Bűnös Budapest

Gyilkos cselédek, svindlerek, kasszafúrók, transzneműek és ledér nőszemélyek töltik meg a füstös lebujokat, zugkifőzdéket és a hírhedt Conti utcát, és keltik életre a múlt századi Budapestet, megmutatva annak kevésbé elegáns, ám talán éppen ezért olyan érdekes arcát. Ugyanakkor bármilyen szórakoztató is ez a miliő, bármilyen kisstílűek a bűnök és pitik a bűnözők, a Bűnös Budapest ciklus folyamatosan arra emlékeztet minket, hogy az elmúlt száz évben a színfalak talán részben megújultak, ám voltaképpen semmi sem változott a fővárosban.

About the author

Vilmos Kondor is the internationally acclaimed creator of the Budapest Noir series and one of the major voices in contemporary European crime fiction. His debut novel Budapest Noir was first published in Hungary in 2008 and quickly became a landmark work, launching a seven-book cycle that blends hard-boiled storytelling with the turbulent history of mid-20th-century Hungary.

The series has been translated into fourteen languages, published in the United States, and adapted into a feature film. Kondor’s protagonist, crime reporter Zsigmond Gordon, investigates murder and corruption in a city caught between dictatorships, wars, and shifting political shadows — stories where history and noir meet on every page.

Kondor holds a degree from Sorbonne, and he is teaching physics and mathematics in a high school in western Hungary. When he is not working on a new novel, he enjoys long walks and making jams — especially on the days when the plot refuses to cooperate.

Not bad at all. I've nothing against short stories. Some were shorter, some longer, but mainly, I'm happy and not a little proud to have finished another book in Hungarian. :)
And my pet peeve around Zsigmond: The smoking never, ever stops. Its image was different in the twenties-thirties, I know, but still. Not. One. Page without him lighting up. Ugh.

I just love Vilmos Kondor's writing, just love the Bűnös Budapest series and love Zsigmond Gordon. That's it. You cannot give me enough of them, and this was the last book I had left from the series.. very sad. But I have other books by him, and believe me I will read all of them. I have learned so much from him about the Budapest and the history of that caotic time, and enjoyed every minute of it! I am I think the most sad about the fact that I just cannot recommend the whole of it, because it haven't (yet - lets hope) translated into english - just the first one, Budapest Noir - read it! It is amazing. One of my favourite hungarian authors nowadays. And these short stories! Just like the best kind of dark chocolate bonbons - loved all of them.

Nem annyira rajongtam a novellákért (ez személyes: szeretem, ha egy hangulat tovább tart), mint a regényekért, de az biztos, hogy izgalmas, mikor felismerjük egyik-másik meghatározó alakját.
