London 1816

Guy Fortescue comes to England to claim his inheritance, Rosecroft Hall, abandoned over thirty years ago when his father fled to France after killing a man in a duel. But England proves to be a dangerous place - someone wants Guy dead. As Guy seeks to discover who lies behind the attacks on his life, he arranges a faux betrothal with Miss Horatia Cavendish.

Unfortunately, things don’t go according to plan. An aspiring poet, Hetty proves to have a mind of her own but in spite of that, Guy finds her far too alluring.

Dangerous....

Headstrong and lovely, Hetty agrees to the betrothal because it allows her to go to London where she can attend literary societies with her aunt. While her affection for Guy grows deeper, she must not forget the betrothal isn’t real. Guy will choose a bride from the beau monde - it will not be a colonel’s daughter from Digswell.

But Hetty is soon drawn in to Guy's life, more and more, and not entirely against her will. He is handsome and brave, and the attraction between them is undeniable. Soon, she can no longer resist her desire for him and the fact that someone is out to kill him only feeds her innate protectiveness of the man she is betrothed to. As attempts are made on Guy’s life, Hetty and his sister ,Genevieve, work together to keep him alive, and a love that has been denied finally comes to fruition in the exciting conclusion.

Baron Guy Fortescue was born and raised in France after his father escaped punishment by fleeing the country after a deadly duel. He stayed in France yet made sure that the estate was managed in his absence.

When Guy comes back he discovers that the estate that his father had paid to keep up, was indeed not in the shape he desired. When he meets Horatia Cavendish it is not a normal meeting. Guy, was unconscious and she was pretending to be a groom, a male groom.

The characters were very well written with Horatia having a zest for life. I felt for her being cut off and having a father that was so troubled and morose.

I can see where the series is going to build on the spies and it should be a great series. It was a pleasant read. I do love the time period and the way the men acted and reacted. This book caught the formality and the correctness of the era.

This is the first book in Maggi Andersen’s The Spies of Mayfair series. I have not read any of Ms Andersen’s books before but an engaging heroine, a dashing hero, interesting secondary characters and just the right amount of intrigue made this a very enjoyable read.

Guy

Frenchmen always seem to have that “Je ne sais quoi” that makes them totally irresistable. So it’s understandable that Guy charmed his way into my heart. He's romantic, seductive, passionate, flirtatious, witty, attentive and what woman could resist a compliment like this.

“Do you know your eyes aren’t brown? They are closer to pure amber with touches of green and gold. Like some rare stone.”

But there is another side to him. It’s when he recounts to Lord Strathairn the terrible things he witnessed whilst fighting against Napoleon’s army in Spain, that we see a man with strong values…a man of honour and integrity. He shows that same honour in his relationship with Horatia much to her chagrin!

Horatia

Horatia is a spirited (maybe a little too much at times but her intentions are admirable) and likeable heroine. She feels stifled by the confines of Malforth Manor and longs to be independent like her Aunt Emily sampling all that London has to offer …poetry recitals, museums, art galleries and parks. She has no desire for love or marriage until Guy comes into her life. He stirs her senses and she’s eager to explore these new emotions and passions.

I was totally charmed by their delightful romance. I especially loved their first meeting when Horatia is disguised as a young groom. It leads to all sorts of wickedly funny moments such as this one…

“You must become a good lover, my friend. It is a skill that requires much study to perfect.”
“In what way?” Oh why had she asked that? She’d just invited him to tell her. She bit her lip, half wanting to hear it and half fearful of what he would say.
“By listening,” he said, surprising her. “What she tells you gives many clues.”
“And if she tells you nothing?”
“You ensure the woman has her pleasure before you take yours, using all of your body, your hands, your tongue and lips, as well as your cock. When she comes, you will hear it, see it, feel it, and delight in it.”
Horatia dipped her head to hide her hot cheeks as he elaborated on what he liked a woman to do to him.

I was really intrigued by Guy’s friend John, Earl of Strathairn. There’s definitely a lot more to him than meets the eye and so I’m pleased he will be getting his own book, TAMING A GENTLEMAN SPY, coming in December 2013.

I adored Guy’s sister Geneviève who obviously cares for her brother and wasn’t above throwing caution to the wind in her efforts to assist him.

I appreciate Ms Andersen’s obvious attention to detail with regard to the historical period and setting. I like how she included real life contemporary figures like the poet, Wordsworth and the actor, Edmund Kean.

