Breaking the Rules

Rate this book
A forbidden love affair in the past has led Hope Robinson, a middle school principal, to Harbor Bay, Florida, where she commits herself to play by the rules. This can be difficult for a perpetual klutz, who - even strapped in a cast - has to uphold a competent attitude at all times.

Luckily, she has Dr. Colin Calaway on her side, a widower and father of a student, who is ready to give love another try. When Colin convinces Hope they should explore the connection between them, a steamy romance develops, though it could destroy them both. Omg! Why did i take so long to read this ? Breaking rules by Melinda Dozier , is defiantly one of those memorable sexy chiclite reads that leaves you grinning hopelessly by the end...with all the cuteness going on between the two leads.

"So, what’s with the hat?” He scratched his jaw and grimaced.
She laughed and tightened the grip on her head. “You mean my Red Sox cap?”
He squinted his eyes and shook his head. “Yeah, it’s a shame.”

“I could say the same about you.” She pointed to his Yankees hat, the same one he wore at Luigi’s. “I went to Boston College, so of course I’m a big fan.”
He squirmed. “And here I thought you were a nice woman.”

Wow....im surprised ! N ive got to say...its defiantly a pleasant one ! Initially when i picked up this book....i honestly went in with absolutely no expectations, the book seemed to rate pretty well with a few GR members...the story line seemed solid enough..n frankly ive just been letting this dust off on my TBR shelf ...was too long than i usually let ACRs to...and man am i glad i ever did ! .

The authour couldnt make them live in a more HEA land ieven if she tried....

“I better go.”
She sat up. “Really? But the two movies … the rest of the food.”
He picked up his water bottle and looked down. “If I stay, I’ll end up climbing on top of you and showing you a new version of mouth to mouth — even though you’re breathing.”
“Self-restraint, doctor. That’s what it’s all about. If I can do it, so can you.”
“Self-restraint is not in my dictionary at the moment. Especially with you in that flimsy top and short shorts.”

What a fun, sweet book! Breaking the Rules tells the story of clumsy, straight laced middle school principal Hope, who likes her desk tidy and her life tidier. But things take a turn for the complicated when she falls for the handsome dad of one of her students, Doctor Colin Calaway. Colin's a widower, and his love for son Jason is hard to resist. Hope's strict code is in for a shake-up.

Hope is a well developed, likeable heroine. She's an ardent rule follower, and fights her attraction to the man she considers off-limits. The author uses Hope's quirks to inject humor in every situation, from her lack of coordination to her insistence at setting a proper table, even at a pizza parlor. Ms. Dozier does an exceptional job using humor to keep the story light. And she does a great job of creating sympathy for her single dad, Colin, without making the reader feel manipulated. She keeps her story light and enjoyable, while still injecting depth and emotion into her characters. You can't help but root for Hope and Colin as you fall in love with her idiosyncrasies, his family, and the heartwarming bond between father and son. Ms. Dozier has crafted a story with lovable characters, a heartwarming plot, and the kind of happy ever after that leaves you smiling for days. I can't wait for the next story from this talented author!

****The author provided me with an ARC of this book for my honest review***
"Get it together, Hope. Stand up straight, one foot in front of the other. Think of Dr. McSteamy later, not in front of him for goodness sake."
Hope Robinson is new to Harbor Bay Prep. She's young, attractive, and determined not to let her love life get in the way like she did the last job.
Dr. Colin Calaway is a single father trying to be a successful doctor and a good parent to his son Jason. Their first meeting is not something Dr. Calaway is looking forward to, since he's being called into the principal's office about his son's detention. He wasn't expecting Ms. Robinson, boy the principal never looked like her when Colin was growing up.
Instantly attracted to each other there's one thing in their way, the fact that it would look unprofessional if Hope dated one of her student's fathers.
But having mutual friends and both being active at the school seems to be bringing both of them together and it's getting harder and harder to resist.
This book was fun and light hearted with likeable characters that had you cheering for them. I do wish it was longer so we could have spent more time exploring their relationship, and going through their drama, but Breaking the Rules is the perfect summer beach read!

