowery Nixon's writing.
Kristi Anne Evans found out that a man had kept a folder filled with pictures of her, but soon later she found the man who was stalking her. His name is Douglas Merson. This genre of book is mystery and suspense. I thought that this book is good because it has a good plot.
This takes place mostly in daylight, but the story starts at night. It was late at night at the Evan house when the doorbell rings and Kristi parents just stare at each other and at Kristi. A woman was at her door asking if her and her family knows who Douglas Merson is. She is asking this because he has been shot and evidence was found in his house that he has a folder full of pictures of Kristi. Mr. Merson is in the hospital and Kristi wants to see him to ask some questions of why he has pictures of her when she was younger for years. There are no pictures of him in the folder or in his house. Kristi goes to Mr. Merson’s house to ask some questions. At the door appears a man but he is certainly not Mr. Merson. Kristi was about to ask questions until a woman named Alanna Chase interrupted her question asking. She had to see him as soon as possible, so she sneaks in the hospital with her friend Lindy. She sees that he is wrapped up in bandages so she can’t see him clearly. Soon enough Kristi sees Mr. Merson with her parents in a few days so she is able to ask some questions to Mr. Merson. While she waits for the day she sees Mr. Merson, she asks Ms. Chase questions about Mr. Merson. Alanna says that if she keeps on asking questions about Mr. Merson, her life will be in danger. Then again she sneaks out to see Mr. Merson in the hospital and she sees that there is a person or a doctor bending over Mr. Merson’s bed, a large pillow in his hands. She can hear Mr. Merson muffled screaming. She goes up to the person but before she can see the face the person swings the pillow at her and she goes unconscious. She soon wakes up yelling that someone tried to kill Mr. Merson. Mr. Merson can’t speak, so he writes down what he wants to say to Kristi. They both talk about how they both like art and how Kristi wants to see the art that she saw in Mr. Merson’s house. After that she wanted to ask more questions to Mr.Merson but Detective Nims told her she had to leave because Nims had some questions of her own for Mr. Merson. Kristi heard that Mr. Merson needed a bodyguard. Soon again Kristi visits Mr. Merson again and Kristi sees the bodyguard and his name is Gurtz. She talks to Mr. Merson and he draws a sketch of him. Mr. Merson has a son named Roger and Kristi’s mom was in the same honors program at the University of Houston. Probably she knew Roger. To find out if that was true she called the university and asked if her mom knew Roger Merson. the man said that he committed suicide, but he wasn’t known as Roger Merson he was known as Chip Blair. When she was done with the call Kristi told her mom that Chip is Roger Merson’s son. It is now the day Kristi and her family gets to see Mr. Merson. Kristi’s mom asks her why he has pictures of her in a folder. It has been only a few minutes and all they were talking about was art, but before Kristi’s mom could ask again he wrote that he was tired. A few days after Kristi visited Mr. Merson again but this time there was gas inside the room. Kristi called the cops and Mr. Merson was sent to the hospital. Kristi visits him and Mr. Merson writes why he has pictures of her in a folder. It is because Roger wanted a child, and Roger knew how much Mr. Merson wanted a grandchild but he couldn’t as revenge Roger did not get the child. A few days passed and Kristi was called by Gurtz to go to Mr. Merson’s house because he wants to see her but she needs to go to school. She also didn’t want to see Mr. Merson because of what he said to her the day before. She calls Sergeant Balker and tells him that she thinks that Alanna Chase is the one who tried to kill Mr. Merson. She thinks that because she discovered that Ms. Chase was not in New York Pierre Hotel. She goes to Mr. Merson’s house and she sees Mr. Merson. she asks why Gurtz is not here and he does not know. Sh asks who hired Gurtz as a bodyguard and they realize that Landreth is the one who hired Gurtz. Then she asks why Mr. Merson asked her to come to the house. Then he wrote “I didn’t” Suddenly they both try to escape the room but the door is locked. Gurtz probably locked it. The room is filling up with gas and the try to escape using the window so they jumped out the window onto the pool and escape while Mr. Merson’s house crumbles down. Kristi tells Mr. Merson that she is not your grandchild and that is where the story ends. I think that the type of conflict is person vs fate because she doesn’t know if Mr. Merson is really her grandfather. I think the theme is bravery because it took a lot to handle when Mr. Merson said he thinks that she is his grandchild and when she had to jump off the roof and into the pool to help save Mr. Merson.
The title relates to the book because in the story Kristi repeats, “Who are you?” when she didn’t know who Mr. Merson was. I think that the Kristi motivation is that she wanted to find out if Mr. Merson was really her grandfather and she didn’t want to be. She wanted to be with her real parents. It turns out she told Mr. Merson that she doesn’t belong to her no matter what he believes. The author’s tone is serious and suspenseful. I know this because near the end the author uses short sentences. Not to make you read it faster but to create effect.
I was surprised when Kristi suggested that Alanna Chase could be the one who was trying to kill Mr. Merson. It’s like the most unsuspecting person is the one who has been doing it all. It also surprised me when Mr. Merson believes that Kristi is his grandchild because i thought the file filled with the pictures of Kristi was because he was a private investigator looking for her real parents daughter, it was way off. MY favorite part of the book is when at the ending Kristi says, “I chose to believe Mom and Dad. In my mind there’s no doubt about it. I’m positive. I’m sure. I’m their daughter. I’m Kristin Anne Evans. I am. ” I just thought that was the perfect way to end the book where everything was over.
I would rate this book out of five stars . I would rate this five stars because it is a unique way of telling a story, a guy stalking a girl because he thinks that is his grandchild. I would recommend this book to my friend Hailey because i think she would like suspense books. In conclusion, Kristi Evans survived a person stalking her, jumping off a roof and saving Mr. Merson's life two times.
