Friends forever. Chase Kipling and his twin brother Cade have been best friends with Katie since grade school. They hang out together all the time, riding horses, playing cards, going to movies and sporting events. A fun friendship for all three of them. Until a new guy in town mentions what a sexy woman she is. Chase sees red at the comment, how dare some guy lust after his best friend. Sure, she’s beautiful and sexy and has a great laugh… and now his eyes are opened and there’s no turning back.
Katie Jackson has known Chase since first grade, she’s had a crush on him since middle school, and loved him since, well, probably forever. But he’s got her firmly in the friend zone and she has no idea how to change that. Or if she even wants to risk changing it. After all friends is better than nothing. Isn’t it?
I started writing late in life. I've always been a reader, devouring Nancy Drew books in grade school right on through to today. But writing is new to me and I am having a blast.
I have four series, all small town contemporary romance.
My Lake Chelan series is centered around a remote town in eastern Washington and all the challenges and shenanigans that go on there. Many of the characters in that series are volunteer firefighters. My father was a volunteer firefighter and walking into a station still smells like home to me. So I am having a lot of fun incorporating my memories into new stories.
My Burlap and Barbed Wire series at this point is Colorado Cowboys all from one family of cattle ranchers living in the Rocky Mountains at the base of Rocky Mountain National Park. Writing a family of siblings finding love has been a lot of fun.
My Saddles and Secrets series code named Wyoming Wranglers is focused on a rescue ranch for geriatric horses. Someone is causing problems and the local sheriff dept. is trying to find the culprit.
My Helluva Engineer series is a nod to my alma mater. The mineral engineers journey across the mountains to help find the gold mine that has recently started contaminating the Rockin' K ranch. Why it's started having poisonous runoff after two hundred years of dormancy, is the real question.
All my books are stand alone so you don't have to read them all or even in order, although it might be more fun to do so.
Join with me as I tell my stories, weaving real tidbits from my life in with imaginary ones. You'll have to guess which is which. It will be a hoot!
I liked this friends-to-lovers romance. The plot was fun and the characters likable. I could really sympathize with Katie and her unrequited feelings for Chase. She has been crushing on one of her best friends forever and if you have ever been in that situation, you know it's not easy. Add in that turmoil you feel over the risk of a loosing a wonderful, tried and true friendship at the risk of a could it be love, and you have an emotional story that tugs at your heartstrings. A good read and a good addition to this series. This is my voluntary, honest review.
Tempting Chase is book three in this series. As with the two previous books in the series, the author does a good job pulling you into the story. This book was a bit different that the previous two because the majority of the book takes place in town since that is where Katie lives and works. This book ha a bit of suspense but nothing to eventful or angst. In fact, I enjoyed the light suspense aspect in this book very much.
Chase and his twin brother Cade have been friends with Katie since childhood. Their friendship has always been platonic and both brothers are protective of her. But there has never been any romantic feelings. That is until a comment made by another man, shines a new light on Katie where Chase is concerned. After twenty years of friendship, Chase is seeing Katie in a whole new light. Predictably, he doesn't know what to do with his new feelings. Katie has no problem showing him what to do. She has loved him for so long. When she finally makes the decision to "go fo it," Chase is not prepared. I loved watching these two together. I believed their attraction. The chemistry between Chase and Katie was scorching and when they finally acted on their attraction, it was perfect.
From that point on, the story moves very quickly. Chase will make some mistakes in which a lot of groveling is involved. I actually loved that part. The grand gestures from flawed heroes are some of my favorite aspects of romance novels and this one did not disappoint.
Without saying anything more, I will tell you that I truly liked this book. Chase has been one of many favorite characters from when we meet him in the first book. His twin brother Cade's book is going to be my next read and I can't wait to see how that one turns out.
This is my honest and unbiased review. Thank you for taking the time to read it. :)
Oh boy! Chase's story should be fun. Goodness, what happened at the dinner for the families before Alyssa and Beau's wedding? It is interesting to watch how far into the main storyline that each of these subsequent books picks up. Where does Katie work? How long has she known the Kipling family What do we learn about Cade, his girlfriend, and how Katie feels about her? The interlude with Katie, Summer, and Tim outside the church was fun. Oh, Mrs. Erickson is a hoot!!! Oh man, as Katie thinks about her life, I started to feel bad. Will Chase ever get his head out of his backside and wake up? What is it with the Kipling men freaking out about things? Oh my, who were the two drunk jerks and who were they looking to have some fun with? What wakes Katie up between 0330 and 0400? What does she learn in the morning when she goes to work? Who are Gwen, Tommy, Kevin, and Mary? How are they or do they get involved with this story?

This is the third book in this awesome series and is Katie and Chase’s story. Katie as well as Chase and his twin have been best friends since grade school, and Katie has always hid her feeling for Chase as he has her firmly placed in the friend zone. When somebody new arrives in town and takes an interest in Katie, this is a wakeup call for Chase, but is it too late to move on from friends / lovers? This is a well written story which is emotional, sweet, fun, and an all round entertaining read. I look forward to reading more from this talented author, whose work I highly recommend for all.
Chase and Katie were great characters. The story having Gwen in made it unique. The setting was in Colorado. I did, however, think the ending was very abrupt.