I loved, loved, loved this book! In 'Breaking the Rules' Hope Robinson's the beautiful, career-focused new middle school principal who catches the eye of the amazingly hot orthopedic doctor, Colin Calaway, a widower whose son is a student in Hope's school. She's immediately attracted to Colin but determined to keep their relationship platonic as not to jeopardize her job by dating a parent of one of her students.

From the very first scene, sparks fly between Hope and Colin - So much so that when they finally get together you just know it's going to be good.

What I loved about this book is Melinda does such a nice job of describing the awesome feeling of a new love. I had butterflies in my stomach during their boardwalk date! I love books where the author effortlessly and vividly describes the emotions the hero and heroine are feeling, and Melinda does this very well. I couldn't help but root for this adorable couple and simply could not wait until some fun rule breaking took place!

In short, easily one of my favorite contemporary romances this year. It's a fun, quick read that I highly recommend.

I got this story from the author for an honest review. This was a very sweet story with an interesting twist. I've never read a story about a principal having a relationship with a parent of a student and I was curious how the plot would develop. The story had a nice flow to it and it was good that it didn't stay too much on the back and forth of "should I or shouldn't I be with him." I also like that the two main characters laughed/smiled a lot with each other and that the writer showed the importance of a father and son relationship.
When the story was over I found myself smiling. :)

Melinda Dozier has crafted two fabulous characters -- Hope, a strong, beautiful, independent woman who takes her job as principal seriously, and Colin, a sexy, widowed physician with a challenging teenage son.

Hope and Colin have concerns about embarking on a relationship despite their instant chemistry and dawning emotional attachment. I couldn't wait to see how they navigated friendships, family, career and their respective pasts to get their happily-ever-after.

Fantastic sweet and steamy romance that kept me turning pages long past my bedtime!

Hope Robinson is great principle and doesn't want anything to stand in the way of her doing her job. When she meets the widowed father of one of her kids she is immediately attracted to him but knows it would be bad for her career to get involved. Dr. Colin Calaway works hard whether it is at being a doctor or a single dad he does his best. When he meets Hope he knows he just has to get to know her better. Even while Hope tries to stay away it's hard to do when they are thrown together all the time. When a busy body sticks her nose where it doesn't belong they have to decide if it's for the best if they separate or if they should be together.

Hope has been hurt before and she is a little afraid to take a chance and worries over her job. She is beautiful, smart, very hard worker and can sometimes get tongue tied. I love how she gets all twisted around Colin. You can tell she has good mothering instincts as well with she acts around Jason and the kids in the school. Colin is a sexy single dad, a hard worker, can be sweet and loves to tease. He is an awesome dad and tries not to let his past tragedy get in the way of his life. Jason is a great kid. He gets into trouble but usually he does have good reasons for doing so. He really shines in the end of the book.

This is a wonderful book. I fell in love with these characters and wanted them to get together so bad. You can see the chemistry between them but it's the little things that make them great together and have you cheering for them to make it work. The teasing they give each other, the sharing of their past or even the way they get tongue tied around each other it's those small things the author adds that let you see them falling for each other. This book has one twist I didn't see coming and it only makes me love Colin even more. I have to say Jason really helps the story a lot as you can see how a kid in a situation like this may act. The author has done a fantastic job writing this book and it's one I would recommend to anyone who enjoys a good love story. The only thing I would have liked to see was Hope poor a drink on Tim lol. You have to read this and mix sure you will agree.

**I was provided with a copy from the author in exchange for an honest review**
Summary:
Breaking the Rules is a sweet contemporary romance about Hope Robinson, a middle school principal, and Colin Calaway, a doctor and the father of one of her students. Hope is still recovering from a bad relationship that interfered with her previous job and Colin is dealing with the struggles of being s single dad after the death of his wife two years ago. Hope and Colin first meet when Colin is called in to discuss the trouble his son Jason has been in at school and they both experience an immediate attraction. Hope and Colin continue to run into each other & their attraction to each other continues to grow. Colin wants to pursue a relationship, but Hope wants to avoid having a relationship with the father of one of her students in order to protect her job.

