rounding it up to 4 magic stars

A light, fun and entertaining urban fantasy full of fast-paced action, magic and thrilling twists and turns.
Familiar Magic is a good start to an appealing series that deftly manages to combine mystery, horror and fast-paced action with a solid touch of magic and more than a pint of humor.

Stella Familiar is exactly what her name implies: a Familiar. And no, she isn't a cat! Neither black nor any other kind - 'cause I admit that's what I had been expecting. Stella is a human-shaped familiar and she belongs to The London Coven, a trio of urban witches that keep the Uncanny of London under control. At least they used to, to be exact. Until the day something had literally torn them apart, leaving only Stella behind. And Stella may be 'nothing but a lowly familiar' but she swore to get revenge.

Alongside detective David Tyler, a non-magical absolutely normal guy, albeit with a penchant for putting his foot in his mouth at the most inopportune times; Stella goes in search of the monster who not only destroyed her masters but is now aiming for the rest of the Uncanny of London.

They both keep jumping from frying pan into the fire and back again, in a whirlwind of action, with horrifying monsters at their heels. The chase is full of descriptive violence and delightfully creepy horror-movie worthy scenes, and yet the part you will remember most is the fun.

Because, despite the gruesomeness of a scene where Stella is chased by a hellish hound, your lips will inevitably curl up in a smile when she narrates it like this:
'I screamed and hurled myself to the side, crashing into the wall so hard it's a wonder I didn't dash my brains out. ... The beast was vicious and strong but not so gifted with brains. ... Somehow I'd jumped from standing in the street, about to be chewed on like the favorite squeaky toy of the Godzilla of dogs, ...'
And this is just the beginning.

Stella is refreshing as characters go - a human-shaped familiar created for the purpose of doing the witches bidding. And I loved the way her emotions were a little bit all over the place at times. Because she is not human after all.
And then there came David, who always kept a bright face on things despite the world-tipping situations he found himself in.
I loved Detective David Tyler. He reminds me of my good friend Daniel, who has the same penchant for stating the truth in a manner that will both shock you and make you laugh out loud.

From his reaction to meeting Stella:
'This is insane. This is all completely insane. It's the job, isn't it? It's all those times I got bashed over the head chasing criminals, finally catching up with me.'

To the way he helps her out:
'It's ok, Magic Lady. I may be an idiot but I know how to carry out an investigation. This is my thing. Trust me.'

And the way he makes her feel better:
'There we go. Let's get in there and do our job. Show them they messed with the wrong familiar.'
'David'
'Yes, Stella?'
'Thank you.'
'That's okay. Feel free to return the favour when you get a moment, because I am seriously shitting it right now.'

David is a keeper!

I loved the diversity of denizens of the Uncanny Kingdom - the hidden magical world in this series, the fast paced action, as well as the snarky humor and the startling twists I didn't see coming. It did get a bit repetitive at times and yet, I found it difficult to set it down. And then that end! I absolutely loved it! Downright awesome if you ask me.

If you love Urban Fantasy you should give this a try. It's absolutely worth it!

It took me a while to get into the story and it did get slightly better after the start but I found it quite repetitive and not very believable. The main character was hard to like, she didn't seem very bright and kept falling for the same trick over and over. Also a lot of her actions seemed pointless.
I wasn't keen on the voice of the narrator. Some of the voices were particularly annoying and unpleasant to listen to.
I wanted to finish book 1 at least, but did struggle to get through it, I am not planning to read the rest of the 2 books.

Remember when I said I wasn't impressed with the prequel? Well, I'm still not. But I have to say, for a straight up urban fantasy (no romance), this was pretty good. Read the prequel but don't let it's lack keep you from reading this one. It's almost as if someone else wrote this book. A solid 4 stars

I admit, I was pulled in entirely by the cover - I love London, and books set there. Obviously the genre appealed to me, too. This urban fantasy book was a great listen. The story is fast-paced, intriguing and fun, but what really set it apart for me was the narration. Heather Tracy did a fantastic job, particularly of the voices, and her enthusiasm pulled me right along for the ride. I'll definitely be checking out the next book in the series, and can recommend this audiobook to fans of urban fantasy.

