About the author

Kelley Armstrong has been telling stories since before she could write. Her earliest written efforts were disastrous. If asked for a story about girls and dolls, hers would invariably feature undead girls and evil dolls, much to her teachers' dismay. All efforts to make her produce "normal" stories failed.

Today, she continues to spin tales of ghosts and demons and werewolves, while safely locked away in her basement writing dungeon. She's the author of the NYT-bestselling "Women of the Otherworld" paranormal suspense series and "Darkest Powers" young adult urban fantasy trilogy, as well as the Nadia Stafford crime series. Armstrong lives in southwestern Ontario with her husband, kids and far too many pets.

Fans of Kelley Armstong’s recently ended but fabulous Cainsville series will accept any crumb from the Cainsville table. In Rough Justice we have a tasty, rich, heavily iced cupcake. A cupcake, not a cake because this is a novella.
Olivia is on her first Wild Hunt (Cŵn Annwn) serving as the Malit-y-Nos, Matilda of the Hunt. The Wild Hunt secures justice for the fae by having their hounds harvest souls of those humans who have killed fae but escaped justice in the human world.
However Olivia being Olivia has questions about the guilt of this target.
So Olivia will do what Olivia does best and will want to investigate, therefore derailing her and Ricky’s first Hunt as Annwn, King of the Otherworld.
Ricky being Ricky will do what he always does and support anything Olivia does. He is not a major character in Rough Justice as this is mostly Olivia showing her chops during an increasingly tricky investigation.
Gabriel being Gabriel will do what he always does and hide something from Olivia. For her own good of course. He will be at her side throughout her investigation. Gabriel is still not comfortable as Gwyn ap Nudd, king of the TylwythTeg, the fae.
The Cainsville magic is present as always in Armstrong’s books. Delighting and charming the reader; enticing us into the world of the fae and Cŵn Annwn.
. The story is terrific, Cainsville great, the Cŵn Annwn thrilling; but reading about Olivia, Gabriel and Ricky is the ultimate treat.
Armstrong excels in her endings. The ending for Rituals was one of the best I have ever read, lovely and touching. The ending for Rough Justice is extremely satisfying too, but still leaves readers wanting more. Much more.
The hardcover of Rough Justice is featuring illustrations by Xaviere Daumaire , judging by his covers, they are beautiful.

"An eye for an eye seems all well and good until everyone's blind."

I love when authors flesh out their series with novellas ... as if we needed any more proof they're just as addicted to their characters and worlds as we are. And it's already a given that I'll read anything Kelley Armstrong cranks out, so even though the Cainsville series has always had its highs and lows for me, I was more than happy for even a brief glimpse back into the lives of our favorite fated trio.

This novella takes place not long after the action-packed and fulfilling conclusion of Rituals, where Olivia has decided to finally embrace her destiny to choose between the Tylwyth Teg (the Fae) and the Cŵn Annwn (the Wild Hunt)—and in turn, to choose between Gabriel and Ricky. Her choice? To not choose. It may have been a bit of a predictable out, but I did love the way it wrapped up the series and opened the door to a powerful new dynamic between the two communities. I was so curious how Liv would balance her divided loyalties and what her acceptance of her role would mean ... and that's exactly what Armstrong delivers in this short but satisfying novella, where Liv steps up to participate in her first ever Hunt.

The dark lore surrounding the Cŵn Annwn is fascinating. "[T]asked with wreaking vengeance on humans who murder those with fae blood," part of their powers is an innate ability to sense guilt. Liv struggles to accept how they can immediately condemn a man to death outside of the confines of courtroom justice. It's such a unique backdrop for a mystery. We're told the who from the very start, but Liv wants the proof, which spawns an investigation of her own. The more clues she unveils, the less likely it seems that the who could possibly be correct. It feels like you're trying to piece together the puzzle with just one piece you know is right, but somehow that's the one piece hat refuses to fit. The result is a wonderfully layered mystery that's surprisingly intricate for a novella, and it certainly kept me on my toes.

This is very much Liv's tale, and I loved watching her maneuver the backwards investigation. She's just as strong, witty, and independent as ever, which makes her perspective a joy to read. We also see a lot of Gabriel's character through his role in the investigation, his maturing relationship with Liv, and his complications with his mother. My only gripe? I wish there was a lot more of Ricky in this installment ... I miss what a powerhouse team the trio proved to be in prior novels.

