Jonathan Duncan buried his wife and most of his faith in the same year.
Since then he's lived inside blueprints and eighty-hour work weeks, because work never asks how he's holding up. Then one night his sister-in-law pounds on his door at three o'clock in the morning. She's frightened, running and has her two-year-old asleep on her shoulder.
By sunrise, Shawna is gone.
Rose isn't.
Jonathan can design a building for anyone in Spokane. He has no idea how to raise a little girl.
Kylie Hawthorne knows exactly what that costs. A single mother waitressing nights and finishing her degree between shifts, she was abandoned once herself, and she's learned to keep her heart on a short leash. She takes the nanny job because she needs the money. She doesn't plan on loving a child who isn't hers or the quiet wounded man who hired her.
But Kylie made God a promise, and she means to keep she will not build a family with a man who can't lead one. Not for her son. Not for anyone.
And Jonathan is still furious at a God who stood by and watched his wife die.
Before Marie was gone, she pressed her wedding ring into his hand and told him he'd know when it was time to love again. Two years later, he's certain she was wrong.
He has no idea what God is about to do with the wreckage.
A Reason To Live is a closed-door Christian romance about grief, grace, and the family God assembles out of the pieces we never would have chosen. Guaranteed happily ever after. No cliffhanger.

A Reason to Live: An Inspirational Romance: A Reason to Love Book 1 is written by T. K. Chapin. This book is really good and sweet. It has no graphic sex, violence, or language in it. It makes you want to be better than you start out being when you start the book. Jonathan Dunken is still trying to adapt to the death of his beloved wife, Marie. She had been the most wonderful person and wife he had ever known. She had the greatest belief in G od that he had known too. However, at her death, he pulled away from his faith because of his dislike of God’s having taken Marie. Luckily for him, he was able to work from home as he and his Brother had started an architectural design company when Jonathan quit his other job. Luckily in that when his sister-in-law came to him for help when she left her abusive husband, he was able to provide a place for her and her daughter, Rose to spend a few days. Little did he know that he was about to become an instant father when his sister-in-law left Rose with him. How was he to cope with a toddler and still work? Easy, hire a nanny. Kylie had been orphaned when she was seven. She was sent to Grandma Faith’s home where when Grandma decided to stop being a Foster mother, Grandma Faith adopted Kylie. Now Kylie and her son were living with Grandma Faith, taking care of her. However, she needed a better job and one that paid more than being a waitress. When the job with Jonathan came up, she took it. It paid well enough she was able to quit her jobs. Now she just had to keep one little girl and stay unattached from her employer.
A Reason to Live, book one by T. K. Chapin in his latest series A Reason to Love is a touching story showing how God’s love is there no matter the brokenness of an individual. Jonathan and Kylie’s story will pull at your heartstrings. Kylie’s past was not easy and Jonathan is caring for his two year niece whose mother is heading down the wrong path in life. Sweet little Rose brought the two together when Jonathan needed a nanny. Kylie loved God and Jonathan had put Him on the back shelf after the death of his wife. Will there be a way for Kylie’s faith and witness brings healing to Jonathan?
Chapin’s brought true to life issues in society today into this easy to read tale even with tears flowing to show how broken lives can be healed with dreams fulfilled by God’s amazing love, grace and mercy. This is the first book I’ve read by Chapin, but it will not be my last one. I’m glad to discover another Christian author creating stories that are wholesome without any violence, sex and profanity in it.
Being awakened at three in the morning by his sister-in-law, Shawna Gillshock and her two-year-old daughter, Rose was not expected by Jonathan Dunken. He had not seen her since his wife, Marie’s funeral four years ago. She was asking for a place to stay because she had been beaten by her boyfriend. Although Jonathan wanted to say no, he could hear his wife saying…let her stay.
From the time she was young, Shawna’s life resembled a train wreck and she would often show up on Jonathan and Marie’s doorstep needing a place to stay. Jonathan was not always inclined to be so willing, but Marie often reminded him to imitate Christ and to remember God’s love is unconditional.
What Jonathan didn’t expect was to wake up the next morning and find that Shawna was gone, but had left Rose. He had no idea what he was supposed to do with a two-year-old, but he knew he would do everything in his power to give her a good life and keep her safe.
Jonathan met Kylie Hawthorne, who was a waitress at Evans. Her interaction with Rose caused him to ask her to quit her job and become Rose’s babysitter. Kylie was more than willing because she would be closer to her sick grandmother and her son, plus the pay was better and most of all…she loved children. Her friend thought she was crazy, but she felt it was part of God’s plan.
