The small mountain town of Blue Ridge Valley is the home of three best friends, Jenny, Autumn, and Savannah. Each woman believes she has her life perfectly planned, but there is a saying in the mountains... If everything is coming your way, you're in the wrong lane.
In Just Jenny, Jenny Nance has a plan – save enough money to tour the world. The desire to traipse the globe is a dream she once shared with her twin sister. Jenny made a deathbed promise to her sister that she would go to all the places they had fantasized visiting together. Nothing will entice her to break her vow to Natalie, not even the sexy new Blue Ridge Valley police chief... No matter how attracted she is to him.
Dylan Conrad left the Chicago Police Department to accept the position as Chief of Police in Blue Ridge Valley. Burned out and haunted by a tragedy of his own, he needs to get away from the memories tormenting him. He's hoping to find peace in the small mountain town, but the quirky residents, an infamous moonshiner, an errant prized bull, and a feisty redhead by the name of Jenny weren't quite what he had in mind.
An award winning author, Sandra Owens lives in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina. Her family and friends often question her sanity, but have ceased being surprised by what she might get up to next. She’s jumped out of a plane, flown in an aerobatic plane while the pilot performed thrilling stunts, has flown Air Combat (two fighter planes dogfighting, pretending to shoot at each other with laser guns), and rode a Harley motorcycle for years. She regrets nothing.
Sandra is a 2013 Golden Heart® Finalist for her contemporary romance, CRAZY FOR HER. CRAZY FOR HER is the first book in her bestselling series about the men of K2 Special Services. Book two, SOMEONE LIKE HER, is available now, and book three, FALLING FOR HER, is due out this fall. In addition to contemporary romances, Sandra writes Regency romances.
This is yet another story about a Hero who is grieving for his dead wife. I think lately that this is the only theme I seem to come across whether it is in the blurb or not.
Anyhoo... Hero was a cop in Chicago and married to a woman that he had been in love with. Even though she was "high maintenance" and had "depression" issues throughout their marriage, he was still widely in love with her until he came home one day and found her having sex with his partner & friend. Hurt, he asked her for a divorce and she ended up committing suicide.
Two years later, Hero feeling guilty & haunted by his wife who talks to him in his sleep every night, leaves Chicago to start fresh in a new town where he meets a red headed bartender, Jenny, who he is immediately smitten with, but all he wants is to have some fun while he is in town.
Jenny made a promise to her dead twin sister to travel all over the world. She befriends Dylan & tries her hardest to not fall for him because she knows he is still grieving for his wife & because she will be leaving soon.
While the MC's were likable, the fact that Hero constantly talked to his dead wife & we were given a window into their marriage of how much he loved & "worshiped her body", was a big turn off for me because I felt that heroine settled for second best. This is the theme for these type of reads where Hero was in love with his dead wife and still grieving. It makes this reader at least feel that the main story is between the ex & Hero, with heroine always being the one he "settles" for because he is lonely vs. in love.
I will say that in this story, the Hero states "It wasn’t that I was still in love with my wife. I wasn’t. I would always love her, though, but for the way we’d once been, not how we’d ended. By then, I hadn’t liked her very much". (though he did say that even though she had hurt him, he still wanted her & not wanted her. 😒
While I get the author was trying to tell a story here about a guy who was hurt & grieving for his wife, as well as feeling guilty, it ended taking away any romance that was building between the Hero & heroine until all I could focus on was his previous relationship.
This is a safe read and this is just my personal view, so don't let it stop you from reading it if this theme doesn't bother you...
Just Jenny has both cussing (including f-bombs) and on-page sex. If those things will cause you to leave a bad review, this might not be the book for you. This is book one of the Blue Ridge Valley series but it completely stands alone.
This book is one of my favorite Sandra Owens books ever, and that is saying something because I have enjoyed all of her books. Ms. Owens just has a way of making me believe in happily ever after. This book deals with some really serious and heartbreaking topics, but it has a ton of humor, laced through it that, coupled with the heat and fantastic story make the serious things not feel so heavy. Ms. Owens has a killer sense of humor that she displays throughout all of her books, and this one is no exception. I found myself highlighting a bunch of moments – both subtle and blatant - that made me laugh enough that I wanted to be able to go back and re-read them later. I love it when that happens.
