R. Phoenix has an unhealthy fascination with contrasts: light and dark, heroes and villains, order and chaos. She believes that love can corrupt and power can redeem. Her muse is a sadomasochistic slave driver who thinks it's terribly amusing to give her the best ideas when she just got comfortable and warm in bed, and she passes on that torture to her readers. She also tries entirely too hard to be funny, and she mercilessly inflicts her terrible sense of humor upon anyone who speaks to her. She'd love it if you'd say hello!
Holy marshmallow! 😱 I looooove how wickedly depraved and unashamedly erotic this book is! 😁 What a tasty little gem! Two hours of listen and I couldn’t get enough of it. This definitely won’t be my last R. Phoenix. 😏
This book/audio comes with a heavy warning though. It includes puppy play, blood play, extreme humiliation kink, non-con/dub-con, exhibitionism, public humiliation and body altering. Yup, you name it, it has it. 😁
That being said, if the narrator were another one who performs better than this, this book would be a solid 5 stars for me. 😌 I’m not going to lie, the performance let me down a bit but it was decent enough so it didn’t ruin the story for me. The story though, definitely a 5 stars. 👏
In this dystopian world, vampires, werewolves or paranormal beings are on top of the food chain and humans, needless to say, are either food or pet to them. And when Caleb was captured by powerful and alluring vampire Liam, his life as he knows it will completely and utterly change. For better or for worse though, we’d have to wait and see. 😉
This book charmed and intrigued me so much, I’m willing to bend my own rule of “no ménage” for this one. 😁 This is the prequel story of the full length novel “Alpha” and that book will be ménage. And yes, I’m totally listening that one if it ever comes out on audio. My my, again, I couldn’t get enough of how utterly, wickedly scandalized and diabolically titillating this little gem is! 😍 Seriously, you have to read/listen this little gem if you are into puppy play and extreme humiliation kink.
Puppy was my first taste of the wonderfly depraved mind of R. Phoenix. I’ve had a few of this author’s books on my tbr shelf for way too long and I can see it’s time to move them up, starting with the first Fate of the Fallen book, Bought. This is a terrific plot for any fan of dark science fiction and I can’t wait to learn more about this world.
I love the idea of a futuristic world run by supernatural beings, where humans are forced to subject themselves to any means possible in order to survive. In Puppy, Caleb (the human) is partially relieved to be captured by Liam (the vampire). The fact that Liam is looking for a little kink from his new plaything is icing on the cake for Caleb.
Knowing it’s not wise to show his cards too soon, Caleb does his best to play down his reactions to Liam’s attentions. When Liam pushes all the right buttons, it’s hard to hide what the degrading play does for Caleb - but that’s okay, Liam likes it too.
I really enjoyed the way R. Phoenix infuses so much of the story with tongue in cheek humor (my favorite kind). That was very well done, and I’m curious to see if it is present in the rest of the series as well. Phoenix’s writing style flows very nicely and works with the fast paced, shorter novella of Puppy.
The author was kind enough to provide me with a copy of the audio version for the purpose of this review. The narrator, JJ Jenness, was a good choice for this one. Along with a strong, commanding voice for Liam, he added a little accent which made the vampire a bit exotic. His voice for Caleb was self assured, but grew more submissive over the course of the story as he realized this was his fate (and that he was lucky to have it).
Puppy was an excellent introduction to the writing of R. Phoenix, and I’m anxious to get started on the few books of the author’s which I already own. Hopefully there are more audio books planned as well.
a copy of the audio book was provided by the author for the purpose of my review
Well, this was a first for me...a vampire taking on a human pet and subjugating him to puppy play and humiliation.
The wrtiting was fairly straightforward an not overdone. The world building came through in bits and snatches, in what I thought was a very well done way considering the short length of this book.
So if non-con (kinda), humiliation, and puppy play are your thing, dig in!
I really feel like the Author was just teasing us with this one.. lol. It was way too short. Almost like right when it was getting to the really good and Super kinky Dirty parts the book just ends. *Pouts* I NEED MORE Dang it... Dark and yet still sweet... Which are total opposites but I think both can describe this book.. I'm not normally one to read books about vampires but I Love Human Puppies so this was great and I found it really interesting. I liked the book itself as well as the narration and the story pulled me in from the first few sentences. First time with the narrator JJ Jenness and I thought he gave both the characters great voices. I especially liked the accent he used for Liam it was different than what I was initially expecting. I know there's a Collab book up next with another Author to finish off this story and I cannot wait to read (and listen to) it.
