About the author

Phil Williams is an author of fantasy, horror and dystopian fiction, including the Blood Scouts epic military fantasies, the Ordshaw urban fantasy thrillers and the post-apocalyptic Estalia series. He also works as a fiction editor and writes reference books to help foreign learners master the nuances of English, two of which are regular best-sellers on Kindle. As a long-term teacher and tutor of advanced English, he runs the popular website “English Lessons Brighton”.

Phil lives with his wife by the coast in Sussex, UK, and spends a great deal of time walking his impossibly fluffy dog, Herbert.

Excellent Book for the English language students.
It gives an insight into the writing rules. Cover Academic, Non-fiction, fiction and other genres of writing.

The book is written in a good logical and thoughtful style. I can say this as I am a math teacher. Since the book is well -structured, it is easy to read and understand for non-native speakers like me. Phil Williams considers all phases of advanced writing gradually and in its totality. He writes what you must do and what you should avoid doing while writing. You can find a sufficient number of examples that help you better understand the ideas of the book. I will come back to it again and again as I need time to comprehend all the ideas and recommendations. I would like to especially note the author’s perfect language.

I already read this book once and find it very helpful. The brevity of book is exceptional that is missing in other books that I have been reading. Advanced Writing Skills is a gem of a book for these reasons: clarity, coverage, examples. The succinctness makes the book accessible, especially in an era of short attention span brought about by social media and smart phones. There are numerous writing books but none covers as many topics in as few pages as Advanced Writing Skills. But being brief doesn’t mean it is lacking in rigour. Each topic delves into its subject deep enough to let the reader know the essence and it further encourages the reader to learn the subtleties themselves. A good writing book should provide adequate examples of how the learning could be applied, and this book has them in spades. Often, the nuances of a single point or style are illustrated by several examples. Even if one already has other writing books, Advanced Writing Skills ought to be among them, for it is rare to have a compact book that covers a lot of ground.

I've learnt English as a second language and I wanted to improve my writing skills as well.
So I was looking for a book helping me to achieve my ambition.
'Advanced Writing Skills for Students of English' completely satisfies my needs.
It contains some grammar rules, but it's not a boring textbook, it's very easy to follow.
This book has links to its own chapters and sites and books related to this subject.
I will read it again because I want to pay more attention to details and nuances.
So I recommend it to anyone who wants to improve their writing skills.

Other than providing basic grammar rules, the book goes beyond many other works by offering a detailed guide to a wide range of writing styles, which proved to be practical, accurate, and highly effective.
