Every family has their issues, but for vampires, they can last for centuries.
Gareth Lloyd’s creator, Mariza, turned him into a vampire and left him to die. He has hated her ever since. Imagine his surprise when he finds out that she is in town—and is related to the Van Wilden’s. Alastor McLoughlin saved Gareth the night he turned. He can’t stomach how badly Mariza is treating Gareth, and he’d do anything for his best friend. Even kill. Morgana Van Wilden should have told Gareth about Mariza, but she has her own issues with her sister. Mariza’s arrival in the small town of Oak Wood Hills, threatens to blow their mission cover, but the bigger problem at hand is Ragnorok and his Forest Clan have gone missing. In their search for answers, the Van Wilden coven discovers the reasons for Ragnorok’s revenge.
Over Their Ashes is the second book in The Van Wilden Chronicles. Not your average vampire family. They spy, they fight, and above all, they love.
Jessica Gleave writes love stories set in fantasy worlds. In other words, she’s a genre masher. Jessica likes building fantastical make-believe worlds where her main characters fall in love. When she’s not busy writing her latest novels, she’s a busy mum of two. She lives with them and her husband along the east coast of northern New South Wales in Australia. Jessica loves nothing more than a glass of bubbly, eating chocolates, and reading a good book. Preferably all together.
After helping the Van Wildens against Randalf’s scheming and putting a spanner in Ragnoroks evil machinations, Gareth, Alistor and Ava have become a part of the Van Wilden coven. Gareth’s relationship with Morgana is going smoothly and life is looking good. He’s completely unprepared therefore, when Mariza, his egotistical creater who callously left him for dead after turning him, arrives unannounced at the Van Wilden house. Gareth is appalled to learn that she’s Oscar’s daughter from his first marriage. His relationship with Morgana suffers a setback as a result as he feels she knew all along and hid this knowledge from him. Unfortunately Morgana and her mother Vivienne, have their own reasons for hating Mariza and are on high alert in case she tries anything.
With Ragnorok regrouping, the Van Wilden’s must put their reservations about Mariza aside as they try to figure out his next move. Unfortunately, they may have underestimated the enemy within their ranks...
Over their Ashes is the second instalment of the Van Wilden Chronicle. While the first book briefly set up the world building and introduced the characters, we are given more insight into the backgrounds of the characters in this instalment. The authors decision to write in the third person from the point of view of all the characters was clever as it gave the characters more depth as opposed to only Morgana and Gareth.
We learn more about Alistor’s background. That he was from Ireland during the time of the Great Famine in which he lost his sister. In contrast to Mariza, his creator Darragh, turned him and others in order to save them. Having seen his sister starve to death, he couldn’t let the same thing happen to Gareth when he found him half dead.
We also learn about Vivienne’s struggle as a new born vampire to prevent herself from drinking Morgana’s blood. She reveals a secret that haunts her, to both Gareth and Alistair.
We finally learn about the Obscure Clan mission in which Ragnorok’s creater was staked by the Van Wildens two hundred years ago. It transpires that there is a reason that Morgana blocked the memory of that mission.
I found Mariza to be the most complex character of all as one can only wonder what must have happened to her to make her the way she is. Her confrontation with her father revealed a lot but I suspect there’s more and I hope we haven’t seen the last of her.
This was an engaging sequel to the Van Wilden Chronicles and I’m looking forward to exploring what the author has in mind in the third instalment. Ideal for fans of urban fantasy, vampires, dhampirs, hunters, mystery, betrayal, covens and secret societies

ONE EXTREMELY INTENSE RIDE!!! Explosive! Jessica is kicking up dust, directing the wind and lowering boom, racking up the chicanery, powering through anarchy and roping the antics blowing this baby wide open. Specifying every scheme, close call, snag, trip, bumble, mishap or tumble, calling the shots with constant forward progress, leveling the field, blasting this chart topping, page flipping bombshell to a whole new level. Laying out incredibly, well rounded scenario's that punch dead center with such exuberance and style, thrusting this gem into the eye of the storm, breaking it down, blasting it into a tailspin with shocking results. Bracing for the low blows, stilling the drama, riding the intrigue, battling the danger, locking the suspense as tension spirals, blazing this jewel to life stunningly. Traversing the trials and tribulations, sharp twists, sleek turns and thin lines, testing our characters in ways they could have never anticipated. The characters and scenes are strikingly sharp with abundant details and descriptions creating a colorful backdrop that makes the storyline pop. Fantastic job Jessica, thanks for sharing this bad boy with us.
Book 2 just exploded! There is a friendship, like brotherhood between Gareth and Alastor which I love in this book. Gareth Lloyd, sexy, growling and a day walking vampire has become very close to the Van Wilden family, a bit closer than he wanted to and Alastor, a day walking vampire as well, is dating a human, Ava, who have both become close with the Van Wilden family. The relationship between Morgana and Gareth escalates and the investigation on the murders, they've only just started to get some answers for. Morgana and her family are now set up and living in Oak Wood Hills for the mysterious killings have not been resolved. Gareth finds out some very disturbing news which causes some issues for him and Morgana.
The continuing story of the Van Wilden's is as intricate as it is suspenseful. You gotta hate Maritza, and while I'm disappointed in Oscar, I understand his actions. I look forward to more in the series, because things are far from settled.
I’ve been looking forward to diving back into this series. Book one had a very big WOW ending. Mariza is back and shaking things up. She’s definitely a piece of work, that one. The selfish bitch puts a wedge between Morgana and Gareth, and almost blows the Van Wildens cover. I love how we learn more about Alastor's past in this story, as well as Vivienne's struggles she faced as a newly turned vampire. The friendship between Gareth and Alastor is golden. I enjoy them as a team. Their playful banter throughout really enriches the story. So much happens in this action packed book, and many secrets are uncovered.
