Robert Graves

Born in Wimbledon, he received his early education at King's College School and Copthorne Prep School, Wimbledon & Charterhouse School and won a scholarship to St John's College, Oxford. While at Charterhouse in 1912, he fell in love with G.H. Johnstone, a boy of fourteen ("Dick" in Goodbye to All That) When challenged by the headmaster he defended himself by citing Plato, Greek poets, Michelangelo & Shakespeare, "who had felt as I did".
At the outbreak of WWI, Graves enlisted almost immediately, taking a commission in the Royal Welch Fusiliers. He published his first volume of poems, Over the Brazier, in 1916. He developed an early reputation as a war poet and was one of the first to write realistic poems about his experience of front line conflict. In later years he omitted war poems from his collections, on the grounds that they were too obviously "part of the war poetry boom". At the Battle of the Somme he was so badly wounded by a shell-fragment through the lung that he was expected to die, and indeed was officially reported as 'died of wounds'. He gradually recovered. Apart from a brief spell back in France, he spent the rest of the war in England.
One of Graves's closest friends at this time was the poet Siegfried Sassoon, who was also an officer in the RWF. In 1917 Sassoon tried to rebel against the war by making a public anti-war statement. Graves, who feared Sassoon could face a court martial, intervened with the military authorities and persuaded them that he was suffering from shell shock, and to treat him accordingly. Graves also suffered from shell shock, or neurasthenia as it is sometimes called, although he was never hospitalised for it.
Biographers document the story well. It is fictionalised in Pat Barker's novel Regeneration. The intensity of their early relationship is nowhere demonstrated more clearly than in Graves's collection Fairies & Fusiliers (1917), which contains a plethora of poems celebrating their friendship. Through Sassoon, he also became friends with Wilfred Owen, whose talent he recognised. Owen attended Graves's wedding to Nancy Nicholson in 1918, presenting him with, as Graves recalled, "a set of 12 Apostle spoons".
Following his marriage and the end of the war, Graves belatedly took up his place at St John's College, Oxford. He later attempted to make a living by running a small shop, but the business failed. In 1926 he took up a post at Cairo University, accompanied by his wife, their children and the poet Laura Riding. He returned to London briefly, where he split with his wife under highly emotional circumstances before leaving to live with Riding in Deià, Majorca. There they continued to publish letterpress books under the rubric of the Seizin Press, founded and edited the literary journal Epilogue, and wrote two successful academic books together: A Survey of Modernist Poetry (1927) and A Pamphlet Against Anthologies (1928).
In 1927, he published Lawrence and the Arabs, a commercially successful biography of T.E. Lawrence. Good-bye to All That (1929, revised and republished in 1957) proved a success but cost him many of his friends, notably Sassoon. In 1934 he published his most commercially successful work, I, Claudius. Using classical sources he constructed a complexly compelling tale of the life of the Roman emperor Claudius, a tale extended in Claudius the God (1935). Another historical novel by Graves, Count Belisarius (1938), recounts the career of the Byzantine general Belisarius.
During the early 1970s Graves began to suffer from increasingly severe memory loss, and by his eightieth birthday in 1975 he had come to the end of his working life. By 1975 he had published more than 140 works. He survived for ten more years in an increasingly dependent condition until he died from heart