In a secret world filled with magic hidden before our very eyes we meet Stella. Stella is the familiar for the London Coven. But one day her whole world is turned upside down when the London Coven witches are murdered while she’s sleeping. Now she must get revenge for her fallen coven...any way possible.
This book really surprised me. Their is so much action in this book and enough twists and turns to keep you on the edge of your seat. I loved how their are almost two different versions of London, the magical and not, since not everyone is able to see the magical beings or place in their own town. I really liked how kick butt our heroine is and how much she evolves and learns that she can be her own person and not have to serve another just because she is a familiar. I really enjoyed the narrator as well and I believe that Heather Tracy did an amazing job and really helped bring even more life to this amazing tale. Also that ending had me screaming! If you are looking for a good magical book with a kick butt heroine then this is the book for you!

Loved this new series - a breakthrough in a new genre different than the previous works I've read from this author. I was honored to receive an ARC...the story starts out full throttle with a familiar's coven being horribly murdered and she walks in to find the seat of their power devoid of all magic. Queue in a crazy devil dog and the chase is on. The main character, Stella, barely escapes the hell dog and miraculously magics herself into the middle of a local detective's home (without even consciously trying). I have to say I loved the humor of the detective, David Tyler, as his normal life is turned upside down with the discovery that magic is real and the things that go bump in the night are not just scary myths. Together, Stella and David try to track down this being who murdered London's most powerful trio of witches and Stella will stop at nothing to exact vengeance on behalf of her coven. There's strong character traits and backgrounds and the setting for this magical world is expertly spun, leaving the reader wanting to dive in deeper. I hope this new genre continues as it is more along my typical reads; however, I will say I have enjoyed everything I have read so far of Stott's - even stories I may not have normally chosen to follow. We have a bright author with an exceptional imagination and gift for storytelling.

I do not want to give any additional spoilers away so if you want to read more, you'll have to pickup a copy. It's free for Kindle Unlimited so what have you got to lose. I finished the book in two days, outside of working (& I put 25 hours in the last two days at work so that pretty much tells you I couldn't put it down until I finished). Can't wait for more in this series and maybe other similar series.

The only thing I would like to see a bit more of would be a little love or romance...or even some sexual tension in that club of the succubus. These two had plenty of opportunity throughout their story and maybe there's some to come in the future but I would have loved to see a bit of that. I do tend to favor paranormal romance though so that could just be me! Thanks again for gifting us with your story and for the ARC.

This is the most exciting urban fantasy that I have read so far.
It jumps right into the action with Stella finding her coven dead, though it should have been impossible. Trying to find the killer, as a lowly familiar, seems to be an insurmountable task without help.
It is vividly descriptive, an emotional rollercoaster, with a bombshell to finish.
Stunning work as Mr Stott's first foray into UF.

I absolutely hated this book! There is almost no plot whatsoever! No descriptions given for the characters, the environment or even the bloody 'devil dog'! How am I supposed to enjoy a book when I am constantly guessing wtf the surroundings and the characters look like? David seems like a total fucking bafoon with no mental filter(foot in mouth syndrome) and Stella seems like a dumb twat with serious anger management issues! How was she created? How long has she lived? How old did they decide to make her???? Seriously terrible book

Audiobook review: Familiar Magic is an interesting magical fantasy book with a unique twist on witches familiars. The story was entertaining right from the start and fast paced. If you are squimish with violence, this book may not be for you. The only thing that had me pausing was the breaking the fairy in half and drinking their substance to gain power. It was a first for me. The narrator did an excellent job! I received a free copy of this audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

Boy, am I glad I was an ARC reader! This was a great story.
Stella Familiar returned home to the London Coven to find all three high witches torn to pieces and scattered around the common room. Stella, their familiar, a thing made by them of dirt, spit and will, made a vow to get bloody revenge. But first she had to survive an attack from a big monster devil dog thing waiting for her. Which she did by teleporting into Detective David Tyler’s kitchen. Talking with David at a cafe, she questioned who she is, and what can she to do without her masters, when she and David are suddenly attacked by the possessed waitress. Now David has now become a believer in Magic. They met a Monk, a keeper of the Sorcerer Tree, which has been stripped of magic, desecrated and burned, much like Stella's witches. It was a thing of darkness that has attacked, twice now. That creature—that patch of twitching darkness—destroyed Stella's coven, and now it had killed the Sorcerer Tree, its Church and all of its followers. No way she will stop until whatever had crept towards her in the black memories of the skinned monk was dead. At The Beehive, she got a (reluctantly given) hint from Razor that there may be information at The Den. They visit the proprietress, the succubus Anya, for a few pages of really interesting action. Now they’ve been summoned by The First Witch. Stella is told she has potential, but not given any additional help or information. David and Stella visit the scene of the crime, are attacked by giant devil dogs, which Stella obliterates. But David has disappeared, leaving a trail of blood behind. She gets a name, Mr. Trick, from Razor at The Beehive, but needs the Black Magic help of the powerful wizard, mighty Giles L’Merrier to find him. The wizard is terrified by the information he gets, and sends Stella away with just an address. Stella fortifies her power with a visit to eat the fairies in London's sewer. After battling many evil minions of the darkness, she finally meets it face to face. And recognizes it. Questions are answered, though not to Stella's liking. And then the grand confrontation--no spoilers, you've got to read the book, and it's well worth it.

