A human-alien hybrid goes looking for their birth parents. It's the subtlety and world-building details I liked best about this: how early AIs are programmed to respond in ways that will pacify humans; that the narrator can't get a full log of their DNA because most sequences are shared with others; the little ways that prejudice can creep into a life.

This short story was first published as part of Future Tense, a series of short stories about how technology and science will change our lives. The series is a collaboration among Arizona State University, New America, Slate, and ASU’s Center for Science and the Imagination. The series features many prominent science fiction author, including some of my favorites. I had not read anything by Meg Elison, and I was quite curious as a result to read this story.
It turns out that the UC Berkeley graduate author is an excellent writer: in particular I loved her writing style and her world building. I am looking forward reading more by this author.
The story is set in a near future where an alien race has made contacts with human. As a result of this contact a lot of mixed race children are born... and unfortunately surrendered by their parents. This is the story of one of this kids, as her past catch up with her.

An adoptee and alien-human hybrid tries to find her birth parents and, more importantly, she feels this information will tell her something profound about who she is. I liked the premise and some of the ethical issues brought up were interesting. In this story the protagonist could not have full access to her DNA because it would violate the privacy of others who share DNA with her. I feel the story could have done more in terms of exploring "mixed race identities" and it re-inscribed the narrative that to be mixed is to not know one's self. It is still worth the read.
