The Brooklyn punk scene has never been cooler with DAZZLER’s new band taking center stage. But while she’s trying to find herself and reconnect to the one thing she’s always loved, Dazzler stumbles upon a truly toxic part of the underground punk scene. When a new and violent gang threatens the young Inhuman fans that follow her from venue to venue, Dazzler may have to turn to her own past to provide some guidance--and butt kicking.Written by the Eisner-nominated Magdalene Visaggio, and drawn by the incredible Laura Braga, REBEL SONG is an energetic epic that you won’t want to miss.
Magdalene Visaggio is a comics writer and essayist. She's the writer and creator of the GLAAD and Eisner-nominated series Kim & Kim, as well as Eternity Girl at DC Comics. She currently resides in Manhattan.
Inhumans belong in X-Men spaces, aka trans* (and the rest of the alphabet) people belong in queer spaces. Love the art, love Dazzler. I really hope to see more of her solo series.
Picked up this stand-alone Dazzler comic as I want to get into reading comics in general, but also in anticipation of the new solo Dazzler series. The art was pretty - and that’s about it. I didn’t particularly get a sense of her backstory nor purpose rather than being interested in fighting injustice towards mutants/inhumans/supernaturals no matter the categorization. Her singer to superhero abilities, with using sound to create light (for holographs and such), seem cool visually but did not play into a storyline in this comic. O would have enjoyed a narrative to accompany the art.
I don't think this is going to be one that I continue reading. I was curious about Dazzler and what her story would be about, but it didn't wow me, you know? I thought the story was good, and there was a lot in there about inclusion and being united, but it looks like the main conflict is going to be between the Mutants and the Inhumans.
From what I gathered... there's a group of mutants that thinks the Inhumans aren't really mutants themselves, even though the Terrigenesis triggered a mutation.
I was also a little confused by Colossus being there... isn't he married to Kitty Pryde now? Maybe that's another reality or universe... it's hard to keep up with sometimes! He just seemed a little too cozy with the main character. 😒
This is a nice story about Dazzler finding her place - and part of that place is not allowing tensions between mutants and inhumans to fester. While she drives around with her band from gig to gig, she welcomes all those who are outsiders - mutants and inhumans. Except some mutants who are scared of all that's happened to them, and resentful of inhumans, want to draw a clear line between mutants and inhumans and to make those shows mutant only, to use violence to drive inhumans away.
And Dazzler has to decide how to deal with this, to decide if she wants to be part of an escalation or not.
It's good, but Dazzler isn't near the top of my favorite X-Men characters - although I happen to know Mags loves her. (I got this signed, then redeemed my comixology comic, so am reading this on my Comixology app to keep the signed copy pristine.) I also suspect this is a parallel to women and trans women, knowing that the author is out and trans, and following her on twitter. (There's less of a fuss about trans men in men's spaces.) If not, there's a nice intersect and I'm considering using this in a project I want to present on fascism in comics because of that.
Anyway, yeah, this was fun, but I was hoping for more superhero stuff, and as I said, I'm not a huge Dazzler fan. I just got this signed when I purchased it at the signing. So it gets three stars, but I'd highly suggest it for Dazzler fans: a nice, thought provoking tale here.
"We must stand together, because we will always stand apart."
A strong and important message from an excellent one-shot. Marginalised communities are stronger together, and exclusionary bullshit is not acceptable.
I really like how Visaggio also explicitly and intentionally shows how important it is to aggressively and emphatically remove bigots from your scenes IMMEDIATELY when you see the first one.
What annoys me, though, is that from what I can tell, this issue hasn't been collected anywhere Which is rare in this day and age... I initially thought, given Dazzler comes back in Astonishing X-Men #14 after this, that it would be in Astonishing X-Men, Vol. 3: Until Our Heart Stops but it's not... So I'm out of ideas. If it has been collected, and you know where, please let me know!
the art in Dazzler is great and I appreciate what the writer was trying to say but the issue wasn’t handled with all the nuance it needs. Some characters made valid points about the Inhumans and got brushed off. I mean, the Inhuman royal family had just released what is basically a chemical weapon on the mutants. Is it so outrageous that mutants don’t want to have to share a space with Inhumans? But the story was solid, the Colossus cameo was pretty great and I would kill for a spinoff about the girls from the beginning they were pretty cool.
In this comic we get a stand-alone modern Dazzler story. This story addresses the Inhuman/Mutant issue. I have to say that I think Marvel's big push of Inhumans was dumb, but I like how this issue worked it into the plot. I also like that it was a stand-alone issue. We need more stand-alone stories with the big two publishers.
Great story. Dazzler is a purely fun and musical and feminine character, like Jem, and giving her a meaningful and well written story to go with that makes me want more. I hope the Dazzler hulu series is this good
