Kaguya is the vice president of their prestigious academy’s student council and she's in love with, Miyuki, the president, and he with her! BUT both are well aware that in love there is always a winner... and neither wants to be the "loser!" As both are geniuses and quite proud they spend each day laying in wait for an opportunity to get the other to confess without losing face... only Chika, their secretary and Ishigami, their treasurer, seem ready to innocently mess up their careful machinations.
Kaguya-sama: Love Is War vol 5 was soooo different from the previous volumes... in a good, good way! Up until this point what we were getting from this series was... serious funny! Yes, the machinations of these two wannabe love birds is totally hilarious... and as other characters were introduced their inability to confess to one another has just been confounded... in a snorting, giggly sort of way. But in this vol we got some serious feels, like I melted into a puddle and slid to the floor sort of feels. I couldn't wait to see how far it would go so I sped through the pages feeling all the emotions!
I found the plot in vol 5 also quite balanced... We get some followup on previous plot, we get some time with the lovely and intense Chika, as well as some time with the Ai / Kaguya and Miyuki / Chika combos. Woven into this Kaguya and Miyuki seriously do the courtship dance. I really love how both stay true to themselves... Miyuki has consistently been the one to go all out with calculated risks while Kaguya is the serious planner and executor. They also take cues from the other this time and it really shows how close they've grown from crushing on each other to really genuinely liking one another.
Kaguya-sama: Love Is War is such a gorgeous and fun series. I have come to really love the art and how different it is from what you expect... and how extreme their expressions get, lol. But I seriously am loving how full of depth this comedy series has gotten, we not only have humor, tension, romance, competition, friendship and more HUMOR but now we can add the FEELS to the list!! I can't wait to get vol 6 in this well created comedy series!
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Authenticity ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Tension ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Plot ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Art

Summer vacation is here and it's still a battle of minds between Shinomiya and Shriogane. Both now have a serious crush on one another, feels like it's crossed into love/obsession territory, but they are also equally obsessed with outstanding each other. Will either of them crack, or are they destined to not see each other for the whole summer? Shinomiya just wants to see the fireworks! They also have other things to figure out, like whether to follow each other on Twitter, and if love compatability based on their birth dates/horoscopes have any truth to them. One thing is certain, if they are going to be a couple, they both need to let their guard down, but will their stubborn minds allow it?
As much as the two main characters frustrate me sometimes, Chika Fujiwara is such a breath of fresh air, this series is addictive and entertaining.
This was another great volume!!! Except now this is very difficult for me to review because I read half of this volume week by week as the chapters got released, so nothing but the last chapter is fresh in my brain right now. But I'll try my best!!
This volume started out with with its first actual arc which I will dub the “Summer Break” arc. That might even be its actual name, I dunno. This was a quite serious arc, and served to push along the romance more so than for comedy (like is usually the case with most of the chapters in this series). Now I don't know about anyone else, but I LOVED this arc. I normally don't reeaallly like episodic shows or manga, but this manga is so funny that it was an exception. With this being said, it was still really nice to read (and I have actually been hoping for) an actual arc that spanned a couple chapters instead of just one. It was a blast and also a feels-fest which is something I wasn't expecting. The combination of the story and miraculously fitting music that my shuffle decided to play while I was reading actually ended in my eyes tearing up a bit. It was quite beautiful, really.
The rest of the volume was back to regularly scheduled hilarity. Character bonding and hilarity. It's hard to say much more because whatever there is to say about this series has already been said in my past reviews. If by some disastrously terrible fate you're reading this review and you haven't started this series yet, I would strongly suggest you get on that.
During the entirety of my reading of this series I have been conflicted on how to rate the volumes. Right now I literally have zero idea. For simplicity's sake I'll just continue being consistent and also rate this volume 4 stars. I'll just say here that all of these four-star rating are actually probably closer to 4.5 star ratings, seeing as this is one of my favourites, for sure. *EDIT 1* Actually, you know what, screw it, it's getting five stars.
