Hey hey! Derek Borne here, and I'm a Canadian author of Sci-Fi novels. When I'm not writing, I spend time with my lovely wife and moody bearded dragon Ziggy (She's always looking at me like I'm an idiot). Other times, I'm eating pizza, belting out Broadway showtunes, playing guitar, eating pizza, watching anything to do with Marvel superheroes, and making movie references daily. Oh, and eating pizza.

And for added emphasis...... pizza

Our favorite dynamic duo is back and this time they pull out all the stops!

Picking up where book 1 left off, UA2 is another fast-paced, action packed adventure that will have you clinging to the edge of your seat or gripping your kindle so hard you fear you might crack it!

Derek Borne does not ease you into anything. He throws you right into the middle of the action and makes sure you have the ride of your life. He knows how to tell a story and his creativity knows no bounds! I can't spoil anything, I pride myself on spoiler free reviews, but man, the things this guy comes up with! It's crazy, but also awesome.

On this mission, we get to know a couple more agents that have been added to the fold. We get watch the heroes come up against some interesting new villains and a few familiar faces too as they once again try to protect the world. It's non-stop action and laughs with these guys, just like it always is. But it's also so much more!

This series is a must have if you love superheroes and insane hybrid beasts! Five out of Five Amazing Stars! Though I'd give more if I could!

This is book two book in the The UA Series. The UA Series picks up where book one left off so you should read book one first before jumping into this one. This series is a little different then the type of books I usually read. I struggled a bit with getting into book one but with this one I had no problems getting right into it. This one had me hooked from the beginning. It has a unique story line and a great group of characters. The Ultimate Agency runs more like family unit then a company. There's tons a of action and different experiments with animals all mixed in with superheros which makes a really great story. I enjoyed this one way more than book one and I'm so glad that I read this one. The ending was definitely not what I excepted but oh so good. I'm hoping that we get a book 3.

STORY

Fast-paced, action filled, and humorous, UA2 is a jammed up ride. The story continues off book 1 and pulls no punches as the storyline continues strong. The villain plot from book 1 continued but a new plot began, though it was all smooth and entertaining.

I have a few personal nitpicks about smaller things regarding general things, but that might be the fault of the spy novels I’ve read. Some things were very coincidental, and I’m not a huge fan of too many of those instances (ex. ) Overall, a great story.

THEMES

With every hero story comes great inevitable moralistic questions. Like, is killing the man who made you into an abomination just as wicked? Is revenge worth becoming a monster for? Since the characters in the novel are struggling over such questions, we see them come to life, and it was handled in good taste. Revenge is portrayed as a wicked thing. Killing those who wronged you is also shown as bad. Overall, the theme of vengeance is pretty well balanced. You have nonredeemable evil men and men who have done bad things but can still be saved. Personally, I feel this is a gray line hard not to cross, because we’re not God, so we can’t randomly choose who deserves a redemption arc, etc etc, but again, the book handled it fine. It didn’t get overtly pacifistic or anti-Christian.

I did enjoy the Biblical matters tackled in a light manner! Between the mentions of God and such, as well as the self-righteous maniac trying to cleanse the wicked world in the form of a Biblical persona, it was a wild ride.

However, some things were tackled tastefully, but still things I don’t fully embrace. But that’s the normal for every superhero genre I’ve read/watched. I mean, I don’t like magic and don’t like Marvel’s Scarlet Witch, or, hey, Vision. In this book, I liked the mental struggle of Tigershark, but from a Biblical view, shape-shifting isn’t good. Can science do it? Probably (and in this book, OBVIOUSLY) but it still isn’t necessary a good thing to do. But again, not a big deal, just my two cents since it is a topic I think often about, ha.

CHARACTERS

A solid cast with continuing character arcs, this book didn’t lack character development. I enjoyed Brett and Devon, as usual, and Val and Jade didn’t disappoint, either. I’m usually skeptical about new recruits, but Spencer was a riot!

While I enjoyed the characters, I’ll admit, sometimes the romance got a bit cheesy and over the top for my tastes. While nothing got steamy or anything like that, it was still occasionally unrealistic, but it might just be me.

Now, for spoilers, because AHHH.

-- Regarding Devon…
-- Regarding Frank...
-- Regarding Isaiah…

The villains were great and I so look forward to the next baddie-filled novel. Here’s to cliffhangers, y’all!

CONTENT

Mild to moderate violence, described but never gory. Descriptions of hybrid and scientific creations. Mentions of alcohol and overdose. Kissing and touching, nothing too graphic or detailed. Swearing and mentions of God’s name in vain.

OVERALL

It took about the midway point before I started really enjoying the ride but a solid novel. I look forward to book 3.

