This is a collection of stories from Christian publisher Barbour Press all themed around runaway brides and set in America in the latter half of the 19th century. From a wealthy socialite getting cold feet about her arranged dynastic marriage to a mail-order bride choosing to marry a stranger rather than a man she knows for certain to be unpleasant, this is a pleasantly varied collection, and when I say pleasantly varied, I was surprised and delighted to find one of the stories featured a black couple. (Also, I learned something - I didn’t know about all-black towns in Kansas in the late 1800s).

As usual when I review collections, I’ll give each story a brief review and individual rating before assigning an overall rating for the collection.

From This Day Forward by Rita Gerlach
In the aftermath of the Civil War, a young woman wishes to follow her heart - even if that leads to a former soldier for the other side.
Beautifully descriptive prose in this story, and I really liked Amy as a young woman trying to honour her father’s wishes but unable to go so far as to sacrifice her happiness for him. I would have liked a little more sense of her love interest Rory Maguire, though, especially as he seemed to go inexplicably from being her wealthy neighbour’s stable master to a man who owned a large estate of his own with no time in between. Four stars.

Legacy Of Love by Terri J. Haynes
This was the one with the black couple, and I really enjoyed it. Delia’s one of the ‘elite’ in her small Kentucky town, daughter of a store owner and a young lady with a talent for invention. Her love interest Josiah isn’t from her social class, but he has a generous soul to match Delia’s and when the chance comes up to move to Kansas and claim a place for themselves there, Delia must choose between going with Josiah and having to struggle, or living a life of ease as a wealthy man’s wife.
I liked this couple so much, and it’s honestly just so refreshing to read a historical romance featuring characters of colour. Reading about the daily prejudice Delia and Josiah would have had to deal with, and how large events had monumental impacts on their lives, was genuinely fascinating. Five stars.

The Elusive Heiress by Noelle Marchand
A wealthy heiress makes a run for it when she discovers what the English earl her father has arranged for her to marry really thinks of his upstart American bride.
This might have been my favourite story of the bunch; Georgiana started off spirited but spoiled, and learned the hard way about the realities of life while never losing her spirit. She finds her faith along the way, which brings her and Henry finally into a perfect alignment of hearts and minds. Five stars.

A Day Late And A Dollar Short by Vickie McDonough
Callie chooses to become a mail-order bride when her uncle basically attempts to sell her off to a crony. Unfortunately, she arrives in Texas only to find her groom just married someone else. Offered a temporary position as governess to rancher Erik Kessler’s daughter, she has little choice but to accept.
There’s quite a bit of romantic suspense to this story as well as some very realistic details of life in the period - washing day sounds like pure hell - and I loved Erik and his little daughter Annika. A delightful mail-order bride story with a twist! Five stars.

The Groom She Thought She’d Left Behind by Darlene Panzera
Emily Pembrooke gets cold feet on the very day of her wedding to magnate Christian Gould - a man she’s never even seen. I certainly didn’t blame her for making a run for it. Where this gets hilarious is when you realize the coachman she convinces to be her accomplice is none other than her groom himself, who wanted to check his bride was really all right with marrying a complete stranger. He certainly got his answer!
I laughed more than once reading this story; poor Emily has a talent for getting herself into scrapes despite her very best intentions, all of which only managed to thoroughly endear her to Christian. He should probably have come clean sooner, but his decisions were perfectly understandable even if they did cost Emily some unnecessary angst. Five stars.

The Flyaway Bride by Jenness Walker
Taking her sister Jenny’s place as she goes to marry the man she’s been writing to under Jenny’s name for months is pretty nerve-wracking for Josey Middleton.
Unfortunately, her groom isn’t where he’s supposed to be, and a series of unfortunate events transpire to leave her in a perfectly dreadful situation, her only aid the mysterious traveller known only as Rhett.
I felt so sorry for poor Josey, and while in the previous story Christian’s silence was understandable, I didn’t really get Everett’s reasoning in this one. Considering Josey’s obvious distress, he should have revealed himself much sooner and put her out of her misery. Four stars.

The Irish Bride by Renee Yancy
The appearance of P.T. Barnum and Tiny Tim in this one enlivened a story of a class divide; Bernadine is an Irishwoman from the upper classes sent to America with her father’s wealth, ill-gotten from tenants he’d driven off his land during Ireland’s potato famine, and her love interest Michael Quinn is basically a nobody. Since Bernadine pays for his passage on a transatlantic liner, there are distinct echoes of Rose and Jack in Titanic as well, though it isn’t until they are in Boston that romance is able to blossom. Of course it’s not that simple, with a wicked uncle determined to steal Bernadine’s inheritance.
This was a story with a weak ending, unfortunately. I didn’t buy the final confrontation scene or the supposed legal argument which featured. The rest of the story was strong enough for it still to earn four stars, though.

