The only money guide New Zealanders will ever need From New Zealand's most trusted writer on money matters, a one-stop-shop for making the most of what you have. Mary Holm is the most trusted writer and reliable long-term adviser on money matters in New Zealand. She has received thousands - yes, actually thousands - of emails from readers of her Weekend Herald Q&A column and listeners to her RNZ personal finance segment. She has discussed money issues with thousands of employees at workplace seminars, and thousands more students in university lectures. Better than anyone else, she knows what worries New Zealanders about money, what they misunderstand, the mistakes they make - and their hopes and dreams. And she knows what she's talking about. Mary holds a master of business administration degree in finance from one of the world's top business schools (the University of Chicago). Most important of all, unlike many writers of finance books, Mary is not selling any products or services (except this book!). She doesn't want to sign you up for costly advice or courses or investments. She just wants you to do well. She's on your side.
Let’s begin by saying I don’t understand economics or finance. Or I didn’t. But now I have at least a basic understanding of how to invest my money better, how to decide how much risk to take, and how to diversify my money.
Mary has an easy way of talking to the reader with lots of case studies and examples (both good and bad) that help illustrate her points.
Well worth the read if you live in Nee Zealand as the context is very specific to our context such as Super and KiwiSaver. However if you do not live in New Zealand, you would still get many worthwhile gems about how to save more effectively and what to do with those savings rather than putting them in a term deposit. I know I will be changing where my money goes as of today.
This book should be compulsory reading for any young New Zealanders when they start to earn some money, as making the right financial decisions early on will make a big difference to their wealth later in life.
Mary has a great easy writing style, and being centered in New Zealand it offers so much practical, tangible and usable advice for future planning your finances.
