Pyrodiah is in grave peril. The undying alien necrons have risen and swarm across the world, burning hive cities and decimating the population. The Imperial Knights of Adrastapol have arrived to help sway the war in the Imperium's favour, but their commander – Lady Jennika Tan Draconis, pilot of the storied Knight Fire Defiant – knows all too well the danger the necrons pose and the cost that will inevitably come with victory.

Sitting somewhere between Kingsblade and Knightsblade. this sees Lady Jennika Tan Draconis still coming to terms with her role as First Knight of Adrastapol. Pyrodiah burns under a necron assault, but the Knights of Adrastapol walk in its defence; leading several lances of Knights into battle, Jennika faces not only the soulless necrons but the prejudices of her own warriors.

Leadership struggles are a familiar theme in 40k stories, but deep-rooted sexism in a historically patriarchal society is less so. While on the surface this is a story about massive robots fighting alien robots, it’s also an exploration of a highly topical theme as Jennika wrestles with duty and honour in the face of danger and annoying men who should know better. It’s not essential within the series, but it’s an interesting little character study.

More of an addendum really...

This is less of a short story and more of a proof of concept really, this coupled with, "Becoming" are probably what their author Andy Clark submitted to greenlight his novel "Kingsblade".
I would suggest reading these short stories before the novel or not at all, otherwise they lose much of their appeal.
Definitely not worth the ~$9 they cost through Kindle.

First Knight Lady Jennika Tan Draconis, at the head of a zauvetage mission on a planet overrun by Necrons, must assume her place and the prejudices against her gender.
Interesting - if very brief - view of the patriarchal castes.
Jennika is an interesting character that I'll be following through Clarke's Kingsblade.

Good read

Great overall book lots of grim dark and action packed moments my only real complaint is the author made one mistake regarding the lore the necron gauss weaponry is all but useless against a knights ion shielding and in the book he does not take that into account