The London Coven is made up of the three most powerful witches in the city who have been charged with policing the denizens of the Uncanny Kingdom - the hidden magical world in this series' universe - and to help keep most humans unaware of its existence. They've been doing their job for a few hundred years, but as the story opens, Stella Familiar, a humanoid woman the Coven had created to assist them in their work, comes home to find them dead. Stella quickly begins trying to find out what killed her witches and avenge their deaths.

Aside from a short prequel story I haven't yet read, "Familiar Magic" is the first book in publisher Genre Reader's London Coven series, one of at least three series they have that are set in their multi-author Uncanny Kingdom universe. It's full of action, snarky humor, interesting people and lots of magic. It's a face-paced tale that still manages to work in some strong world-building and good character development.

Stella makes for an intriguing heroine. She was conjured up, fully grown, by her masters, and she never ages, but even though she was created for a specific purpose, she's not just a puppet or living automaton. She has a full range of emotions, is smart and witty, has strengths and vulnerabilities and is able to determine her own path, be it what she needs to do in the moment or what plan she had for her own future.

She gets teamed up with Detective David Tyler, who until Stella entered his life knew nothing about the magical world existing along-side the human one. And while he may get flustered when confronted with yet some other new thing or experience, he has an almost unrelenting positive attitude and does his best to just roll with it. Together, Stella and David make for a formidable (and entertaining) team.

This was one of those books I had a hard time putting down once I picked it up. It's a promising start to what I'm hoping will be a really fun series.

I've no spoilers of Familiar Magic in this review but if you haven't read Underground Magic, the series' excellent prequel, stop right here and go read that. You can get it from the author for free and it's worth the read. Warning though: by necessity this review is a major spoiler of Underground Magic.

This book started off with a gut punch. I'd read Underground Magic and was really looking forward to seeing further interactions between Kala, Trin, & Feal, the three most powerful witches of London, and their newly created familiar Stella Familiar (yes, I've said this before: gotta love that name). Then on page 1 of this book (so not really a spoiler of this book) all three of the witches are found murdered! Humph. (I'd still recommend Underground Magic though as it's s well written back story and great as a stave-alone novel.)

It's really fun following Stella in action as she gets revenge on what killed her creator (see, I'm being careful here: no spoiler-ish hints about what that is). A mystery and a thriller, full of magic and adventure in a really wonderfully thought out plot. An extraordinarily well drawn lead, supported by a wonderful cast of supporting characters and, yes, a final resolution that's fully satisfying while still leaving me salivating for the next book. This was pure fun and highly recommended.

An interesting and fresh twist on all the old standards of magical fantasy. Witches, fairies, succubae and other mystical creatures come together to make this a delightful and fast paced little romp through a side of London that you have never before seen. Highly enjoyable and well worth the read.
In this premiere book of the London Coven series, M. V. Stott introduces us to Stella, who is not quite what she seems. She definitely is not the young human woman she appears to be. As a matter of fact, she is not even human. There is a reason her last name is Familiar…that's because she is one. A witch's familiar, created by the trio of witches responsible for maintaining order and control amongst the magical denizens (the Uncanny) who share the streets of London with those normal humans who call it home. Stella is exactly what you would expect a familiar to be: a helper, a tool, a servant…everything a witch requires in a familiar. And Stella is perfectly content to be exactly what she was created to be. That is, until the day she comes home to find her creators ripped to shreds and all their magic missing, sucked away as if it had never existed. Now it's left up to Stella to find the truth, and the perpetrator, and exact justice…or is it revenge?
Find out for yourself in this delightful book, "Familiar Magic" by M. V. Stott.

