The evil genius Dr. Eggman has been foiled—but the work of Sonic the Hedgehog isn't over yet! In the aftermath of the latest epic battle, rogue robots continue to attack small villages around the world. In order to succeed, Sonic will need the help of his friends Tails, Knuckles, and Amy, along with some new and surprising allies. This new collection from acclaimed writer Ian Flynn features the blue blur like you've never seen him before. Gotta go fast!
I'm not the demographic target for these books, but as a huge fan of the early games, and seeing how neat the art was, I had to pick it up and give it a try, wasn't disappointed, this is a good light fun read with plenty of characters and small story arcs, give it a shot.
IDW po mnoha letech získali práva na Sonica od Archie Comics a rozhodli se udělat restart, který respektuje videoherní kontinuitu a odehrává se po Sonic Forces.
První čtyři sešity letmo načrtávají svět a postavy.

IDW's Sonic ongoing launches right off the back of the end of Sonic Forces; Eggman has been defeated, and the world is slowly being put to rights again by the Restoration. But of course, all is not as it appears as a new foe makes themselves known who looks mysteriously like Eggman himself.
It's been a long time since I've read Sonic's comic adventures. I used to read the UK Sonic The Comic for a while when I was younger, but this is my first foray into the US stuff, and it's...really good? It manages to straddle the line of being an all-ages book without pandering to younger readers, and it deals with some pretty heavy ideas at times. The second volume especially has some pretty dark moral quandries for Sonic and friends to navigate, but that's all balanced out nicely by Sonic's carefree attitude and the sheer fun of seeing him beat the crap out of bad guys.
All your favourite characters show up here eventually too; it feels a bit like an old Marvel comic where each issue has a new guest star, but they all bring something new to the story and feel relevant rather than just forced - the Chaotix help Sonic investigate Eggman, while Silver and Blaze have input from the future/alternate dimensions to add, for example, while Sonic and Shadow fighting each other never gets old. It all culminates in a big throwdown featuring everyone versus the true villain of the story with the fate of Angel Island and the Master Emerald in the balance, and I just love typing sentences like that.
The new additions to Sonic lore are great too - Tangle and Whisper fit nicely into the group without feeling derivative of any other hero, while Rough & Tumble and Doctor Starline flesh out the villain camp quite nicely. Starline especially is one to watch, I think.
The art goes through a few changes, but I'm pretty sure most of these artist are familiar with Sonic's world, as is writer Ian Flynn who I believe follows Sonic across from his previous rights owners, Archie Comics. The art is always bright and colourful, but the subtle differences between artists gives each issue its own unique feeling without being too tonally dissonant.
I'm glad I dove into Sonic's world once again; there's something comforting about this series, and yet it doesn't shy away from building and building as it goes. Now all I need is to get City Escape out of my head and we'll be good.
Due to a sad realization I had about the Sonic series as of 2021 with bad writing and having writers that decided to use Wikipedia for their research on Sonic, I was hoping to at least read something that feels like a person cares about all the Sonic characters. I found everything I was looking for and so much more! The artistry was incredible in this comic along with Ian Flynn’s amazing writing as it always is and the story that takes place is too good for me to stop reading. Sonic’s interaction with each and every character is so accurate to the games and even builds on new ways to take the relationship. I am a Sonamy fan for many reasons and the way they interact in this issue is my favorite portrayal of it. Sonic and Tails’ friendship always makes me smile, Sonic and Knuckles are truly becoming friendly rivals that challenge each other, and Sonic has a lot of respect for Blaze as she is not shown for her responsibilities or for the powers that she has enough. Overall, I’m extremely excited to keep going with the series. In the meantime, hopefully someone on Sega and Sonic Team fix the video games they’re releasing right now!
this was a fun read! i’ve always loved sonic the hedgehog’s character, so it was nice to read a comic book about him. his dynamic with tails was so entertaining and i liked being able to see them work together in this story. though the plot was a bit shallow, overall this was still a good, fast-paced comic that i would recommend
This book is super nostalgic to me. I read the Archie Sonic comic series for a VERY long time until I was old enough to have to pay for it myself, then unfortunately had to be cut from my budget. AND I was one of those Deviantart kids that followed chibi-jen-hen So, I was on the floor when I saw her original characters in the background of this book! This was a blast from the past and it was a trip for me.