Luckily, I was able to read an early copy of THE ULTIMATE AGENT 2 (UA2) by Derek Borne. And I am glad that I did. This is a fun espionage/superhero/monster fighting/romance tale that exceeds the original book. I won't go into too much detail about the plot. However, if you happen to be a fan of AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D., THE AVENGERS, and even HELLBOY and BPRD (BUREAU FOR PARANORMAL RESEARCH AND DEFENSE), then UA2 is the book for you. This is a book with a lot of heart where The Ultimate Agency managed by Frank Thomas is about family. Especially, since as agents, they cannot be with their original families for fear of putting their families in danger. So they draw strength from each other. This is the underlining theme of the entire book that is well executed by Mr. Borne. There's a lot of character development and revelations. And nothing is as cut and dry as they would appear. So for anyone with a need for an action/adventure story that could be on par with the Marvel Cinematic Universe or aired on the SyFy Channel as a series of films or television series, then check out THE ULTIMATE AGENT 2 (UA2). You won't be disappointed. I know I wasn't.

I typically stick with romance novels but after reading the first one I was excited to read this one. It’s got a fantasy type feel when it comes to the whole superhero thing but it was still really enjoyable. I really don’t wanna go into too much detail but it does start off a little slow. It was a build up, which shouldn’t be bad, and maybe it’s a book funk but it finally did pick up and then I couldn’t put it down. loved seeing more of the characters from the first book.

There is some awesome action/battle scenes. I am a huge action movie fan and the author really painted a vivid picture. I really don’t want to give too much away but if you want something that might about out of your norm..... then this series is shaping up to be amazing. I am a strict romance reader but I am learning that sometimes it’s great to do a cleanser. There is some romance; but it’s not the focal point of the book. 4 stars #2OCCJD

Borne strikes again!

The Ultimate Agent 2 (affectionately called UA2 by those of us who are super cool) is a tremendous follow-up to the first book. Characters--both old and new--are developed splendidly. Borne's quirky sense of humor and intelligence seep through every line of this book. It is evident that this series is a work of love and comes straight from Borne's heart.

The book is an excellent choice for readers from the young adult age on. It is appropriate for almost all audiences, with no gratuitous sex, violence, or language. It is a book that can appeal to a variety of interests. Themes include: superheroes, spies, science-fiction, relationship drama, anthropomorphism, villains, and more. Borne has thought of everything, and he's done it in a way that truly works and feels carefree.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to just enjoy a book. It is an easy read, but a captivating one. Ultimate Agent 2 is sure to be a big success!

The Ultimate Agent: Book 2 by Derek Borne was a fantastic addition to the series. At the beginning, a reader could certainly be thirsty for the straight-into-action feel that was all throughout Book 1. Since the first part of the book was focused on establishing a solid relationship between Devon and Jade, it was a bit of a slow start and didn’t feel like an action-packed comic book until about 30% of the way into the book. The relationship itself was sweet, it was cute, the whole book was PG, which is something to really appreciate! Devon gets an opportunity to reconcile his past by running into his parents. Honestly, this part of the story seemed forced and short, but it gets brought back to the readers attention throughout the story and remains a problem for The Ultimate Agent to work through and resolve. Mostly, what was unsettling about the interaction, was that Devon’s parents were able to get their act together as a direct result of him leaving, and as a reader who is very empathetic to the characters of a story, that was a really difficult conflict to overcome. It was okay at the end, but more could have been there. Maybe Borne is saving that for Book 3. New agents are introduced in the second book like Agent Spencer, who is transformed into a literal Tiger/Shark by a mad geneticist. At first, this almost lost the book a star because there were so many ways to infer how the character was going to grow through the book, and it was really, really, really out there. However, it’s a superhero story, so everything is on the table, and the character ends up very well rounded and becomes an excellent addition to the Ultimate Agency. He even became a personal favorite (but no one beats The Specialist). He has a very heartbreaking interaction with his cousin that put a lot of emotion and character building and resolve in one spot. It was a difficult hump to get over as well, but again, ultimately, it helped to move the characters forward at a reasonable pace. To avoid too many spoilers, I’ll say that there are some deep losses in this book, and it moves all of the agents into a more visceral place, a place that made them more human and easier to relate with from a “normal person” point of view. They’re still vulnerable, and that’s important to keep at the forefront of stories like this. Borne did an excellent job with that. The book finally became something that I couldn’t put down at about 50% of the way through the story. Before then, the story was still good, and the characters were still lovable. After that half-way mark, the action came back, sunk us back into the story, and kicked some major hind end. Even with all of the epic superhero powers, abilities, gadgets, and gizmos at the disposal of the agency, Konstantin is a formidable foe. There was some serious super villain character fleshing out, and Derek really opened up a whole new can of worms through this expansion of Konstantin’s character. The conclusion of the book leaves me wondering where Derek is going to take The Ultimate Agency next, and I am so ready to find out when he publishes Book 3. Overall, The Ultimate Agent: Book 2 was amazing and earned its full five stars.