I always like Joan Lowery Nixon books. The mysteries aren't terribly complicated but they feature young women taking control of their lives and facing problems head on.
It gave me insight into the Art world, and I appreciated the story and its characters for that fact. However, I was very disappointed that the grandfather turned out to be so despicable. Ugh.

In the book, Who Are You? By: Joan Nixon, A man named Douglas Merson is murdered and when the police come to the door of Kristi asking questions, the weird connection between these two is quite intriguing. For this reason, I thought this book had a very interesting story and plot line which really engaged me into the book. I liked the feeling of suspense that was maintained throughout the story, which also helped me stay interested and kept me reading. I would recommend this book to any enthusiasts of suspense, murder, and surprises around each corner.
good thing the incompetent police have a persistent teenage girl to help them figure things out. And wow, the stalking part is not seen as nearly as horrible as it does to a modern reader. Rounded up to three stars because it was very readable.
If you have not read this book than spoiler alert!! My name is Ethan Curb and for my mystery genre in Mr. Woolley's class I chose the book, Who Are You? by Joan Lowery Nixon. Who Are You? starts off when Kristin Evans and her parents are interviewed by homicide detectives, Sergeant Balker, and Sergeant Nims. The detectives talk to Kristi about a shooting of a man named, Douglas Merson. They went to Kristi because after an investigation of Mr. Merson's house they found a folder of clippings of pictures of Kristi and wanted to see if Kristi knew him. Kristi and her family were suddenly frightened of this Mr. Merson so Kristi visited him with her friend Lindy at the hospital to get answers. They found Merson unable to talk so they left but in the next couple of days Kristi could not stand not having those questions unanswered. Kristi went to the hospital only to find him being being suffocated with a pillow. Kristi saved Mr. Merson and was invited to his house the following Sunday. Mr. Merson also received a private nurse and a bodyguard named Gurtz. Kristi came a few days early and found Merson drugged out in his bed with a toxic gas on. Kristi saved Merson again but during her visit found out that he was a forger. Kristi came to the hospital to Mr. Merson to find the truth about the secret folder. Kristi left in disgust after Mr. Merson told her that her true father was his dead son, Roger. Kristi could not bare his words but came back to Mr. Merson after being called one morning by his bodyguard and told that he was out of time and she felt regretful for telling the police about his forgeries. She came there to find mr. Merson in his bed and was soon locked in with the house lit on fire. Once again, she saved Mr. Merson's life and found out the truth about the murderer. The murderers were none other than Landreth, Ms Chases' (friend of Merson) employee, and Gurtz. This book was my first mystery book and it exceeded my expectations. It was a great book and was filled with excitement and because of it mystery is a book genre that I would consider in the future.
Kristi learns about an attempted murder case in the area, although not sure how this involves her family, the police explain the victim has a folder full of articles and photos of Kristi. Now she wonders why this man was stalking her and what he wants. Kristi loves art and longs to learn more about it. While digging into Douglas Merson's life she learns that he too has the talent and appreciation for art. But this still does not answer the question what Mr. Merson's interest in Kristi was.
This reminds me so much of one of the books I would had read in middle school. At the time I was reading R.L. Stine and Christopher Pike galore when mysteries and murder were all the rage for young adult readers. I found this story to be alright. I was not overly impressed, but actually my first thought was Mr. Merson was a creep or pedophile. He was not, but as an adult reading this, that was the first thing that came to mind.
Kristi was a likable enough character. I loved her drive to solve the mystery, although I found myself annoyed at her constantly putting herself in danger. Another thing to keep in mind was this book was written in the 90s. There is really not much room for character building being the book is rather short. If you enjoy mysteries or even love art, this would be an enjoyable book, it was just not one of my favorites.
a young girl name Kristi get a visite from the cops after a person name Douglas Merson gets shot and he keep a file on her, after she found out she has been dying to know why he kept a file on her. Over time she gets more clues on things that helps her understand how she might have fit in. When she want to visit him in the hospital, he gave her a drawing of her mother that his son Rogar gave him. After thinking over and over and putting the peices together and getting a phone call having to go to Mr. Merson place before school, she finally figured out who was trying to kill Mr. Merson, He told her that he was her grandfather, and his son was her real father. Her mother got his son sperm from the Women's place but her mother's husband name was put on the birth ticket. But she believe her parents and she won't to forget all this every happened.
Joan Lowery Nixon writes about teenage girls getting involved in mysteries and "Who Are You" is no exception. Her writing style is clear and straightforward. It's refreshing to read something so concise when other authors get bogged down with meaningless description.
This story was interesting and I liked Kristi's curiosity to find out the truth about the man who has a file of pictures about her. However, I prefer JLN's works that deal with an actual murder (rather than attempted murder) as it adds more excitement to the plot.
Not my favorite of her books, but it was still enjoyable.
This book is about the girl who was followed by the man that she doesn't know him and when he was shot by someone then she know the new thing that he took her photo so she started to find the truth why he took her photo. It's not too hard for the person who start to read an English book like me because author doesn't use the hard word. And it also the interesting book because the girl in this book will find a lot of dangerous situation when she found the truth.
i thought i was a perfect book just for me. Because when police detectives tel kristi evans and her parents that a man named Douglas Merson was killed in his home from being shot that did`nt mean anything to them well to know the rest you MUST READ THIS BOOK!!!!!!!
This book wasn't one of my favourite Joan Lowery Nixon mysteries. While I liked Kristi's character, the whole book centered around art/art history and it just wasn't interesting to me. Art appreciation has never been my thing so I didn't fully invest in this novel.
I thought this was an ok book, but it seemed like a middle school level book. It was too simple for the kind of books I usually like to read. I recommend this book to middle school or upper elementary students.