Anyway, This book was actually really fun, great pacing, solid understanding of the characters, and the art work in each issue was amazing! All the characters felt dynamic and art-style flowed really well. I'm wondering if they will include any ARCHIE lore or other characters from that comic series? They mention the resistance and I really hope they include the ARCHIE characters from those issues.
I think this series is really promising and has a lot of potential in future issues! ~Ashley
p.s. I also have had several hedgehogs! I got my first hedgehog, Hannah, in 2nd grade!
3/5 Beautiful art and a fun story. This collects issues 1-4 of IDW's Sonic the Hedgehog (2018). Not much more to say it's 4 short adventures as Sonic teams up with different characters protecting different city's. The art really is excellent.
voilà ce que je fais plutôt que de réviser..... j'étais émue de retrouver Blaze, je l'aimais trop quand j'étais gamine dans Sonic Rush et Sonic aux jeux olympiques (puis plus tard dans Sonic '06)
I say plot, there isn't really much of it. There's a hook that in a tighter series would've been an opening sequence – a first issue at most.
Beyond that, each issue is taken up reintroducing an old friend and then having them and Sonic beat up some badniks.
I'm not one of the Sonic hardcore; this was my first time reading Sonic comics since the old UK mag back in the day, and maybe that means I was spoilt, but... there's so little to this.
Also, being something of a classicist, I'm still not on board with "Eggman" and will die on this Emerald Hill.
I haven’t read or intook anything Sonic related in a while so when I came to this I was probably part of the target audience: people who knew about the franchise but not super deep into it / Casual comics fans.
The artwork is stellar and some of the newer characters introduced I think would be a cool tie in and make me wanna play the games again. Looking forward to finishing this run and seeing where it goes.
thank you to my beautiful, bookworm gf for letting me use her kindle account to read this <33 it sucks how they don’t have all of them on kindle unlimited BUT THIS WAS SO 💙
i love sonic so much. he’s so cocky but also so fricken adorable. he’s just like me fr!!
IT WAS SM FUN TO READ??? like… i enjoyed reading this over marvel comics tbh………..
this was actually surprisingly easy and quick for me to read.. if i had access to all the comics, i’d finish them all in 1-2 days
Light reading with some great art. No surprise, there's not some incredible story happening here, but the characters and action look great, and Tangle is a welcome addition to Sonic's box of sidekicks. This was a nice, nostalgic change of pace.
Really glad to be getting back into the Sonic Comics. I was a huge fan of the Archie run when I was younger. So far I’ve been enjoying the IDW run and I’m excited to read more. :)
Overall, this is a really great comic!! Sonic IDW, as an entire series, is so good that it effectively got me INTO reading comics (I only read manga prior). IDW Sonic is a refreshing, engaging approach to the Sonic series.
One aspect that strikes me about this comic series is its approach and consistency with the characters. While some characters are written as they used to be written in the "good old days," such as Knuckles and Amy, others are taken in interesting directions. For example, without spoiling any of the story beats, one thing the comic tends to grapple with is Sonic's philosophy towards showing mercy to his enemies. Multiple characters point out the flaws in this ideology, and we see the character suffer real-life consequences as a result of his philosophy. It's up to the reader to continue to see where this critique of his philosophy and overall character study of Sonic goes!
And yes, you heard me right: All of this nuance on philosophy and morals takes place in a comic about a blue hedgehog that says, "Gotta go fast." With masterfully crafted stories by Ian Flynn and Evan Stanley, large overarching stories, and beautiful art, this is a must-read for any Sonic fan!!
Good to see IDW doing their best to revive the sonic comic, and with talented people in charge I know it will be amazing. They already used the template of the Forces story and are looking to add more stuff to it, and if the Archie comics are a good point of reference, I know it will only improve with time.
This book was great. With amazing art and a great script. Story was hard to remember through the story but it can keep you very entertained and wanting more in the end.
The new Sonic the Hedgehog series at IDW is strange for both its publishing history and its creative teams. I was a fan of the Archie series (which nearly made it to 300 issues) since I was a kid, and it was bittersweet to see it go and then join a new publisher. Understandably, IDW needed to streamline A LOT: get rid of a ton of characters and make very little new ones. To some extent this succeeds, and to others it’s okay. The weird thing is that they brought the Archie writer, Ian Flynn, back to continue writing Sonic. Additionally, they brought back some more of the Archie team for different issues like Tracy Yardley and Jim Amash. So, it’s hard to think of this series as separate from Archie when they’re using a lot of the same creative people.
