Torn Asunder by Michael Todd and narrated by Emily Beresford is absolutely fabulous! It has a gal that gets kidnapped and used in a ceremony to host a demon. A group of people arrive seconds too late to rescue her from insertion but they do get her. They take her to their base. She is now considered "damned" . Her family will think she is dead. She will train to protect others from having the same thing happen to them. The group that rescued her are all "damned" also.
Her demon is a succubus. A very powerful and ancient demon too. Although our gal knows she is a demon, they share a body and if the body dies then they both die. Her demon, which she calls Pandora, is very helpful in keeping her alive which makes her quite the supergirl at times!
This has such great action, awesome characters, exciting situations, unpredictable circumstances, plenty of great dialogue, humor, and lots of emotion between characters.
The narration was terrific too!

Not for me

I just couldn't get into this book.
The characters didn't seem real at all.
The MC takes being possessed and losing her old life with barely a shrug.
The fights weren't any good either. Over with quick with little detail, and for some reason it kept switching from sword to knife without her having to always draw a knife.
This felt really rushed and could be gone over again to flush out the characters, breath some life into them.
Also go back and fix the fights, and the dialogue between the demon and the MC. As is it comes off as to buddy buddy for it to be even a bit believable.
I can't recommend this book.

Great concept, had some decent dialogue at times, but overall, execution was mediocre. Scene jumps were abrupt, and the story didn't flow well. It felt at times like multiple authors were trading off scenes or chapters and cobbling together the results. As much as I enjoyed the concept, I doubt I'll read anymore of the this series.

A great adventure

I’m not sure about the cover for this one, I suppose it’s superhero motivated although that is not the essence of the tale.

Katie becomes increasingly rounded out throughout this novel giving her a good deal of depth and personality. Katie definitely grows with the novel, together with her new friends the book gathers some amount of complexity. Although this book seems to lag at points, altogether it’s a good tale.

The world building gives a lot of atmosphere wkthout losing credibility and all up I’m looking forward to the next novel.

Todd [perhaps better known under his Michael Anderle name, for the Kurtherian Gambit series] could learn a lot from Debra Dunbar. Both in establishing your Satanic presence, which here comes over as little beyond a slightly more foul-mouthed version of Paris Hilton, and then in creating a credible threat for your protagonist. Instead, it plays a bit like an entry-level tutorial for a video-game, and certainly falls rather short of the “Supernatural Action Adventure Opera” touted in the book’s sub-title.

Notes for me

This is a paranormal. Not classified as Paranomal Romance.

So NO romance here.
If you are looking for one, move along.

But if you are up for bromance and teamwork, well then, this one is for you.

Katie has 2 souls trapped into 1 body.
One demon and one human. She is a newbie in the new world. Adapting meant new rules, new place and as well as leaving her old life.

Lot's of asskicking, killing, action packed filled pages.

I am entertained.

Reread list - Yes

Well, I am used to Michael Todd (Anderle) writing style. But Katie is really different from his usual confident heroine or hero, compared to Bethany Anne or Molly our favorite female Damned had to work to become badass and it's still in progress in this book. Her heart is in the right place and she learn to love herself thanks to Pandora who remind me of those girls that look stupid and vain but have surprising depth to them. I will say that the Demon Pandora is also learning with Katie to "care".

I will read the second book and the next after this I want to know how it finish.

If you like books with strong female protagonist, this is it. The book is nothing ground breaking, but it is a solidly fun ride from the beginning to the end. The internal monologue is awesome. If you like sassy demon's this book has it. It's fun watching the MC turn from go average to demon slayer B.A.

how would you handle getting bonded to the most power female demon in existence? Katherine was chosen at random to be the host of a demon summon. Instead of some low level demon, the crown princess of hell makes an appearance (She lost a bet, don't ask). What should be a simple possession and some fun on the Earth Plane doesn't go as planned. Instead of taking over Katherine's body, Crown Princess is forced to share personal space - literally. Katie and her new demon partner Pandora have to work together or they both die. Pandora is one of the 72 most powerful demons in existence. On her home plane, nothing and no one could stand against Pandora, yet on this plane she is vulnerable. Time to train, Pandora can juice up Kaite's body to heal faster, increased strength, reflexes, stamina, yet what she cant do is fight for her. Katie has to learn how to be the baddest ass kicker the damned have ever seen because shit is getting real - really damn fast. Everyone who observes Katie in action can see that the demon juicing her up is stupid powerful. If they find out who Pandora actually is - well things will get messy. Guess she has to keep the little trouble making human alive for now.

Dialog ruins the book

Everything about this book is okay, even good in some places. But the dialog between characters completely ruins the whole book. Everyone feels like they are reading from deeply insightful script at all times. The characters will make these what are supposed to be deeply meaningful statements but are just impossible to take clearly. Furthermore, they have to explain every like bit of what they're feeling or thinking, which almost *never* happens in real conversations, reading between the lines is a normal and good part of conversations. Silence and actions can be so much more powerful than words and this author does not portray that at all.

