I really didn’t like this book. I’ve come to learn that racism is a part of western novels, but this one was worse than normal and just plain disgusting at times. Also, the outlaws in this one were sick in the head and made the story difficult to get through. The characters fell flat for the most part and the author did a poor job of setting the scene.

I found the story-line interesting and compelling, the characters intriguing, typical Ralph Compton. As an audio book, however, I felt the narration was flat and monotonous. Robbins was not very adept at the various voices.

This starts out, a very unusual mix of characters.

A simple, but honest man of the west. Working at the stables.
A young lady, ran away from home, to find better things. Now down on her luck.
Selling food on the street.
A slick, grifter and scam artist. From the big city east.

Not to mention the federal agent, aging mountain man, and the outlaws.

The lives of the young trio, intertwined.
With them deciding, the way to their dreams.
Was to hunt down, the mot dangerous gang of outlaws for bounty.
The problem being, none of them knew how or where to start.

The story has several plot lines and character threads at play.

Main item that kept it from 5 stars for me.
The simplistic way used. To try and resolve it all.
In a massacre of characters, in the same place.
(Will not give further detail on that. As to keep from excess spoilers.)

Outside of that. This honestly, was a western not the norm.
While still having dusty trails and shoot outs.

A lot of different characters in this story.

Charley Pickett talks his friend Tony and a young girl, Melissa he is in love with along with a drunk buffalo runner or hunter, whatever you want to call him, to go after some horse thieves who people call the Hoodoos. The horse thieves have a bounty on them of seven thousand dollars. Charley, Tony and Melissa have to learn how to shoot along the way.

There is a stupid government man, Bill Shores who would have died a hundred times over if not for an old Shoshone Indian named Red Fox. Both these men are after the Hoodoos for different reasons.

Tony stole money and there is a group of men after him. There are even more characters in this story, but I’m not going to spoil it for you.

Then there is the town of Painted Rock, where all these characters come together for an interesting showdown.

Interesting enough story, but not very fast paced until close to the end.

It starts out pretty wiolly nilly. In the beginning it has no point, but as it goes on it gets fun and exciting.
