Soar!: Build Your Vision from the Ground Up by T.D. Jakes is book that aims to educate and empower readers on how to transform their vision into a reality, using tried and proven methods. This book is sure to be a helpful starter's guide for aspiring entrepreneurs.

The first thing readers must be aware of is the focus of this book. This is not a book that is going to help them discover, develop or write out their life's vision. This book is for those who already have an idea or an understanding of what their vision in life is. Already equipped with a vision, this book will provide valuable information and assistance on how to transform that vision into reality.

Readers who may assume that this book is littered with Bible verses and religious undertone are sure to be in for a shock. This book is focused primarily on practical application with a very minimal spiritual undertone. There are sprinkles of biblical examples, but not many biblical principles are explored throughout when discussing the process of launching a business. This book focuses most on helping readers to get their vision off the ground from a practical perspective and success being sure to follow if they do.

I have to be completely honest, I was surprised by how little God's role was acknowledged during the process of fulfilling our life's vision. Don't get me wrong, I know that we have a responsibility to act and do the work required for our visions to become a reality, but I firmly believe that God must be our guide throughout the process, especially if we desire to achieve true success. I sincerely thought there would be a chapter or at the very least a paragraph acknowledging this vital principle. However, there wasn't.

I appreciate that this book doesn't encourage readers to sit back and wait on God to make their visions a reality, but to own the responsibility of doing the work that is required. For readers who are only interested in the practical steps that must be taken, this book is sure to met their need. For those readers who desire a balanced approach of faith in conjunction with action, this book will likely leave them desiring more. At the very least, that's how it left me feeling.

This book provides great guidance for current and aspiring entrepreneurs. Those who have more experience in the world of entrepreneurship may find this book more as a refresher than a guide. Overall, there is plenty of value that can be received from this book, especially for those who are most interested in practical action steps.

I received this book free from the publisher through their book review bloggers program and I was not required to write a positive review.

"Soar" by Jakes is a book that will inspire you to stop procrastinating the things that you've been dreaming to do all your life and start seeking to do the things on your must to do list. Maybe you have a bucket list or you've been stuck in a career that feels like a dead end, don't waste another minute, get ready to pursue your dream! Soar is a book that is full of wisdom on how we often become drained emotionally, physically, spiritually and financially, but how we can't stay stuck there. God has so much more for us! We must get out and pursue His best for us!! Let's take his vision and plan for our our life and soar to new heights! I liked chapter 12 the most where Jakes talks about excuses and how we often make them, but we need to push past them by making steps. This book has lots of practical wisdom on how to take your business, dreams or career to the next step. Not only do you want to move your life forward, but you want to leave a legacy of faith. Thank you to the publisher for providing a complimentary copy. I give this book 4/5 stars. A favorable review was not required.

I have read several books written by T.D. Jakes. There are some books where he writes from the pulpit as Bishop Jakes and others where he's Entrepreneur Jakes. The Business-side of Jakes wrote "Soar!" as it talks less about the spiritual and more about the practical sides of starting a business, elevating your company and eventually soaring to new heights in your field. I would definitely recommend this book! Jakes writes very powerful, truly insightful advice on his pages as he shares his personal stories - as well as others - of success and failure all in the context of using one metaphor: flying a plane. I don't own a business, but I do work as a Author-Entrepreneur, and what I learned from "Soar!" is how to market, how to know my customers and creating the right business plan (to name a few!). He mentioned the show 'Shark Tank' a few times, which I thought was funny since I am an avid watcher of that NBC program. Jakes provides strategies for success and encourages you to use the connections and resources you already have and to not compare your business success with others. A Great read!!!

I like the principles he was sharing about becoming an entrepreneur and the challenges and fortitude it takes to move forward. However, the stories and analogies overshadow many of the principles. It seems to be very choppy in terms of how he was connecting the concepts. I head T.D. Jakes speak on this book and was very impressed, it may have been the reader because he was reading the words and there may have misplaced emphasis on context. It sounds like rambling, some good points, then more rambling about the Wright brothers, planes, and his mother's work ethic.