I really enjoyed this story and was captivated within the first couple of words, it was though a spell had been cast and I couldn't stop until the end, yes I listened to it all in one sitting. The book took you on so many twists that you had no idea where it was going to take you next in this fantasy action adventure. I loved the characters, especially David with his witty humour as he tried to tough out whatever was thrown at him. There was plenty of action and intrigue as the magic flew, as well bodies. On to book two to see what happens next.
Stella a witches familiar returns home to find her coven in tatters. With the three mutilated bodies of her coven left beaten and battered left for her to find, she barely makes it out of the place she once called home. She finds help in the form of a human, Detective David Tyler. He has no idea that magic existed but is about to take a very quick course In the subject, as the Canny Mr Trick targets them to play his games with. Can Stella get the revenge she so desperately seeks over the death of her witches or is the treat to powerful for just a familiar to handle.
I loved the narrator of this story, she has such a wide range of voices that it made the story an enjoyable experience. I especially like the changing voice of the baddie. I hope she sticks with the series because I think she was a big part of why I enjoyed it so much

This was a really good start to a new urban fantasy series! The London Coven consists of three of the most powerful witches in London and are tasked with keeping the Denizens, the magical world, and the human world separate and keeping each one safe. Stella is the coven’s familiar, completely made by the witches, and she comes home to find all of them brutally murdered. She’s left to protect London by herself in the process of getting revenge. This was my first book set in the Uncanny Kingdom and the world was well written. I enjoyed that she teamed up with a human, David Tyler, and turned his life upside down in the process. I loved that Matthew could put his own twist on a witch’s familiar and that helped make the story more unique. This book was fast paced from the start and full of action, mystery, great descriptions, some gruesome scenes, and humor.
Heather did a great job with this narration! She spoke at a steady pace, gave each character their own voice and kept me hooked from start to finish with her performance.

I read Underground Magic a long time ago, then pretty much forgot about the Uncanny Kingdom books. Luckily, I found the first trilogy in my awaiting download list and then bought a load more.

This series is based around the hidden magick in London and paths / buildings that can't be seen by 'normals'. There is a familiar of a coven (Stella) who finds her own Witches brutally murdered, and vows to avenge their deaths by any means necessary. This may sound quite simplistic in itself, but there are some great plot twists, some colourful characters, and a brilliant sense of humour throughout that will have you laughing out loud.

This is Urban Fantasy, currently with no romance, and set in modern London. There are varying levels of threats and the plot is fast paced to the end. It is very easy to pick up and read and, for the most part, can be read by young adults too (although there are expletives and some scenes that may be unsuitable for younger teens).

A very good start to the London Coven series, a solid 4.5 stars.

This is a masterfully woven tale of magical retribution and the so-human urge to fight back against what threatens to end us. The story didnt drag, I was promptly pulled in and buckled up for all the twisty turns. The characters were endearing and tough and I loved them.

Stella Familiar, the protagonist, is the new standard in female badassery. She is the heroine all young (and not so young) girls aspire to be. She was bold, gutsy, brave, and yet still retained her heart. She faced everything head on, even when she didnt know what to do or, even more so, when she didnt want to do it. You cant help but respect and root for her as she tackles world-changing evil to save the Uncanny. And get revenge. And save what I hope becomes her boytoy.

I loved every moment of this adventure and I cant wait to read about more of Stellas unique epicosity as she continues to play Uncanny judge and jury.

After listening to Other London and didn't liking much, I thought I wouldn't like this, but I was wrong.

The story follows in a linear order and it's easy to follow. There were a couple of times I had to suspend my disbelief, characters suddenly appearing in weird places in the middle of the fight and a non-magical human, David, accepting everything pretty fast. But that's where my pet peeves ended, the rest of the story is well done, everything comes in a full circle at the end. The characters are likable and I like, specially, how Stella is such a strong character, but doesn't shy away of help when needing it.

David is the best. I thought I was gonna miss Carlisle, but nope, David is an amazing human guy with a great sense of humor that makes you like him instantly.

The narration is spot on. So far, I like all choices of narration for the Uncanny Kingdom series. I like how she can do some creepy voices. I also had no problems differentiating the characters.