Another thing Ms. Owens does so well is to shape characters that are relatable and so incredibly likable. Dylan's backstory was so heartbreaking. More than once I got teary-eyed as we learned about his past - and present – angst. The more that I read, the more that I just wanted him to get through it and to start to feel human again. One of my favorite things about Dylan was that he let Jenny and Sarah fight their own battles. While he supported them and could played the Big Man Hero, he trusted both to deal with their own issues – I loved that. Jenny's back story was also heartbreaking, but it was also really sweet, which might sound strange once you learn about it. I loved her devotion to the past (trying to be vague) and the way she tried to honor someone who deserved that devotion, while also living her own life and being her own person. Put those two damaged but great characters together and you have a couple of fantastic characters who just deserved to be happy together. It would have been impossible to root against them.
Ms. Owens also nails small-town life perfectly in this book. Blue Ridge Valley was the epitome of a small town, complete with characters who filled the book with funny moments and fun stories without overpowering the main story. I really enjoyed the foreshadowing and hints about the next book and I am already looking forward to it coming out.
If you're a fan of books that have a huge amount of heart and humor wrapped around a mystery theme and that also has the ability to make you tear up, you should read this book. I highly recommend it.
This is the first contemporary novel I've read by Sandra Owens. I'm a huge fan of her historical novels, so I thought that I'd start with this new series. Am I glad that I did? Absolutely!
I loved these characters. I feel like the biggest small town gossip because I was eating up the details of everyone's lives, plotting matrimonial setups, my mouth was watering over Mary's doughnuts and I was tittering about each of her hair color changes just as if I was working at the town gossip rag with Gloria.
Dylan Conrad is an excellent hero. I loved him. Who wouldn't want to meet and be loved by a man like him. Jenny is a lucky girl.
I can't wait to read Autumn's book next month. I knew she needed an HEA. Just because she had a wedding in this book didn't mean he was the one! Poor Savannah, I'm sure her book will break my heart.
Collecting cats? When I read that line, my mind immediately went back to my favorite Sandra Owens book - The Letter. Time for another read!
I loved this book. It was well written. The setting was so perfect. I felt like I was right there. The plotting was excellent. Read it, you won't be disappointed!
This is the beginning of Ms Owens new series about three childhoods girlfriends now adults. Each hoping to follow their dreams. The series is not only a departure from her previous series, but the style is as well. Each chapter gives the reader alternate POV of the main characters . Not used to this format, it took me a little to get into the story but once I acknowledged the style, it was easy to be engaged not only in the story line but also in the townspeople and their uniqueness. The story belongs to new hired Police Chief Dylan Conrad and Jenny Nance, a woman that will soon be fulfilling her dying sister’s wish to travel the world. But destiny has a different agenda as these two get involved. Their individual story is heartbreaking . As time passes, their relationship evolves ,and while one of them starts to heal their emotional scars, the other one questions their plans. Once again, Ms. Owens will capture your hearts and delivers a heartbreak but also heartwarming story filled with action, loss, hope and love. Can’t wait to see what else the author has in store for us in her next book. I voluntarily read this copy. The opinions expressed are solely my own.
Just Jenny is just fantastic. In fact, it's five stars fantastic.
It's the first book in Sandra Owens' Blue Ridge Valley Series and if this book is any indication, the rest of the series will be a must read.
The book centers around Jenny who plans to travel the world to honor a deathbed wish from her twin sister.
To complicate matters, Jenny starts to have feelings for the new police chief of Blue Ridge Valley when Chief Dylan Conrad steps in to help Jenny get rid of the boyfriend who refuses to accept their relationship is over.
Dylan is fighting his own demons so the road won't be easy for couple due to their seemingly insurmountable obstacles.
I loved all the references to the way of life, the quirky, hilarious characters, one runaway bull, and the "tell it like it is" mentality.
You'll want to stay up all night to finish this one. Then, you'll anxiously await book two.
I absolutely loved Just Jenny!! It's Book one, in the highly anticipated new series, Blue Ridge Valley. I've been excited to read it, & it was everything I thought it would be, & a million times more. You will fall in love with Jenny & Dylan. It's a sizzling, sexy, funny, & touching story. Jenny has lived her whole life in Blue Ridge Valley. Her dream & the promise she made, is to travel, & see the world. Dylan has been hired as the town's new police Chief. He had been working for the Chicago PD. Dylan was in desperate need for a chance, & to leave all the bad memories behind. The story really pulled all my heartstrings. It is a beautiful story and makes you believe there really is true love out there. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND FOR EVERYONE!!!