The mystery aspect of the plot held my interest and the identity of the person responsible for the attempts on Guy’s life was a real surprise. I fear we haven’t seen the last of Count Forney either.

This is a delightful, entertaining romance and I'm looking forward to reading the next book in the series.

A dashing hero, a delightful heroine, spies, mayhem and murder all abound in this thoroughly entertaining book by Maggi Anderson. This is the first book of hers that I have read, but it surely won't be the last.

I really liked the premise of the book. Usually in these books, when you see a Frenchman come to Britain, he is either a scoundrel or some poor aristocrat who has lost all his money and estates. In this book, the Frenchman is the hero and is very noble and honorable. While we can't say the same for his brother and other characters in the book, it is certainly true of him.

I also liked that the heroine was really strong and intelligent and even though she has vowed never to marry, she embraces love wholeheartedly when it comes to her.

What I didn't like was that it didn't have an epilogue. It would have been nice to catch up with them in six months to a year to see where they are with their lives.

I absolutely loved the cover of this book. But most definitely, don't judge a book by its cover. Because this book did pretty much nothing for me. It started off promising; however, it didn't live up to my expectations. First of all, dear writer, get a freaking editor! Wrong words being used reeeeeeeeeeeally irritate me. I liked Guy well enough as a hero. Horatia, she of the horrid name, was a heroine who was too stupid to live. Seriously, Guy should have let the bad guys carry her off and be done with her! I do like Regency spy stories, so I'm willing to give this author another chance. Hope the next book is better.

This was too much.

There were lost papers, derelict homes, cross-dressing, murder attempts...

Horatia is a typical Regency young lady brought up to a genteel but uneventful life in the country where her small rebellion is to go riding alone in men’s clothes on her father’s horse, The General. One day she happens to find a handsome, unconscious man on the roadside and helps him back to the nearest shelter, a hunting lodge in the woods. Trapped there for the night, Horatia has to continue her masquerade as a groom.

Things seem to work well and the next day, she discovers Baron Guy Fortescue is in fact the heir to the neighbouring estate where her godfather, Eustace lives.

However, Guy is half French and no one is going to fool him into believing the soft faced, gently curved Horatia is a boy, and before long he confronts her with her deceit, and inveigles her into a mock engagement. Guy is a more complicated character than one might imagine, he has been attacked by would be assassins, twice and whoever wants him dead isn’t about to give up now.

Befriended by Lord Strathairn, he isn’t entirely alone in his quest both to stay alive and prove his ancestry so he can lay claim to his estate. Guy suspects his relative, Eustace Fennimore is behind the attacks on his life, and has been ensconced in Rosecroft Hall during the family's exile and becomes its heir should Guy die.

Now that Horatia is engaged, her father is happy to allow her to have a season in London with his sister, Emily, who is immediately taken with Guy, and although Horatia keeps telling herself their betrothal is only a ruse, her feelings for him deepen until she is desperate to help him find out who is trying to kill him.

This story has all the elements of a perfect Regency romance, a handsome Frenchman in fear of his life from unknown quarters, a beautiful girl trying not to fall in love with him and a mysterious Lord who becomes his friend but seems to know a lot more about him than a stranger should.

As a fan of Maggi Andersen, she has done it again with ‘A Baron In Her Bed’, with a mystery encompassed within a love story that has to be solved, and races along to a satisfying conclusion.

Actually 4.5.

Guy Truesdale, Baron Fortescue, has come to England to claim his title and estate. After Guy's father was forced to flee England because of a duel, he married an aristocratic French woman and the family lived abroad through the French Revolution and Napoleon's reign. Now, Guy and his sister are all that is left of his immediate family, and he is determined to take his rightful place as Baron Fortescue. Unfortunately, someone seems determined to end Guy's life. Luckily, after Guy is injured in a murder attempt, Miss Horatia Cavendish comes upon him lying in the road and comes to his aid. Because Horatia is dressed in male clothes, Guy thinks that she is a teenage boy. Thus, begins the adventures of Horatia and Guy.

A BARON IN HER BED is a very entertaining historical with plenty of action and a nice mystery. From the beginning until the very end, this book keeps the reader on her toes. Action and adventure are part and parcel of this story, and Horatia and Guy are cut out to adapt to all the mystery and intrigue. Guy has been through a lot in his life, and those experiences, probably, make him more forward thinking in his attitude toward women. Horatia is an independent, headstrong woman, who seeks to help the man that she loves. There is only one part of the story in which, I wish Horatia had
been less impulsive and more prudent. Other than this one moment, Horatia makes an admirable heroine.