As Jonathan struggled to come to grips with his wife’s death and raising Rose, Kylie helped him to learn to give his struggles over to God.
T.K. Chapin brings us another book filled with God’s love. As you read the story of Jonathan, Marie, Rose and Kylie, be sure to have the tissues close because you will need them as you become so involved in their lives. You will feel the depth of their pain, sadness and joy. God is always in control no matter what the situation is. His love is boundless.
Disclaimer: I received this ARC eBook from the author, T.K. Chapin for free to read and review. I was not required to give a favorable review only an honest review, nor was I compensated for my review. All thoughts and comments in this review are my own.
Let me start by saying I plan to read the next book in the series and I truly appreciate that this isn’t merely a “clean” or “sweet” book but truly a Christian one where the reader is made to think about matters of faith. But as a foster/adoptive momma and an early childhood educator, I have two fairly serious (to me) issues with this book. Neither of the foster situations seemed to have any modicum of knowledge about how the system truly works. I found two specific circumstances pretty implausible with a host of other minor things. But this is a fairly short novel, so I overlooked those and read on. Near the end, the principal of a school offers a sub position to an aide in the pre-K class for the day. The principal says something like “I know it’s only pre-k” as if that’s not *really* teaching and if she screws up royally, it won’t matter. I know many principals who aren’t dedicated early childhood educators feel that way so, again, I let it slide. Then, the teacher thinks something along the lines of “it’s only 4 year olds” but that it’s still “at least” teaching. That really made me mad. As if 4 year olds (or 3 yos, 2 yos, toddlers, or babies for that matter!) are lesser because of their age? Stage of development? Because they learn best through play? I’m not sure. And I doubt that was truly the Author’s intent. But it’s an absolute pet peeve of mine when preschoolers and their teachers are treated less than. I kept hoping for the redeeming moment when she realized it was very hard work to teach the littles and very important work to lay a foundation for the later years but it never came. So, yes, I’ll give one more book a try, but this author is sitting at two strikes with me. I feel like the tiniest bit of research into either topic, simply talking to someone involved in the foster system and an early childhood educator, could’ve resolved both issues without changing any major themes or plot lines in the book and without adding much to the length.
I enjoyed this first book in the new A Reason to Love series. A primary goal of the author is to share the love of God in his writing through stories of men and women who are imperfect, just like all of us, but who need to sense the loving touch of God on their lives. Jonathan and Kylie are featured in this story. You will have to read the book to learn about their personal struggles before they meet each other and how God deals with them individually to bring them both to a better place. The key life lesson I gathered from the story is that God can provide healing and hope for all of us. Things do not always go the way we want them to but God will walk with us through whatever is before us. Sometimes he uses those around us to help us. The ultimate answer is in Him through His Son Jesus, but we need to allow Him to guide us to that place of healing. Too many turn to other relationships to seek what only comes from God. Kylie was in a better place spiritually when she met Jonathan than he was, but she had other issues to overcome. The book is not lengthy but it delivers a powerful message. I received an advance copy of this book from the author. This is my honest review. All opinions are strictly my own.
I don't normally read Christian books, for no specific reason, but I must say that I might start to do so. This romantic story made me feel like there is much more to a romance book than the relationship between a man and a woman.
Jonathan and Kylie found each other when both needed guidance. Throughout the book the mention of God and Jesus made me feel closer to my faith. It made me think that God does work in mysterious ways, even though this is a fictional story, these things can actually happen in real life.
Jonathan lost his faith after losing his wife. Kyle's faith grew more and more with time and it is hard for her to accept a man who's faith is broken. I believe that this made me feel a bit mad with her. She should have stick around more and try to guide him a bit. She claimed that she loved him though she left him to fight alone when he needed someone close. Luckily, with God's help, Jonathan managed to go back to his faith and he accepted that he can't control everything. He was able to enjoy life again and he accepted that whatever happens is because God has a better plan.
This was a cute and fast read. I really enjoyed it! ❤📖
Jonathan was a man who was still grieving his wife after four years when his wife’s sister arrives on his doorstep with a two year-old, claiming she had nowhere to go I needed to get away from the abusive boyfriend. Overnight his sister-in-law decided her child was better off with him and not her so she leaves Rose with Jonathan.
After a week or so, he realized he couldn’t work from home with a two year-old so, quite by accident, suddenly had a nanny. She could help him with household chores, take care of Rose and receive a decent income.
Kylie was a young woman who went through some rough’s patches eventually coming back to Christ in a big way. Working for a handsome single man who did not claim Christ as his Savior had its challenges.
