Jimmy Burns was born in Madrid in 1953. His father the late Tom Burns met his mother Mabel Maranon while working in the British embassy in Madrid during the Second World War. Jimmy contributes Spanish language media outlets and publishes his books in Spanish translation as Jimmy Burns Maranon. His childhood was spent straddling cultures -Britain, Castille, and Catalonia. He went to school at a British school in Madrid, then a preparatory school in London before studying for his O and A-levels at the Jesuit Stonyhurst College in Lancashire. He took a BA honours degree in Latin American & Iberian Studies at University College, London and an MA in the politics and government of Latin America at the Institute of Latin American Studies in London and The London School of Economics and Political Science. On leaving university, he spent two years teaching English to foreign students, and travelling, gaining experience as a free-lance journalist writing about Latin America and Spain. His early published work included articles for the Catholic Herald and The Tablet. During the 1970's he was commissioned by the BBC to write the script for an Everyman documentary on the Brazilian Archbishop, Helder Camara. He also worked as a researcher for Yorkshire TV, contributing to a critically acclaimed film presented by Robert Kee on the death of Franco and Spain's transition to democracy.
In 1977 Jimmy joined the Financial Times and was posted to Portugal as Lisbon correspondent, reporting also on Spain. He also became a regular contributor to the London Observer, The Christian Science Monitor, and The Economist, as well as the BBC, Australian Broadcasting Corporation, and Radio Nederlands. From 1980-2 he worked for the Financial Times' international desk based in London before being posted to Buenos Aires, as the newspaper's southern cone correspondent.
He arrived in Buenos Aires in the middle of a military palace coup and three months before the invasion of the Falkland Islands by the Argentine armed forces sparked off a three-month war with Britain. He was the only full-time British foreign correspondent to remain in Argentina prior to, during, and well beyond the conflict, covering the country's transition to democracy, as well as political developments in Chile, Uruguay, and Paraguay. He continued to regularly contribute articles on Latin America to other media outlets in the UK, Europe, and the US.
In mid-1986 he returned to London to work at the Financial Times and prove himself as an author. Advised by his agent Caroline Dawnay, he agreed to be signed up by Liz Calder and Nigel Newton as one of the first authors of the most innovative independent publishing houses to emerge from the 1980's, Bloomsbury, with his book, on Argentina and the Falklands War, The Land that lost its Heroes. It won the 1988 Somerset Maugham Award for non-fiction. He followed this up with Beyond the Silver River: South American encounters, based on a collection of personal diaries he kept while living and travelling in South America. In the mid 1990's he was encouraged by David Reynolds and Penny Phillips, then editors at Bloomsbury to write the first full-length biography of Diego Maradona, and subsequently a history of FC Barcelona and the Catalan people. Together with writers like Nick Hornby, Simon Kuper, and Peter Davies, he was praised by the critics for breaking new boundaries in football writing. In between, he was commissioned by John Murray, another independent publisher at the time, to compile and write Spain: A Literary Companion. Cuốn sách đầu tiên của năm 2020
Cuốn tiểu sử song hành nói về hai quái nhân trong thế giới túc cầu mà đến cả người không xem đá bóng cũng biết tới: Cristiano Ronaldo và Lionel Messi. Thế nhưng nếu mà chỉ nói về khía cạnh chuyên môn khokng thôi thì cuốn “Ronaldo và Messi: Đại chiến Titan” đã làm tròn vai rồi.
Ở cuốn này, người đọc sẽ được đi ngược về những gốc rễ của chính hai con người này, từ khi chập chững chào đời cho tới khi đạp lên đời để đứng tận chót vót đỉnh vinh quang. Chúng ta sẽ đi qua gia cảnh cá nhân, thời thế chính trị của từng đất nước có vai trò gì hình thành nên những tính cách mà chỉ những nhà vô địch mới có, hay nghịch cảnh đã tôi luyện những tính cách nhà vô địch đó như thế nào để hai nhà vô địch này trở thành cặp đôi vô địch vĩ đại nhất mọi thời đại.
Trùng hợp thay, mình đọc cuốn này cùng lúc ông thầy trên trường bắt đọc cuốn “Từ Tốt đến Vĩ Đại” của Jim Collins nói về cách các nhà lãnh đạo đưa các công ty tầm thường trở nên vĩ đại. Nhờ đó mới thấy được một số thứ mà trước giờ vẫn tưởng thế. Ví dụ như mọi người vẫn mặc định Messi là không có tố chất lãnh đạo vì tính cách rụt rè và không giỏi uý lạo tinh thần đồng đội. Thế nhưng, chính Messi lại sở hữu tố chất của một Lãnh Đạo cấp 5, cấp độ cao nhất, nếu chiếu theo những gì cuốn “Từ Tốt đến Vĩ Đại” cung cấp. Đó là tinh thần không bỏ cuộc + tính cách khiêm nhường, và Ronaldo lại chỉ sở hữu có một.
Cuốn sách không được sáng tạo nhằm mục đích đưa ra kết luận ai vĩ đại hơn ai vì cái này nó thuộc về góc nhìn. Sách chỉ đưa ra những tư liệu, dữ kiện để cho chúng ta thấy, để được vĩ đại như vậy hai cậu nhóc ôm trong mình một niềm đam mê bất tận với trái bóng đã phải trải qua những gì. Chưa kể đến cái “duyên” đưa đẩy hai số phận sinh cùng thời để rồi trở thành kình địch thúc đẩy nhau phát triển không điểm dừng, từ khía cạnh chuyên môn đá banh cho tới khía cạnh người phàm dứt bỏ những giới hạn để thành quái-nhân.
Nói tới đây mới nhớ, với mình, cuốn sách này đích thị là “Hai Số Phận” phiên bản đá bóng chứ không chệch đi đâu được luôn. Messi chính là Kane, sinh ra với khả năng thiên phú thông minh trong lĩnh vực của mình và nhờ nó vươn tới đỉnh cao. Ronaldo chính là Abel, vượt khó vượt chông gai để mài giũa gọt đẽo mình rồi trở thành phiên bản tốt nhất của mình. Rồi cái “duyên” đưa Cr7 đến Real đối đầu với Barca của Messi tạo nên những năm tháng rực rỡ nhất trong sự nghiệp của cả hai, thế có khác gì Kane và Abel đụng nhau trong thương trường rồi đấu nhau choang choác để rồi ai cũng giàu nứt đố đổ vách không.