All in all, A BARON IN HER BED is a wonderful, exciting historical romance, which I highly recommend.

A Baron in Her Bed
The first of The Spies of Mayfair series.
The long war with France following the French Revolution is over and Napoleon has been exiled to St Helena after losing the Battle of Waterloo. A Baron in Her Bed is set against a background of unrest caused by those who ferment unrest in England. They plan to hope Napoleon will escape and rise again to instigate revolution. Some of the plotters, English gentlemen, hate the Prince Regent and deplore his reckless extravagance and even threaten his life.

The novel begins dramatically and immediately poses questions which the reader wants to be answered.

The half-French hero, Guy, who recently arrived in England to claim his inheritance, and an unconventional heroine, Horatia, who feels stifled in the country are a memorable pair.

Dressed in male attire Horatia, a strictly brought up Regency lady, is riding her father’s stallion when she sees Guy lying unconscious on the ground. Heavy snow falls so she must find shelter for him. Horatia yearned for excitement in her dull life and it has arrived in an unaccepted manner while she masquerades as a man.

Guy’s identity is challenged, but before the mystery is solved A Baron in Her Bed takes the readers along many intriguing twists and turns, during which Guy and Horatia fall in love.

A Baron in Her Bed moves at a fast pace and held my interest, but not so fast that I did not appreciate the historical details which add interest to the novel and humour which made me chuckle.

It was fine. The romance kinda felt under-developed; it went from 0 to 100 with no inbetween and I was less than impressed. The twists in the story I saw coming from the first chapter, but maybe I've just read too many similar stories and it isn't quite so obvious to other people?

I've said this before and I'll say it again and again (maybe I need to host a weekend program where authors can learn it properly), LOSING YOUR VIRGINITY SHOULD NOT BE PAINFUL. STOP MISINFORMING PEOPLE!!! If you are having penetrative sex for the first time, make sure it is with someone who will stop if you say it hurts, who you're comfortable with so that you can relax. There should be no breaking through any barriers. Sex is natural and your body is built for it, there should not be any pain if it is done properly (please use lots of lube, make sure you are properly aroused and your partner is aware of what they're doing). If there is pain, please stop and try again later. Do. Not. Force. It. If pain persists see your doctor (and/or dump your partner since they might not be acting very considerately).
Thank you for coming to my rant. :)

Guy Trusedale , Baron Fortescue has come to England to claim his birthright. This is not a good time for those with French blood to come to England. There are spies everywhere. Someone seems determined to stop Guy from claiming his place. Is it the relative who has been looking after the estate all this time, or is someone else out to kill him ???
Miss Horatia ( Hetty) Cavendish is a clever and independent young lady, pushing against the rules applied to young ladies of her time. She loves nothing more than riding her father's huge horse across the countryside. She never expected to find someone unconscious on the road.
There is a lot going on behind the scenes that our characters know nothing about. Our hero's past could come back to haunt him through not fault of his own.
A very exciting story that takes our characters, and us into a world they know nothing about. Lots of action and very romantic.

Just one word to our author, if she wants our bride to have a happy marriage, NO (tear)drop pearls for the bride at a wedding. Very bad luck.
I loved every page.

A Baron in Her Bed

Revolutionary wars have a way of bringing out the best and the worst in people and so it is in this story, the first in the Spies of Mayfair series. I love historical settings and protagonists who push the boundaries; both Guy and Horatia do so. At a time when women rode side-saddle, Horatio not only rides astride but dressed in men’s clothing. And where a woman’s lot in life was to wed, she has chosen literary spinsterhood. Naturally, Guy will change that, though not before much danger threatens and draws them closer.

If you read closely, there are clues peppered throughout. I had a great time combing through and trying to work out who the villain was and I enjoyed the cast of characters, all of whom resonate as realistic and some downright interesting!

This was an exciting read with plenty of humorous moments and entertaining interactions. Certainly, I’m looking forward to the Earl of Strathairn’s story!