My thoughts:
I really enjoyed this story. After reading some very angsty romances recently, Breaking the Rules was the sweet lighted-hearted read that I needed. I really enjoyed the development of Hope and Colin's relationship, as well as the development of Hope's relationship with Colin's son Jason. The only thing I did not like about this book is that I felt like the ending was rushed and would have liked an epilogue or more about their relationship once they got together, because most of the book was leading up to them getting together. If you are looking for a sweet summer beach read, then give Breaking the Rules a try.

From the start of the book it snags the reader in and I could not put it down. It was a surprisingly enjoyable and fun read. The two main characters each come with some baggage that life brought them along the way and through it all they realize that happiness is not only something that can be reached but should be reached. I liked how the relationship progressed in a real and true fashion. There were light hearted moments, laughter on dates, some real issues as well how children deal with death of a parent, relationships that do not work out and end messy, and the entire fun process of getting to know another person. The author does a great job on making the characters stop being characters and become real. You can feel their laughter, their heartache, their joy, their frustration of situations. You become immersed in their love story and you become friends and family with the Hope and Colin. This was the first book I read from the author and my only criticism is the story ended! I didn't want to put the book down and wanted to continue to see how the characters grow and develop. I look forward to see what other books the author has. I would definitely recommend this book for anyone who is looking for a fun and enjoyable romance, where the emphasis is on the romance and the growing closer as a couple, and less on sex and lust

Breaking the Rules was a very sweet romance with very likeable characters. I enjoyed the way their story developed and finished it with a smile.

Hope is a middle school principal and not the most graceful woman around, which I found to be adorable and amusing. She meets Dr. Colin Calaway one day to discuss his son’s behavior at school and that begins their sweet story.

Dr. Calaway is a widower and a great dad to his son Jason. He seems pretty much like the perfect guy and just wants a shot with Hope, and even though she’s the principal at his school that’s what Jason wants too. I have to say this was a very sweet story and I completely fell for Colin and Jason right away.

Hope is afraid of getting involved with a parent and the effects it could have on her career.

Hope and Colin make a great couple though and I found myself rooting for them, wanting her to give him the shot he deserves. They are funny together and have such great personalities, it just seemed like they fit.

This was a quick read, but a good one. I enjoyed the writing and the sweet romance and well developed characters. I would definitely read more Melinda Dozier in the future.

I was given an ARC in exchange for my honest review. i really enjoyed this story of a principal hope robinson and dr colin with his son Jason. the dynamics of this story are a romantic story with humor and yearning in every page. Dr. Colin is a single dad his wife died in a car accident and he was left to raise his middle school son Jason. when Jason is being bullied in school and he decides to take matters in his own hands lands him in the principals office and dad a visit. when Dr. colin comes in he meets the most beautiful woman he has seen in a while. he falls kind of hard for her, she has well finds him very attractive but worries how this would look her hooking up with one of her parents. the whole story revolves around two adults that really have sparks but hope at every turn questions her status as a principle will it be okay. you go though different feelings and emotions due to hopes past that she cant just let the relationship blossom. in the end when a community and the love of her life come to fight for her she can't do anything but give in at that point. you will love this story and will not want to put it down.

BREAKING THE RULES by Melinda Dozier was Sweet, Funny and Sexy...Three fabulous Qualities for ANY romance, and the plotline was Fresh and New, something I haven't really seen before. Who knew a Middle School Principal could be sexy? haha

Hope and Colin meet when Colin's Son Jason gets detention because another child is being a bully, from there , the sparks fly...ok....they are a bit slow to burn, but soon they ignite and Hope and Colin try to start, what feels like something REALLY SPECIAL. But you know what happens when things finally settle....the other shoe drops....Mrs. Morales...GRRRRR

The build of relationship was realistic, and I loved watching these two tease, and literally fall for another (you have to read). Jason was just the sweetest thing, I completely would have fallen in love with Colin if only for the fact that his son is so sweet!