Finally, depsite the main character being so perfectly put together and this amazing, strong, person (which is an issue in itself because she doesn't really have any flaws) at one point she complains about how men only like big breasts and butts. She seems to have honestly never realized that some men like other things or personalities as well. Then she and the person she's talking to have this "thoughtful" conversation about how that's not the case even though an elementary school student could draw the same conclusions they do.

Dear Michael,
You are such a tease. Of course, I will write a review for you. I don't know why you ask since you are the Superstar of the Fantasy/Sci-Fi genre. It is so nice of you to get back to your own stories. I have missed the whit and kick ass ladies you love to write about. I know you have other responsibilities, but there is nothing like your own words.
Thank You,
VGH

Ok, I'm just being a little sarcastic. You know that feeling you get when you come to the end of a book. Your stomach contracts, your heart stops for a moment, and your brain screams "NO". That's what happens when you read a really good book. I've always loved the laughter, twists and wonderful characters you bring to life. Please don't ever stop, and I will review each and every one. Once again I say, Well Done!!

Wondering why I put off starting this series...

This wasn't what I expected so was pleasantly surprised when I finally got to it. Dumb of me...after all it is a MA book collaboration!
So as my per usual I will speak here not to readers but to the authors! I'm weird like that.....maybe too much time spent in Oricierian with a certain troll....or maybe to much interaction with Tabitha, (you know the books, the email and on fb) who I think would love Katie! So being caught up including today's new release in both universes here I am. (Heather....clapping, whistling and cheering) the amazing authors who deserve every bit of praise for all the hard work and effort they give to us all. I'm so excited to get on to the next book! Please both of you keep writing cause I for one don't want to miss a single story you have to share!

I'll go 3.5 on this book. I would say 3 or even less but I'll give Michael Todd (Anderle) the benefit of the doubt just because I love his Kurtherian Gambit series so much. I guess I'm just so used to the intense and vibrant depth of B. A. in his Kurtherian series that the main character in Torn Asunder is really flat and 1 dimensional. After 21 books of B. A., I guess I was just hoping for something of that same caliber to fill in the void as the Kurtherian Endgame timeline winds down. This didn't come close. I'm not sure if I will go on to the second book yet or not. Who am I kidding, I know I probably will. I just hope that book 2 picks up the slack and brings the game back to where it needs to be.

I feel like everything just went TOO easy for Katie. She abducted, possessed by a demon, saved by professional demon hunters who are all posssessed themselves, and joins them with little more than a shrug of her shoulders. I can't help thinking anyone confront with all that so quickly would react a little more strongly, and take much longer to accept it all.

Everything they have to do is built up as horribly difficult and dangerous, but then is done with little effort or hassle. Yeah, one member died, but the whole team is then "Yeah, that sucks. Hey, who wants a beer?"

While it was interesting enough to keep me reading all the way through, it was more of "not a total waste of time" than "wow, I can't wait to read the next one!"

This book moves way too fast. There is no time to connect to anyone.
All the time that the reader should have to get to know the cast is literally time-skipped.
The cast has cheese and clichée goodie-two-shoes world views, and everything is very transparently set up to repeatedly show us how "good" the MC is in various fabricated situations. It's all very naive and black and white. I'm sure there will be betrayals and the practices of the organization will turn out to be very questionable, maybe even outright evil. But the MC will always be the righteous one, doing the right thing and it will work out no matter how naive her actions end up being.
I guess you could summarize it all with the word "shallow".

Torn Asunder

Interesting concept. from various and sundry team members of the KGU arena, a new 'combat team'. Demon Hunters that in turn are Already possessed by Demons. They fight day and night to protect regular humans from the demons lurking in this realm. Katie: College hard core volleyball player who now finds herself possessed by a Demon during a summoning gone wrong. A Centuries old demon who Might be one of the top tier demons from hell. And Katie's speech at the Memorial. OMFG. Cue: Hell's Bells, Immigrants' Song, Crossroads AND Down to the Bottom by Dorothy. IF you do NOT get goosebumps on your arms....You are Dead, and just need to be thrown in a Coffin.

First time reading this kinda stuff from this author.... I thought this first book was a little too blase and way too calm about everything. There's no processing time, people are just all magically fine with their lot in life.
That said, I continued with the series, and am extremely glad I did - I don't know why the first book was portrayed the way it is, but the rest of the series actually show human emotion over everything. It made me realize that this first book was maybe just that - the first book in this genre for this author. All I can say is that it quickly loses that "new" feeling and becomes a series that you just can't put down.

Premise of the story has potential. Not a great book, but not bad either.
First, the bad points: I'd prefer it if the fights were a bit more drawn out to have some tension. Everything happens so quickly. Also, at every opportunity in the dialogs, the reader is reminded how great and caring the team are for one another. It might be ok once or twice, but it quickly becomes hackneyed.
Oon the plus side, the premise of the story sounds quite good. I also suspect, or hope, that there is a bigger overarching story line that will develop through the series. I'll persevere and read the next one to see what develops.

