The Princeton Review is an education services company providing tutoring, test preparation and admission resources for students. It was founded in 1981. and since that time has worked with over 400 million students.
I read this and studied from this last year, but now that I've taken the GRE General Test and gotten into a graduate program of my choice, I feel that I can give this a proper review. I found this easy to use and read, with helpful answer explanations and enough practice questions to keep me occupied throughout my study period.
I used this book and the accompanying online resources to self-study. I cannot speak to how this book lends itself to private one-on-one tutoring methods, or how The Princeton Review group classes function. However, if you DO use this workbook as your primary source material, then definitely buy it new so you have full access to all online practice tests and resources! You don't want someone else's margin notes or online progress tarnishing your interpretation of the studying material.
One of the most helpful aspects of the online resources were the timed practice tests and the recommended study schedules. Most people take the GRE online, not the paper administered test, so it is good to get used to questions on the screen and using scrap paper for all your work. In addition, the study schedules offered are based on how many weeks you have to study prior to the exam, which I thought was a good approach. I used the 8-week schedule and made it through most of the suggested lessons. Studying a bit of each topic each week is a lot more conducive to information retention than reading the book cover-to-cover.
Overall, the value of this workbook, and subsequent editions like it, is gleaned in the way you use it based on your own goals and your personal study requirements. Many graduate programs no longer require the GRE, but if you do your research and decide the GRE General Test is the right approach for you, then this workbook could be a great way to prepare for the exam. Take notes, review mistakes, make flashcards, highlight definitions, etc. to supplement your reading and get the most out of this product.
I found this to be a useful tool in preparing for the GRE, and if you get this, then I hope it is useful for you too. Good luck.
I’m still utilizing the online exams that this book comes with codes for (a big bonus) and I sit for the GRE on Thursday - so we have yet to see if I’ve truly “cracked it.” Generally speaking I think this was a good prep book, but it definitely tries to give you a tip for every single type of question that could ever possibly occur. I think a student with less study experience might spend so much time memorizing the tips they don’t actually work on the substance or practice - Or maybe if I had several weeks of consecutive full time dedicated studying (like for the Bar Exam) it would be useful. Abundant tips aside, amusingly it assumes users remember a lot of math basics from high school (more than I did anyway). Using this as a study guide has definitely helped me organize prepping for this exam in the middle of a busy career and family life, but I’m not sure it’s a gold standard of test prep.
I am blown away by how unhelpful this book is. When explaining answers it assumes you know things without clarifying. For example, they never say how to do long division and find remainders. I should have bought a different book and not wasted $40 on this crap. Wow.