Simply perfect! This book has it all...laughter, romance, angst and passion! Sandy has a way of weaving an intricate story of love and loss into an amazing menagerie of characters. Dylan gives such an amazing “voice” in the book that it becomes a warm blanket - especially when he meets Jenny. Not Jennifer or Jenn but Jenny. (Insert swoon!). This is yet another masterpiece of a relatively unknown author. In a world of Social media Fanatical frenzy, it’s nice to see an author who takes her time to write an authentic novel that you will never forget.
I get very excited every time Sandra releases a new book because I love her writing and know I will be taking a wonderful journey with her incredibly charismatic characters. Jenny is sassy, and incredibly strong. Losing her twin sister at a young age has given her life focus and determination. Travel was her goal until Police Chief Dylan came along. Dylan is my hero. I’ve fallen hard for this special guy. He is lovable, loyal, good hearted and devoted to making the world a better place. His interactions with everyone in his new home town was very entertaining. Just like Jenny I kept finding more reasons to love him. Loved the instant connection between Jenny and Dylan. They compliment each other perfectly. Their story was a joy to read. There are also lots of wonderful side characters like Hamburger Harry. They add a wonderful dimension to the story. Sandra knows how to pace her stories beautifully because once I started reading I couldn’t stop. I found the story very relatable and so the thoughts and emotions are real and felt strongly throughout. Whether I was laughing or crying with the characters, I was right there alongside them. Brilliant! I am very excited to continue reading the Blue Ridge Valley series. Highly recommended!
Loved the Blue Ridge Valley setting and the cast of characters and the laugh out loud antics they get into. But that aside their was indeed a lot of serious going on. Dylan Conrad, Chief of Police in Blue Ridge Valley - what a Hottie and I definitely have a crush on him. Really strong multilayered character that drew me right in and I couldn't wait to see what life experiences made him the man he is. And then there was Jenny Girl! As strong as she was - with her life plans all laid out in front of her - I really thought Dylan brought out a hidden depth in her character! What an amazing journey they have!!!! Great book - highly recommend!!! Sandra Owens has become a must buy author for me.
So looking forward to reading Autumn, and Savannah's story
"May the love I see in your eyes last a lifetime and beyond."
Just Jenny is the first book in Ms. Owens new, Blue Ridge Valley series. Following 3 childhood friend's. Jenny, Autumn and Savannah. Ms. Owens first small series. I love small town romance. And this is probably Ms. Owens best work to date. Probably my absolute favorite of her books. And I love everything she does. I loved the new police chief, Dylan Conrad. He's probably going to be my favorite Sandra hero forever. And again, I love them all. He was perfect. Kind. Honorable, a gentleman. Drop dead gorgeous. Swoon worthy. I liked how he ran the police station. . I literally swooned every time he called Jenny, 'Jenny Girl.' I really liked that each chapter alternated between heroine and hero's point of view. I like when authors do that. I loved all the quirky small town characters. Hamburger Harry and his mother, cracked me up. I'm even a character in the book. A waitress. Jenny's co worker and friend. I don't know how she does it, but Ms. Owens continually outside herself. I look forward to reading All Autumn.
Just Jenny was amazing! I couldn’t help but fall in love with Jenny and Dylan. Jenny is spunky and knows exactly what she wants and doesn’t let things stand in the way, even if it means letting something special go. Dylan is one sexy cop trying to start over in a new town. Their stories had me in tears. I love how the story itself unfolds and how their bond grows stronger even though their pasts continuously interferes. Some of the other characters had me laughing or spit-fire mad. Daisy was the best, hands down. She stole the spotlight in my opinion...lol. I love how you can feel the emotions while being drawn into the story. Some stories you can just read it and move on but others, like this one, you can actually feel like you’re part of it. I would definitely recommend this book as a must read.