I have to admit what drew me to the book first was the cover. It was just... *sigh*.
I quite liked the book, it had an interesting plot although some of the twists were a teensy bit predictable however other parts I didn't guess at all and came to entirely wrong conclusions about which surprised me.
The hero's development was really sweet as he went from a complete flirt to someone who steadfastly loved another. I loved his sister who was funny and in some ways quite similar to heroine as they were both headstrong. The heroine was likable and I loved the fact that she kept on trying to save his life even when she sometimes did more bad than good.
Something I didn't like was the heroine's name... Horatia... I don't know, just not fond of it really.
Overall as a lover of historical fiction I would give this book a thumbs up.

Okay

This was a story that, I felt, started off very well....in fact, it was funny, suspenseful and interesting. It continued along that same line for a time and became less so as the story progressed...I mean, being hit on the head extremely hard several times over a period of days would likely kill someone.
As to characters, they are well described and defined, but I began disliking Horatia by the middle of the story for her impetuous, immature behavior....enough is enough!!!! She seems to never learn that she endangers herself as well as others constantly. By the end of the book I was ad it was finished. I don't know if I'd recommend to most readers. I see where this author has talent, though, and maybe just got carried away somewhat in the plot.

I found A Baron In Her Bed an intelligent read, keeping me guessing throughout and making me feel like I was really back in early 19th Century England. It was a thrilling tale, with a few twists and turns I didn't quite expect. The emotional journey and transformation for both of the main characters was believable and well-written. As this is apparently the first in a series, I very much look forward to reading the sequels.

In compliance with FTC guidelines, I must disclose that I received my copy of the book for free through Goodreads First Reads.

‘A Baron in her Bed’ is a delightful story of romance and espionage in Regency England. The action romps from country estates to the London salons and ballrooms of the aristocracy and brings that dazzling world alive. At times I was reminded of Georgette Heyer. I found the character of Guy really attractive and Horatia is a spirited heroine, with fewer inhibitions than most of Miss Heyer’s gals. Thoroughly recommended, in fact, I’m thinking of buying a copy for my mother’s birthday.

This is a dramatic, suspenseful, captivating and engrossing romantic story. The characters are intriguing and amusing. This is a Regency romance with a touch of intrigue. I regret that I found it a bit disappointing.
The intrigue element is fairly similar to other spy subplots in this kind of books. Nothing specially intricate, but enough to liven up the story.
On the other hand, the romance was quite weak. It doesn't evolve in a natural and gradual way. Instead, it is stilted and seems to "jump" from one state to the next without much continuity or credibility. Something similar happens with the main characters and their personalities: instead of a natural character arc, they seem to be undecided as to what their personality is or how they feel.
Added to that, I have two strong objections, two details that really detracted from the book's value. The first one is introducing a forced kiss/embrace as something romantic. Sorry, but even if I expect the characters to behave according to their time (which, by the way, they don't always do), I don't think that a 21st-century author should convey the message that "no doesn't always mean no". The second one is a great historical inaccuracy regarding inheritance (of states and of titles) that I found especially jarring. While the author goes to great lengths to mention certain political events of the time, this reinforcing the historical setting, part of the plot is based on the male protagonist claiming an aristocratic title in a completely unrealistic way (it doesn't take much research to learn that the way to proceed has nothing to do with convincing the person who has been running the state during the exile of the previous title holder that you are the right heir). The female protagonist's views on independence are also quite unrealistic, but I'm afraid that kind of behaviour/thought is quite extended in modern regencies, so I'll give it a wide berth.

Attraction and intrigue in an entertaining story...

This is a really interesting romance between Guy Fortesque,an English baron, and Horatia, or “Hetty”, the daughter of a retired English colonel. Guy is half English, his other half being French, he has just returned to his father’s homeland to claim his title and inheritance. Guy is an attractive man, with French sensibilities, and he and Hetty meet under a set of under dangerous yet rather humorous circumstances. Guy does not see Hetty for what she truly is at first, which is Hetty’s saving grace. But as the story goes on the two are brought together and their eyes are opened to an attraction neither can deny. The story is filled with intrigue, spies, wonderful characters, sinister plots, heated romance and was a great deal of fun!
I do hope that this author decides to write a story for Lord John Straithairn, as he was fascinating! I bet there’s a good story there as well.... I recommend this to readers of romance who enjoy some intrigue and excitement with their hea.