There's only so much that can fit into a novella under 200 pages, but Armstrong does a stellar job as always at packing it full of character development and a complex plot. Rough Justice is a blast, and it makes me want even more stories about Liv, Gabriel, and Ricky navigating their new normal. If you're a fan of urban fantasies laced with mystery, you'll definitely want to give this series a shot!

I was surprised and delighted to see ROUGH JUSTICE, a new novella in the Cainsville series, which I thought had ended with Rituals. Getting a new, although short, story about Olivia Taylor-Jones and Gabriel is a dream come true because I have truly enjoyed all of the books in this series.

As per usual, Kelley Armstrong is fabulous.

I really liked Rough Justice, and it was so much fun to get back into Cainesville. My biggest hope is that Armstrong keeps giving us these novellas (and maybe another novel?!?!?!?) because I will buy and/or read anything that she puts out!

Like the blurb says, RJ picks up with Liv, Gabriel, and Ricky after the events of Rituals. By this point, the trio has been balancing in their new dynamic for the last six months. Since she's agreed to try and find a way to support both the Cwn and the Tylweth Teg, Liv has to go on her first official hunt to mete out the Cwn's justice- albeit it swift, rough, and uncompromising.

However, Liv wouldn't be Liv without asking some questions. When she can't blindly follow the huntsmen's verdict, she and Gabriel get involved in an investigation to find out if the intended victim has truly earned the justice of the hunt.

Fans of Ricky should dig into Rough Justice- even though our glimpses of Ricky are very brief, there's something beautiful in the way that he starts to develop his role in the hunt. There's a lot of potential here for him to keep growing into his role as Arawn, and I'm hoping that there's some further development on the horizon for him. Fair warning- Ricky doesn't get a lot of page time, but I'd still count RJ as a "must-read" for lovers of the series.

Fans of Liv and Gabriel will love Rough Justice. Armstrong delivers scenes from both perspectives, so we get that multi-faceted view of their world, and their relationship, that is one of my favorite parts of this series. Even after six months, the pair is still learning how to function as a romantic couple, and I love that Armstrong stays true to their personalities (and especially Gabriel's history).

They make progress in how they relate to and communicate with each other, but it's a realistic progression, one that's believable and as amusing as always. I think that she does character growth very well, and it's wonderful to see Liv and Gabriel get to know each other more intimately as they continue to figure out what the other needs and how to give it to them. Not to mention, there's a lovely scene at the end that had me cheering (I've been on team Gabriel since the first novel).

Minor spoilers (depending on how sensitive you are)...
Rough Justice also shows that the series has such magnificent potential even though some major events are "closed" by Rituals. Armstrong leaves openings for further stories, and I really hope that she takes advantage of them. With new issues on the rise with Rose, Seanna, and Liv's developing place as a shared Matilda, I don't see how any fan could stop from wanting more.

In my review of Rituals I said that it was everything I had hoped for - that it had everything I love about the Cainsville series. Still, if there's one thing I was missing in Rituals, it was Olivia and Gabriel investigating a mystery together. So, I am incredibly happy and satisfied with this novella because it had that again - and what a mystery it was! It also added more info to how the Hunt works, and what Olivia's choice means for her life after Rituals. And of course, it had Olivia and Gabriel... so much Olivia and Gabriel (which really would have been enough to make me happy all on its own). I love how their relationship seems to be progressing, but how - the characters being who they are (yes, I'm looking at you Gabriel!) - they still have things they need to work on (communication!). Their relationship is still fascinating to read about, and I'm already looking forward to another novella next year. Rough Justice has definitely satisfied some of my lingering curiosity about certain threads left open at the end of Rituals, and it was a real treat to get to read about these characters again.

A short story, 5.5 in the Cainsville urban fantasy series based in and around Chicago and revolving around Olivia and her first Wild Hunt.

My Take
How lovely to have another Cainsville novel to read! Especially one that shows us what Olivia, Gabriel, and Rick are doing now, six months after Olivia and Gabriel moved in together.

"'Our cloaking devices,' Ricky said, shaking his out. 'Appropriately in the form of an actual cloak.'"