This story takes place after a major battle between Sonic and his arch foe, Eggman, who vanished after the fight. We get to see series favorites, Tails, Amy, Knuckles, Blaze, and newcomer Tangle the Lemur. What I appreciate about the story is that Flynn drops us right into it. There aren’t too many flashbacks or cross cuts to other characters. He is playing the storytelling long game while also not explaining or origin story-ing Sonic’s universe because, after nearly 30 years, fans just know it. The characters are fun and enjoyable, even if Sonic’s a sarcastic jerk half the time.
The issues switch between old and new talent for the artwork. Despite the artist rotation, there wasn’t too many artists that stood out for wrong reasons. They each had their own style that works with the series nicely. There’s always a lot of energy with Sonic in both his video games and comics, and most of the artists were able to capture it. Still, aside from furry humanoid creatures, there’s not too much to diversify the comic stands with. The series is fun, and I’m interested in where it goes next, but I’m not exactly eager for the next issue on a month-to-month basis.
Decided to give this comic a try after I realised there is a huge fandom for Sonic, and you know what, I see the appeal! The artstyle is cute; I love the thick lineart. It reminds me of 2000s cartoons.
Usually when I start reading a series from a franchise with previous series I tend to be confused by who is who and what is happening, but this was not the case here. I literally know nothing about Sonic, and I have only seen the recent movie, yet I was able to understand what is going on. This is a problem I usually face when I try to read a comic from Marvel or DC; More often than not, I end up being lost 50% of the time.
Plot wise, I have to say that things are just beginning and I am intrigued where it is going. Multiple character were introduced such as Blaze and Tangle and I hope to see more of them. Their character design is *chef's kiss* beautiful. The action scenes are fun as well; they are so dynamic.
The only thing that bothered me or left me uncomfortable was Amy Rose's character. I don't know how she usually is or how she is usually written, but I did not enjoy her in this volume at all. She was inconsistent, and sometime her expressions did not match what she is saying. It made me uncomfortable. I rushed through the issue with Amy Rose.
In conclusion, this was fun. Good times. I would recommend it for children and young teens, and if you are an adult I would still recommend it. You might feel nostalgic or feel the excitement you felt while playing the sonic game or watching the cartoons as a kid.
I'm a huge Sonic fan since I 1st played Sonic The Hedgehog on the Sega Mega Drive (Sega Genesis if anyone's from North America) Mark II at my after school caretaker's when I was 11 and I'm still into the blue blur from playing various Sonic games on Nintendo like Sonic Rush and Sonic Colours some emulated games on PlayStation and Nintendo platforms watched some Sonic cartoons (mostly Sonic Boom but I just hope I get to watch 90's Sonic shows soon) a live action movie. Some Sonic games aren't that great (ouch)
But the only thing I didn't know about Sonic is that the 1st game was originally released on Sega Mega Drive in NA in June 23 1991... and that is 3 days before I was born
So here's what do I think about the 1st volume Fallout
Shortly set after the events of Sonic Forces (yep - Sonic Forces) where Dr Eggman aka Dr Robotnik has gone missing after his defeat where the remnants of the Badnik army continues to take over the world until Sonic and his friends came to defeat them
While the writing and the plot seems great the IDW exclusive artwork is just amazing. I love it
So wherever you're a classic 90's Sonic gamer or a 2000's Sonic gamer it's actually good
The book assumes readers have some background knowledge. I picked it up to read with my son because he likes the games, but I felt a little lost as to the backstory and felt it could have used more flashback or explanation to provide readers with what happened before. It felt like the middle of a series, but it’s the first volume.
Not going to give these a star rating as I'm pretty certain the targeted audience is for kids, but I do want to track the ones we own and also log them as we (mostly me) read them together!
The kids are enjoying these and the story and artwork is a lot of fun. I was unaware there were so many different types of Sonic and loved being schooled by the kids while we went through them.
Got this from the Kindle Unlimited and it really brings back my childhood. I was so obsessed with Sonic when I was a kid, I loved the games and the TV shows. It was nice to see these characters back in action and all true to their original personalities.