Overall, I think there’s something in this collection for anyone who enjoys a clean period romance, and even if you don’t particularly care for strong Christian themes, I don’t think any of the characters featured were portrayed as more than typically devout for the period. A couple of the stories were genuinely excellent, and while a few were weaker they were still all pretty well-written. I don’t give many collections five stars, but I’d say this one really deserves it.

Amy’s home is at stake if she doesn’t marry her neighbor. Delia’s father wants her to marry into a political family. Georgiana is posing as a wealthy man’s wife in order to hide from her groom. Callie is fleeing one wedding and racing to marry a stranger. Emily flees her wedding with the help of a mysterious coachman. Josey’s best friend leaves a letter proposing marriage unanswered in order to elope. Bernadine becomes the ward and pawn of her evil uncle. Where will each turn when they have only God to trust?

Amy so wants to get married but all she thinks about is the man she met before the war started. She has no clue if he made it or if he passed. What she does know is she does not want to marry her haughty neighbor, Mr Montague.

As she is walking down the toe-path she sees an OX and the man walking besides it looks familiar but she can’t place him. He tells her the same. Once he tells her his name is Rory she runs after him and they instantly felt the same as before he left for the war. She can hardly believe he made it. Will her father let them get married or will she have to leave?

This couple was funny and enlightening about their relationship. The outside can not be judged nor the side someone takes.

Delia has been trying to help the low income families around town. In doing so she has befriended Josiah and his sister. They think highly of each other. When the preachers in-laws come for a visit they tell about his nice Kansas is and how black families have a town of their own and land they can have. It all sounds good to Josiah and Delia.

Then a young man comes back to town and tries to woo Delia. When she starts to find out what he is really like she doesn’t want anything to do with him. One kiss from Josiah breaks her down. Can these two make it? A hard working but low income man and a well of Delia?

These two were great to read about they were two people from the wrong side of society but yet willing to try and make things work no matter what anyone else thinks.

Georgiana over hears what her fiancé really thinks about her. Henry, a family friend is with her when she over hears. She takes off to parts unknown to start all over until she turns 21 to gain her inheritance. She poses as Henry’s wife at the hotel and little does she know Henry is about to find out. Will he help her stay hidden until she turns 21 or will her father find her after all?

I enjoyed these characters as we see Georgiana or Gigi has he is know to others, grow and really help people instead of looking down on them. We see Henry come out of his shell and own up to he really is and remembers what is was like to really care about people.

Callie refuses to marry the person her family wants her to. She writes to a stranger when she shows up the man already married someone else the day before. Left with no money and a friend already gone ahead to her home what is she to do?

Erick sees her sitting and walks over to see if she would help talk care of his little girl as his sister has to leave in a few weeks. They strike a deal but will it really work? Will Callie fall in love with Erick?

A lovely story of second chances and new love. A feel good story.

Emily is on her way to her wedding to marry Christian Gould. As she steps into the exquisite carriage the footman starts a conversation with her. They talk a little about Christian and he finds out she is running away after she heard he has been seen with other women and a rake. She steals the carriage and takes off with the footman with her.

They end up at a friends estate to get jobs. She learns his name is George Lawrence.. Her and George start working together and grown a strong relationship. She has a hard time trying to fit in the kitchen, stables, cleaning but she makes it through. A telegram shows up telling explains her father has had a heart attack and might not make it.

The only thing to do is go home and marry Christian. She doesn’t want to as she has feelings for George. Can these two work things out.

A lovely read that is twisted but in a good way. It was nice to see these two work together.

Josey is to meet a Mr Everett at the train station but she can’t find him. In his letters he has asked her to be his wife and meet her in Ohio. She runs into a young boy and his dog and helps him find his way home. Then she jumps on the with a man’s help named Rhett. At least that is the name she thinks she hears.

On the way to Colorado they help a young woman who is pregnant to get to her home what the train can go no further do to riots. Josey hangs on to the letters that Everett has been writing to Jenny her sister. But Josey is the one that has been writing when Jenny gets bored with letters.

When he finds out who Josey really is and vice versa can these two come to agreement?

Not a bad story we see Josey always busy when it is time to meet Mr Everett which is kind of funny. Everett is a kind man at heart and really shows it.

Bernadette ’s father was killed on the way to the ships to leave for America. Her and Oonagh with some help get on the ship but she see’s Michael and yells for him. That can’t be her long lost love who left her behind. Before the ship can sail Michael and another man are found if no one ays for them they get kicked off. Bernadette pays for them and she vows to help when they reach her uncle.

