I really liked Hajime Tsukishima's tragic backstory in which he later reveals how he formed a loyal bond with Tsurumi. Despite the fight scenes, I suppose it was an average read.
SO MUCH HAS HAPPENED IN THIS VOLUME Satoru Noda you genius you
We moved to Karafuto (Sakhalin island) and it's been a non-stop fun and wild action. Stenka na stenku fights were awesome, Man Vs Wolverine fights were intense, I love seeing how (not well) Sugimoto & Tanigaki & Koito & Hajime work together. Cikapasi is here too! A couple of scene we've had of Asirpa make my heart break. She is surrounded by dangerous people with only one true ally and it's Shiraishi... yeah things are doomed. Hajimi backstory!!! I was gasping. Tsurumi you damn plotter. I still don't know what the truth is. Sugimoto going berserk was terrifying. That one line about how "he is useless" broke me. I love the correct (both socially and grammarly) use of Russian language in this volume.
Golden Kamuy has soldified itself as one of my favorite manga ever.
It was never going to top what volume 14 did, were it not coming right after it, it might be a 5/5. It starts slow and eases you into the new status quo, it’s seasoned with cute wolverines and tons of homo-erotica and has a naked fight club that makes a solid third of the book fly by in 30 seconds. Tsukishima gets a few chapters at the end for his origin story. The art is beautiful, the action perfectly presented. Golden Kamuy is life.
Okay, okay, so it was a wolverine not a badger. Fortunately, no spines were severed in the wolverine attacks. After the furious pace of the last volume, I suppose we needed a breather in this one, but will were still graced with the brutal stenka brawling (with nearly dire consequences for Sugimoto and his team). Noda sensei was fully committed to his penchant for drawing naked men! Cover your eyes if you are put off by bare butts! I’m not certain that every background character needs a full flashback chapter, so the Tsukishima finish in this one fell flat for me. I loved the Asirpa moments, particularly her confidence in Sugimoto’s moniker as IMMORTAL SUGIMOTO! As always, I am looking forward to what comes next.
Tsurumi is so twisted but it’s what makes him a good leader, his ability to manipulate. It’s interesting now, being able to contrast who he was before his head injury to who he is in the present. It feels like not much has changed other than his inhibition, which is terrifying.
Sugimoto, likewise, is going through some changes. He is absolutely booking it in his search for Asirpa like a dog with its tail on fire. His original feral attitude has only compounded in intensity as he determination and brain injury add to it.
Also, man, leave Tanigaki alone!! He can be a big boy if he wants to be, lol. I appreciate this series having levity as it makes sure to include comedy while also being heavy on the action and anxiety.
I loved the comedic aspects that Noda put into this volume and I really enjoyed the bond Cikapasi and Enonoka are forming it’s so adorable. I enjoy how me get a lot of backstory for the other side characters as it was really interesting learning about Tsukishimas past and how he met Tsurumi it made me enjoy his character more and see where his motives are coming from. This series as a whole just blows me away it really does have everything. I just need Asirpa and Sugimoto to reunite ASAP. Also page 116 my heart!!! 🥺
I have mixed feelings about this volume. While I don’t usually mind filler content, this particular volume didn’t quite hit the mark for me. The sudden introduction of backstories felt abrupt and a bit forced, and I didn’t like the execution at all. It felt like the pacing was off, and the way the backstories were presented didn’t allow for the emotional depth I usually expect from this series.
That said, one thing this volume reaffirms is that this manga is packed with bizarre, eccentric characters, and I suppose that’s part of its charm.
It took me forever to finish this volume because the first half is a very unwelcome diversion from the crescendo of the previous volume. Gotta slow everything down to a halt to have a big gay shirtless group fight with a bunch of Russian guys, never change Satoru Noda. The second half of this is really great, we get some backstory on Tsukishima and lieutenant Tsurumi’s head wound. Can’t wait for Sugimoto and Asirpa to reunite.
Running out of superlatives for this series. I read that it's about to end, that the 31st volume will be the final one - there are 25 out in English right now from what I can tell. It's nice knowing that I have a ways to get yet, and that the series will probably have a fitting conclusion.
This series is the BEST! Tsukishima's backstory is wonderfully written and tragic. It's great to see a nicer side of Tsurumi, you really get his magnetism from this backstory. So many of the cast in this series are nuanced and multifaceted in all the right ways. Complex and truly HUMAN characters. Cream of the crop, this!
A strong volume, despite the split party the story stays focused. I liked Sugimoto in this volume too, displaying some vulnerability and loads of rage. Enjoyed the interactions with the tattooed convict as well.
Estoy maravillado con esta obra. Cada personaje está tan bien construido y la trama se dispara en tantas direcciones tan bien manejadas… No puedo creer que hasta la historia de un personaje que parecía tan secundario fuera tan bella.
Seeing Tsukishima drop the braid of hair and watch it disappear was heart-wrenching;; After every volume I just want to say "This volume was the most amazing thing!" it always tops itself in different ways, and strikes chords in my heart I didnt realize could be struck.