Fantastic book on the power of vision with anecdotes from both Jakes own life and the Bible. I found it fascinating that a man of faith had such a positive outlook on capitalism and entrepreneurship.
An extremely life changing perspective and a confidence booster on my ambition of becoming a business leader.

This book was amazinggg!!! I’m not religious, but I respect TD Jakes and his view on life. This book was recommended to me for my photography business.

Soar was very refreshing! This is the best business book I’ve read so far. From learning your market to “its not too late to get started”. Didn’t know he came from a family of hustlers who were that dedicated to becoming successful.

If you are looking for a book that will speak to you mentally, and also lead you in the right direction with your business, then this is it. SOAR, my friends!

To be fair, after a few pages of reading I knew I was not going to be impressed by the book. The writing style is so repetitive, they where times I was like "get to the point already" it really feel like Bishop Jakes rumbles alot.

In my opinion the target market for the book is Black America women, there are various sections where this is very evident. As a black African woman I don't really resonate with those sections and some of the basis of taking up the need to soar, there is a culture barrier in that regard.

Inaddition it seems like he uses bible passage to make his entrepreneurial points. This is because he eisegesis instead of exegesis when it comes to biblical interpretation.

Beyond that there is nothing new being stated in terms of building your business endeavour, only the story of the Wright brothers has been stretched to a length I didn't know was possible.

T.D. Jakes has been a huge source of motivation in my life. Like, huge. What started out as a casual reading or casual viewing of his messages, has now turned into a necessity in my life. He is the spiritual voice that speaks directly to me and interprets The Word in a way that I appreciate, understand, and process with thanksgiving.

I've read a many of his books in the past, and have never been disappointed. I watch his weekly service from The Potter's House in Dallas, Texas and love the way he preaches and his communication style over all.

When his latest book "SOAR!" was released in October of 2017, I made sure to get myself a copy. It is a welcome addition to my e-library (this was officially the 6th book purchase I've made through a Kobo e-reader I've had for about 6 years...I'm still trying to get down with the technology), and something I'll most definitely refer to again in the future.

The premise: being an entrepreneur, but doing it in a way that is in alignment with your spiritual vision. "Build Your Vision from the Ground Up" is the tag line, and it is a helpful tool to any Christian...or anyone starting, maintaining, or running a business.

What I love about Bishop Jakes is that although the book is framed in a spiritual context, the lessons are practical and easy-to-apply to the business process for ANYONE who happens to read this book. I would recommend it to anyone who is starting a business, or thinking about starting a business. I'd suggest that anyone currently running a business also take a look at these words for inspiration and very, very helpful and practical tips.

I trust this advice, because I've witnessed T.D. Jakes transform from a southern man of the church, to an international multi-media mogul. And I haven't seen him compromise himself or his beliefs...not one bit. He understands how to communicate his messages, he has evolved with technology, and adjusted his strategies to complement the current social climate.

I've seen him in tears on a pulpit, bringing congregation members to dance in the aisles of their church in joy and revelation. I've seen him posing in skinny jeans out on the streets of New York. He is as versatile as the business climate, and yet his message is as consistent and truthful as it is full of impact.

Some of my favourite points he raised:

* Catch a vision of your destination!

* While imitating those who have gone before you is crucial to your success, knowing how and when to innovate and blaze your own trail is just as vital!

* If you want to shift from expending energy trying to get off the ground to actually flying as an entrepreneur, then you must identify your motivations!

It's a great read. An informative read. An inspirational read. An easy read. I appreciate the words he has written, spoken, and facilitated, and look forward to his next literary project and/or film...television show, etc. He is the consummate businessman, and a great role model in this context, and many others.

T.D Jakes is probably best known as the charismatic leader of the Potter's House Church in Texas, a fiery preacher and the author of several books (none of which I had read until now). It struck me as something of a surprise that the Bishop is also a seasoned entrepreneur. It is against this backdrop that the book Soar is written.

Soar! is a handbook for launching a business. Although there is reference to the Bible, this is minimal and the book is more practical than theological. In fact, it seems the title is based just as much on Isaiah 40:31 ('...they will soar on wings like eagles) as the story of how the Wright Brothers invented the first flying machine. The latter is referenced throughout the book.