Random note: I want this to get an anime so badly. I mean, it doesn't necessarily NEED one, since it's not like being animated will enhance anything like it would in an action manga, but I still want an anime nonetheless. I feel like it's so good and quite popular in Japan that it's probably going to get one (knock on wood), which is something I can barely wait for. :D *EDIT 4* THE ANIME WAS ANNOUNCED ON 6/2/2018!!!!!!!!! IT'S HAPPENING!!!!! (Go to my volume 1 review for links to the announcement and the anime website.)
I also can't wait for (and really hope for) this series to become officially translated so that I can buy it and throw my money at the author. *EDIT 2* My incessant checking of the North American manga licensing list has finally paid off! Kaguya-sama: Love is War (that's the official English title that this manga is going to go by) HAS FINALLY BEEN OFFICIALLY LICENCED IN ENGLISH BY VIZ MEDIA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Get hyped for the release date (TBA)!!!! *EDIT 3* IT'S OUT RIGHT NOW!!!!!! And the next volumes are coming out right behind it!!
Please consider giving this review a "Like" if you've made it this far, it helps me out a lot! And follow me if you want more!

Found this one especially sweet and amusing. Definitely had some of my favorite "battles" in this one. I think some people might get annoyed with Kaguya and Miyuki by now, but I guess you could say I'm invested and it's just so cute and silly I must see how this all pans out.
I don’t know if I am the only one who feels this way, but it feels like the humour of the series is going away. This is what had me sold on the series too. I am still having a great time, but it’s not as good of a time that I was having earlier.
Once again, I am drawn to the idea of following our characters around as they deal with petty high school drama. Now, I am not one who longs to go back to high school, but just following them around as they go through their daily drama is very entertaining to me. The summer vacation bit about wanting to go somewhere and being around people you know hit me in all the right places. Even now, I find this to be very relatable. The idea of wanting to go and be a part of something, but unable to do so hit me in all the right places. I think, again, this is someething that the series does well. Even if you haven't experienced everything that the characters are going through, there is still something that you can latch onto.
The artwork, as I have said before, is pretty simple. However, it works for the story that the author is trying to tell. The emotions and actions of the characters are presented in a way that makes everything look and feel all that much more real. Again, this is something that draws me into the series. For me, manga art doesn’t have to be over the top. Sometimes the simpler style is better than the over the top. It fits.
The plot is pretty simple too. Although I did like getting to see the characters outside of school. It added to their characters and gave us a chance to see what they are like in a different environment. Plus, the desire and longing to see each other only added to the story. We see them time and time miss each, take measures to make some kind of connection, and see them cover up their feelings.
Overall, I am still having a great time with this series.
First she's on summer break but she so badly wants to reach out and talk to Miyuki. Miyuki has his own twitter, but of course they don't follow each other. Which stumbles into a hilarious issue of Kaguya bothering her maid to help set stuff up online. Then Kaguya gets so excited to spend time with friends and see fireworks but her parents are scumbags and won't let her, leading to a really pretty and emotional bit I enjoyed. Then we get back to school and it's back to fun times. The best one chapter though here goes to misunderstanding of Miyuki friend and his advances with his girlfriend and some funny as hell moments.
Overall this manga is a real delight to read even if a couple chapters aren't amazing.
It's summer vacation. And while Kaguya and Miyuki have shared their phone numbers, and potentially made plans, they both still refuse to be the first to make contact. They're essentially in the same position: miserable because the other person won't text them. We get a surprising amount of vulnerability in this volume. All Kaguya wants to do is see the fireworks with her friends, and yet her family turns out to be very strict regarding her whereabouts. Miyuki does something spur-of-the-moment for the first time, in an attempt to make her wish come true. It's very sweet, and should be a momentous occasion as they're actually honest about something with each other—but, of course, instead they end up worrying and regretting everything. After summer vacation, a new school year starts. They get new electives, and get to catch up with their classmates. Poor Chika gets tortured again, as Miyuki needs her help overcoming a weakness of his—and he admits that Chika is the only one he can show his weaknesses to. Though probably not in the way that Chika takes that statement. It looks like Miyuki's birthday is coming upon us, and it should be interesting how Kaguya decides to show affection while pretending she's superior. This is really a great series. I'm rather hooked now, and hope that they figure themselves out at some point. In the mean time, though, I enjoy discovering more out about Chika, and seeing how Yu gets scarred and insulted even more.
