Njegova umetnost bila je nova, neubičajena i neshvaćena. Kle, Maljevič, Matis, Modrijan, a naročito Pikaso - izričito se pozivaju na njegovo delo.
Edicija Geniji umetnosti (dvanaest knjiga po 160 strana u punom koloru) predstavlja dvanaest vrhunskih svetskih slikara u periodu od 13. do 20. veka: Đoto, Leonardo, Mikelanđelo, Rafael, Karavađo, Vela skez, Rembrant, Goja, Sezan, Mone, Renoar, Van Gog.
Knjige sadrže: detaljan prikaz života i stvaranja umetnika, izbor najvažnijih dela sa njihovim opisima, mesta gde se dela mogu videti (muzeji, galerije, privatne kolekcije…), antologiju kritike koja omogućava bolje razumevanje dela koja su pred nama.
Cezanne is a very well-known painter, so I thought I should find out why. Unfortunately this book doesn't help very much to reveal the answer, opting instead for platitudes and vague descriptions. For instance, he apparently used his painting to "counter the vicissitudes of life, the turbulence of emotions", to "introduce order into the chaos of existence", and "capture the innermost essence of things." ...what are you talking about??
There was some discussion of his "grammar of visual construction" and his innovative use of perspective, for instance by incorporating multiple angles in still-life paintings, and how this was "based on the sensibility of the artist" rather than the "rational constructions of linear perspective"... but why is that special or important? To me it just looks like he wasn't very good at getting the angles right!
I liked the set-up of this book. I enjoyed learning about the paintings in the context of what Cezanne was focusing on at the time. I also enjoyed the inclusion of his experiences with and impacts on his contemporaries.
Nicely presented book about the artist Paul Cézanne. Contains information about his life and times as well as full colour illustrations of some of his work including close up details.
