Oklahoma Wastelands #1

The Loudest Silence

Rate this book
From the author of the Amazon bestselling Broken World series, comes an exciting new Zombie Apocalypse series...

When Regan was a young girl living in the small town of Altus, OK, Kellan was just her brother’s best friend. Then the virus came, turning the world’s population into zombies, and he became so much more. They were only kids, but he saved her. Watched over her. Kept her alive. And he’s been doing the same thing every day since.

After living the apocalypse for nine years, Regan thought they’d experienced every kind of loss and terror imaginable. But when a new group starts wreaking havoc in the Oklahoma wastelands where they live, Regan and Kellan are faced with a new set of horrors.

When they cross paths with a teenage girl, offering to help seems like the right thing to do. But Regan and Kellan soon discover that lending aid to the girl very well could lead to their undoing.

I'm a mom of four, Air Force wife, and author of adult and young adult dystopian, post-apocalyptic, and science fiction. I love intense world building and character driven stories that feature strong female leads - as well as a side of romance - and any end of the world scenario. Zombies, aliens, a distant future where people have no clue how the world ended in the first place, you name it, I will create a story there!

Having lived in a lot of different places after more than a decade as an Air Force wife, I love setting my books in cities I've actually lived in to give them authenticity. I've resided in: Indiana, Georgia, Mississippi, South Carolina, California, and Oklahoma but am currently back in my home state of Ohio where I live with my husband, four kids, two dogs, and three cats.

When I'm not writing, you can find me by my pool (in the summer), getting lost in some binge-worthy show or at a play with my husband, patronizing one of the great restaurants in my small town of Troy, Ohio with my family, or traveling. I want to see everything and make a point of visiting a new place every year!

Some of my favorite books are The Hunger Games, Pride and Prejudice, The Host, and The Stand. My favorite movies are Aliens, Jaws, Signs, Say Anything, Everything Everywhere All At Once, and The Greatest Showman.

This was very entertaining! I picked up this book because I was in the mood for some zombies and I had heard good things about Kate L. Mary's books. Once I started listening to this story, I didn't want to stop and ended up finishing the book in just a couple of days. I am glad that I decided to take a chance on this one because it ended up being a whole lot of fun.

This book did focus on romance a bit more than I expected. I also have to admit that I would have liked to see more zombies. These were not big issues for me and I really liked the story that the book did tell. This was one of those books that I found myself liking more and more and the story progressed and I have to admit that I was completely sold by the romance by the end of the book.

Regan and Kellan were just kids when the world fell apart. It has been nine years since they lost everyone but they have somehow made it along with a small group of people that share their shelter. They have always thought of each other as siblings. At least until recently when things started to change. Regan wants to be able to take care of herself and be a productive member of their community while Kellan wants to protect her and keep her safe.

I thought that this was a pretty exciting story. I liked the way that we learned a lot about the character through their actions and I enjoyed seeing what they were willing to fight for. There were some pretty intense situations where I worried about the welfare of the characters. I was completely invested in this story and thought that the author did a great job of creating characters that I cared about.

I enjoyed Heather Firth's narration of this book. I think that she did a really great job with all of the characters and the dialogue felt very natural. She had a very pleasant voice that was easy to listen to for hours at a time. I think that the narration increased my enjoyment of this story because she was able to add a lot of emotion to some rather important scenes. I look forward to listening to more of her work in the future.

I would recommend this book to readers who enjoy some romance in an apocalypse story. My audiobook copy also had a short story at the end that focused on two of the other characters from Regan and Kellan's group which I also enjoyed. I can't wait to get my hands on the next book in this series.

I received a review copy of this audiobook from the author via Audiobook Boom.

Initial Thoughts
This was so entertaining! It was more romance than I expected but it worked. I would have liked to see more zombies in this book but there were enough that I got a good feel of the world that Regan and Kellen were living in. By the end of the book, I didn't want to stop listening and I am pretty eager to see what happens next. This is the first time that I have listened to Heather Firth and I thought she did a great job with the story.