A review copy was provided by the publisher, VIZ Media, for an honest review. Thank you so, so much!
This is a review of the entire series up to this point, including some chapters of volume 6. The main trio of president Shirogane, secretary Fujiwara and whatever the hell Shinomiya does in the student council found its missing piece with treasurer Ishigami, a depressive realist with a vindictive streak; for example, when discussing with the president which club funds to decrease during the recession, Ishigami insisted in hurting the sports clubs, and even instituting a tax on happy couples, "because it's unfair that they are happy when I'm not". Despite his occasional bout of irrationality, he's a mild-mannered good guy, a genius with numbers, yet unambitious and more than a bit blind to social situations. He keeps stepping on social landmines in a council where some subjects simply shouldn't be brought up. Ishigami is deathly afraid of the titular Kaguya Shinomiya, who is the heir of a huge corporation; we are introduced to the treasurer as he tries to quit because he's convinced the girl will murder him soon. Shinomiya usually just resents how the treasurer brings up romantic subjects that she just doesn't want to address, but because the girl falls into anti-social moods and has the money and means to hire hitmen and get away with it, it's fairly rational for anyone to fear falling on her bad side. In any case, the treasurer is a perfect counterpart to the joyous, carefree secretary, while simultaneously a counterpart to both the president's and Shinomiya's pride and need to be seen as hyperfunctional.
The absurd situations that the council members go through keep making me grin and even laugh at times, and the idiosyncratic ways the main characters react to stuff keep everything fresh, even though I've already seen a couple dozen variations of Kaguya's face and her "o kawaii koto". They have grown quite a bit, and shown painful parts of their personality. For example, when the kaichou Shirogane .
Kaguya also grows some. She started out in the council as a brooding ice queen, but a year later she lets her precious colleagues in. Around 60 chapters into the series, she can barely recognize herself as she attempts to befriend Shirogane's cool little sister, or worries about celebrating the president's birthday properly. She's shown that under her façade of hyperfunctionality and nobility, she's a soft girl with an open wound after a lifelong lack of familiar love and guidance (when she goes out to watch a movie or buy clothes, we learn that she had never done any of it by herself), and wants to be able to tear down her own mental walls and freely enjoy the company of the people dearest to her. There's a particular sequence that elevated this series from a particularly good rom-com into a moving story: .
Regarding the anime adaptation, it's been a while since I watched it, but as I was reading the chapters I didn't recognize about 2/5 of the situations. As the characters grow, the situations get less episodic and carry some consequences, even mild. There's an instance in which Shinomiya .
In any case, it's great, clever, often surprising, endearing and wholesome. I'm following this trainwreck to its probably funny end.
Kaguya-sama: Love is War Volume 5 is another great continuation of this series, where Miyuki and Kaguya battle over who will confess to the other first. This is such a fun series! In all honesty these two would be so cute together, and would be together by now, if they would communicate - but then it wouldn't be as much fun for us. These two are so dramatic and adorable, and it's a blast watching what they get into. We got a closer look at Kaguya's life, and I really feel for her. I love the friendships in this series and enjoy watching as the characters and their relationships develop.
TLDR: I enjoyed this part and it has some 'payoff' for readers who have been reading the story for a little while. Of the 5 volumes, this one is probably my favorite and does an excellent job at pushing the story forward and developing our characters.