It's a mix of first person protagonist point-of-view from Olivia's perspective and a third person simple subjective point-of-view from Gabriel's. The combination worked, although Olivia's thoughts become so annoying, as she wrestles with if the target is actually guilty. She "knows" the Cŵn Annwn are infallible, but she doesn't know, and it sticks in her craw. And her whining on and on and on sticks in mine!

Gabriel has evolved from the person he first was in Omens , 1, and has become more concerned about others…okay, about Olivia, if she will stay with him, if he has a chance. He's also learning to be more discerning about his cases, that he has enough money to pick and choose. That boy does have his hoarding issues. And quite rightly.

The primary conflict is Olivia’s lack of faith in the Wild Hunt’s choice of target, and it’ll take Olivia pursuing the truth in her own way before she can accept the faith the Cŵn Annwn have in their judgments. Gabriel’s issues with his mother and his keeping those secrets is a secondary problem, which points up communication as an underlying theme, as Gabriel, Olivia, and Rose each harbor their own secrets, holding them back to protect the others. Another is Gabriel’s worries about their life together with too much that is his view, her house, and Gabriel wants, no, he needs reassurances.

Huh. There's an interesting point Olivia makes about her adoptive mother, and it is not a good one. As for Gabriel's mother … I don't want her memories suppressed. I want her to experience them and realize how awful she'd been.

Then that ending. The one half was a shocker that made an awful sense while the other was so sweet and a practical answer to Gabriel's fears.

The Story
Having accepted her role as Matilda, Olivia has turned tradition on its head, refusing to make the same mistake as that original Matilda. The only problem is that it does leave both sides of the fae weaker.

Liv is determined she can compensate, and this Hunt, her first, seems easy enough. She knows that the Cŵn Annwn know when someone is deserving of their rough justice

But Olivia is not one who trusts so easily, and her doubt prevents the hounds from meting out that justice.

The Characters
Olivia Taylor-Jones, adopted daughter of a department store mogul and the birth daughter of serial killers, is now living with Gabriel Walsh, a highly successful defense lawyer and the Gwynn to Liv's Matilda of the Hunt.

Olivia works as his investigator. Lydia is Gabriel’s very efficient secretary. Bryant is Lydia's grandson, a student at Caltech.

The Cŵn Annwn are…
…the Welsh Wild hunt, tasked with delivering justice on humans who murder any with fae blood. A cŵn is a hound. Ioan (John) is the leader of the local Hunt and heads up Gwylio Consulting, a security firm. Brenin is his alpha hound. The Huntsmen all work for Gwylio and include Aeron (Aaron). Rhyddhad is the fae horse Olivia rides.

Ricky Gallagher is the gorgeous heir of local Satan’s Saints gang leader and grandson of Ioan, with an MBA in finance, who rides Tywysog Du in the Hunt. His other side is Arawn, Lord of the Otherworld and king of the Cŵn Annwn. Today, he'd been Liv's lover and now her best friend. Lloergan “Lloe” is a fae hound who had been badly treated and whom Ricky saved ( Betrayals , 4).

Cainsville is…
…a sleepy little town outside Chicago populated and run by the Tylwyth Teg. The Carew House is now Liv’s house. Ida was a fae elder and the leader of Cainsville who had sacrificed herself. Patrick is a romance writer, a bòcan, and Gabriel’s father. Grace is a bogart and rents out apartments, but it’s really a fae nursing home, one where Seanna Walsh, Gabriel's waste of a mother who arranged her own death fifteen years ago, is being cared for. Great-aunt Rose Walsh has the Sight and desperately wants Gabriel to find closure with his mother. Larry runs the diner.

Keith Johnson, an Audi car salesman, is the target of the hunt. Kathy had been his wife. Alan Nansen opened a successful restaurant, Eclipse, that is not doing well. Heather Nansen is his wealthy wife who put most of her trust into his enterprise.

Amy Keating is a new assistant state's attorney. Pamela is Liv's birth mother. Monica LaSalle had been the nastiest girl in Liv's debutante class.

In the distant past…
…Mallt-y-Nos, Matilda of the Hunt, Matilda of the Night, was a half-Tylwyth Teg, half-Cŵn Annwn woman in the very distant past who made some bad choices, and the fae on both sides have paid the price. Arawn and Gwynn were the princes, one from each side, with whom Matilda had been friends for years before she fell in love with Gwynn ap Nudd, king of the fae. In another incarnation, Calum was a boy from a village and Matilda's dearest friend. Hamish was that Matilda's cousin.