Probably a book for the fans. Because it is a long and winding story cut into pieces collated alternatively one than another. Boring and with insignificant details. Messi has a growth problem. He needs artificial growth hormone. But to dedicate so many pages on this simple fact? Please.

No rivalry has gripped the football world more than the one played out when Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo were the figureheads of Barcelona and Real Madrid, the world's two most iconic clubs.
Jimmy Burns, the biographer who enraged Diego Maradona with the warts-and-all Hand of God, examines their personal duel in detail and asks if either can rival El Diego, Alfredo di Stefano and Pele for the lofty title of football's greatest ever player.
The book's concept doesn't really work initially as it feels like you are reading two separate biographies as it charts the rise of both players and their rise to stardom at Barca and Manchester United.
I'm firmly in the Messi camp when it comes to picking who is the greatest player in this particular rivalry, so I've read many books and watched a few documentaries about his hugely impressive career.
Consequently, there's little on this book that was new to me, save the insights into Messi's occasional strops and the tax evasion that landed him in trouble with the Spanish authorities.
But I found the chapters on Ronaldo's rise from poverty in Madeira to superstardom both informative and entertaining. I've always found Ronaldo's rampant narcissism difficult to stomach but it's hard not to admire the drive and belief that took him to the top.
Burns helps explain why Ronaldo has turned into an icon for the social media age, his ego and pursuit of physical perfection suiting a society that places a higher value on image than ability.
Yet I'm convinced history will judge Messi more kindly, his humility making him the perfect talisman for a Barca team moulded by Pep Guardiola into one of the greatest we have ever seen.
It's when Real Madrid turn to Ronaldo to stop the might of Messi's Barcelona that the stories of these superstars intermesh and Burns' concept finally comes together.
Throw Jose Mourinho into the mix and the tale becomes even more fascinating, his Machiavellian scheming adding a dollop of darkness to the narrative.
Yet Ronaldo ends up feeling smothered by his manager's pragmatism at time, his ego unable to cope with having to resort to underhand tactics to best Messi.
That in essence sums up the book and their rivalry, with Ronaldo struggling to cope with the fact that no matter how hard he tries, the little man from Argentina is destined to tower above him for all eternity.