Longer Review: This volume is quite incredible. The reason for this is because of how well I think each character acts, and yet still remain perfectly in character. I credit the author a lot for being able to keep his characters tied to their own rules of how they should behave in certain situations. The opening 5 stories beautifully display exactly why it is that our characters are in their situations (of course I am speaking of our main characters: Kaguya and Miyuki). The author does a good job of having both the characters' strengths and weaknesses play out. The problems the characters face are due to their own weaknesses that they will need to overcome and the tools they attempt to use to overcome them are all of their own strengths (whether or not they succeed is for you to read the novel and found out!). I honestly thought that with how strong the opening 5 stories were, it would be unlikely that the latter half of the volume could compare. However, I still really enjoyed the second half. The stories still continue to show the development of each of the characters. The comedy is pretty good and, in the context of the story, it all makes sense. One other small note that I wanted to highlight was that I read some of the reviews that others left for this novel and others. I noticed that some had complaints about some of the main characters. Some that I saw were that Kaguya, Chika, or Shirogane were a bit unlikeable. However, I feel that if you took the time to read all 5 volumes up to this point that each character is likeable to some extent. While I may not love every moment that Chika comes in, I do feel she is a nice element for the story. In addition to this, while Kaguya and Shirogane seem cold, I do feel you can begin to understand their reasoning for making the decisions they do. This volume specifically helps to explain some of Kaguya's backstory. While it is not a fully fleshed out backstory, it does begin to give you an idea of why she is the way that she is. I keep saying it, but I genuinely believe this volume is the best one so far and I really enjoyed it. I would recommend this series to anyone thinking about trying out a manga series.
Back to the regular battles, the war of love between Kaguya and Miyuki continues even in the summer vacation. As was shown in the earlier volume, Chika sort of ruined the possibility of them using her to plan a summer event that would have them all meeting together. However, between their avoidance of taking the first step, and Kaguya's strict upbringing, the chance to hang out is nearly ruined. Then there was also the case of Miyuki's birthday and them dancing around the fact that Kaguya knows it, but can't say that she wants to plan a party for him. This volume has raised, for the first time, the issue of Kaguya's parents' presence in her life, and how much autonomy she is allowed. I also feel it sort of contradicted with the earliest volumes, where she did a lot of things on her own, without being barred by her bodyguards? Unrelated to their battles in love, there is a chapter just about Chika catching the eye of a gourmand when she goes straight for ramen after getting back from her vacation. It was entertaining, even if that character was being snobbish & dismissive about young girls. Overall, another good installment.
Received an advance reader copy in exchange for a fair review from Viz Media LLC, via Edelweiss.
I bought this volume since the anime's first season ended on a chapter in this. I love it! I binged the whole season on Netflix today and spent the rest of the day reading the manga so ... I guess you can say the story is pretty gripping haha. Also I usually hate the whole romance genre but for some reason this feels very different. It's more fun than it is lovey-dovey. The character arcs play out perfectly and not as per convenience. I love how well they show the growth of each person's feelings over time too. Nothing feels abrupt or out of character. I just hope they don't stretch the series for too long though because I'm really excited to know how it ends.
The ending was pretty cute with their misunderstandings about Shirogane's birthday- also I just love horoscopes even if I don't fully believe in all of it ♡ I think I understand why I'm having trouble getting behind this series in manga format- because I really enjoyed the anime- I just don't like the miscommunication trope if people are not communicating properly. I guess to me it feels like a waste of time- just say what you're thinking!- but that's also coming from a place where I'm at a different point in my life- and because the anime is so quick with it all, it doesn't feel the same.
I think this is where I'm going to stop reading the series- I think I'll just stick to the anime ^^
The yearning across summer vacation bursts forth, as Miyuki and Kaguya wish to spend time together, but neither can make the first move. Barriers get in their way, whether external or internal, and it's charming to see them overcome matters for the sweetest moments. There are also a number of humorous tales, including another Chika teaching Miyuki tale that the horror fan in me wishes got adapted. Loving this.
is it just me or do I find Fujiyama a more fun, interesting character than Kaguya? hehe 😸 ilove seeing her sweet and tough sides and If I were to become an anime character one day, I think Secretary Fujiyama (more than her blessed bossom, dancing prowess and the fact that we both can’t whistle) is closest to my personality the most.
This volume offers a real intense story. From a look at Kaguya's family life and the rules she is forced to live by. Wanting to just enjoy some time with her friends Kaguya is willing to break the rules if it means to enjoy the summer just a little bit. It shows the depths this series has to offer in the future.
