A bewildered teenager rejects his parents and the suburban world they inhabit by attempting to retreat to his own dream world. He searches for a forest with a cave where he can prove his manhood, but there are no forests in suburbia and the only "cave" he finds is a junked car. His escape is not complete, for the world intrudes — Julia, a retarded girl who tags after him; Cornelius, the one-eyed cat; and a strange blind man.