This first book in the London Coven series, set in the Uncanny Kingdom, is a fantastic start to the series. Stella Familiar has been created by the witches of the London Coven to protect London but she finds herself alone and facing the worst antagonist she has faced in all her sixty years. She finds an unexpected ally, a "normal", but just meeting Stella puts him in great danger. The story is exciting and original and Stella is a unique character in urban fantasy, being a witches' familiar. Oh, and fairies - who knew?
It is such a pleasant change to read a story set in London with places and references that I recognise. This is the companion series to Ghosted which is also set in the Uncanny Kingdom and features the best ghost I have read about in a long time.

Stella Familiar is just that. A familiar for THE witches coven. Created by the same three witches, the most powerful witches in London. When she returns to the coven she feels no magic, she finds the door open. nothing feels right. Then she finds them dead, all three of them. But how? No one or no thing is more powerful than the witches coven. But that doesn't stop them from being dead. And then she comes up against the hound from hell. Getting away from the hound lands her in the kitchen of Detective David Tyler. Together they look for the murderer of Stella's creators. I loved this book. I received a free copy of this book.

I'm a lucky recieved of an ARC copy of this as per my request and here are my thoughts -

Jumping straight into the action, Stella Familiars story takes you on a fast paced, page turning ride through the secret hidey holes of London, the places the normals (That's humans to you and me) don't realise exist.
Her family is gone and she's alone but for a new friend in David Tyler, a very human detective, who's home she suddenly appeared in after a show down with a big bad....
This book kept me reading long after I should have put it down and got on with adulting! Definitely looking forward to the next book in the series!

Stella is a witches' familiar created to act as the enforcer when paranormals in London needed enforcing. One evening, she returns to the coven only to discover that the witches have all been horribly butchered and every drop of magic sucked from the area.

What's an enforcer to do when the brains of an operation are gone? Why seek bloody vengeance, of course!

Stella periodically guest stars in the Ghosted series, assisting Jake Fletcher, spectral PI with more dangerous cases. Although her personality isn't terribly interesting yet, I hope that she develops more as the series progresses.

This is the first book I've read in the Uncanny Kingdom and I really liked the world building and the concept of the familiars. Did I like the main character? I'm not sure. I understand her feelings after her coven was murdered and she's running on emotion but she was too reactionary and quick with the rage torture for me. If the story timeline or the book itself been any longer without her character balancing out, I might have given the series a pass. As it is, it a good paced read and I'd like to give her a chance.

Narrator : Heather Tracy

Bk 1: Familiar Magic
Great start, dramatic, intriguing and grabs your attention instantly. Stella Familiar was created by a powerful coven, a lowly familiar! But when Stella is met with a horrific scene and then lands, quite literally, in front of detective David Tylor a hunt ensues to find the powerful creature threatening London.
A fabulous story with twists and tricks to keep you guessing and the Narrator does a fantastic job.

Familiar Magic was an excellent read, good characters, great story, sexy female lead, what is not to like. The book was well written, and the whole London magical landscape exceptionally well thought through. The quality of the book enticed me to use Kindle Unlimited to read the rest of the London Coven books and also the Spectral Detective stories (in the same extended series). If you like snarky wisecracking snappy dialogue and great stories, give these books a try. you won't be disappointed.

Well, I didn't love it but I definitely didn't hate it either. It's an interesting insight to the Uncanny Kingdom from Stella's point of view. I think I might grow to like her, eventually, but I was hoping that I'd immediately love her (as I did with Jake Fletcher as the protagonist in Ghost series)
Nevertheless, good writing and an original premise.

This book was ok but I missed that connection with the MC. I really had trouble getting into the story. It was an interesting take on paranormal creatures. I think if I had liked the characters more and the story pulled me in more than I would have enjoyed it so much more. Overall, it was an ok read.

Familiar magic

The story moved at a fast pace and kept me interested. The action was violent and gruesome, but it was not too disgusting. The main characters were not too shallow, but the remaining cast were definitely background material. The battles were intense. All in all the book was engaging.

Familiar

Stella, a familiar of the London Coven, arrives home to a strange lack of magic, and the door hanging from one hinge. After escaping from the attack beast left behind for her, she meets David Tyler after finding herself on his kitchen table.

Good characterization and plotting as with other books in this series.

The attitude of Stella was fantastic and she made for a very strong character. I’m definitely looking forward to more.