You have to love best friends to lovers book. Chase and his twin brother Cade have been friends with Katie for more than 20 years. Katie has yearned for more with Chase but until another man showed attention to Katie, Chase finally saw her as a woman. Katie is bound to make this relationship work or will it ruin their friendship forever.
Chase, Cade, and Katie have been best friends since they were kids. Thick as thieves these three are, but when one of Alyssa's brother mentions how attractive Katie is Chase is about to blow a gasket. Chase isn't sure what is going on he has always liked Katie, but now something more is brewing and when things start happening to her well he's about to show her she is more than just a best friend. For Katie, she has been in love with Chase for awhile just never moved on to the actions. The brothers have always been there for her and now they are more than ever. When she hires a young girl to help her in the store she has no idea her life is about to change. So is her relationship between her and Chase, they are finally falling in love, but will Chase run away before they ruin their friendship, or will they both take the leap?
I love me some good best friends to lovers romance and this did not disappoint. I love Katie and Chase together, their relationship blossomed to a heat level that made for an enjoyable read. Their journey was entertaining and a joy to read. I just love how each sibling has a unique story of love.
3 1/2* Chase & Katie have been best friends forever but can she get her wish? When Tim flirts with Katie chase doesn’t know how he feels or why he feels so upset? I voluntarily reviewed an advanced reader copy of this book

Saddle up for a swoony friends-to-lovers romance set against the backdrop of a small Colorado town filled with gorgeous cowboys.
Katie has been besties with Kipling twins Chase and Cade since forever, but she’s been crushing on Chase for the better part of ten years. She’s always wanted to try to take their relationship further, but is scared about stuffing up their friendship. Chase, on the other hand, is completely oblivious to Katie’s feelings, only seeing her as his best friend forever - together with Cade, they’re the three musketeers, always up for a horse ride, game of poker, or karaoke night at the bar. But when Tim Jefferson, his sister-in-law’s brother, visits and starts flirting with Katie and talking about how gorgeous she is, a switch is flipped for Chase and he’s hit with the realisation that his best friend if stunning and an attraction grows. When the window at her store is smashes and she spends the night a Rockin’ K Ranch, Katie senses a shift in Chase and decides to bite the bullet and tell him what she wants - him. They both want to take the jump, but in doing so, they risk changing a life-long friendship forever.
You had me at friends-to-lovers! As with the previous two books in this series, Shirley’s writing has such a great way of pulling you into the story and into the lives of the Kipling family. And while this book didn’t take place at Rockin’ K as much, therefore we didn’t see a lot of the rest of the family, we did get to see more of town life, which was had slowly been introduced to in the first two books. So while I’m bummed we didn’t really get to see much of Beau & Alyssa and Adam & Rachel and the continuation of their stories, it was nice to flesh out this world more.
Katie is such a fun character and I really enjoyed seeing her friendship with the twins and how her and Chase moved their friendship into a romance. Friends-to-lovers is one of my favourite tropes, and this one just felt so natural - you could feel how strong their friendship was and why they were both reluctant to change that in the hope that a romantic relationship would work. There wasn’t a lot of angst or roadblocks with this couple, other than the underlying mystery in the story, so it was refreshing to have a romance on the lighter sider where the only real struggle was the leap to take the risk of turning a friendship into a romance.
As with the previous books, Shirley wove in an underlying mystery amongst the main romance, although this mystery was tied a lot more closely to the characters than what we saw in the previous two books. It adds a nice layer of depth to the story and this world, making it more than just a simple small-town cowboy romance. I’m excited to see what interesting subplot Shirley weaves into the rest of the series.
I seriously CANNOT get enough of ranch life in Colorado and the Kipling family, and even though there are still three books to go in this series, I don’t want to say goodbye to what has become one of my favourite romance families!
Is your bag packed for Colorado yet? Because it’s time to go find a ranch full of swoony cowboys! Get your yeehaw on and dive into this must-read cowboy romance series.
3.5 Stars Big fan of Author Shirley Penik and this Series. She's given us a look into the area the story is set along with a way of life. Her imaginary and attention to detail are always fascinating.
Chase is the current Kipling we watch fall in love. He and his twin brother have been 2\3 of the Three Musketeers. But an innocent comment has left Chase with some odd feelings being experienced about his best friend Katie.
Katie has silently stood by with hidden desires for Chase. But no more. She's going to let him and the entire town know just what she wants...Chase.
Sweet storyline. Author gives us a couple with old fashioned feeling, a slow and steady burn. Strictly this reader's thoughts...but I felt couple was a bit formal in their language considering their history and present day. However, solid writing and story.
Ha! I liked this book better than the last one and I liked both characters a lot. The from-friends-to lovers- plot made it a fun read. I do thought that the endig was again a bit abrupt, just like the previous book. Will continue with the 4th book and as that one is about Cade I expect both Chase and Katie will make enough appearances.
Before I re-read this one I wondered why I only gave it two stars for my rating. Now I remember. It was the brothers who attacked Katie. When she saw them in prison they were presented as hard-done-by people... they had the audacity to say they were sorry for 'taking advantage' of women. They intended to rape her. Had they raped anyone else? Cos they had warrants from several other places... so, this could've been a 1 star for me... but I did like Katie & Chase.
