Double Trouble #1

Double or Nothing

Rate this book
Rich Cody joined the U.S. Marshals to hunt down bad guys, not babysit witnesses. Orders are orders, though, and now he’s protecting a hacker with ties to the Albanian and Sicilian mobs. It’s just another exciting day in WITSEC. Leotrim Nicolosi was born into a world of crime and bloodshed. When that bloodshed hits too close to home, taking down Leo’s boyfriend—the son of a notorious mob boss—Leo is determined to destroy the Grimaldi family. He’s got evidence that will send every last Grimaldi to prison, he’s got the family’s wealth in an electronic chokehold, and he’s got a vendetta that can only be settled with the blood of the man who killed his lover. When a routine transfer to a safehouse goes horribly wrong, Rich and Leo narrowly escape with their lives. With the Marshals compromised and Leo being framed for murder, he and Rich are on the run from criminals and law enforcement alike. They have no one to trust except each other, and nowhere to go that their enemies can’t reach. And the only way out might mean making a deal with the Devil. This novel is approximately 77,000 words long.

What's even better? Looks like this is the beginning of a series. Well, dear authors, with this ending I seriously hope I'm right, or dealing with the mafia will be a piece of cake compared to me when I don't get more! ;-)

As a side note: sometimes logic fell a bit to the wayside, so it should not be taken too seriously, but the ride was extremely entertaining, so I didn't mind.

Overall, I enjoyed this book. It read like an action flick with elements of angst and romance. By the time the book was over, I liked the MCs a little bit better than in the beginning. I don't know why but I couldn't connect to either Leo or Rich for the first half of the story. Maybe it had to do with too much going on, that I couldn't get a grasp on their personalities. Leo was a bit ambiguous about his revenge. It looked like if his boyfriend wasn't killed, he would have continued with the family. Again, the dead partner trope being not my favorite, made his comparison between the way Rich, the US Marshal, and Tony, the dead mafioso boyfriend, kiss while they were kissing just made me cringe for a moment. I really dislike that!

Rich is a bit too trusting to be a US Marshal. He suffers from PTSD that he hid it from his superiors in order to get the job. So when seemingly boring assignment turns deadly and unpredictable, he is thrown out of balance and battles sever consequences of his own lies. How can he keep a witness alive if he is not at the top of his game? He judged Leo on sight as well which was poor of him. Just like many would, he just didn't want to look beneath the surface to see if there was more to Leo than what's on paper. So I kind of liked him later when he took the time to hear Leo out and actually gave the comfort he needed.

But the book had many good points that made like it more than hate it. Yes, there was plenty tense moments evading the bad guys, the maneuvers they had to take and daring escapes they made were wonderfully written and kept me on the edge of my seat. I loved Smitty! His sense of humor and care he showed Rich when he opened his doors to two men on the run was wonderful. I also liked Kara, no nonsense assistant of Leo's uncle Angelus. She was feisty and a breath of fresh air in the muddled situation both Leo and Rich found themselves in. There is a promise of romance between the men. And while they are still in danger, Leo is ready to see if there may be something more. I will definitely read the second book!

4.5 stars !!!

Bullets flying, bombs exploding, cars chasing and flipping and narrowly escaping. Kidnappings and double crosses. Gah! This is better than an action film.

Half a star missing because I could have used just a tiny bit more romance. But I bet that's coming in book two of this duet which is fortunately published so I can go straight to it.

Quick review until I finish the duology.

1. I had never even heard of this book until last week.

2. I am so glad I saw it on my feed because I ended up L-O-V-I-N-G it.

3. I'm so glad it was free but I would have paid for it.

4. I'm so glad the second book is out already and I'm so glad that it will conclude the story.

Very, very, very good stuff.

I haven’t watched a movie in years but this story was written like a box-office action/suspense hit. Action starts early in the book, continuing regularly and often, up to the last few pages. Rich is a US Marshal on the team protecting Leo, who’s out to take down a mob boss. The attack has them joining forces and on the run. Character building and slow-simmering UST is interspersed with car chases, gun battles and explosions. Chock full of improbable, over-the-top situations, I had a blast reading this. It’s low on steam, making the plot far more believable to me as a romance growing in the midst of chaos. Having the chapters alternate between Rich and Leo was great. I couldn’t tell you which character was written by whom though. The authors have written together before, Risky Behavior series and they mesh quite seamlessly, so now I’ll be anxiously awaiting the second book. Soon I hope!

