A great read for anyone who is following Jesus and working in a secular job - also for pastors and ministry workers supporting and teaching/training those under their care. I wish I’d read this in the 6 years I worked in various secular jobs pre-ministry.

First off I recommend if you are a Christian in any form of work; be that full time employment, part time employment, self employed, studying, house wife/husband..well any work, that you read this book! Mark answers so many questions and concerns I had as a Christian trying to take Jesus to work with me, recognising my paid employment as a way of worshipping The Lord and the importance of the roll a boss has in my life. From reading this book it has given me a fresh passion for both Monday mornings, but opportunities to share my faith with colleagues, to invest in friendships with those I work with. They are not just colleagues, but friends. The workplace is a mission field, as Greene reminds us, a mission field right on the door step.

I found this really helpful and thought-provoking. It's been revised a few times; I have the third edition, from 2001. I think the Christian community is finally starting to catch up to the facts presented here - that a majority of us work 9-5 style jobs, that it is our ministry field, and that we should be properly equipped for our daily work. It's a slow process and I know from my perspective I still don't hear it enough (if at all) in my spiritual circles. However, through resources such as Theology of Work project and Scatter, it is finally being addressed. This book was originally published in the '90s, so I believe Mr. Greene was ahead of his time! It is written from a British perspective, so most of his examples are from that part of the world (which I found endearing), but readers should find them applicable nonetheless. I plan to look into some of the resources listed in the back and will be recommending it to my young professionals group.

The topic of work – how we see it, how we can use it, how we can be a part of God’s Kingdom and still be in the workplace, how we can survive what is predominantly secular environment – is one that I have encountered and engaged with for much of my life.

Having spent a long career struggling with this issue, I do now wish I had read this book 35 years ago.

Mark is humourous, clear-thinking and expert in his subject. A great communicator with an important message for all of us see our “work”, whatever that encompasses, as our mission field.

There are numerous examples and stories of how Christians are serving in their workplace, making a difference, being salt and light in a world that needs it.

Mark is encouraging and practical in his advice. It is certainly a “must read” for all young Christians starting out on their adventure into the world of work.

Comical & Biblical.
WoW - Wisdom of the Word.
Brilliant one-liners and excellent illustrations
Authentic and relatable.

I love that Mark Greene‘s journal style of writing impacts me and his work experiences in Ogilvy and Mather, is exactly the best place to record his own encounters in sharing the Gospel without barriers and without borders.

My take-away:
Work is a seven-letter word: SERVICE to God and to people.
The Hebrew word for work is „avodah“ which is also the word for worship.
No wonder we are called to servanthood, servant leadership, servant lifestyle, servant work ethics, servant mindset.

In application:
Pastor CH Spurgeon once asked a young girl, who served as a domestic in one of his families… what evidence she could give of having become a Christian, and the girl meekly answered, “Well now, Sir, I sweep under the mats.” 🤣

Whether you work in a secular environment or not, I found this book really helpful for me to gain perspective of what it looks like to live a worship-filled and gospel-driven life (mainly in the workplace, but also with my family and friends - some of the principles are transferable).
It is good to be reminded that work is good and it is from God, so therefore it should be for God.

Absolutely incredible read. Just excellent, real and matter of fact. It’s easy to read and easy to apply to your daily working life. I think it’s a 100% just read for every Christian going into the workplace or who are a already in it.

It’s one I hope to go back and re read every few years to keep myself in check!

Any questions you have about being a Christian in the contemporary world of work, Greene answers. Careers, jobs, and titles very easily become idols. Greene helps us apply a different lens, a God lens, so that work becomes wor-k-ship to God; a servant heart.

Brilliant! Not only a brilliant book, but one based on our side of the Atlantic which therefore recognises the national cultural barriers to bringing yourself to raise issues of faith with anyone! While I've enjoyed reading a few other books of this kind, American ones just assume you will spread the word. Mark Greene, on the other hand, accepts that we Brits are far too shy and uncomfortable about doing such things, so acknowledges that it is a problem in the UK, one which we may be able to overcome by proving our faith by our conduct without such need to talk about religion!

Good book. Full of stories & examples. V readable, motivational & practical.
Esp strong on witness at work, godliness & integrity in living as gospel people at work. More can b said on theology of work & can b found elsewhere, tho what is provided here is very good.
Some will find quibbles esp over some of the assumptions about calling & guidance, but that is hardly a reason not to benefit from what is excellent here.

Fairly interesting, looking at the importance of living as a Christian in the workplace - having integrity, being a living witness, showing respect and fairness, etc. Nothing particularly new and startling, but some interesting anecdotes. Worth reading.

This is a good book, inspiring, full of ideas for ministering and evangelizing those around you. the only flaw - it subtly encourages you to spend evenings away from family if there are opportunities to talk to others at work.