Ever since our families died nine years ago and we’d banded together, Kellan had felt like he was responsible for me. Maybe it was the guilt because of the words he’d so carelessly thrown at me during those few weeks we were alone, or maybe it was because I was the only person from his old life who was still around. Either way, I was tired of him treating me like a weight he had to drag around, and I’d put up with it for too long. Kellan needed to let me grow up.
***

After surviving 9 years into the apocalypse, Regan and Kellan are finding out that there may be worse things in this life than the dead. The living can be a much scarier, deadlier foe. Rumors are circulating through the region and settlements that a group of vicious men are after the living. But why? And will 9 years of safety suddenly come crashing down thanks to the intrusion of these men?

I was in absolute love with this story. So much I nearly cried knowing it may be awhile before I get to see what happens next. I really hope the author is one of those that like to have a series nearly all the way written as they are publishing one book, so they can get the rest out as quick as can be. Or maybe I am just wishful thinking and setting myself up for a long wait. *cries*

Either way, I will be eagerly and impatiently waiting the release of the 2nd book. But as for this one, I couldn’t put it down. It is an awesome edge of your seat, page turner. I kept reading until I was done. And even then, my mind was racing and I couldn’t fall asleep. So I picked up a couple of Mary’s novellas and read until 4am getting more of my zombie fix.

I thoroughly enjoyed the tension and angst that ran like a live current between Regan and Kellan. I loved the build up until all that was left was to act on every emotion that was between them. It was fantastic and amazing and utterly breathtaking. My heart may never be the same.

Not only do they have the zombies to watch out for...without the advance technology of weather forecasting...they were at the mercy of stronger, more deadlier storms. Tornadoes the likes of which Oklahoma has ever seen. And life altering droughts. My weather nerd self was loving this aspect of the story right along with my zombie loving self. Double win for me.

The writing was exceptional. The story was incredible. The romance perfection!! And the zombies were...well, hungry. With my heart in my throat the entire read, I inhaled all the words from start to finish. I need more and look forward to seeing where this series goes. 5 Stars!!

*I listened to this in audiobook format*

I went into this expecting some terrifying, possibly fun, zombie slaying adventure with a side of romance. What I got instead was an annoying, YA-esque, slightly chauvinistic 'romance' with zombies somewhere on the side. This was a slog for me to get through. It was only eleven hours long, which would usually only take me about a day and a half to listen to/read. But, I found myself tiring of it after only a couple of chapters and was only able to get through it in bursts.

The main character is a really whiny young woman named Regan, who at age 21 acts like she's about 14. Her love interest is her late brother's friend who is about 25 I believe and he acts like he's in his mid 30's and her over-protective dad. Tell me again how this is supposed to be steamy? Like I get they may have lost out on their teenage years because of zombies and therefore may be a little emotionally stunted, but it's not like they never had any interaction with other humans. They were almost immediately accepted into a convenient shelter full of helpful adults before they had much of a chance to be on their own. So why are they like this?

I wanted zombie action. The zombies were very peripheral to the plot and only seen a handful of times. It was disappointing actually, when it turned out they have a shelter that has basically everything they could ever need in a zombie apocalypse. That sucked a little of tension or possibility out of the plot. The plot as it is, a teenager on the run from a ruthless group who want her because she is immune, could have been interesting, but doesn't get started until like, 40% of the way into the book. A huge chunk of the book is dedicated to the 'romance' plot where Regan whines that Kellan treats her like a kid and her acting like a kid. Meanwhile, he steadfastly denies that she should ever get a chance to grow up, learn, take risks and have any sense of agency. She then gets petty jealous that he has female friends and has possibly slept with women before they were even together. Yuck. Boring.

I wish I could say otherwise, but I did not enjoy this book. It was just OK for me. I can see that some people might have enjoyed it wholeheartedly, and I salute them. I can even see that the author is a decent writer. This book just fell unfortunately flat for me.

On the audiobook, the reader, Helen Firth, was very slow and I found myself upping the speed to about 1.5, which I rarely do. She was kind of monotonous, and had a very obvious accent which I believe might have been Canadian if the way she pronounced the word 'sorry' was any indication lol. It was grating and I found myself just turning the audiobook off and switching to the ebook more often than not.

