Book blurb: “Darcy and Bingley receive an early lesson on their place in Meryton society. The course of their stay and their relationships with the people of Meryton change as they do.”

74 [short] chapters: Rating: clean, although light profanity: This was posted as finished or complete… however, the last chapter still left a mild cliffhanger or at least questions unanswered about what happened with certain characters to be answered in the sequel.

The story moved quickly with smooth transitions in spite of terrible editing. There were way too many missing words, pronouns, articles, and such. It made for strange sentences. The author stated it would be edited later; however, this was posted in late 2017 and it still has not been corrected. Strategic places were misspelled such as Derbyshire. It was spelled correctly in the first of the story; however, by chapter 18 and beyond, was posted as Darbyshire. There were also modern words [which the author acknowledged] that jarred the reader and pulled from the story.

The author described this as an AU [alternate universe]. The reader should be prepared for OOC [out of character] behavior as the story ventures from canon. At the assembly, Bingley was being pushy in his attempt to get Darcy to dance. He completely ignored or overlooked the fact that Darcy was not feeling well. The reason behind that was revealed and completely hilarious. In his trying to dismiss Bingley, Darcy commits his insult to Miss Bennet’s sister. The room suddenly went silent because everyone standing around Darcy and Bingley heard his insult.

Elizabeth knew she needed to address the situation immediately or her reputation would suffer and the standing of the newcomer would be over. This also sets the tone of the story. Elizabeth stood, walked toward the arrogant man, and stopped right in from of him. She took him to task in gentle but clear words that even he could understand and loud enough for everyone to hear. This put them on the right foot and the rest of the story traveled a different path from canon. I loved this friendship between Darcy and Elizabeth.

Georgiana: she arrived and was so sweet, I just loved her relationship with Jane, Lizzy, and Mary. I also loved our dear Colonel as he was pivotal in solving many of the problems our characters had to deal with. His military prowess was amazing and he was the man to get it done. What a guy.

Mr. Bennet: “A man who views the world the same at fifty as he did at twenty has wasted thirty years of his life.” –Muhammad Ali

Our dear Mr. B received a reality check that changed his life forever. He reordered his finances and holdings, and for once in his married life, thought seriously about the prospects of his wife and daughters should he die suddenly. He finally saw the importance of creating a will. With help from Philips, Gardiner, and Darcy, he created an inventory of all his holdings, everything inside Longbourn Manor, and the outside properties. They listed everything that was entailed to Collins and what would be considered personal property or anything purchased above the entail with personal monies not designated to go to Collins [ex: Mr. Bennet’s books and port].

Lydia: it always starts with her… the silly, foolish girl set something in motion that was extremely dangerous and near-fatal. It completely blindsided Mr. Bennet and he finally realized he needed to address the behavior of his youngest daughters. Kitty and Lydia never knew what hit them as their lives took a complete detour. Enter Miss York… their governess.

Villains: We got villains… OMG! Do we ever have villains? … enter stage left:

Wickham: only a low-life SBRB [scum-bag-rat-bastard] would fight with girls and a young boy. However, they fought back and marked him for life. When he ran, his mistake was, as usual, in picking the wrong horse… not to bet on, but to ride. Our dear Colonel had given the ornery house an appropriate name… Satan.

Caroline: What a harridan, she was everything Darcy despised in London ton. She certainly was no lady, although we now have to call her Lady. She was a nightmare… Bingley’s nightmare.

Lady Catherine: after receiving a message from Collins, she stormed Longbourn [during a party], and insulted everyone in the house and the community. When she finally worked her way around the room and insulted Elizabeth, she was quickly met with a fiery set-down from Mrs. Bennet. Oh, that was so good.

Collins: slimy, toad-eating [make that mince pie], maggot… or as one of our guys called him… a worm. What an idiot. Her Ladyship was his idea of perfection and he was at her service… willing to do her every command and she wanted him to… oh, I can’t say.

Lord Matlock: he simply could not understand why he could not push Darcy into compliance, nor force him to bend to his will. He also learned he should not insult Miss Elizabeth in Darcy’s presence. That did not go over well. Darcy’s axiom: If you use brute force; you will receive brute force. That was fun. Then his lordship set in motion plans that were simply diabolical. When Darcy learned of the Earl’s plans, he had to call in the big guns. The only way to trump an earl is to use a duke.

Man… this story was chock full of villains of varying degrees. The pages were full of shock and awe as we were presented with the evil machinations of these crazy people. Some of the schemes I’ve never seen before. Some received their just deserts and other threads seemed to be left hanging at the end… several questions about them were left unanswered.

The sequel [104 chapters] to this is written from Miss York’s [the governess] point of view. “Miss York’s Match” https://www.fanfiction.net/s/12710750...

This action packed story, leans more towards the thriller than the romantic genre.

Enters at the night of the Meryton assembly.
The insult was made but Elizabeth retaliated, changing the course off canon.
ODC's understanding came early but there was a lot of trouble ahead.
An irate Caroline attacks Darcy in was barely recovered when Wickham attacked Georgiana and Elizabeth. Lady Catherine and mr Collins created a debacle but they where outdone by the Earl of Matlock.
The Bennet's in general redeemed themselves compared to canon in various degrees. Even Mrs Bennet has her moments of fame. The villains was dealt with in a satisfying manner.
Ends in ODC's marriage and oncludes a HEA for Jane and Mary.
The story has a companion story in the eyes of the young Bennet's governess "Miss York's Match". Eloborate some of the events in this story i addition to continue beyond.

I have read this story before and liked it better the first time. 3.5* rounded up to 4.

This is a chaste read.

I’ve read this before but I wasn’t reviewing then.

Usual problems with unpublished fan fiction. Missing words, wrong words etc.

I don’t like that it was left hanging and the only way to get the rest is a 300,000+ word sequel. I’ve read it before but not at this time.

Once again, I'm reviewing something I don't remember fully.
I didn't know this fanfiction was listed in Goodreads, otherwise, I would have reviewed it sooner before I forget how I felt the first time I read it. That is right, I read this multiple times. But only the first few chapters, because I love how Elizabeth and Darcy meet in this story. I only finished it once.
This story is full of action, and many interesting things happen in it. But what I love about it is Elizabeth. She might be my favorite Elizabeth in all of the fanon; she is smarter than her canon self, not as headstrong but retains all of her good qualities.
So I recommend it to every one who liked Elizabeth and don't mind their characters less flawed.