This is the first of a new series about 3 friends in Blue Ridge Valley. Jenny is working to save money so she can fulfill her life dream of traveling the world. Nothing is going to keep from her dream including, Dylan, the new sheriff. Dylan has moved to Blue Ridge from Chicago, where he worked as a police officer, to recover from a bad case of burnout. Neither was expecting the sparks that started flying as soon as they met. Blue Ridge Valley is a quaint little town near the Appalachian Trail. In addition to Jenny and Dylan Blue Ridge Valley is full of quite a number of interesting residents including a wayward bull. This was a fun read that I highly recommend.
A Sweet, Steamy Love Story, and a Dog Named Daisy!
If you love a sweet, well written love story with relatable characters and quickly small towns, you will love Just Jenny. Sandra Owens's latest Series is just as page turning as her earlier Aces and Eights Series. Small town girl with a need to travel the world falls for a big city cop who is running from his past. A great read. I can't wait for the next book, All Autumn.
I have absolutely adored getting to know Jenny and Dylan. A deathbed promise to her sister almost cost Jenny her HEA. I can't wait to read All Autumn and see what happens next in Blue Ridge Valley
I love Jenny and Dylan's love story from the first time they laid eyes on each other. Who doesn't like a hero like Dylan who chases away Jenn's stalker ex-boyfriend or figures out the cold case of a missing prize winning bull. A refreshing easy to read love story.
This book was a delicious read, sexy, very funny with strong female characters. This small North Carolina town stole my heart, as did Jenn and Dylan. Full review to follow......
Wow just wow, if you love small towns, quirky folks, hot sex, and really good stories this is the book to read! I got so caught up I settled for peanut butter and jelly sandwich over cooking. I knew it would burn if I cooked! I hope y'all enjoy as much as I did! Hats off to a great 'bull story' too!
Having read Ms. Owens two other series, K2 and FBI books, this amazing story of Jenny and Dylan is a definite departure from what we have experienced from this author and I can say unequivocally that this is her finest work to date. The author’s ability to narrate in the first person is perfect and her knack of giving each character a sense of humor and just the right amount of angst makes them seem real and that talented writing shines throughout the book. Jenny and Dylan’s story draws the reader in and makes you want to live in small town USA where everyone knows everyone’s name and with a few exceptions looks out for one another. If you can only read one of this author’s books – make it this one. Looking forward with anticipation to reading Autumn’s story when it’s publish
It was a great book - loved the characters and how they were respectful of each other - Jenny and her 'hot" cop Dylan are a great guide to how to to treat someone when you are in a relationship - love and respect. Where Jenny has a dream and Dylan is unsure - he finally meets her on her world tour and while they start a new relationship they slowly close the doors on the past.
Geez! This will be hard to review. It was written in the first person, yuck, BUT worst of all was the narration of Felicity Hart. Every single time it was Jenny’s turn in the book I cringed, because every single time the female narrator spoke as Dylan he sounded just like a girl. Not even the slightest attempt to sound manly. WTH is wrong with so many female narrators? This is 2019! At least try! As to Edward Thomas, he was a joy to listen to. He actually sounded feminine when he was speaking as a female.
I’ll have to think really hard about listening to the other 2 books in this series. I don’t think I can listen to 2 more stories of men sounding like girls. For now, I’ll pass on All Autumn and Still Savannah.
As to the story itself? It was cute. I absolutely loved Dylan! He was one awesome cop. Jenny was kinda silly with her thoughts on choosing a promise she made to her dead sister about traveling the world, over a living Dylan, because her sister told Jenny she’s be there with Jenny. Um, no!
There was explicit sex in this book and the F-bomb was used 25 times.
This is the first in a new series about 3 BFF’s. And what a great start! This is Jenny and Dylan’s story. Jenny’s plans are set in stone. Honor the promise she made and travel the world. And nothing will change her plans…until Dylan Dylan is man running from his ghosts and working to forgive himself. He wants nothing to do with love…until Jenny Watching the two of them finding their way to each other is magic. They struggle to redefine their future while honoring their pasts. It’s truly one of the best stories I’ve read. I am already in love with this little town and its quirky, colorful residents. Bring on book 2!
This book has a great small town feel with colorful, quirky secondary characters. I really wanted to like this book. I've enjoyed everything else I've read by this author. I don't like first person perspective, especially with alternating first person every other chapter hence the rating.