This book was given to me for free at my request and I provided this voluntary review.

This is all really amateurish. The used plot threads, the presented characters even the dialogues. It is one dimensional, convenient and predictable. Sadly at about 30% into the book, I didn’t want to continue reading anymore.

The book started not in the best way, as it presented a hormonally chaotic teenager lusting after her crush including the awkward behaviour, despite being 21 years old. Underlined by a repeating immature head drama of the supposedly unrequited love.
Besides that not endearing quality to me, she also acted like those stereotypical annoying young women wanting to be treated as an independent and contributing woman, but making one heedless decision after another and are supported by strong arms while constantly falling or tripping over something. It is tiresome.
She didn’t act like a 21 years old more like a teenager with a chaotic and limited mental and emotional state.

And what is it with all the hair that hangs in faces to be pushed away, the author loves to describe for almost every character? Is there a hair fetish going on I missed? Odd.

Her constant explanation of her changed feelings for him, was tiresome. I didn’t see the point in constantly explaining it. It is an authentic transition for them to become lovers, but the execution is too focused on it, so that we have now been reminded of it every single chapter. There is no need, we get it the first time and it is enough that it influences her behaviour but that doesn’t mean you have to explain it on a loop. Let the characters do their jobs by their actions.

Small inconsistencies, like walking with dust covered clothes through her small apartment, leaving pieces of her clothing behind on the plush carpeted floor along the way to the shower. Such behaviour doesn’t fit in those times anymore. Where a vacuum is probably not in the inventory.

We are at chapter 7 and I still have no clue who this mysterious Jasper is nor how many people live or have lived in their Homebase. There are small but contradictory information snippets but nothing concrete so far. Then there is this mystery compound they are living in. With 11 underground levels? Like a hive out of resident evil? There is probably a reasonable explanation, but all that cloak and dagger thing, makes it all look really odd.
Who would and could have build such a massive underground compound? It sounds a bit ridiculous at this point. The whole world building has a lot of holes so far with an additional time gap of 9 years as to what happened to the world in general. From people dying of a mysterious sickness to suddenly being thrown in a world full of zombies with no background information. At this point I am not having much fun reading, but I am going to hang in there a little longer.

Chapter 9 brings partly the missing information, to finally make some sense about this all. Although it continuous to present a senseless plot thread. One were a hunting trip for game, ends in a sudden but short hailstorm. After the storm, they quickly decide to go back home. Why? The storm is over. Isn’t that expected and should that not be already part of their new living in the apocalypse? After what the author described about the apocalyptic weather conditions they had to endure it surprises me that the characters often show a behaviour as if they would still live in a life before the zombies and not almost a decade in the aftermath of it.
But this also leads to the irregularity, that there is again not enough information, not for the mysterious sickness, apparently followed by zombies and a drastic changes and human unfriendly environment.

And why would they have a routine in place to distract from their compound if someone would follow them, pointedly used in the early chapters but not when returning from a hunting trip? A hunting trip that wasn’t one because of a short storm, but that’s beside the point. To find out not a few pagers later that they were of course followed.

I can remember a conversation early on between Emma and Regan in which both speculated about the reason why Jasper keeps the knowledge about the water level in the cistern to himself. Their conclusion was that he wants to avoid panic breaking out amongst the residents. And now I am learning, that there are only six residents in total, including Jasper. What panic? Is this a joke?

I realise I need to stop now. Stop reading and stop writing the review while reading, there would be no end.
I tried but not like this.

I received this book via a promocode and this is my voluntary review. Book number one of the Oklahoma wastelands series. Regan and Kellan were kids when he made the promise to her brother that he would protect her, for 9 years since the world fell apart they have grown up in Shelter alongside the others in their group. Regan has been noticing her feelings for Kellan this past year are becoming more intense... (kiss her already!) Kellan is now 24 and he's fully aware of how nicely his best friend Mats younger sister grew up. They go out on a supply run, soon people start hearing rumors of dangerous individuals attacking groups using hordes of the dead and later they find out they are hunting for immune survivors... keen to stay out of the drama Regan's group doesn't have much of a choice when Harper ends up on their doorstep needing help. This story has it all and those who love the walking dead will adore this story.