In a land and time where vampires are at the top of the food chain and humans exist only as a food source, Liiam goes on the hunt to procure a new pet. Venturing into the slum sector of town inhabited by the humans, Liiam ventures deeper into the filth and decaying than others of his kind have even explored, looking for a challenge vs the easy prey that welcome being chosen. Finding ..... Caleb.
Caleb has protected himself from the unwanted attention of the vampires who prey on his kind only to wind up in the hands of an alpha apex vampire predator who makes it obvious his intent is sexual along with Caleb's blood.
Now owned, Caleb fights the role Liiam wants him to play - that of pampered pet puppy - to no avail.
Let the transformation begin

An alternate universe fantasy based short story with a kinky m/m sexual format. Low on quality story line, this read is intended and supported by solo graphic man on man dominated erotica.
Does have a surprising climatic consequence scene that I'm not sure about - think of the title of this book as a hint.
All in all a quick read for those who look for paranormal BDSM kink featuring man on man action.
Holy shit, this was one hell of a depraved, fucked up and....well, insanely erotic story. *Ahem ahem, don't judge* It features a paranormal world where supernatural are at the top of the food chain and humans are just pets or food source for them. Liam, a vampire, captures Caleb, a human, and decides to play with him as his puppy pet just for his amusement. It has puppy play, hardcore humiliation, non-con/dub-con etc. Considered yourself warned...and def give this book a chance if you have a dark mind which can handle all of the above.
It's a relatively short story with just 7 chapters and while it's a part of a series, i think it can be read as a standalone if you want a kinky read just for the hell of it.
This was interesting. I'm not sure I was a fan of this one, though. Maybe it's because it was so quick there wasn't much time to get to know these characters well. Plus, the pet play was a little TOO much for me. Liam wasn't allowing Caleb to be a human at all.
I was in the mood for something dark and dubious and rather disturbing. Oh my lord, what's happening in this paranormal world?? The mind of R. Phoenix scares me...
Novella featuring a vampire with erotic feeding and dubcon / noncon puppy play. I think I wanted more character development in general? Undecided on continuing on with the series.
This was book 1 in the"Tamed & Trained" series. This was a short quick read I liked. Liam is a vampire looking for entertainment in the slums. When he comes across a house being guarded by humans he goes in a finds Caleb. When Liam feeds from him he decides to keep him as his pet. Caleb knows he can't fight the vamp so he goes but he doesn't make it easy. I liked this book but I wanted more of it. I have read this author before. This book was well written with no errors in grammar and spelling. I am looking forward to reading the next book in this series.
Absolutely loved the take on this vampire dom sub type story!
Other then the fact it was a short story which to me really is like reading the first few chapters or so of a book I loved it. I need more of this story though.. there are things mentioned that still need elaborating and explaining, but it served good to set up the two characters in it.
I guess these kinds of book are a hit or miss, for me this was a miss. I really didn't like both MC's and missed any connection or chemistry between them. I usually can appreciate an alpha bastard, but really started to hate Liam. I expected a dark erotic story. But this was just cruel and abusive. Maybe the length of the story played a part in this, too short for much story building.
Puppy play isn't really my thing, but this novella was well-written with some satisfying dystopian/supernatural worldbuilding and delicious non/dubcon. I hope the rest of the series develops more of a plot because this setup was intriguing. Puppy is a quality piece of dark MM erotica, and I'll definitely be reading more R. Phoenix.
I enjoyed this! Got the recommendation from an author and am delighted. I'm still obsessed with pet-play and really enjoy to read a variety of this specific kink. This was a rather short erotica, but I dive right into the next story of the trilogy
Author Info: Playful dark erotica, puppy play, dubcon, vampire, body modification, kinky
Well written on an old theme. I was curious enough to finish it, but did not really make much sense of it. Domination and submission are not my thing at all, even when portrayed as mutually desirable goals.
This was deliciously dark. I liked it very much. Caleb and Liam are very interesting and Desi is freaking scary. Great addition to the fate of the fallen universe
I love it! You’ve got the dark with the kink that I love. And the tail, that’s some creative writing write there. I can’t wait to dive into the next one.
I usually don’t mind something a little dark but this was not for me at all. Non con body modifications and forced dehumanization were just a no for me.
I regret to say, this book is absolute drivel. No matter what genre you enjoy; vampires, BDSM, or dystopia...this book does no justice to any of those themes. This was nowhere near erotic "puppy play & humiliation" ... This was just plain cruel from start to finish.
(Minor spoiler) You can't convince me that anybody would be aroused or get off on being backhanded/slapped in the face, repeatedly or mercilessly kicked in the ribs!! (End of spoiler)
Also, this is supposed to be a standalone, but ultimately, it just goes...nowhere! No suggestion of a fulfilling life for our poor MC so it's obvious, if you want closure or continuation of the story, you'll have to pay $5 for the sequel. (Which, obviously, I will not be doing!)
