It was supposed to be a weekend camping trip to get some research data on a bat colony, but it turned out to be a hike through Hell. Glyn was scared of bugs—all bugs, but when her boyfriend invited her on a camping trip, she was determined to find something to love about the outdoors. Instead, she found everyone’s worse nightmare.
Four friends set out to explore a cave in the desert and get more than they bargained for. A fun, fast-moving thriller that would work pretty well as a cable creature-feature. The author does a good job of creating an interesting (and threatening) setting and the characters are pretty well-developed considering the brevity of the tale, especially our heroine, Glyn. Though the story moves well, the writing is at times pretty sparse and the author doesn't always describe things clearly. Scenes can even change without any sort of literary transition, which causes unnecessary confusion at times. Still, once things get moving the story flies by, and the conclusion is unexpected but appropriate. Overall, a quick but satisfying read that offers up some good chills.
I didn't realize how short this book was when I bought it. The cover looked great and scary. Unfortunately, the book felt like it was hurrying to finish. It didn't move smoothly at all. Too much action in too little time. I didn't like the main character. She ran out on her friends when they needed her the most. The whole thing was like the author was trying to fit a long novel in as few pages as possible. A huge disappointment.