The Cover and Title
The cover has a cartoon quality to it. In fact I thought this would be a graphic novel, instead it's Olivia in a deep mossy green cloak, presenting a three-quarter profile, her pale face tilted and looking out from the hood, her blonde hair swinging away, in her persona as Mallt-y-Nos, the power of the Wild Hunt. The background appears to be old parchment but is a very blurred landscape of trees and riders on horses. In the forefront on the left is one of the Hunters astride his galloping horse with hooves, mane, and eyes a'flame, leading a thundering herd of similar figures. The author's name is at the top in a serif black with the title in the same cloak green behind Olivia's head.

The title is what the Wild Hunt metes out, Rough Justice.

I love that Kelley Armstrong writes novellas for her finished ("finished"?) series and of course I was glad to see more Olivia/Gabriel, however a couple of things about how the Hunt determines guilt bothered me. If you kill someone in battle, you're not guilty because that person signed up for battle. But if you kill someone in a drug fueled rage, you're guilty because you made the choice to take drugs. But addiction exists. It is not always quite a choice. And if you kill someone due to a mental illness and sought help . . . you're not guilty. But mental illness makes it so hard to seek out help. If you couldn't seek out help, are you guilty? This was just one or two paragraphs in the book, but it bothered me.

Rough Justice is a Cainsville novella and must be read after book 5 (Rituals).

This book takes place after the final Cainsville book. And it includes spoilers from that book.

The narrators are Olivia (1st person POV ) and Gabriel (3rd person POV).

I really loved getting to see Olivia, Gabriel and Ricky again. This book is a lot more than a short story. It is an almost 200 page novella and it really goes into detail about a case Olivia and Gabriel are working on.

I loved the investigation part of this book. I loved the Cainsville part of this book. What a loved a bit less was the hunt part of the book.

I loved seeing Olivia with Gabriel. I loved seeing some of the supporting characters like Rose and Patrick. However, I wish that there had been less of Olivia as Matilda and more of Cainsville. But overall it was such a great addition to this series.

It's lovely to get another, novella-length story about the Cainsville crew, after the official completion of their series arc in Rituals. In this story, Olivia participates in her first Wild Hunt, which doesn't go exactly as planned. There's a mystery to investigate, and some space to see how the characters are growing and adapting to their new roles in the world and in each others' lives.

Ahoy there me mateys! I received this urban fantasy eARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. So here be me honest musings . . .

The cover drew me in and three things convinced me to read this book:

1. I love Kelley Armstrong! I discovered her through her young adult book, sea of shadows, and she became me most read author of 2016;
2. It is a Subterranean Press book and they do great work; and
3. This story is set in the Cainsville series.

I am not really an urban fantasy fan so I have been hesitant to pick up the first novel in this series despite me love of the author. So when I realized I could read a novella set in the world I was rather excited. It gave me a taste of what Kelley Armstrong can do with urban fantasy.

And what she can do is write a very compelling novella. This apparently is #5.5 in the series. Yet it didn't take long at all for me to get the gist of what had happened previously. I rather enjoyed the main character Olivia. She is fiercely intelligent, enterprising, and entertaining.

The premise is that Olivia has to lead her first Hunt. Yet despite the assurances that her prey is guilty and deserves death, Olivia hesitates and the man gets away. Olivia is horribly upset with herself and resolves to investigate her target in detail in order to solidify his guilt to her satisfaction.

I thought the plot elements of the murder that was committed and how the investigation was handled were wonderfully fun. I enjoyed Olivia's love interest and the snippets into the workings of their relationship. Despite being personally burnt out on fae stories, the fae elements of this one didn't detract from the story. I was pleased to enjoy this as much as I did. It is a testament to the author's writing skills.

I could totally see meself picking up the first novel of the series. If ye already be a fan of the Cainsville series then this will surely be a hit!

REREAD 2021

I had honestly forgotten almost everything about this book. I remembered one of the storylines, which seemed to be the minor one, and somehow I felt it wasn't resolved as well this time around? I'm not sure how that would work, though, as the book isn't any different. Maybe I had trouble keeping up because of my eye issues? Anyway, it's not important. I'm keeping the original rating, and don't really have anything new to say about it.
Maybe just that I'm glad Rose was finally brought into the loop.