I liked this one. The pace is fast and the excitement is almost non stop. Both characters are flawed, neither has the perfect plan to stay alive and must cooperate to get out of their predicaments alive.

The book focuses on the beginning of Witsec for Leo and ends before he testifies so there is a lot of shit coming their way. The ending, with so many problems looming for Rich and Leo was unsatisfying after making it through alive. Honestly, I can't see a way these guys are going to be able to make it together which might be why I'm so frustrated. Do the authors see a way? Is there another book coming? If not, I would put this book firmly in the Happy from moment to moment for these guys.

This story hit my sweet spot. Law enforcement official and witness pulling together when the shit hits the fan. There are some possible nitpicks but I don’t care, because I’m a sucker for love on the run stories. From almost the first page you’re free falling into their scramble to figure out who they can trust and get ahead of the hydra attacking them. I was breathless as I was reading much of the second half of the story and wondering when they’d catch a break.

I really liked how Z and Witt handled the reveals of their pasts. The MCs aren’t superheroes, but skilled individuals who work to overcome the baggage their pasts bring. Cari Z and Witt are a great team. I hope they will write more together.

The ending isn’t a cliffhanger, but there’s no doubt that I’ll start reading the sequel as soon it’s released tomorrow.

Trust no one...

US Marshal, Rich Cody, finds his job of babysitting witnesses to be a bore. Delivering them to the safe house usually goes off without a hitch. That is until his team is assigned, Leotrim Nicolosi, a former hacker of the mafia and key witness to finally bringing down the Grimaldi's. However, on Leo's transfer all hell breaks loose and Rich is left to protect his witness. Problem is how was Leo's transfer discovered? The only answer the mafia has infiltrated the Marshals. Not knowing who to trust Rich and Leo go off the grid and into chaos.
This story was action packed and thoroughly entertaining.

An exciting start to a new series! I can't wait to see what Cari Z and Lori Witt has in store for these guys in the next book. Dramatic, smart, sexy, with a lot of bite. You don't want to miss it.

Another great book from an amazing writing duo. I loved the Bad Behavior series and if this is the first installment of another series, I will be anxiously await another story.

I don't know how accurate the WitSec/Marshals procedural stuff is, or whether someone can get around the psych eval given a severe case of PTSD, but given the action/adventure and UST...well, it didn't distract me much. (Having an active Marshal for a Dad, feeding you info & tips, probably helps - but that brings up whole other ethical issues.) Anyway, I liked how Rich's flashbacks, nightmares and anxiety forced him to let Leo help. And not knowing who to trust, who was on the Mob's payroll, what was coming...definitely lent the story an air of tension & danger.

That ending though? OMFG please tell me there's a sequel. I mean, it's a solid ending but there's so much left of this story left to tell. I NEED CLOSURE on the case.

This was great ! Fast paced, lots of action, twists and turns. I really enjoyed this. Rich is assigned as Marshall to Leo who is turning evidence on the Grimaldis. Leo has been wrongly framed and everything has been taken from him. Rich has his own issues, one being hiding his PTSD. From the first moments these two are thrown together. Some great characters in this book that may come back to surface in the next book. It did finish suddenly- I wasn’t prepared for that but I guess another book with these two will be great !

Loved it!
Action. Action. Action. Mafia. Suspense. Ennemies working together...
Everything I love and adore in a romance.
Works every time.

I didn't realize it was the beginning of a series (well at least I hope it is...) but I'm exciting about what's next now!!!

I'm going to review this two as a whole book because these are more like a big book split in two than two separate stories. Well, this wasn't for me after all. I should have suspected it because I don't have a good track record with L. A. Witt and once I started I knew this has the potential to be a complete mess, but I was amused at first. Then the telefilm vibe, the plot holes, the insta everything and the over the top situations got the best of me and I ended up bored out of my mind. Not for me after all.

”I’m scared too, okay? I’m scared shitless. But we have to just go in and get the job done. We can think about being scared later.”
“So, if we don’t die, we can stop and be scared later?”
“Basically.”
“That’s not much of an incentive not to die.”