A new zombie apocalypse series, set in the same world as the fabulous Broken World series, but in Oklahoma, starring Reagan, a 21-year-old who has been taken care of by her brother's best friend, Kellan, since the collapse occurred, nine years before, when their families all died. They're now in a secret underground shelter, with four others - I liked that three of the characters actually come from one of the short stories in Broken Stories - love this sort of detail/connection.

Kate Mary is as readable as ever, and this story zips along, with some great new plot ideas that make it stand out from the usual collapse/survival/fight off zombies and scary people scenarios - I liked, too, that it started nine years in.

Ms Mary does incorporate a fair bit of romantic suspense into her post apoc stories - a warning for those who don't like this element. Whereas I was mostly fine with it in the Broken World series, because Vivian and Axl's relationship was so heartrendingly real, I wasn't so keen in this one. Like, we knew they were going to end up together, so I didn't need to read about Reagan's frustrated hormones and Kellan's avowals of 'I have to keep you safe' every few pages; I was keen to get back to the survival/danger aspects. But perhaps that's just me, not being into romantic suspense. If you are, you'll love it.

I didn't find the characters quite so compelling in this story as the previous series, but I still kept reading because I loved the setting, the plot is excellent, and she writes so well.

Kate L. Mary has done it again. She takes what could be just another zombie apocalypse novel, works her magic, and createscharacters you actually care about and a vivid plot you feel like could happen.

I could not put this book down. It had me on the edge of my seat, and every time I finished a chapter, I felt like I needed to keep going. The tension between Regan and Kellan is one of those things you really want in a book, and it is rarely delivered. Kate L. Mary knows how to keep the reader wanting more, and never rushing emotions.

The apocalyptic Oklahoma setting is so fantastic. I love how the weather played a huge part in Regan and Kellan's struggles, a long with, of course, the zombies. It kept the novel exciting, nerve wrecking, and ....really, everything you could want in a zombie apocalypse novel.

Overall, this book is amazing. I cannot wait to see where this story goes. It is a page turner, with fantastic writing, beautiful characters, and terrifying circumstances. You don't want to miss out on this one!

Exciting and intense

I love Kate and her Zombie world! She describes her world with such vivid detail its like your living it with them. And this one was no different. We follow new characters in this one and I loved them as much as Vivian and Axle. (You do not need to read Broken World to enjoy this). They may start off young in the early days of the apocalypse, when everyone around them is dying and the world is going to hell, but 9 years later they are all grown up. And the heat and longing is palpable. They have a new family and somewhere they belong, but in a world with Zombies, that can change at any minute, so protocol must always be followed. The world is not the same, nor are people. The things they must endure are intense and leap off the pages sucking the reader along for the ride. The perfect start to a new series in I a world I adore and I can't wait for the next installment. Five intense and gripping stars.

Well written

First of all let me say that I struggled with the decision about whether to give this book 4 or 5 stars. 4 because there was a lot of romantic moments in the book, not sex just romance, and I have avoided books where the romance drives the story instead of the apocalypse. But that is my own preference so I decided 5 stars because it was well written and interesting. The author took a lot of time to paint a picture of the town where this took place and of the state of Oklahoma which I enjoyed.

RATING: 4.5 STARS

I really enjoy reading dystopian novels and love when they are unique. We have your zombies and bad men but it’s unique in the telling and world that is created. The characters are relatable and I enjoyed how Regan stood up for herself and grew throughout the story. I still have questions about how it all started and I’m glad we will get book 2. If you love unique dystopian reads, don’t miss out on this one.

This author put more thought into her world than some post-apoc authors have, but there were still some puzzling gaps.

After years of hiding their location and capabilities, why would Regan casually take some of their hydroponically grown food -- not a commonly found resource -- to the local market to trade? How did it not occur to her that this could draw attention when nobody is supposed to know they're growing apples underground?

Did everyone just decide not to have kids or are they incapable of it? There's no children in Regan's group, despite people apparently having paired up. When it's potentially relevant later, there's no discussion between her and another character about birth control or what they'd do if she gets pregnant.

