Inspired by the folktales of Scandinavia and her own childhood in the forest in Canada, visual artist and writer, Jessica Hiemstra, wrote a little story about a hare and a fox for Accent Decor. Not long after, the story developed its own story. Writing this odd little tale was the start of a marvellous collaboration - between women making paper in Nepal, master moldmakers in China and Sarah Bagle, Accent Decor's creative director. The story is bound in a beautiful handmade book.
What a gorgeous book, designed and printed on tree-free paper. This was a beautiful, sweet story that made a for a perfect Christmas morning read. This will absolutely become a family tradition each year as it was a gentle, warm way to start the day before the crazy festivities begin.
This is quite simply the most beautiful thing I have come across in a long time. The woodcut (?) illustrations and handmade book add a very physical and tactile element to an emotive story about a fox and a hare, written in sparse prose. It is a testament to the power nostalgia has over human emotion, and even though I have no actual nostalgic connection to this story, it struck me in a way that few things have since the innocence of childhood.
I think of this more as an art object than a book, but since I am given the opportunity to review it, I will gladly take it.