I know the author say these books count as shorter stories, not full length novels, but I still have trouble agreeing with that. They're not far from 50k words, after all. Not with that length.

Anyway, as usual, Armstrong's writing is light and flowing, easily sucking me in. Her characters are well written and their interaction is good.
I will admit that I was... not surprised, but taken aback, maybe? by the way she write dialogue. It isn't wrong, it just takes a little getting used to.

The story in this book started out really interesting, but kinda slow, and the slow continued throughout the book. As well there just being a general mystery, and not much magic. Again, it wasn't bad, just not what I hoped for.

It's not the strongest book in the series, but it still wasn't bad, and I can picture myself giving it a reread at some later date.

Superb Cainsville Novella

Olivia, Gabriel and Ricky are on the hunt for justice, but a few hiccups are in Olivia's way, as she doesn't have the certainty about their murdering quarry as Ricky and the Cwn Arrwan do. So she and Gabriel investigate the murder the HUNT has been called to deal justice on.

First I adore the murder mystery side of the Cainsville books. In fact Armstrong when it comes to murder mystery is as good as a writer a J.D. Robb, albeit with a few paranormal twists. I truly hope Armstrong keeps writing either novellas or full books as the murder/mystery world of Cainsville and the Huntsman has so many potential stories, that only Armstrong could do justice too.

Second Olivia and Gabriel explore their relationship and I am thrilled to report that love has not made them stupid or smooshy, and they are both still pig headed stubborn. They both give great bicker! LOL

A great continuation of the Cainsville series. I liked seeing how Liv's decision from the previous novels is working regarding her continued relationships with Gabriel and Ricky. In Rough Justice, Liv has to confront her feelings regarding her first hunt as Mallt-y-Nos, Matilda of the Hunt. She delves into the concept of guilt as viewed by the Cŵn, specific as to whether Keith Johnson is truly guilty but also how and when the Cŵn determine guilt. With Gabriel's help, she looks into what actually happened between Johnson and the Nansens and there are a lot of surprising twists to what they uncover.

Gabriel is true to character, but Liv knows him well enough to help him learn to trust her more by talking about what he's feeling, thus allowing their relationship to grow. Additionally, Gabriel has to face conflicting developments with Seanna and Rose.

While Ricky doesn't play a large part in this particular novella, we see how he approaches his first hunt as Arawn, Lord of the Otherworld and legendary king of the Cŵn Annwn.

Kelley Armstrong is an amazing author and I look forward to everything she writes. Rough Justice is just one more example of how she presents characters and situations that grab your attention and keep you interested throughout. I'm looking forward to further developments in this series and hope there are many more short stories and/or novellas to follow.

It was great to visit Gabriel and Olivia again if only for a short while. Olivia is on her first hunt but she is not sure the intended target ia indeed guilty of the crime they accuse him of. The Hunt allow her to investigate further before they mete out justice. In the process she solves another crime as well. It was great getting Gabriel's point of view as well, I've always liked him best.

Rough Justice is a nice little follow on to the Cainsville series. It has just enough of all the elements of the series - the Fae in the form of the Wild Hunt, visions, Liv, Ricky and Gabriel - all wrapped up in a case for Liv to solve when her first Hunt leaves her with doubts about the guilt of the hunted. I really enjoyed returning to the world and seeing life after Liv's big decision, this short worked so well that I would love to see future installments.

This is a novella that takes place after the fifth and final Cainsville novel. I loved this continuation of the Cainsville series. It was wonderful to be able to go back and re-visit all these characters that I know and love. It was a great story and I liked seeing how everyone had adjusted to their new positions in the Hunt.

We get to see how Olivia, Gabriel, and Ricky are making their interesting situation work to their advantage. We also see how Liv struggles with the Hunt and letting the Hunt decide who is guilty and innocent.

This book focuses around a man who the Hunt thinks is guilty but Liv feels may not be guilty. Liv and Gabriel work to find out the true story behind why the Hunt chose this man to eliminate.

Overall this was a wonderful addition to the Cainsville series. I absolutely adored the Cainsville series and was so excited to get a little bit more of it. Highly recommended to fans of the Cainsville series. I wouldn’t necessarily recommend this as a stand alone; there is just too much background missing.