The whole underground shelter thing felt like a softball to help the author avoid questions about how the characters were surviving. When convenient, the shelter community seems to function as a much larger group, but in reality it's just an older man with a small handful of younger people who spend more time bickering over relationships than doing anything to help survive. Despite relationship tensions, there's no discussion of bringing in more people? The personal dynamics just don't seem to make sense.

If a more alert reader managed to figure out what the "loudest silence" referred to in the title actually is, I'd appreciate being clued in.

Let me start by saying that this narrator made me think of Emma Wilder from the Holly Danger series. I think she did a really good job with the variety of voices, especially Jaspers. I had three issues though. 1. Every few lines/sentences she would add inflection to the last word. Why? I’m not sure. 2. There were random pauses in the sentence, specifically after the introductory phrase. For example: “When I climbed out… the heat from the sun…” 3. For whatever reason, when she would say the word “figures” she would pronounce it as “figgers” and with “tightening,” it was like she had to pronounce all the consonants.

I liked this story. I wish there would have been more zombie interaction though.

Questions/Comments:

How many times was “nine years” mentioned? As in nine years had passed since the zombie outbreak. I felt too many times. Speaking of the outbreak, I was left with a few questions. Why was more not told about the outbreak? How it started? Did it affect the whole world? Why did Regan’s parents and brother not change into zombies after they died? Given this was a zombie story…why did it seem as though the zombies were left on the sideline a good majority of the story? Almost like an afterthought.

How would the cars/gas be good to go/working still?

There was a part when Callen and Regan are driving passed their old houses and Regan thinks of how that had been the only real home she’d ever had. Yet, either before that scene or after (I can’t remember), she thought the exact thing about the bunker.

Where are the newspapers coming from? The fact there was a government around after nine years and they/someone were making newspapers just seemed strange to me. Maybe it’s because this is the first post-apocalyptic story that had this? I’m not sure. I’d like a map of how the US is now laid out.

There were a couple of times in which someone would talk about the gang who went around looking for the immune people and say how they weren’t killing anyone. If they’re releasing zombies to bite people, then technically they are killing people. I just thought that was a questionable thing for anyone to have said.

I don’t think I was really a fan of Emma. The majority of the story she was all right, but when she found out Blake left, she turned into a douche, in my opinion. How could she be upset when she had moved on and there was no one there for him? Her bringing up the fact they had previously been together for seven years, as like a guilt trip, was what really did it for me. God forbid, he didn’t want to watch Emma and Cade all lovey-dovey while he was alone.

I was under the impression the gang wouldn’t have really raped Regan. Did anyone else feel that way? Like undressing her and threatening to do sexual stuff was the easiest way to upset Callen and they knew it. I don’t know. I wasn’t a fan of that scene. Maybe it was because I felt the narrator put a little too much emotion into Regan’s character. Or maybe it was because I felt Regan should have been a little tougher when it came to the guy touching her boob (in what sounded like a non-sexual way, as in it didn’t come across as though he were enjoying himself). Do I sound like a horrible person for thinking this? Maybe.

Even better was after they got back to the bunker. Given Regan was so traumatized about the experience with the gang, I found it very questionable that she would be so eager to suddenly have sex, all of a sudden. Yes, I know emotions can get crazy after an experience like that, and maybe she wanted to feel closer to Callen. I don’t know. But the fact there were no comments (inner thought/dialogue) about what had happened, no hesitancy about Callen touching her where a “bad man” touched her, only thinking about how she had wanted Callen for so long, no being violated thoughts, only acted normal, just had me questioning that scene.

Lastly, when was the last time they’d cleaned themselves? Sorry, but I always detest when characters are active, getting dirty, sweating and gross, but then go somewhere and make out (licking and kissing of yucky skin) or have sex… it’s gross.

✯✯5 Loud Crazy Stars!!!✯✯

Kate L. Mary is legit becoming an automatic one click author for me. This is the first of her new series and OMG what a start is it!!

Regan and Kellan have been together since the zombie apocalypse began. Kellan was Regan’s older brothers best friend. Both of their families past away. Kellan made a promise to his best friend to take care of Regan.