I was able to get an early copy of this book for several reasons that I’m pretty sure will result in a restraining order. I’m ok with that as long as it gets lifted before book 3 comes out and I promise to stay at least 500 feet away from the author.

I have been a fan of this series for awhile. It has captured a love and joy in my heart that is hard to describe. It reminds me of more simple times when good is good and bad is awful. It is easy to decide who you hate and the hero always wins. It makes me smile and it gave me the perfect reprieve from some of the heavier stuff I read. It has a friendship that is pure and impossible to duplicate. There are just so many things that make this series special to me that it was important that I read UA 2.

Now my feelings on the book not the series. The bromance is alive and well. Those two boys Brett and Devon have my heart ❤️. Their relationship is amazing and overshadows many of the other relationships in the story. I adore the things these boys can do together like saving the world multiple times and razzing each other. Spencer was a break out secondary character for him. I loved struggles he went through both physically and mentally. I thought he was well developed and I want more of him. The settings were well described and easy to imagine. I thought the author did a fantastic job. The fight scenes seemed spot on. They were fast paced had enough description for you to comprehend but also left out just enough for your own imagination to take over a little bit. There were times when I would set down the book close my eyes and just replay the action in my mind. Trust me the fight scenes are epic.

Overall, I devoured it and loved it. It was fast paced, fun, witty, descriptive, well developed and intense scenes. It is the perfect read for anyone who appreciates a good superhero book that will put through many emotions and make your imagination run wild with hybrids.

I had the good fortune to get my paws on an advanced copy of this classified material and I was blown away by the information it contained!
You'd think that life at the Ultimate Agency would settle into some sort of genteel rhythm for our heroes, but that's not the case. There are new villains to fight, sacrifices to be made, animals to pet...er...contain. This place is an absolute zoo!
Book 2 picks up near immediately where Book 1 left off so I would highly recommend starting with Book 1. I enjoyed how the characters continue to develop and grow. I also enjoy the creativity put forth to come up with a new angle and new type of villain to fight. The friendship and familial bonds displayed among the characters is also very nice to read. For reasons that will remain top secret, I laughed and cried, and possibly shook my fist in the air in outrage. This book is enjoyable because it's simple. Good guys are good, and it's pretty clear who the bad guys are. The suspense comes from trying to figure out how they're going to save the day each time an obstacle arises. If you're a fan of traditional good guys like Cap and Superman, then you'll probably enjoy this series.
It's a PG-13 book because of the fight scenes, but otherwise a pretty clean read for those of you who enjoy stories without hanky panky and cussing.
All in all, UA2 is a classically fun escape, which is why I read in the first place.

Ultimate Agent 2 by Derek Borne was the epitome of what a sequel to a superhero book should be. All the main characters were back with a few new people. The book left off where Ultimate Agent ended but this book explained so many unanswered questions I had. I went through emotions that I was not expecting to. I laughed, I cried, I laughed more, and fell in love with the characters all over again. The best part about this book is that it is a series that I can read with my son and we discuss it. If you haven’t been introduced to this amazing series… what are you waiting for?

Some of my favorite quotes….
“If you can’t find it in yourself to forgive your enemies, then how can you expect anyone to look at you like a hero?”
“Saving the world one bedpan at a time.”
“Love is about making your own kind of perfect with someone.”

( I voluntarily received an ARC of this book )

Short and sweet and to the point, I loved everything about this book. You haver no idea how much I am in love with everything, the characters, the plot even the villains. I don't know what I'm going to do while waiting for the third book.

Like the first book, UA2 was fast paced, fun, engaging and entertaining. I don't want to give anything away because this book is just that outstanding. Just know that this series is more then an original piece of fiction, it is epic. It will change the way you look at superhero books, movies, basically superhero everything!

Please, please take my super high recommendation that you will become just as, or more, obsessed with this series then, me.. okay that's a stretch.. please prove me wrong.

Happy Reading!

Get ready for action, suspense, tension, intrigue, and prepare to lose yourself to a lusciously intricate plot, superb characters and intense conflict. Fasten your seatbelts for an emotional rollercoaster ride, where you will feel anguish, sorrow, joy, excitement and pure happiness. It's the perfect book to read around this time, because you get so absorbed into it, you lose track of reality. Being in that well-constructed world, not having to worry about any of the problems in today's society. To be honest, I read this after having a bad day, and when I finished it (yes, I read it in a day) I felt energized.

It honestly felt like a comic book, without the pictures, and a deeper and more eloquent plot. And the characters are so well built and so realistic, they make you delve deeper.