Oh, you came for a story? Check back next issue.

This book is put together like the author started writing one day and stopped when he hit his desired page count, regardless of whether there was any structure to what he was writing.
Oh, and did you come for heroism? Don't look for heroism here, the protagonist is a girl, and she's automatically better and stronger and than all the boys and never has any problems unless they're funny or emotional.
They dragged this one out of the slush pile reject bin. Props for trying, but this isn't worth reading.

Funny Pandy!

Solid 5 star rating!
I love the storyline...who wouldn't, Demon possessed protecting???
This new series is very different from the authors other novels but oh so good. The characters grab your attention right from the start. AND...The best part is Pandora otherwise called Pandy, funny as hell and twisted in such a deliciously captivating way.
I am very much interested and waiting on the next one to get here.

Has potential but does not push the envelope. This is also probably why I am not caught up with TKG, despite liking the earlier books quite a bit.

Let's see some real consequences of the demon-linking eh?

Also, gun stuff: No reasonably experienced shooter would prefer the .38 special in today's environment. And Glocks don't have external hammers that you can cock, which impliedly occurs here.

I guess it would be far to say that this book is not really that bad. It would also be fair to say that it is not really that good as well. It is another of those books that is primarily written by some author but with Michael Anderle added as “co-author”. I really do not understand why he is putting his name on this many books by other authors? He is really diluting his own brand name. Needless to say this book is miles away from the ones Michael has been authoring himself.

As I said, it is not bad but it also never rises above being rather mediocre. It follows a pretty standard formula but it makes the mistake, from my point of view, of going to far into the sexy chick with romantic aspirations thirteen on a dozen type of story. Romantic aspiration of course meaning primarily exchange of bodily fluids.

Things like “In front of her were a dozen hand-stitched, expensive, and sexy-as-hell lingerie bras.” are things that I really do not need in my Urban fantasy books.

Apart from that the story is not all bad but the universe building is rather superficial. Actually most of the book is fairly … simple. Our heroin is pretty much thrown into this books version of the supernatural world, some quick training and wham, she is a super demon slayer.

Okay, okay she gets plenty of help from her “inner daemon” but still. The story could have been a bit more developed. The book earns a few points for originality though. I am sure there are plenty of possession stories out there but this one felt fairly fresh and both the daemon herself and Katie’s interaction with it added to the entertainment value of the book.

I think I will read at least one more book in the series before I decide whether to drop it or not.

The Dynamic Duo

Katie a trusting college student is kidnapped and finds her body a host for a powerful demon. The story is good and pulled me in keeping my interest until the end. I like the action and humor. Katie is a compelling, strong character who is made stronger by her demon. It is interesting to watch Katie develop as she morphs from a feisty young lady into a kickass demon hunter. I look forward to the next book.

Holy Snapping Synapses

A plethora of bad guys (demons) to hiss at and enjoy the demise of. A heroine and a team of other badasses to cheer on and laugh and cry with. A well-crafted story that kept me turning pages to see what was going to happen next. This is a winning author collaboration (I'm not quite sure why only one author's name is on the cover) that I will definitely be following. Enjoy.

Bumpy beginning but good read

I really enjoyed this first book in “The Author’s “ new adventure series. I took issue with Katie’s start in this book. Her character arc progressed but I found it difficult to believe a college student would not be a little more hysterical when finding out she is now possessed by a demon. That being said is The Author’s wife the inspiration for finer lingerie or was that Laurie’s contribution?

Oh, another strong read from Michael

Many, many similarities to his earlier work, but with enough differences in style, scope, scenario, etc, to make it an enjoyable change. The characters are engaging, the story moves along well, it creates a sense of interest where you want to know what happens next, what is going to change, etc.
Thoroughly enjoyed this book, heading straight to Amazon for the next in the series.

I don’t usually like possession stories, but this one seemed like it might be fun, unfortunately the first half of the book wasn’t. The sex obsessed Demon possessing Katie had the intellect and wit of a dead frog and Katie wasn’t a great deal better.

The story did improve, although it felt a bit ‘wooden’ at times. By the end of the book I might have given three stars, but for the ridiculous fascination with lace underwear.

Wow...just Wow!

You know it's going to be a great series when you are totally peeved that you have to wait for the story to continue. You did it again Michael! I'll be crossing off days on my calendar in anticipation. I absolutely love the snarky and witty banter. You are a master.

Interesting read and has a lot of potential

I really liked Katie and pandora and their relationship has a lot of potential to change the world they live in.

I am interested in more of the story and I definitely liked it better than the Kurtherian gambit series.

Looking forward to the next one.

Great first story in this series

I love Michaels Kurthian books and his main character BA! This new series looks to be just as good and entertaining as that. I liked Katy’s moxie and her ability to get used to this new reality she got stuck with. Looking forward to the next book which I have already bought so bye I am off to read that one!
