Vivian and Leo are running the small island paper, whilst Leo’s father is recovering from a heart attack. Leo’s father wants his son to take over his newspaper empire and has Vivian promise to help him, hopefully keeping Leo away from Africa and the dangers there, whist covering up his father’s actual recovery. While on a night out with her close friends, a strange phone call and an island girl, Phoebe, having a fall, Vivian ends up accompanying Phoebe to the hospital for a broken arm and overhears something she shouldn’t.

She is concerned about the care Phoebe may receive and is shocked to find out the girl died later that night. The hospital say is was an accidental morphine dose, but from what Vivian had already overheard and now this, she thinks it’s murder. She and some of the reporters on her team, set out to try and find out the truth. They find out that Phoebe had a shady past and a possibly dangerous accomplice/boyfriend.

There is reference to a certain ‘vengeful caller’, from the title and that leads them all in different direction as there are several potential suspects. The hospital has ordered its staff not to talk to the reporters. Who is willing to talk and who is telling the truth, will get them closer to the final suspect. But the closer Vivian gets, the closer she is to getting in the way of the true killers vengeance.

An exciting and not overly long read, which just took up part of a morning. The book also covers things such as guilt, whether that be for something you have done, or more something you are keeping secret or stopping someone else to pursue. That put a good spin on the feeling of guilt and how it can manifest. The main characters are enjoyable and you get to learn a good amount about them. There are enough dead bodies, twists and turns to keep you wondering what might happen next. The actual suspect is not who you might expect and makes a good ending.

I would certainly read some more books by this author, hopefully a bit longer, so they can go into more depth with characters and plotlines. This was a fine book to read, whilst whiling away part of a day and was easy to do so. I received an ARC copy of this book from Hidden Gems and I have freely given my own opinion of the book above.

Review: THE VENGEFUL CALLER by Rachel Woods
(A Palmchat Island Mystery)

THE VENGEFUL CALLER is a really intriguing romantic suspense tale set in paradisical surroundings on a Caribbean island. The characters are readily likable, and even the bad guys are comprehensible. From the electrifying reader's hook (where i found myself sympathizing with both killer and victim), suspense is unstoppable and the more the revelations, the more there is to discover, making for a fast-paced story.

Husband and wife investigative journalists Leo and Vivian are back. Leo’s dad wants him to take over the newspaper but Leo has other plans. Vivian goes out on a girls night out which turns badly when one of the girls tries to escape a stalker and has a bad fall that leads bother Phoebe Wall and Vivian in the hospital. But Vivian overhears something that has her worrying about Phoebe. The next day she learns that Phoebe died of an accidental morphine overdoes. But with what she hears Vivian and Leo decide to look into Phoebe. What the couple finds is a shady past, several suspects and lots of guilt around.

I like Vivian and Leo, they work well together but the guilt of secrets didn’t make them as close as they could be. Beyond that, this is a great thriller that had me guessing. Just when I thought I might know the who and why of the killer I was thrown off. I was definitely on my ties with this one.

This is a great sequel to The Prodigal Captive. I quickly got into the story and couldn’t put the book down. It is a quick read that left me satisfied with the mystery yet wanting more of Vivian and Leo. I can’t wait to read more from Rachel Woods.

I received a complimentary copy of this book. I voluntarily chose to read and post an honest review.

First, I want to thank Rachel Woods for providing me with this book so I may bring you this review.

Vengeful Caller is Rachel Woods best book that I have ever read by her! Rachel has written great books in the past but this went above and beyond. It was fast paced, twists and turns at every corner, shady doctors and nurses, murder investigations, hotel scams, husband and wife investigators, major cover ups, reporters trying to get the real story, fake autopsies, a Ginger boyfriend, and an ending you never saw coming.

Rachel’s story is something you would see on a soap opera or in a movie. It is just that good and that sinister that it would make for amazing tv or movie. I would definitely watch it.

Rachel definitely knows how to captivate her readers in the story. I was literally glued to my kindle and could not put it down. Each character was unique to their role and made it interesting. Danny the Ginger spoke a language I never even heard of before.

I started this book this morning and just finished it. I honestly couldn't put it down. I am a sucker for murder mysteries and The Vengeful Caller did not disappoint. I thoroughly enjoyed trying to solve the mystery of who killed Phoebe. There were a few unexpected twists, which will definitely keep the reader guessing til the end. You really have to pay attention to even the smallest seemingly insignificant details. I thought each of the characters were really brought to life by the addition of a backstory for them, instead of having these flat two dimensional characters who are only there for plot progression. Although the book isn't very long, the author did a wonderful job of creating an intriguing murder mystery with a well thought out and written conclusion, without it seeming rushed. I voluntarily reviewed this after receiving a free copy via Hidden Gems.