Nine years later they’re still together and Kellan’s still looking out for Regan. They found refuge with Jasper. He took them in to an underground bunker made specifically for when the zombie apocalypse. It’s them, Jasper, Cade, Blake and Emma.

They’ve lived together for nine years. There was more of them but a few years ago the lost a bunch of people bc they were too trusting.

Life’s changed since the apocalypse hit. There’s different community’s were people settle for a bit, get a sleep before moving on and where they bargain, trade things (ammo, gas, soap, clothes etc). Regan and everyone in her group keep their location private. Nowadays it’s a matter of survival.

If things weren’t hard enough trying to survive, getting enough food, water, everyday living. And, staying away from zombies.

Regan has been battling herself for the past year. She’s had feelings for Kellan for a year and everyday it’s getting harder for Regan to keep her feelings and emotions in check.

Regan and Kellan bicker and fight like siblings one minute and an old married couple the next. Regan hates that Kellan treats her like a baby one minute and saying things that have her confused the next.

It’s bad enough Emma and Blake use to date and after they broke up she started dating Cade. Their love triangle is driving everyone crazy. So, Regan and Kellan know them being more then friends is a bad idea so for now they’ll do nothing.

While out on a run, Regan and Kellan come across some guys with some disturbing news. There’s guys going around trying to grab people and letting them get bit by zombies. They’re out looking for people who’re immune to zombie bites.

When Harper shows up at their fence everybody in the bunker knows things are about to change. They vote and the winner was letting her in. Regan and Emma learn that Harper’s immune.

They all know that their situation just went from bad to worse. Add in a drought and all of a sudden insanely bad, quick storms. Hail, rain and wind. Plus, the guys looking for immune people. The love triangle of Emma/Cade/Blake. Regan and Kellan fighting their own feelings. Yup block out an afternoon and evening bc you won’t want to put this down.

Kate L. Mary writes amazing stories. With extremely strong women fighting for what’s right for the people in their life that they care about the most. This was no different. I’m hoping and praying we get book two sooner then later. I loved the bonus chapters of Emma and Blake from the beginning and how they got with jasper and it was an amazing to read.

Another must read story from Kate L. Mary. I can’t wait to read the next book she releases.

The Loudest Silence: A Post-Apocalyptic Zombie Novel (Oklahoma Wastelands, Book 1) by Kate L. Mary and narrated by Heather Firth is an amazing zompoc adventure! I recommend if you enjoy stories with great world building/great characters, the zompoc genre, or looking for something new, give this one a try.

What’s it about? Regan and Kellan have been living underground with a small group of folks since the zombie apocalypse began. Regan, who’s been treated as the baby of the group, is now an adult and requests to learn how to survive on her own (killing zombies, going to trade with others, etc.). She has also realized she cares for Kellan. Harper, a lone teenage girl who happens to be immune to the virus, shows up at the group’s hidden bunker one day. They decide to let her in and the troubles begin...It does end in a cliffhanger, or semi-cliffhanger- it’s clear there is more books in the series. The way people were talking in reviews I was expecting way more romance, but I didn’t think there was any more than in previous books I’ve listened to of Kate’s (I felt there were more zombie elements than romance). Favorite quote from the book: “Life isn’t worth living if there’s no risk.”

The narrator, Heather Firth, did an excellent job. Her voices are distinct and her narrating is smooth and easy to listen to.

You also get a bonus called Thank You Daddy (Broken Stories Novelette). It is fantastic! It tells Emma and Blake’s story at the beginning of the apocalypse. I am hoping we get more of their story (hint hint Kate).

Overall I recommend, especially if you love stories with great world building, fun characters, or the zompoc genre. Kate has yet to disappoint me with her writing and she’s in my top three favorite authors of 2019. If you haven’t jumped on the Kate bandwagon, it’s time to do so.

Parental guidance/trigger warnings (for both The Loudest Silence and Thank You Daddy): drinking, death (zombies, people), kidnapping, occasional swearing, weapons (guns), shower between the two main characters followed by sex (not in graphic detail), some sex talk (being a virgin, learning about it, or like things- minimal), threat of/sexual assault (forced removal of clothing on a woman before it is stopped- indicated she would be raped but stops before rape occurs), execution of male with gun, hitting of male in head with bat, war talk (Iraq/Afghanistan- not in detail a mention of past service), death of parents.