With likable, adorable, yet realistic characters in a small Blue Ridge town setting, Sandra Owens opens the new series, Blue Ridge Valley, with an entertaining tale of Jenny Nance, the local, lovable, gorgeous, ginger bartender with wanderlust, and Dylan Conrad, the widowed, rich, and handsome new chief of police from Chicago. Jenny and Dylan connect from the first moment they meet. The attraction is mutual - they click, they bond, they get each other. And they learn to communicate, share the deepest darkest secrets and desires of their hearts and minds, while Jenny is showing Dylan the town and helping him to get to know the people living there. The goal is to keep the relationship status as a temporary fling, until Jenny's departure, but the murky feels and passion don't let them go that easily. That's what I liked the most about this story, the hard things the characters were willing to do, the talks they had, to be able to move on, to grow, and learn from the past. The story is told in the dual first person POV, and we get to know the thoughts and emotions swirling in the minds of the protagonists. The small town at the Appalachian is endearing and the images the author creates are vivid and fresh, neighboring. The ins and outs of the police department come very familiar from Dylan's point of view, at the same time giving a good look at the lives and the people living in the Blue Ridge Valley, alluring the mind of a reader to engage and be intrigued by books to come in the series. While this story is well written with an enticing storyline and endearing characters, just in my opinion, the first person POV, for me it lost some of the intensity and emotional angst and tension that could have been there, and at times it made the story move forward with a bit of a slow tempo as the characters get stuck with their thoughts as their reasoning go in circles. I enjoyed the gorgeous, pleasantly likeable and passionate yet sweet characters introduced in Just Jenny, and the small town living in the Blue Ridge Valley. The setting of the series is beguiling, and I am fascinated and invested to see how the series will develop. ~ Four Spoons
Just Jenny is the first book in Sandra Owen’s new Blue Ridge Valley Series and it’s a great start!
Jenny Nance lost her twin sister soon after graduating high school. Their dream was to travel the world together. Jenny has vowed to keep her sister’s dying wish to travel to all the places they wanted to see together. Working as a bartender, she’s been saving up over the years to make that dream come true. What she didn’t expect was to meet the hot, new police chief, Dylan Conrad a couple of months before she’s supposed to leave.
Dylan made a move from Chicago to Blue Ridge Valley to get away from the haunting memories of his past. He’s hoping to start a new life in a new town. When he meets Jenny at the bar shortly after arriving to start his new job, he’s immediately attracted to her. Unfortunately, she’s dealing with an ex-boyfriend who won’t take the hint that things are over between them and leave her alone. Luckily, Dylan is the new Chief of Police and helps her.
As the two of them start to spend more time together, the feelings are getting stronger between them. Dylan knows she’s leaving soon and is trying not to fall in love with her. He doesn’t want her giving up her dream and her sister’s wish, even it means losing someone who has come to mean so much to him. Jenny’s never had this strong of feelings before. She’s trying to deny those feelings, but it’s getting harder to. Jenny has some tough decisions to make. Leave as planned to travel the world and possibly lose Dylan forever or stay?
Heartfelt, sexy, funny, this small-town romance was a very enjoyable read! I’m really looking forward to the future books about Jenny’s best friends, Autumn and Savannah!
**I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review**
Fans of Sandra Owens will love Just Jenny. And if you are new to her books, Just Jenny is a terrific introduction. Told in the first person with alternating points of view between the hero and heroine, Just Jenny is the story of Jenny Nance, who is looking forward to traveling the world and keeping a promise to her dead twin, and Dylan Conrad, Blue Ridge Valley’s newest resident and new police chief looking for a fresh start after a tragedy. Dylan – big city, through and through – is charmed by both Blue Ridge Valley and Jenny. Jenny is smitten with Dylan but her dreams (and promise) stand in the way. Ms Owens’ writing makes you feel as if you are a part of Blue Ridge Valley, small town quirks and all. Will Dylan’s past ruin his future? Will Jenny walk away from what could be her future? And what really happened to Beauregard the Bull? You’ll need to read the story to find the answers. Enjoy.
Another great start to a new series plus a awesome author.
Dylan and Jenny had instant attraction. Dylan a new guy in town the new sheriff. Jenny a lifelong resident trying to stay clear of a ex boyfriend. Dylan helped her out and something they both weren't expecting began. Now if they can keep it simple and not let their hearts get involved but seldom does that happen.