And that ending... You will wish you had book 3 available there and then. Not sure how I am going to wait for it...

I guess to summarize, I have to say that I found my new favourite Canadian superhero. He may not be everyone's favourite, but take a chance on this amazingly written action packed story.

5 STAR Review by Jodi for Ruby Red Romance Review

I loved this book. I had the privilege of reading the first book in this series. I loved every single second of this book. If you love superheros this book is totally for you. This book is full of action. I fell in love with the characters new and old. I don't want to give anything away about this story, but I will say, be ready for the epic battle.

While is series isn't your typical love story, it is in a way. It's about the love of you have for family. Not just those who are family by blood, but those who you make your family. I love the idea of that and in this book, there a strong sense of family.

This book is great. I sincerely hope you will check it out.

You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, cheer and jeer, and even become speechless. I was not expecting the huge range of emotions that encompassed this story. The characters remained dynamic, interesting, and flawed making them well rounded, even the villains. The relationships between friends, family-by blood or otherwise,(framily), and personal conflicts are heightened throughout the book. Spencer was an awesome addition to the team! This book, and series, really has something for everyone. There are always take aways in the books and this is no exception. “I’m going to tell you right now, don’t ever give up on yourself or your dreams. Because I can assure you that one day, when no one’s looking, you’re going to achieve it.”

“Saving the world one bedpan at a time.”

***I received an early copy of this book***

Full of action from start to finish! What would you do if a mad scientist and an actual tiger shark ruined your secret agent wedding? My thoughts exactly! This book has it all...the touches of romance, evil villains and mad scientists, butt kicking hero’s, and crazy animal hybrids that you can only dream about. The agency also experiences a couple of heartbreaking moments that tests the characters and I feel like that’s a moment of growth for Brett and Devon. Derek has literally outdone himself with this one. The ending was a bit of a cliffhanger...I also loved the artwork that was included at the end of the acknowledgments page.

The action in this book is non-stop. The witty sarcasm keeps an element of humor going as well. The losses to the UA certainly warrant locks and extra security. I hope there is a UA3 that puts it all back to rights.

It is by great sacrifice Heroes and Heroines rise.

Each from their own past. With truly human weakness and flaws. Choosing to give of themselves for the greater good of all. I really appreciate in this story. No one is assumed a total loss. All are given opportunity to change for the better. Sadly, some will never take that chance.

Just like the first book, this second installment is full of corny humor and is extremely cheesy. It reads like a kids' comic book and is definitely geared toward juvenile readers who aren't looking for a deep plot or in-depth, believable characters. The writing is still a little rough around the edges, but the target audience is sure to overlook that.

Sadly, Maximus is no longer the main threat, but a new scientific villain (or is he?) has emerged to wreck havoc and destruction around the world under the control of the previous book's mastermind. The end fight sequence leaves off with questions that perhaps will be answered in the next book, but I think we can all safely guess where it's headed.

A Great YA read. If I had kids, this is a book I'd gladly read with them. The action never stops but amongst all of it (and the jokes) there are life lessons everywhere. And, yes, the adults reading the book can take these lessons to heart as well. In the end, the author killed me. Twice! Or was that three times? Let's just say there were tears. Tears that surprised me. I wasn't expecting them. Not where they happened nor how/why. Also, there may have been some frustrated groans and "oh no he didn't" along the way. Maybe even an "Oh, snap! Yes, she did." To say I'm intrigued by book 3, is to put it mildly. I think I have something figured out but do I? Has Max been replaced by Spencer in my heart? And most importantly, how long will I have to wait to find out?

Agents Devon Bertrand and Brett Gallagher (codenames The Ultimate Agent and The Specialist respectively) are back with another wisecracking bromantic action-adventure. If arch banter, wild superpowers, and whiz-bang tech are your jam, grab this series. It’s good dumb fun with a great big heart.

Even a strange hybrid creature can’t ruin Bertrand’s wedding to the lovely Dr. Hathaway, but there’s barely any honeymoon when an old nemesis attacks. The hero team suffers a heartbreaking loss that threatens their unity when they need it most to battle apocalyptic monsters attacking all over the world. Will superpowers and gadgets be enough to save the world? Action and comedy blend with emotional depth as heroes dig deep for what really matters.

This is a wildly imaginative ride, whether gadgets, superpowers, or mashed-up creatures. Devon and Brett seem to know that their banter is annoying, and they milk it for all it’s worth, which I respect even as I roll my eyes. I found the romantic relationships disappointingly traditional, considering the literal and metaphorical strength of the female characters. One of the pairings shows potential for something weirder (in a wholesome way) so I’m not giving up hope! I will be reading the next book soon.