Interesting take on D/s relationship involving puppy play. Oh, and it's wickedly crazy. I truly did like this magically enhanced short story and I hope there will be more Caleb and Liam in the future. The ending is more ambiguous than HFN in my opinion. So, if you are looking for an HEA/HFN then I would skip this one. That is until the author continues with their story....hint, hint :) If that happens, it would be nice to know what happened in the past that lead to their paths crossing.
Daaaang. I love how dark and gritty the world and it’s characters are. And it stays that way, which is just fantastic! Some romances go soft and mushy after the sex, but this one stays true to who the characters are. Love it.
This was fun, if a little too conveniently cutesy cute. Would have enjoyed it more if it had been a more clear non-con/ dub-con story - because that's just the way I roll - but I'm pretty sure the author's choice of making it somewhat consensual will spare them many a ranty review, so probably a wise choice...
I have not read the Fate of the fallen series, so I did not know the universe this takes place in, but the snippets of world building worked fine for me to get a sense of the world we were in, where humans are nothing and supernaturals run the world with complete power of life and death.
In this world the best a human can hope for, is to be taken as a living snack by a vampire, a fate that happens to our main character Caleb. He is grabbed from his house by Liam, a vampire suffering from ennui. As bored as Liam is, he decides to do something different and keep the human as a pet, a puppy.
The story was a bit too short to get very deep into either of the characters, which was a bit of a shame. I would have liked a slow exploration of Caleb's submissive sides, and a build up to him enjoying himself would have been nice, as I find it difficult to believe you would go straight into orgasmic pleasure with a creature you do not know and trust, but which can kill you as easily as looking at you. Especially considering the way they meet and that there's isn't that much chemistry between the characters.
Anyway, since this review is approaching the same length as the story, I'll try and round it off. This is not a romance. This is a short piece of vampire puppy play erotica (now there's a sentence I never thought I'd write in a review) and as such it is quite enjoyable.
It is only 0.99 on Amazon, so what do you really have to lose by trying it?
This is a messed up book. I cannot remember exactly when I read it, only that I might have wanted to poke my eyes out afterward. It was a harsh departure from the very loving M.A. Innes I was accustomed. I was not familiar with, and clearly not prepared, to read R. Phoenix who has a much stronger influence on this book than Almost Strangers, another collaboration between the two.
This book is dark.
I can usually handle grit. What I struggle with is non-consensual acts. And that happens here. It was too much for me and I had to just acknowledge that.
So why am I not giving it the horrible 1 or 2 star rating?
Because I kept thinking about it. It got in my head. It was well-written, the world felt very real, and the characters were compelling. It had good stuff to it, even though it was not my preferred type of story.
And I sometimes want to read things that sometimes make me uncomfortable. So while I could have done without the scene where they visit the witch, I did find this book to be really well-done for the genre it is.
And I would not call this a romance. I have not put it in a romance tag at all. My hope is that by the end of the series it might turn more into one? But I hold out no hope for that at this point.
Liam and Caleb’s story wasn’t as dark for me as some in the back catalogue—it’s sweeter in its dark and dirty way. Great intro if you’re game. While it’s technically a stand-alone, reading the crossovers further enhances the stories.
Caleb’s position in their upended world was surprisingly well protected, though his lack of self preservation was amusing. Liam was instantly enamoured by the taste of his new pet, despite tempting boundaries with his mouthy retorts.
“A vampire launched as a projectile could be a public health hazard?” - Caleb.
At 500 years, Liam is weary, nothing holds his attention in the world following the downfall. Tolerating Caleb, who aims to push everyone’s buttons, is a feat in itself.
Love seeing Desi again and her seemingly random musings.
“The stars shine bright; the world goes on. Your sire desecrates the balance of death and creation.”
The crossover between is always fun. Again, I encourage anyone reading to pick up books in all the series listed.
Short, engaging, and as always, a favourite re read. Well written, paranormal, dystopian, dub-con/non-con, mm. 4.5 ⭐️
I’ve always liked the whole Human/Paranormal pairing but a human person pretending to be an animal is still new to me. I’ve recently learned that there is many more types of BDSM out there but puppy play is still kinda weird, in theory at least. In reading a fiction novel about it, its kinda cute. Liam having a psycho witch perform some sort of magic surgery to literally giving Caleb a tail rather than having him wear a butt plug with a fake tail attached is screwed up. Going a little too far in my opinion. But Liam is a 500 year old vampire, he’s bound to be a little messed up with that long of a lifespan. It’s a very interesting and entertaining read with some very hot intimate scenes. Definitely worth checking out!