What a fleet-footed, action-packed, and adrenaline-rush drama this book is! But first thing first. I thought this book was gonna be a standalone, so imagine my surprise (and glee) when it turns out Rich and Leo are going to have a sequel. So, yays to that. Wait until you find out what this guys had went through, though. “Double or Nothing” is a new collaboration between L.A. Witt and Cari Z. after the success of “Bad Behavior”series. If you’ve read that series and remember the angst, pain, turmoil, and blood the MCs shed throughout the story, you’ve certainly been prepared for this.

Double or Nothing” started up on a seemingly opening pages. Don’t let that fool you though, it was practically the calm before the storm because as soon as Rich and Leo clapped eyes on each other, the story took off at a run - in every sense of the word. As I’ve come to expect from these duo, Z-Witt (that’s a cool nickname, eh :p) didn’t pull any punches. Frankly, reading Rich and Leo’s adventure triggered helpless distrust to all and any characters in the book - all the more when the characters in question were not exactly kosher civilian themselves - and exhausted as if I joined in their running all over across the states.

Despite thinking some elements of the book as quite obvious (and I’m surprised the guys didn’t guess it already) I was much entertained by this book. The alternate POVs between Rich and Leo spoke their distinct personalities that more once help alleviate one another’s issue when the need arise. Unlike the MCs in their previous collaboration, Rich and Leo weren’t actually portrayed as the best in their respected “field.” But together they formed a formidable unit, and all the while being very human in the way their fear and vulnerability exposed.

Romance-wise, this was a mild heat-o-meter for Z-Witt combo in the way there was not much steamy scenes between the two unlikely allies. I’m not saying there aren’t any, but I hope what they had would tide readers over until the sequel released. As there were still many unsettled issues in this book anyway - I very much wanted the mole or the enemy within being disclosed - I hope the next book would address them along with Rich’s and Leo’s romantic affair. I can’t wait!!!

This writing duo has managed to animate words on a page so well I feel like I'm watching a movie--a very thrilling, very frightening, very sexy, very nerve-racking action adventure. I made a note in chapter one that says it all: "Halfway through chapter one and I have one foot on a banana already. It's going to be an exciting ride." And it was!

Rich is a US Marshal, former Marine, and suffers from PTSD. Leotrim was raised in the Mafia, son of a father in the Mafia and a mother who is Albanian, with her own gang connections. She left when he was a child and never looked back. One of the Don's sons fell in love with Leo and vice versa. His other son killed him. And now Leo is ready to bring down the whole organization in an intricate revenge plot. All he needs to do is survive to testify. And to help him, he's got a rookie marshal who suffers PTSD attacks at the most inopportune times.

Their banter and other interactions, the secondary characters, the mystery of who is on whose side, the chase, the escape, the chase again--all combine to make this hair-raising and fun to read.

I highly recommend this. Oh yes, and of course, I forgot to mention--their sexual tension was as much of a powder keg as the dynamite they used.

Well, I didn't know this was set in Chicago, and as it's a Marshals story, my mind immediately ran to Miro, Ian and Sam Kage from All Kinds of Tied Down by Mary Calmes, which is book 1 of one of my all-time favourite series.

While I certainly can't say this story is in that kind of league yet [how could it be, there's no Chickie Baby 😉], I did like the characters enough to maybe take a chance on the next story...which there definitely should be as Hope Rich gets something done about that PTSD though... 3.5 stars rounded up.

Reviewed for Just Love! And the best news ever is that there is a sequal in the works. So all of the begging I talk about below won't be needed. I'd still do it though! Can't wait to get my grabby hands on it.

THIS BOOK WAS SO MUCH FUN!!!!!

Okay, I know I’m a few days late as this came out a few days ago, but I’ve been sick. I’m actually still sick, so give me a pass, would you? It’s hard to use the brain muscle when you’re drugged up on cold meds and you just want to sleep all day. ANYWAY…

THIS BOOK WAS SO MUCH FUN!!!!!

I know, repetitive, but you guys, it really is a lot of fun. Double or Nothing is a fast paced adventure in mobsters, marshals, feds, ex-military friends who live in old missile silos, and just some of the hottest sex ever to hit the pages, paper or digital. And from what I could find, this is a stand alone so far, but dudes, if there is not a follow up book, I’m not sure what I’ll do. Pester the authors? Possibly. (YES) Write to my Congressmen? (Probs not) I just know I want another book and I want it now!

