Die by Proxy , A Benjamin Kroh Novel by Benjamin Oneal
Someone is leaving dead child molesters along Interstate 69; sitting naked and alone, waiting to be discovered by some passing motorist. Their hands have been severed from their bodies, and they died at the scene. Their clothes are folded neatly in their laps, along with their wallets, and their severed hands on either side; one holds a confession, and one holds evidence of their evil.
In the thriller Die by Proxy , Mr. Smith, a killer almost as deplorable as the child predators he hunts, is using the victims as bait. With every disease-minded body he leaves along Interstate 69, he pulls agent Benjamin Kroh, of the Behavioral Analysis Unit closer to his death. These morbid enticements bring Kroh, back to his hometown.
Why has he brought them here? This is a question that must be answered, if Kroh is to save his friends, his family, and himself.
"Mr. Smith" is torturing and killing child molesters and leaving them where they will be seen. He leaves a confession in one hand and a flash drive in another. Their clothes are in their laps, their hands have been severed.
What the FBI doesn't know is that "Mr. Smith" is using these deaths as bait..especially for Agent Benjamin Kroh. These killings are leading back to Kroh's hometown. . Why has he brought them here? This is a question that must be answered, if Kroh is to save his friends, his family, and himself.
This is not fast-paced, but the suspense comes in a steady flow. The author has spent a lot of time on character development of the good guys and the bad. It's a complex plot but extremely fascinating to follow.
Many thanks to the author / Dog Ear Publishing / Netgalley for the digital copy of this crime fiction. Opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.
Ben Oneal - He has a series of FBI Detective novels with the main character being Benjamin Kroh. Die by Proxy is the second of these ongoing series.
Majority of the novel occurs in Indy & MUncie with some Stops in Cincy and States of Kentucky and Michigan.
There are a series of deaths involving child molesters; however, computer technicians are also being killed. The serial killer leaves a very unique calling card....victims have their hands sitting in their laps with a flash card / disc with their crimes. Except the computer technicians who are killed with a stab in the heart.
FBI Agent Kohl is a local native of Indy and is part of the FBI - his hunches seem to work.....and he has a hunch that there is more than to the murders.....especially once he is the target of a murder attempt.
The book follows that same pattern from the first novel - with sections that provide a subtle statement of the purpose of those chapters. One of those sections / acts will introduce the twist. Unfortunately, the plot has some similarities as well. Killer dismembered their victims. (fingers vs hands). Killer stages the deaths. (fingers in container with ice and cryptic message vs wrists sitting on lap with flash drive of crimes with a letter) Killer has a more massive plan after the first set of deaths. The sexual exploits of the FBI Agent. Larry and the Twins!?!?!? A short trip to solve another mystery...these seem interesting in itself - and wish there was more to these than one / two chapters.
there were a lot of typos.
The killer's true identity is revealed. However, the reason for the killer's action is difficult to understand. Without spoiling it, this happens daily so do not understand the mental breakdown.
Again, the ending is not for me....however, most folks would enjoy the ending as well as the overall plot.
The only reason 4 stars instead of 5 is because the amt of typos was driving me bonkers. It’s soooo good though, as in his other book he twists it on its head and leaves you with a dropped jaw!
Murder on a freeway I've traveled many times...I was intrigued. I'm glad I gave this new-to-me author a chance. The story is fast paced (mostly) with a compelling storyline that has a lot of intricacies.
While it doesn't say it anywhere, I feel like this is part of a series and maybe we should have met some of these characters before. It's enough to wonder about and have you checking to see (it's not that I can find), but the story is enjoyable on its own and you won't be lost :)
As they hunt for the pedophile they find that Mr. Smith is the child killer. I really enjoyed this book. I can not give too much away or write too much on this review as I do not want to spoil it for others. I will say Please do not miss this book.