This is the second book in the Palmchat Islands Mysteries series, and it's as full of twists and turns, thrills and spills as the first. I won't go into the story as it's available in the book blurb and I hate spoilers, but I will say that the one negative thing about the book for me is that the ongoing secret Viv is keeping from Leo is constantly bandied about through this book. It was very frustrating (hence the 4* for an enjoyable read)! But otherwise it's an excellent story and I'd definitely recommend it to anyone who likes a good murder mystery, especially with a twist of romance. Can't wait to see what the author comes up with for book 3!
NB I received a complimentary copy of this book, but I always give an HONEST review based wholly on my own opinions

Leo and Vivian are investigating the death of a beautiful island girl. She has an aggressive stalker after her, and when she gets away from the stalker she falls and ends up in the hospital. But she doesn't make it. The hospital is calling it "accidental morphine overdose". Vivian thinks is might be murder. As she and Leo dig into the girl's past, they find some things that are not on the up and up. She has a shady past, and while talking to those that knew the girl, they think they have a few suspects. Is one of them the killer? If so, is Vivian going to be the next victim for getting too close? You will need to read the book to find the answers. I would like to thank Hidden Gems for a copy of this ARC for me to voluntarily read and review.

The second book in the palmchat island series! Vivian has a girls night out with her coworker and her friends. When they leave and drop off Phoebe whom they think is drunk takes a turn for the worst and ends up in the hospital. When Phoebe dies in the hospital under suspicious circumstances. Vivian realizes there is a cover up. Once Vivian and her husband delve into Phoebe’s past and find out what a shady character she is it opens up the list of suspects. This was even better than the first book. I love Vivian and Leo and how good they work together as investigative reporters and married partners! I highly recommend this book, series and author!

This is an enjoyable read. Interesting storyline and complex characters keep the book moving at a fast pace.

The newspaper business is good and Leo’s father wants him to step into his place as the head of the company he has built. Leo has other plans. He wants to continue to be an investigative reporter and go back to Africa where he met his wife, Stevie. Stevie enters into an agreement with Leo’s father to keep him on the island. They are also investigating a local murder.

I received an arc of this book and voluntarily provided a review.

3.75 Stars I enjoying catching up with Vivian and Leo. I am always curious to discover what case they are working on solving. This “who done it” mystery isn’t as dark as the last book in this Series. Also, Vivian and Leo aren’t in grave danger as they have been in past storylines. What is in danger is their marriage, as Vivian isn’t being honest with Leo. Obviously, Vivian is torn up with guilt over the secret she shares with her father-in-law. Though, I could have done with less internal thoughts on this subject by Vivian.

I have loved the classic films that starred sleuthing couple Nick and Nora Charles. Leo and Vivian like the Charles', inadvertently find themselves questioning what really happened to Phoebe Wall. Her life filled with secrets and mystery, her death was no simple accident. The author has crafted a story that twists and turns, while entertaining. I enjoyed this latest adventure with a couple who have fast become a favoured crime fighting duo.

This is a well written murder mystery that had me on the edge of my seat reading and turning the pages as fast as I could to find out what would happen next. I was never a murder mystery reader but this author has pulled it out of me and I have found a new genre to love. The investigative duo of Vivian and her husband Leo are a perfect combination and I look forward to reading about their next case. I voluntarily reviewed a copy of this book.

Vivan and Leo carry you on this one keeping your interest and help through the intrigue. Could be too that murder was on the plate with me being one of those that are like a Sherlock in having to get those clues. The pace in this is one that will be steady without too many bumps that keep the reader engaged. This was not the first one I have read from this author so I do like her signature. Characters that can get through without disappointment are a plus as these were strong ones.

Vengeful Caller

A murder mystery that will have you til the very end. All in all a great book. You could actually almost starr with this book. But you'd be lost in some parts. Recommend reading in order though.

Leo and Vivian are at it again. Always in the thick of things. They know something fishy is happening inside the St. Killian General Hospital. But what and who are the mysteries of this little story. So get ready for another adventurous ride.

Another enjoyable read in this series. I can't wait to read the third book. I am sure to find more of her books and read them. I like the mix of romance and mystery. I don't like the secrets that are being kept in the book. I am hoping it comes out in book 3. I think that the main character kept the secret for what she thought was a good reason...but I don't think it is ever a good reason to keep a secret like that. I am sure others would enjoy reading this book as well.

A longer novella, a great murder mystery and a steamy romance all in ONE book!
Another murder mystery has hit St. Killian, and as fate would have it, Vivian and Leo Bronson are in the thick of it. Using skills perfected in years of investigative reporting, Leo Bronson takes time from his publishing duties to help his wife, managing editor of the Palmchat Gazette discover what is behind the murder of a mutual friend. But not all of the story is about figuring out the “who done it”, not when the ever-romantic Leo and his loving wife are involved! Readers who love a little romance with their mystery or a bit of mystery with their romance will not be disappointed with this steamy tale. Rachel Woods writes with an exquisite mix of both romance and mystery so that her readers are satisfied, entertained and anticipating the next installment of the Palmchat Islands Mystery! Wood’s prose is smooth, the characters are rich, and the main characters are well-developed yet reveal new informant with each book in the series. The pace is quick, and the suspense is real; making the plot edge-of-your-seat compelling! I was given an ARC copy of “THE VENGEFUL CALLER” to prepare this honest, voluntary review and must give it 5 stars even though it is a shorter read. Get your copy today!! Happy pages! 😉