*I was given a free review copy of the audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review. Thank you for allowing me to listen and review the book!

Review of the series!

I’ve been trying to read this world in order and I re-read the Broken World series and then continued with the Twisted series a few months ago and had to take a break to focus on ARCs that I had to read! I then decided to start this trilogy to continue the reading books set in the same world! After reading, I can say that I loved every second of reading this trilogy! I honestly couldn’t put it down until I had finished reading and I was reading a few more chapters every chance I had! There was romance in the plot and I loved the way it developed and it was sort of enemies to lovers and brothers best friend! The romance allowed for some steamy scenes too! There was also a lot of action and suspense in the plot of the books, which added to them and made me enjoy them more! I also felt like the stakes got even higher as the books progressed! The characters were also amazing and made this trilogy for me! Regan was the main character, and at the beginning of this trilogy she was unsure and I think that she understood more about what she had to do as the trilogy progressed and she learned more about how dangerous the zombie world really was! Regan also grew a lot and I liked her more and more as the trilogy progressed! Kellan was the love interest of Regan! Kellan was a guy who was quite rough at the beginning and he tried to avoid putting Regan in danger! This was because she meant a lot to him and he didn't want to lose her! Eventually Regan stood up to Kellan and he let her learn how to defend herself! It was easy to see how much Regan meant to Kellan and he was a strong guy! This trilogy was only written from Regan’s point of view! I was maybe expecting it to be written from maybe dual point of view before I started reading, so I was a bit surprised that it was written fully through Regan’s eyes! I guess it made sense for the story to be written this way because it was Regan’s story and it was her journey in the zombie ridden world! I was still able to connect with the other characters and they all added to the story! It was also a lot of fun to see characters from the Broken World series make appearances in this book or at least be mentioned! I now can’t wait to continue reading the books set in this world! I know that the next series I have to read is seven books and will start right from the beginning of the apocalypse with a new set of characters! I’ll definitely be reading them next and I can’t wait to read their journey! The covers for this trilogy suit the feel of the books and would draw me to the books if I didn’t already know the author’s name! I love how well it suits the covers for the prequel series as well!

Fantastic Story & Narration🎧 Never a Dull Moment!

The Loudest Silence: A Post-Apocalyptic Zombie Novel
Oklahoma Wastelands, Book 1
By: Kate L. Mary
Narrated by: Heather Firth

This is my first book by Kate L. Mary, I’ve seen the praise her books received and the great feedback but I was on the fence about the whole Zombie Apocalypse storylines. But curiosity got the better of me and I had to give it a try. And I am so glad I did, the story was not like I imagined, it was so much better and so much more. Kate L. Mary is a gifted author, she creates an imaginative world where zombies roam around aimlessly looking for fresh meat. Only a fraction of the living world has survived, resources and supplies are limited and the going is tough. The book starts off with heartache, Regan’s family has been killed, her bother is on his way out. He asks his best friend, Kellan, to look out for her before he passes. Fast forward nine years, they have been living in a bunker type compound with several others and getting by. They go to other settlements to trade for goods they need but mostly stay hidden and to themselves. All that changes when a young girl appears at their gate. Being burned before they reluctantly let her in. They soon find that she draws attention to them and brings them trouble. I liked how this story played out, the camaraderie between the group, how they’ve become each other’s family and look out for each other. I loved the chemistry between Kellan and Regan, as much as they fought it, it was a losing battle. There were some great twists in this story, more heartbreaks and plenty of drama and action. I am looking forward to what comes next for Regan and Kellan. Kate L. Mary thank you for this wonderful story, you hooked me in and I am now a fan.

I listened to the Audible edition, Heather Firth is a fantastic narrator and voice performer. She brings these characters to life, gives each their own voice and personality. She does a great job projecting the emotions of the characters and the drama of the story into her performance. She is an entertaining storyteller and a pleasure to listen to. Thank you for this great listen🎧

Listened to the audio version of this story on Audible. It was a good listening experience; quality recording and a clear performance. The narrator does a good job; she fits the characters well.