Baron Fortescue Aka Guy has returned to England after his father’s death! The family spent several years in exile after a duel fought by his father! Guy also had a French mother which explains his handsome exotic appearance!
Hetty lives in the countryside as a neighbor to Guy she finds him disguised and saves his life! This happens twice. I can not like Hetty at times and get very foolish defense of her godfather! Digswell is the home of Hetty and her father local gentry but not nobility!
The land is in a deplorable state and the tenants near starving and he is clearly addicted to laudanum!
The initial meeting is in disguise which Guy saw through and a friendship and courtship between these two occur!
Guy has secrets and honor! Hetty is spoiled and nosey and totally unused to London Society and endangers dangerous situations more with her nosy actions!
Love is what it is and usually doesn’t ask our advice but Guy went through so much and deserves better! The stars are for Guy! Bravo! What a man!!

Maggi Andersen does an excellent job of weaving suspense, Intrigue and wonderful characters together for a nonstop ride to the last page. Guy Fortescue comes to England after living in France with his parents, to claim the inheritance his father had left behind years ago. What he does not expect is to find someone trying to cause him harm. Miss Horatio Cavendish likes to live as she wants. Dressing as a boy when she rides, she comes upon Guy injured from a head wound. She nurses him and while together he devises a plan for them to have a "fake" engagement. With them both working together to figure out who wants him dead, they begin to feel drawn together and their affection is not really pretend anymore. Can they figure out the mystery before Guy is actually killed and can they be together in the end? This was a delightful story that left me smiling and wanting more in this series as quickly as possible!!

This romance novel started strong but then fizzled for me. The beginning of the story has the hero returning to England from France after the napoleonic wars to claim his rightful place as Baron of Fortescue. However someone is trying to kill him. Our heroine, Hetty, saves him but is dressed as a boy since she was out riding without her father’s permission. The Baron quickly discovers her real identity and the attraction develops. However, the author seems to try to develop a mystery around the fact that the estate Baron comes home to is in total disrepair despite having been funded by the Baron from afar and managed by Hetty’s godfather. Attempts continue on Guy’s life. I won’t do any real spoilers but suffice to say the plot has several twists and turns (which is fine) but the characters seem to become increasingly whiny and insecure. Hence my comment about fizzling. To be fair though - this book is probably between a 2 and 3 rating - but based on the beginning I expected more.

Guy Fortescue comes to England to claim his inheritance, Rosecroft Hall, abandoned over thirty years ago when his father fled to France after killing a man in a duel. But England proves to be a dangerous place - someone wants Guy dead. I really enjoyed Guy and Hetty’s story. Their story goes from the country to the ballrooms. This book has a lot of content, but was easy to read. I liked the characters and the story. I have enjoyed Maggi Andersen other stories and I liked this one. I would definitely recommend it.

I was delighted to be able to read The Baron’s Betrothal. It had a very unique plot with unexpected twists and a good pace that keeps the reader entertained until the very end. I found the characters to be very entertaining during their interactions with one another and enjoyed watching them trying to second guess what the other was thinking. I appreciate that the sexual scenes were done very tastefully and in a rather limited quantity. Personally, I didn’t want to put the book down until I was completely finished. In my opinion, Guy and Hetty will provide you with a very well researched, fast moving, romance novel. I can easily recommend this lovely story to all my friends who enjoy mysteries and romance.

Great Book

I enjoyed reading this book by
Maggi Anderson !
Guy Truesdale, the sixth Baron Fortescue, was half British on his father’s side and French on his mother’s side. Their home was set on fire in the beginning of the revolution. Guy, his parents and sister were able to flee but they were unable to find Guy’s twin Vincent. Guy is now in England to accept his inheritance.
Living in the same area at Malforth Manor, Digswell is Hetty Cavendish. She dresses like a boy so she can ride her fathers horse, The General. While she is riding she sees Guy on the ground with a head wound. This encounter starts a chain of events that involves Hetty and Guy.
This is a book that I think anyone would enjoy!

Surviving the fire that killed his older brother, Guy Truesdale, arrives in England to claim his title and inheritance. Unfortunately, someone in England has decided he must die. Hetty is not your typical miss. She prefers to dress in men’s clothing to escape the restrictions set by her father and for females. She rescues and nurses Guy, after he has been attacked. Realizing that he needs her, he devises and she agrees to a “fake” engagement. As they spend more time together attempting to solve the mystery, the two of them fall in love. The mystery is revealed at the end of the book and is a bit of a surprise.
