While definitely a young person's science book, I found this book very clear. It gives an excellent and simple description (with good illustrations) of the dynamics of waves. It has a great map of ocean currents and a good explanation of the relationship between currents and deserts. If you're looking for information on waves and how they work, I think for non-scientists this book is wide-ranging, comprehensible, and genuinely helpful.