Ако не беше огромната пристрастност на автора към една от двете легенди, книгата можеше да се превърне в шедьовър в своята област. С изключение на първите глави, описващи детството на двамата, от всяка друга лъха пристрастието на автора. Прави впечатление бе особено сполучливия превод у редакция на български. Явно правен от човек далеч от футбола, той е изпъстрен с куп грешки. Няма как иначе да си обясним, че победата на един отбор нееднократно е описвана като поражение, бъркането на футболни отбори и т.н. Въпреки това си заслужава книгата да се прочете. При паралелното следване на живота на тези две легенди се вижда през колко идентични перипетии и трудности са минали, за да станат толкова велики.

Having watched most of the classico matches described in the book, I could identify with the players and the emotions. I still think Messi is the better of the two.

Brilliant insight into how the live and career of Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi developer from scratch.
Jimmy Burns writing style makes this juxtaposition look both comprehensive and snappy at the same time.

The first part of the book bored me – I was really struggling to continue it, but I have read enough biographies to know how difficult it is to write them. The second half of the book captured me completely, hence the four stars. In the Jimmy Burns made me curious what was going to happen next, even though I knew was going to happen. I recommend this book for anyone who loves football.

Cách mà tác giả Jimmy Burns khai thác về từng câu chuyện song hành của hai cầu thủ vĩ đại nhất hành tinh khiến cho mình - một đứa mù và không thích bóng đá - cũng phải đọc ngấu nghiến không muốn dừng lại. Đúng là cách kể chuyện kiểu này thu hút mình vô cùng kể từ sau khi đọc Hai số phận và Nửa kia của Hitler của Eric Emmanuel Schmitt. Và tác giả của cuốn sách - Jimmy Burns đã kết luận một điều mà mình vô cùng tâm đắc: "Làm sao có thể tranh luận xem ai là cầu thủ hay nhất thế giới nếu chúng ta không nhìn vào khía cạnh con người của họ."
Nếu bạn thích đọc những cuốn sách thể loại dòng chảy cuộc đời hay tự truyện, hồi kí như mình thì sẽ thấy vô cùng thích thú vì khi đọc thể loại này mình học được rất nhiều điều mà trường học không dạy. Điều này nghe thật vô lý phải không? Ban đầu mình cũng nghĩ như vậy nghe được hơn 2 người anh đáng tin cậy chia sẻ về cuốn tự truyện Mike Tyson - Sự Thật Trần Trụi (cũng được anh Trần Minh dịch) - rằng đây là cuốn sách "self-help" dữ dội và trần trụi nhất,... mà mọi người rất rất nên đọc.
Cristiano & Leo: Khổ luyện và thiên tài - cuốn sách đầu tiên mình đọc và hoàn thành mở hàng cho Một năm ��ọc sách: 20+20 cuốn sách muốn đọc. Hên là nó hay và bơm thêm được động lực để mình đọc tiếp những cuốn sách tiếp theo. Sau khi đọc cuốn này, mình bắt đầu thấy hứng thú hơn và có thể sẽ tìm đọc thêm vài cuốn về những cầu thủ bóng đá khác như Zinedine Zidane và Neymar.

Nếu bạn thích đọc những cuốn sách thể loại dòng chảy cuộc đời hay tự truyện, hồi kí như mình thì sẽ thấy vô cùng thích thú vì khi đọc thể loại này mình học được rất nhiều điều mà trường học không dạy. Điều này nghe thật vô lý phải không? Ban đầu mình cũng nghĩ như vậy nghe được hơn 2 người anh đáng tin cậy chia sẻ về cuốn tự truyện Mike Tyson - Sự Thật Trần Trụi (cũng được anh Trần Minh dịch) - rằng đây là cuốn sách "self-help" dữ dội và trần trụi nhất,... mà mọi người rất rất nên đọc.

Hên là nó hay và bơm thêm được động lực để mình đọc tiếp những cuốn sách tiếp theo. Sau khi đọc cuốn này, mình bắt đầu thấy hứng thú hơn và có thể sẽ tìm đọc thêm vài cuốn về những cầu thủ bóng đá khác như Zinedine Zidane và Neymar.