What I liked about this story was the author's spiritual honesty. So many Christian writers will allow a relationship between a Christian and a non-Christian to go on. But in this case, the author clearly knows the Word of God and put a halt to a future between them. There’s more to the story than just that, but that’s what I picked up and was please about.
Jonathan is a bitter workaholic widower who has lost his faith in God. Kylie is a single mother, divorced from an abusive husband who lives with Grandma Faith, who adopted her out of the foster system. Jonathan's life changes when his niece is left with him. Now his life has to be more than work. While having a discussion about needing a nanny, Jonathan meets Kylie. She fills the need for a nanny and he fit her need of a job. Neither is in a place for a relationship but feelings develop. Can he overcome losing his wife? Can he regain his faith and learn to live again? Can she trust her judgement? How can she love a man who isn't a man of faith? Can these two overcome seemingly impossible barriers and find each other and the real reason to live? This is the first book in a new series by TK Chapin. It's well written with characters you care about and want to know. The storyline deals with real life issues and heart breaking events. I loved this book and read it in less than a day. The author graciously gifted me with an ARC in exchange for my honest review.
An often told story: after the death of his wife, Jonathan Dunken despairs and stops believing in God and Jesus. When fate leaves his niece on his doorstep, his new nanny, Kylie, is slowly thawing his heart, but can he forget his first wife and give Kylie what she needs? After a good beginning, I am sorry to say the story development got stuck for a long time with Jonathan's struggle between his lost faith and his growing attachment to Kylie, but it doesn't really focus on the struggle as such, or on his long path. All of a sudden, hey presto! a moment of revelation and here we go. Then the ending - and I cannot say more without spoilers - was as rushed in my opinion as his fighting through to regain his faith. A good story until about the middle, then it is just sort of the same dilemma, without any development or progress, until all of a sudden, everything is solved. Having said that, I did like the story, and I would not be able to put together something like that, if at all. Thank you to the author.
Doubt. How can He let . . . happen? Why me? Why did you take. . . ? We all experience doubts when things get difficult, don't go according to OUR plan, a good person dies. Yeah questioning is part of our human nature. Mr Chapin lays out the story of a man fighting with his faith after the death of his wife. A story of a man who realizes his faith and love was for the wrong reason. Time brought healing but only after she was used to prick his heart. She didn't preach. She didn't hassle or fuss. This author uses this word to introduce us to two people both dealing with faith and life to deliver a message. What message you receive is personal. For Jonathan it was a reason to live, a reason to love again God's way.
This was my first read by this author and I can't wait to read another. His way with words and delivery without preaching pricked my heart. Loved his characters and his style.
A very interesting story and also something to think about. I am almost tempted to read it again because I have mixed feelings about it. I want to say too much of the story is unbelievable, and yet the story seems to maybe be the author's real life story or a story of someone he knew closely.
It's clean, it's well done and it's gives God the glory. It's worth the read; however, I am sure it will get mixed reviews. What was good, was good, but too much background missing. e.g. As a grandmother, if I lost one daughter to any early death and another to drugs, there is no way I would allow a non-blood related uncle to get guardianship of my little grandchild - not in a million years and I highly doubt the court would award it.
The awful death of his wife has put Jonathan in a bad place. His faith is diminished and his life is now buried in work. He's young, broken and no idea how to fix it. Unknowingly, he gets his answer in a surprise visit one night. Kylie is solely focused on God and her son. She prays constantly for a job that will give her more time with her son and still the money she needs to get by. She knows God will provide. Even in the worst of times, He has been there for her. Between there broken pasts and unknown futures, Jonathan and Kylie both have a beautiful story. A Reason to Live is the perfect title for this book.
Jonathan has been struggling for years since he lost Marie. When her sister shows up with Rose his life changes. Kylie is trying to make a better life for her and Peter. When Jonathan asked her about working for him her life will also change. Watching these two try to not get into any kind of relationship will have you on the edge of your seat waiting to see what happens next. You will feel God working throughout this whole story. I had the honor to review this book for the author for a honest review. I would give this book a higher rating than a five star review if I could.
I really loved Jonathan and Kylie story. The book could also be called a reason to love again. Jonathan wife had passed away from cancer, I love how the book covers his marriage with Marie and the childhood of Kylie. With the chapters about the past showing their ages so was easy to know the past from the present. Love how Jonathan takes care of his niece Rose. So many interesting characters in the book. Also Kylie past is a very inspiring past story. I definitely recommend buying this book, very much worth reading.