Dividing the book into 4 main sections, Jakes walks readers through all of the stages of starting up a business.

Part 1 is titled 'Expand Your Vision' and consists of 3 chapters.

My takeaway from the first chapter is that the world economy has changed dramtically since the 1980's. Costs are high, incomes are low, jobs are scarce and competition is rife. "What your parents modeled for you was acute wisdom for the era in which they lived. But our day requires untested methods, unexpected mentors and unconventional models."

Chapter 2 is an admonition to research one's environment before starting a business. Jakes encourages the reader, like the Wright brothers did, to examine the current 'winds.' In the modern context these winds are the economic conditions, the place one intends to launch and the cultural context into which they want to operate. Research!

Jakes, in this section, also gives an important summary of what an enterpreneur is: a person who indetifies problems, provides a solution and then scales it.

Section 2 is "Build Your Wings". Included here is advice on drafting a business plan, embracing e-commerce and assembling a team. Key takeways are to be incredibly careful when hiring family and friends!

"Clear The Clouds" is the third section of the book. Here the author notes the importance of coming up with some sort of exit strategy. What are your ultimate plans for the business? Will you sell it? License the technology? Leave it to be run by future generations? These are crucial questions which I had not actually realised are important to ask at the outset.

The final 3 chapters make up the section "Soar To New Heights." This part is slightly more deliberatley motivational than the rest of the book but rounds up the book nicely. Some of the topics Jakes addresses are why an how to market your goods or services.

The author also provides a useful matrix for measuring success: the effort to impact ratio. Impact looks at the results of the energy, emotions and effort used to accomplish the work. The effort to impact ratio is therefore the answer to the question "considering all that I will invest, will the return be commensurate with the energy I will expend?"

In concluding, Jakes encourages the reader to learn and grow and do their very best job to please God through the talents He’s given. Its never too late to start.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I was pleasantly surprised by how practical it was and accordingly accessible to readers of different beliefs. Replete with nuggets of wisdom and personal anecdotes, Soar! is a handy companion for anyone looking to build something.

While I recommend reading this book, these interviews will also help you to get a feel of what this book is about:

I was sorely underwhelmed by this book, no pun intended. Yak yak yak… well, ok, intended. Maybe my disappointment stems from my expectations for the book. I anticipated it to be not solely about entrepreneurship, but also about building a vision for your life and some spiritual tidbits. I am not ready to open my private practice in therapy yet as I am still working on my PhD. Sigh.

Anyway, I found including links in parentheses in text instead of using a reference page or footnotes to be annoying. Overall though, I feel as though the book was filled with a lot of fluff and not much meat. The actual suggestions seemed helpful, but general, and likely could have been condensed into a blog entry. Another thing that sort of stood out to me was when he mentioned consulting Oprah for advice or something and my first thought was: uh… we don’t all know Oprah. LOL. I would have much rather heard about his real personal struggles and specific examples of how he worked through them early on. I did find his chapter “Growing Forward” the most helpful with some nice quotes, I’ll put a favorite below.

"We must understand that our success isn’t a measurement to be compared to the success of others."

Overall this left me pretty disappointed, though I will keep my signed copy so maybe I can refer to it if and when I start my private practice. And I’m so tired of hearing about how millennials don’t work hard and are entitled. I’ve worked my ass off through graduate school to get tuition waivers and have always had side jobs. I’m. So. Tired. of hearing that I just want things handed to me and expect not to work hard. Sure, I know people my age like that, but I know people a lot older than me like that too.

I really enjoyed listening to this book but it was the kind of book that I might purchase as a physical book because there was so much I wanted to remember. There were so many great quotes.

"You see, many new businesses fail not because they weren’t well designed or didn’t have a good business plan but because their owners overlooked the external environment where their products and services would fly. Successful entrepreneurs check the economic, social, and cultural weather before they designed the business, let alone try to fly."

"No matter how much passion, hard work, and dedication you pour into your venture if it doesn’t solve an identifiable problem for the customer is willing to pay for your solution, it will never get off the ground."

I loved that T. D. Jakes had the idea of 'soaring' throughout the book with stories that related to this concept and then to managing a business. Similar to him one of my family's activities was going to the airport to see the planes. He also talks about how the Orville brothers began their business.