Great Story, and I got my HEA...ahhhh....Grab this one up if you want something Fresh and New. ABC Family and Hallmark fans will LOVE this one!!!

I loved this story. I first read it as a beta reader and then again once it was published by Crimson Romance. The very first thing that struck me was how much I identified with Hope. Clumsy to the point of being a "frequent flyer" at the doctor's office, she is also really sweet and overall someone I felt was a good person. I connected with her right away and really liked her.

Bring on Dr. McSteamy and we have a hot romance going on. Granted, a forbidden one since the good doctor is also the parent of a student at Hope's school. Their love has some starts and stops, and Hope tries to hold onto her head and keep her heart separate. Though there were a lot of great scenes, I have to say I loved their date and the beach party!

The real stealer of the show was little Jason, Colin's son. He likes Hope and it is obvious that kid needs a mom. I just wanted to reach out and hug him! Overall, another great read by Melinda! Looking forward to her next!

I was given an advance copy of this book for an honest review.

I have an injured arm and was looking for something to read while it heals. This book was offered to me and I jumped at the chance.

Hope Robinson is a klutz. She has broken something several times. This time it's her ankle. When she goes to get the cast removed, she finds out the doctor is the father of one of her students. In her eyes, that puts him off limits.

Colin Calaway is dreamy. Widower, father, doctor. He's just yummy.

That being said, I had a hard time believing Hope had a difficult time with dating him. That she's a principal and he's a student's father didn't seem to be the obstacle she made it out to be. However, I'm not an educator, so I don't know all the rules.

Apparently some of the townspeople think it's a big deal, and when Hope nearly loses her job, the good doctor and his son come to the rescue!

I read this in a couple hours. Enjoyed it, and will look for other works by this author.

Hope's a middle school principal, and Colin is the single father of one of her students. He's also a handsome, sweet, surgeon with a persistent interest in Hope. I loved their story, because Ms. Dozier managed to create a sympathetic character without making him a sad sack needing our sympathy. Colin is a widower, raising his son on his own, and the way Jason (the son) bonds with Hope just brings tears to my eyes. I rooted for Hope and Colin to get their happily ever after, and for Jason to get a mother, and at the end, I was cheering for Hope as she faced a huge challenge with aplomb. Breaking the Rules is a sexy romance and an easy read (with a fab ending), but there's a depth to the story and the characters. Ms. Dozier crafts a substantial story with a deft hand. Check it out--you won't regret it!

I love Melinda Dozier books. She has a way of making you connect with a character and want to be a part of their lives. This is a sweet romance that makes for a fun summer read.
I bonded with Hope. As I am reviewing this book about a woman who is a serious klutz, I am nursing a sprained wrist, pulled muscles and banged up knees. Am I Hope? I might as well be!
Colin is a single parent just trying to raise his kid right. I like the way that he doesn't give up on Hope, even if society frowns upon their relationship. The only thing that bugged me about the story was Hope's worry about her job. No job is worth being miserable and lonely for. I like that they chose their relationship and let the chips fall where they may.
This is one of those stories that everyone should have on their TBR list.

What a SWEET book! (*snicker--inside joke for those who have read the book!) I loved both of the characters, and there were several laugh-out-loud moments--both obvious and sneaky. I really felt for our hero, Colin, a widower who is raising a breath-taking little boy named Jason. Hope, the heroine, took longer for me to warm up to, because I couldn't help thinking she was too much of a Chicken Little--but then the sky really did fall on her job, and I realized she had been right all along. Breaking the Rules has a wonderful romantic-comedy feel, and it's perfect for summer reading.

I received an ARC copy for my review.

This was a good story, easy to read. The love story was slowly build, a young principal Hope who falls in love with the town widower Colin and father of student Jason. It was fun to read how the connection becomes a relationship and how many obstacles they have to fight in the process. But then the story suddenly ends, without having more insite in how the life for Hope, Colin and Jas will continue, I loved to read more about it. Maybe a sequel ??
That's why it's getting only 3 stars?