Rich’s adventure in protecting his witness, Leo, is really cool. Protecting Leo is a hard job, particularly when you don’t know who you can trust. And Leo’s adventure in being protected and actually having some of the best ideas in how to go about that, and basically being the best partner in this endeavor, was fab. But it’s even more because the story is huge, and it’s also written really well and concise, so while things move quickly and it’s all this fastpaceomgwhatjusthappendomg… the story is strong and easy to follow along. Side characters are interesting and have meaning for being there. The relationship that starts as protector/protectee, turns to reluctant friends, to finding something so much more and YOU GUYS, I really liked it a lot… maybe you can tell. Situations are sometimes a little over the top, but not so much that I was rolling my eyes. Nope. I only rolled my eyes when I got to the end and was like, OMG NO THIS CAN NOT BE THE END! I mean, the end does not actually solve all the problems they have so there has to be more coming.

So, in closing…Double or Nothing is suspense, action, fun filled romance reading that I really can’t tell you much about because that would just spoil the ride. What I want to tell you is to just pick up the book, read it, and join me in politely bugging the authors to please give us a follow up, and please do it now. Or you know, quickly. I’m down to beg and use bribery because I really want it that bad.

I received an advanced copy of this novel in exchange for a fair and honest review.

An enjoyable romantic suspense with a mobster-turned-witness and the marshall assigned to protect him on the run from both the mob AND the crooked LEOs after them.

Liked the story although it was about an hour or two too long, and Nick J. Russo's narration was fabulous.

Another really good, really entertaining co-write by Cari Z and LA Witt.

Once I had a sense of the characters I was engrossed and the secondary characters added extra dimension too.

This is a very well paced piece of storytelling which pretty much hits the ground running and keeps going until the end, but it's never frenetic.

There's a little bit of sexy time, a building of a relationship, all while on the run.

The ending is HFN as opposed to HEA but I believe this is book #1 in a series. Even so, I felt satisfied where it finished.

Dnf somewhere in the first half. I accidentally deleted it from my kindle so I'm not sure where I stopped. lol
I noticed a mistake in the plot, at least it was a mistake to me, I don't think it was left like that on purpose. And because of that, the story lost it's credibility.
Also I can say the same thing that I said about Risky Behavior. Not exactly what I head in mind when I was looking for a crime book.

3.2 stars〜3.5 stars. Mehh. I did like the PTSD inclusion & how sex didn’t solve it. Narration for Rich was BAD, but I changed the narration speed to 1.10x for his chapters & it was a bit better. I haven’t completely decided if I will read the 2nd book whenever it becomes available in audio format.

The way this pair of authors manage action is outstanding. I was unable to stop reading and I simply couldn't read fast enough. From the start to the end, DOUBLE OR NOTHING was an amazing experience. A perfect mix of action and love.

Rich is part of the US Marshal, and his latest job is being part of a team that will protect a witness who's being transferred to a safe house. Leotrim is a hacker who has ties to the Sicilian and Albanian mobs. He's willing to testify to bring every member of the Grimaldi family down as personal vendetta but his revenge won't end until he sees dead the person who murdered his lover. Things didn't worked out as planned and now Rich and Leo are on the run to save their lives as they are trying to escape from the mobs as well as the Marshals.

The plot was great. It had such a fast pace that I didn't even feel the time reading it. I loved how the actions was perfectly linked with emotions. There were a few moments when I felt like there would be no emotions involved in the story but I was so wrong. I particularly enjoyed the scenes when Leo had the opportunity to talk about Tony; it was lovely to get a hint of what their relationship was like and to understand the reasons for his actions.

The book isn't too romantic. I don't think the plot gave too much time for romance, it wouldn't feel realistic, but we do get to see some nice chemistry between Leo and Rich. They obviously feel attraction for each other, and even though I can't call it love, they really get to care for each other and end up having what it seems like the start of a relationship forged under extreme circumstances.

Overall, it was an amazing book. I would recommend it to anyone who loves books with a lot of action and prefer M/M pairing.