It was an uplifting business book.

I read the first quarter of the book, to clarify my ideas, to strengthen my visions and reasons in making a business.
But it wasn't the book for me.
I read common talk about it, but I didn't get any real insight.
For example, the author is describing the importance of a vision, and the power it has, which is good, but there's no insight or exercise about how to make our own vision:
"consider the wind—invisible yet powerful enough to level buildings. Even as it provides lift for planes weighing thousands of pounds, wind has no color, no texture, no visible shape, and no sentient intentionality. As a force of nature, wind is easier to document by its external effects than by its inherent attributes.
Likewise for a person rising from where they are to where they want to be: their ascendancy on the outside must begin with the transcendence of a personal vision for what they can be on the inside."

I saw this book marketed on Dr. Phil and I was intrigued by the title. I was disappointed that the main focus on the book was starting, running, maintaining and succeeding at business, since nothing about business is mentioned on the cover or jacket. However, I continued to read the book and picked up a few interesting concepts and enjoyed some of the short stories relating to T.D. Jake's life and childhood. Overall this book would be great for someone debating starting their own business, or someone who has been toying with the idea for awhile. This book was a great overview for a potential business owner to read. It has many things to consider as well as inspirational stories to encourage your journey.

Conceptually consistent with rich illustrations to help the reader develop a mental picture of their process as an entrepreneur, this book delivers a mixture of both helpful thoughts to ponder as well as some that were a bit too basic to have taken up the space that they did. I suppose that a budding entrepreneur or someone who is mostly looking for an inspirational jumpstart to their vision would benefit most from this book. I think it would have delivered so much better had Jakes embraced his gift for conversation and made the book a bit more practical. (i.e. You're dealing with this struggle? Well, here's what has helped me and what may be the steps in order that you should take.)

TD Jakes books hit every time! This one is now on my favorites list because I am an entrepreneur and this was exactly the type of book I needed to read. What I LOVED about Soar was it being a Christian based perspective and how it gave valuable insight toward how God created us and put our gifts, talents, and business ideas in us for a reason. If you are someone who has been struggling to find your purpose or how to use your gifts for a kingdom purpose TD jakes touches on these topics perfectly. My key takeaway was, everyone has a gift and purpose, and you do not need to do only big and mighty things for you to be living out God's purpose and advancing his kingdom.

TD Jakes recently conducted a business seminar based upon this book at our Church, on a Saturday, which I wasn’t able to attend so I picked up a copy. It’s a fast read and an easy read but chocked full of great information. He notes in his book that he always tries to assure that whenever he does something he wants it to be Informative, Inspirational, and Entertaining. Indeed he hits the mark here and I highly recommend the book, especially if you’re starting a business. He inspired me to read more of his books.

I have not read many T.D.. Jakes books, but the few I have read were very enlightning. This book was the same. We all put things off and never get around to doing them. This book gives insight on why we may procrastinate and gives us thoughts on how to break the cycle of this. I found the book to be very easy to read, and his advice stuck with me after the final page. I for one will be paying more attention to my "flight plan" and I have the author to thank for that. Thanks to NetGalley, the author and the publisher for the ARC of this book in return form my honest reveiw.

A great business book by TD Jake's on the principles of building and running a sustainable business using a powerful metaphor (you have to read the book to appreciate this) to thread the concept and main message of the book.

The book also gives an in depth look at TD Jakes' upbringing and influences into his entrepreneurial spirit and how those shaped him to be a great businessman he is today.

A must read for those looking for practical inspiration and steps to starting and taking their businesses to great heights!

In my opinion, this book was an excellent reference for those who are seeking to make life-changing transitions. Because not only do we learn how to go from imagining the possibilities, but we also learn to initiate the steps to make our dreams a reality.

I've always like to hear the author preach and also enjoyed some of his books, but I was quite surprised by the content of this book. The majority of the book is for someone looking to be an entrepreneur or be a better entrepreneur. There is plenty of real-world advice and strategies that are foundational and update to date for current market conditions. I feel like any aspiring entrepreneur or entrepreneur can gain from this book even though a pastor has written it.