Author T.K. Chapin tackles a tough subject and does it with class. Broken relationships. Broken hearts. And God is right there in the middle of the hurt.
This story is full of God loving and forgiving. Mending the broken pieces and bringing them together to create a new creature. But can the characters of the story do the same? Life isn’t always that easy. A Reason to Live will challenge you in many ways. I recommend it!
I received a complimentary copy of this book but was not required to leave a review.
Sometimes, it's just so hard to find that reason, especially after losing someone dear to you. Grief can send you into some dark places you thought you'd never go. It happened to me. And it happened to Jonathan, the main character in this book. Thankfully, there is a Light to guide us, even in that dark and painful place. Chapin writes beautifully about that. A lot of wisdom here in this book. (And more wisdom to come in the second book, A Reason To Believe.) I am so glad I read this book. It definitely spoke to me.
I really enjoyed this book. I liked the characters. I also liked that both of the main characters had to grow and learn and that they both influenced each other. I thought their burgeoning relationship was sweet. I liked the faith aspects to the story too. I would say that this book isn't for everyone because it is a Christian romance so there are religious aspects to it. If that is not your cuppa you won't enjoy this book. But I think it is a very uplifting story that reminds the reader of what is important in life. I like this author and will read more of his books!
Every new book by Mr. Chapin becomes my new favorite. This story was exceptional. It is filled with real life, the spiritual struggles, lreaning to love God above everyone and everything, finding God's love is always surrounding His children, trusting in His plan and His timing; so much depth in the story and wonderful, cplex characters. I couldn't lay this one down.
This book was very good, cute until 3/4 of the way through. I cannot handle a book that the main character's can't decide what they want in a relationship so they go back and forth. In this case they separated for 1 1/2 years. When they come across each other again the story went to fast then cut to short. She agreed to marry him the poof the story was done. I feel it needs an epilogue. I'm not inspired to buy another one of this author's books.
Here are two people in a realistic situation dealing with losses, mistakes, and uncertain feelings, and I appreciate how they trust to help them work out their problems.
I thought the pace was a little slow toward the end as they both got a handle on their feelings and moved ahead, but all in all it was a worthwhile read. I especially appreciated their carefulness in not letting passion wipe out principles.
The illustration alone brought me to love this book. It was relatively short and it was easy to relate to little Rose and her new daddy. It was not too believable that his father-in-law as a preacher would have an evil heart but quite admirable that Jonathan would forgive him with the Lord's help. The story line was predictable when he offered the waitress a job as Nanny but still enjoyable
I throughly enjoyed my adventurer with Jonathan and Kylie. The spiritual journey they both took was eye opening for me as well. I was harboring unforgiveness with my nephew. He with a friend stole from us to pay for his/there drug problem. He stole my mother's engagement ring. I from time to time think of that and I'm upset all over again. I'm going to try to work through that and let it go. Thank you so much for writing this book.
First novel from this author and I loved it. It’s refreshing and hopeful to see a Christian romance novel with God at the center of everything. I loved how having a real relationship withGod and a grounded faith had been a nonnegotiable condition for their relationship even when it brought them heartbreak and pain and how God worked around their difficulties and circumstances for His glory and for their good.

I loved this story how God brought people together through the loss of loved ones and how they learned to forgive. It also showed me how I was not deep in reading my Bible like T K wrote in the story. Was an amazing book about love, forgive and happiness. Was very touching and emotional. Thanks T K for your love for God in writing Christian books.
Such a Great Story of Love, Faith, and Loss. Jonathan lost his wife to cancer, and lost his Faith after his wife. Then he became the Father of his niece Rose that was abandoned by her mother. He then found a Christian woman Kylie to be a Nanny to Rose. God works in mysterious ways. He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds. Psalm 147:3 This is the first time i read this author, and i am not disappointed.
Oh my goodness, what a heart wrenching story of how loss of a spouse was handled by the widower. So very well written and with such compassion. Will a love interest help? Will a child help? How about God? These questions are what drives this story in a manner that kept me reading on and on. I received an ARC from the author. Opinions are my own.
This book is so good! The characters are wonderful. I enjoyed reading about them and how they their lives came together. I love how ordinary people with real problems get help through the Lord. This is a beautiful story! I look forward to reading the next book! I was given an ARC. The review is not required and is given entirely on my own.
A reason to live is another great book by T.K Chapin! The cover of the book caught my immediate attention. When a child is involved it makes the story so much more emotional and meaningful. This book is filled with heartache, growing strength and overcoming the past that is holding you back by the mere act of forgiveness.