I enjoy zombie apocalypse romance, so love the premise for this story. Plus, there's a whole brother's best friend crush thing going on that I liked. Regan's brother died, but not before asking his best friend, Kellan, to look out for her. During the zombie apocalypse, that's a pretty tough job; especially since they were in their teens at the time. Now, Regan is 21 and starting to feel romantic towards Kellan, but she thinks he just sees her as a little sister. Kellan is a little bit older at around 25; he cares deeply for Regan and will do anything to keep her safe. Love how protective he is! Regan and Kellan both have a couple of annoying aspects, but I liked them together. They are both sweet with each other. They are part of a group of survivors that stay in some type of bunker, so there's a bit of story with some side characters too. Enjoyed the interaction between all the characters. We get lots about the relationships going on between the characters, some about the humans that have turned bad, and some zombie action!

Overall, an entertaining zombie romance! Love that this is a series! Excited to see where the story goes and see the characters grow. This one has a bit of a cliffhanger; not too bad of one, but there's still lots of story to be told. Looking forward to it!

Also, in the version of this story that I listened to, there was a bonus short story. This book mainly featured Blake and Emma, who were side characters in The Loudest Silence. It's about how Blake and Emma met at the beginning of the zombie apocalypse, the trauma they've suffered, and how they found themselves with a group of survivors. It was a good backstory for Blake and Emma, but it's sad because after getting their current story in the full book; I know things don't quite go well for them. Still liked getting to know them more. Good prequel!

You don't have to be into zombie apocalypse stories to enjoy this book. I rarely read these kinds of stories myself, but I got completely engrossed in this one. There is a beautiful love story amidst the chaos, and I was drawn into the lives of these characters. Kellan and Regan have grown up together and formed an unbreakable bond. They found a new family when everything fell apart, but they are closest to each other because of their shared memories. The depth of feeling they have for each other precedes their attraction, and it is strong and true. It seems inevitable, like it would have happened regardless of whether they were left alone in the apocalypse. I could imagine a different life for them in which they fell in love and got married in the normal world.

I am a huge fan of romance, but there is an exciting story here even for those who are not. The romance doesn't overshadow the rest of the plot. In fact, there isn't much time for it. These characters are often in danger, and there are many intense, suspenseful scenes. Bad people are as much of a threat as the zombies, and so is the harsh landscape. The author did a phenomenal job of showing all the threats they face, along with the risks they have to take just to survive.

The narrator had such a soothing voice that worked remarkably well with the intense story. It wasn't hyper or overwrought, and it drew me right into the thick of the action like she took me by the hand and showed me the scene unfolding before me. She was able to go from that pleasantly feminine cadence to a gruff older man and a sexy young man's voice. This is a narrator I will seek out again, and especially for the next book in this series. I'm hooked!

We did a blog tour on this book, and it peaked my interest.  I never read anything from Mary before but, every once in a while I love a great post-apocalyptic series.  Add in a little romance, and I love it even more.

Regan and Kellan have been together since the start of the apocalypse, he was her older brother best friend, and when their families all died, he took care of her.  Nine years later her at 21 and him at 24 Regan is discovering that Kellan is a man, a handsome man.  I laughed at this and thought to myself (late bloomer there) that should have happed around 16 at the latest.  They have been living in an underground bunker with a group of people just surviving the zombie apocalypse.  In this world.  The zombies are no longer the problem other people are.

I hadn’t read Mary’s other series Broken World which this series is an offshoot of.  The setting is bleak and desolate, with a very Mad Max Fury Road feel to it (my favorite movie)  It has only been nine years since most of the world died, but the things we loved like electricity, internet, facebook, television are things of the past.  It’s an unbelievable world all about survival of the fittest.  The imagery is intense and is paired with great action and suspense.

The love story was one I enjoyed, and I was disappointed that all the buildup and it was so light on the details however the rest of the book was so phenomenal I can overlook it.  I will be reading the Broken World series next.   I am giving The Loudest Silence: A Post-Apocalyptic Zombie Novel 5 Boundless stars, I loved it.