Her uncle doesn’t like Michael and sends him on his way. IN the mean time he seems Oonagh to help somewhere else and has a lover pose as Bernadette’s ladies maid. All he wants his her gold and her fortune that he father has put in the bank for her.

Can she get away from this man and to Michael?

A great story of help and second chances. The whole book was lovely to read and glad I had a chance. The authors did an excellent job with each story.

By chance Josey meets a man whose name seems to be Rheet. When they discover the true identity of one another, will it be a help or a hindrance?
In Renee Yancey's "The Irish Bride" Deanie Devane has to flee with her maid Oonagh to Boston from Ireland in 1847 after her father was killed because of his misdeeds. Seven Short Stories 4.6* - These are not full length novels but are complete in themselves, they are very clean (not even a kiss is allowed in two of the stories).

From This Day Forward by Rita Gerlach 4* - set just after the end of the Civil War. Amy unexpectedly meets again the only man to have peaked her interest from before the War but he didn’t fight on the side she expected. Can they have a future?

Legacy of Love by Terri J. Haynes 4* - It is not until the day of her wedding to another man that Delia realises she is in love with her friend Josiah. Talk about leaving things to the last minute!

The Elusive Heiress by Noelle Marchand 4.5* - Georgiana goes on the run rather than be married for her dowry, she hopes if she can stay ahead of her father for seven months when she will become 21, she can then live on the inheritance from her grandmother. Whilst in the city of Denver she discovers God and that a business acquaintance of her father is more interesting than he had seemed in the past. A good read.

A Day Late and a Dollar Short by Vickie McDonough 4.5* - To escape an arranged marriage, Callie chooses to be a mail order bride however on arrival in Texas she finds her bridegroom has up and married another woman. So instead she agrees to look after a mute 5 year old girl, with a view to marrying the girl’s father after a two week period. Then her original bridegroom returns and wants her back!

The Groom She Thought She’d Left Behind by Darlene Panzera 5* - Emily has second thoughts about marrying a man she has never met and flees from her wedding - only she doesn’t realise that the man who helps her escape is actually her bridegroom. A lovely sweet and romantic story. My favourite in this collection.

The Flyaway Bride by Jenness Walker 5* - A series of missed meetings and misunderstandings dog the romance of Josey and Everett. A highly entertaining story.

The Irish Bride by Renee Yancy 5* - Fleeing from the horrors of the potato famine, and the injustices committed by her dead father; Deanie travels to Boston where her uncle plots to steal her inheritance. Loved the inclusion into the story of P.T. Barnum and General Tom Thumb.

From Maryland 1865 just after the civil war to Kentucky 1877 to New York 1898 to Ohio and Colorado1892 to Massachusetts 1892 to Ohio 1877 to Ireland 1877. I never used to really care for collections, mainly because they were too short. If I did feel that way, this is sure to change it, as I am quite endeared to it. Some were new authors to me, some I'd read their books before, now I'm a fan of all.

Usually as I go along I think of what I would like to say in my review, noting things that stand out. This book though, as I read I thought - I like this one best - then I thought the same about the next story, and the next - so they're all my favorites! I've got to say that The Groom She Thought She'd Left Behind I couldn't put down and I swear that I held my breath till the end. And the next story makes you laugh out loud. Misunderstandings and perfect understandings, rejection and acceptance. A girl can change her mind, can't she? I love that there's a Christian message and lessons too. This is a book that I can highly recommend to just about everyone.

This collection is a delightful read. From the determined heroines who find themselves in binds of all sorts, to the heroes who help the runaway brides in their predicaments, to the endearing secondary characters, this collection is well worth reading. Every novella earned a four star or higher, which, for me, is rare when reading collections. I was also introduced to authors I’d not heard of before, which hooked me on their writing. This is a fun collection, and one I definitely recommend reading!

I received an ARC from Barbour Publishing, Inc via Netgalley for my honest review.

I truly enjoy this collection. Each author did a great job and together make a beautiful book. Amy and Rory got a second chance. Deliah and Josiah have an opportunity to start a legacy. Georgina and Henry are one of those unexpected, didn't see that one coming story. Callie seems to be left in the wrong place, but God had another plan for her. Emily and Christian's story is a wonderful story. Josey fall in love with a letter and many things happen. And finally, Deanie has a second chance in a new land with a lost love.

If you like good Christian historial fiction books, with many twists, funny situations, a bit of drama, a lot of romance, faith, and a beautiful end. I must say, this book is for you.

Romance is not my favorite genre and reading a set like this is usually painful before I can finish it. However, this set of stories were so well done and creative I enjoyed them all!

