Unseen

Rate this book
Unseen is a work of literary social commentary written as a modern psychological thriller. When a small town Deputy Sheriff sets his sights on seducing the local forensic DNA analyst, he unwittingly stumbles upon an underground child pornography ring. What follows is a tangled web of deceit and irrational justification wrapped around a corrupt Child Protective Services division, the internal rationale of pedophiles and the long-term effects of child sexual abuse and narcissistic personalities. While exploring issues of parental rights, societal responsibilities, police brutality and American rape culture, Unseen balances suspense, intrigue and humor along with sharp wit and southern charm.

Three years ago Sam ‘Butch’ White returned to his home town of Layton, South Carolina to help take care of his little sister and two-year old niece. With a keen understanding of body language and the confident swagger of a true alpha (or was that asshole?), Butch sets his sights on the pretty blond who refuses to rush his DNA requests or be affected by his blatant flirtations.

Anna Gills is a college student on summer break trying to hide an ongoing affair with her college professor. While giving respite to one of her regular charges in foster care, Anna notices some disturbing behavior while the girl plays in her room. When the apathy of one organization pushes her into the ineffectiveness of another, she finds her world and family crumbling around her as she struggles to do right by both her charge, her lover and her mother.

Mara McNeil is an eight-year-old girl on vacation with her family for the Fourth of July holiday. Immediately drawn to her charming uncle, the girl must face growing up in a world that values her silence more than her truth. Strong willed and determined to find her own voice, she struggles to take control over her life again in any way she can.

Unseen is a fully stand-alone novel, but fits into the larger Layton, SC universe. It immediately follows the events of Off Limits.

All the endorsements by actual FBI agents who have dealt with these kinds of cases, plus the author's first book which I loved, is what convinced me to read this one despite not reading many psychological thrillers. I'm glad I did! I felt like the author was very respectful of the subject matter while still thoroughly delving into the social issues of rape culture and its many ramifications. There are no explicit attacks or descriptions--this is not torture porn, nor does it use gore and creep tactics to get a cheap rise out of the reader. The book covers the issue thoroughly both academically and emotionally while still--somehow--maintaining enough humor to make me laugh out loud regularly. Such an emotional roller coaster!

Book 3 needed now!

The writing in both Off limits and this Unseen is amazing. This has romance, mystery, and some serious issues that may be disturbing. Off limits was about Chris and Anna in which this story continues with them along with the other stuff. Please keep up with this series I need more of Chris and Anna! Highly recommend this series.