I’m still trying to decide which one was my favorite, they all had characters that were easy to love as well as storylines that were unique.

Definitely recommend to those who like historical romance. Good stuff.

This was a very unique set of stories filled with lots of different twists and turns. A very diverse group of characters, that give everyone someone they can relate to. All of the books were fun stories, I do wish they were longer so we could get to know the characters more but they were still good :) Plus I found a couple new authors I like.

Overall, I enjoyed this collection of stories. All were enjoyable while there were some I liked more than others. My favorite of the collection was "The Flyaway Bride" by Jenness Walker followed closely by 'A Day Late and a Dollar Short" and "The Groom She Thought She'd Left Behind." All the stories had likable characters and fun storylines. My favorite stories had a good mix of romance and humor in them. Solid collection of good historical romances.

The Runaway Brides Collection: 7 Historical Brides Get Cold Feet at the Alter

Set in 1847 to 1898 in different locations, including Ireland, these seven women become mail-order brides. Each woman faces unsavory marriages prospects, either arranged or pressured to marry without love. These women are courageous leaving everything behind and moving away from home and ultimately marrying a stranger. I am not sure I would have been brave enough, but then desperate times call for desperate measures. A great historical collection.

The Runaway Brides is an enjoyable collection with tales of seven brides who, rather than be forced into arranged marriages, seek to make their own choice of grooms. The antics of Josey Middleton made me laugh out loud. Her story was fun and lighthearted. Bernadine faced very difficult circumstances fleeing Ireland. Amy must marry to save her family home but at what cost? Delia wants to use her freedom to help others. Georgiana changes her name to escape her father's scheme. Callie goes from the shores of Lake Erie to Dallas, Texas in search of her future. Emily Pembrooke ran away with a stranger but could she trust him?
Each story was different, but all were good. I really enjoyed each one.

I received an ARC copy of this book from Barbour through NetGalley. This is my own opinion.

The Runaway Brides Collection
By Rita Gerlach, Terri J. Haynes, Noelle Marchand, Vickie McDonough, Darlene Panzera, Jenness Walker, Renee Yancy
This well-written collection of historical romance novellas features tales of runaway brides who find love on the run. I have read many novella collections and this is by far the best collection. There was no hit or miss with the stories. Each story held depth despite the length. I enjoyed reading each tale and found myself reluctant to put the book down to go to bed.

Barbour Books always collects the best authors for their anthologies and The Runaway Brides is no different.

There are nine stories in this book and each of the stories include a bride being forced into an unwanted marriage by family members (most usually the fathers). The grooms are either totally unknown to the bride or are in some way detestable to the brides. The circumstances are so bad that the brides take matters into their own hands and sneak away the best way they can, some as mail order brides, some as women looking for jobs, some as nannies and caretakers. BUT while they are running away from someone, they are running to what they know will be a different life, they are just not sure how it will play out.

This is a five star book, two thumbs up, and the fastest train out of town.

My thanks to Barbour Books for allowing me to read this book. Galley provided by NetGalley.com

A unique collection of stories by different authors. I enjoy these collections because they provide not only great short reads, but also the opportunity to discover new-to-me authors. This one did not disappoint as I didn't recognize a single author, however I will now be looking them up as I enjoyed reading their works. Historical romances that take new approaches to love in the past. While you are enjoying the romances you also pick up historical tidbits that you might not know. Such as, "Did you know that there were all black towns built after the end of the Civil War?"

Such a fun historical read. And I love the different stories from some of my favorite authors as well as a few new ones for me that were absolutely wonderful. It was a lovely collection and so enjoyable.

I love historical fiction and this really filled the bill! Such a great set of stories!

I received an ebook copy from NetGalley and Barbour Publishing. All thoughts are my own.

The Runaway Brides Collection is a delightful gathering of historical fiction. Various authors, familiar and new, contribute their work. Stories of great variety with a common theme. Great for romance fans. Thanks to NetGalley for an arc in exchange for an honest review.

This is such an interesting collection of stories about run-away brides. Each bride has her own unique story. All are ladies of faith and character. These are shorter stories, but each seem to be complete in itself. These clean and sweet stories with no foul language are entertaining reading. Another great collection from Barbour by some good authors.

I received a copy of this book from the publisher. All opinions are my own.

I thought the Runaway Brides Collection was a most enjoyable book to read The collection is From this day forward by Rita Gerlach, Legacy of love by Terri J Haynes, The Elusive Heiress by Noelle Marchland, A day late and a dollar short by Vickie McDonough The groom she thought she'd left behind by Darlene Panzera, The flyaway bride by Jenness Walker, and The Irish bride by Renee Yancy. All great stories I can't wait to read again and again. You too will want to read them again and again.