LO CUNTO DE LO CUNTO
Racconto, neppure particolarmente lungo, più che novella o romanzo breve. Ricorda tante belle cose create da Orson Welles, affabulatore e illusionista (Welles amava i giochi di magia nei quali era piuttosto bravo – il 30 ottobre del 1938 Welles ha terrorizzato milioni di radioascoltatori simulando un attacco alieno che in realtà era solo la lettura di “La guerra dei mondi”, il romanzo di H.G.Wells), ma non è altrettanto divertente.
Si menziona la fabula milesia (https://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fabula_...) e il “Doppio sogno” di Arthur Schnitzler (che fu pubblicato tre anni prima di questo). Rispetto al testo di Schnitzler, qui la psicanalisi, che come nell’altro impregna e sostiene la narrazione, qui la psicanalisi sembra piuttosto irrisa, piuttosto che oggetto di rispetto e interesse.
Racconto nel racconto, gioco di scatole cinesi, di rimandi, gioco di specchi, sogno e veglia si rincorrono, si scambiano, si sovrappongono, si confondono, sconfinano l’uno nell’altra, così come pazzia e sanità, follia e normalità, mente sana e mente disturbata.
L’urlo del titolo è pratica sciamanica degli aborigeni australiani presso i quali il narratore urlatore ha passato un lungo periodo della sua esistenza (prima di essere rinchiuso in manicomio presumibilmente). Ma non è l’unico aspetto magico: il possesso di un oggetto consente ad alcuni, come il narratore urlatore, di entrare in possesso dell’anima del proprietario di quell’oggetto (per esempio, la fibbia di una scarpa).
Non c’è da meravigliarsi visto che l’ubicazione dell’anima è posta fuori del corpo, per l’appunto in oggetti, come per esempio una pietra.
Un paio di aspetti che mi sono particolarmente piaciuti.
Il narratore, che racconta in modo piuttosto razionale, ma è un matto (e un gran mattacchione) (non per niente la cornice della storia è ambientata proprio in un manicomio durante una partita di cricket tra pazienti – sport particolarmente indicato perché è così difficile riconoscere i giocatori di una squadra da quelli dell’altra), motiva la ‘verità’ del suo racconto nel modo seguente:
La mia è una storia vera dalla prima all’ultima sillaba. Guardi che quando dico che la mia è una storia “vera” mi riferisco se non altro al fatto che la racconto sotto una nuova veste. La storia è sempre la stessa ma certe volte modifico il momento culminante e arrivo perfino a ridistribuire le parti. Variazioni che ne conservano la freschezza e perciò stesso la verità. Se mi servissi sempre della stessa formula, non ci metterebbe molto a tediare e diventare falsa. È mio interesse invece mantenere la vivacità, ed è una storia vera, dalla prima all’ultima sillaba.
La “verità”, dunque, risiede nel come, non nel cosa. Se il come è la Forma, la verità non può che essere Arte.
Il secondo è l’elemento del titolo originale, l’urlo. Non lo si sente mai – se ne parla, lo si minaccia, si incute paura attraverso l’urlo, se ne descrivono gli effetti, ma il momento dell’urlo è sempre saltato a piè pari.
Il film è di quarant’anni fa (1978), in originale intitolato come il racconto “The Shout” (e più o meno nel resto del mondo), ma con una capriola commerciale, della quale mi sfugge il senso e la necessità, diventa “L’australiano” qui da noi. Magnifico cast: titanico Alan Bates nel ruolo di colui che possiede la conoscenza dell’urlo e sa metterla in pratica; la coppia che lo accoglie è composta dal sempre magnifico, e mai abbastanza rimpianto, John Hurt, e Susannah York; Tim Curry, che solo tre anni prima aveva sbancato il botteghino col Dr Frank’N’Furter di “The Rocky Horror Picture Show”.
Il regista polacco, Jerzy Skolimowski, di film belli ne ha realizzati diversi: questo non è il migliore, ma ha atmosfera e interpretazioni notevoli.

Sogno o son desto?
66 pagine, compresa l’ottima Postfazione di Ottavio Fatica.
Un racconto molto ben riuscito dall’effetto straniante, inquietante, intrigante.
Un racconto enigmatico dove ci si smarrisce, ci si confonde, ci si perde.
Una favola nera in cui sono rispettate tutte le premesse, fino all’irrompere dell’inatteso.
Psicanalisi, mito greco, metafisica, inconscio, terrore, realtà, sogno, pazzia… e se nonostante tutto questo si trattasse solo di un gioco?

The Shout is a classically informed story of the occult; a narrative draped in the laurels of Freud and despite occurring before the advent of mass society the story maintains a resonance today. One could read it as a the Devil on a cricket pitch or the consequences of a cult of personality on a young rustic marriage. Either way I found it effective and sufficiently incomplete to leave one uneasy. Extremely atmospheric, Graves tosses out narrative with a pinched stubbornness. Returning home from work I felt a need for a reading comfort, something I could hug and then collapse over.

Durante una partita di cricket in un prato antistante una casa di cura per alienati, uno dei degenti non partecipanti al gioco, l'ambiguo Crossley, svela a un giovane visitatore che si intrattiene con lui a segnare i punti della partita, di aver imparato dagli aborigeni australiani a emettere un urlo disumano in grado di uccidere e di averlo messo in atto, lasciando quanto meno perplesso l'interlocutore; Crossley si dilunga poi in un racconto per confermare le sue capacità...Abilmente sospeso tra realtà e fantasia, tra fiaba e horror, paure ancestrali e ciarlataneria, il racconto tiene inchiodati alla sua breve lettura in un misto di scetticismo e credulità. Davvero intrigante!

This collection is divided into three sections: English Stories, Roman Stories, and Majorcan Stories. The first story, 'The Shout', is probably the strangest, and revolves around a character who claims to be able to kill anyone simply by shouting. Although this seems a far from promising basis for a film, it was apparently made into a good movie starring Alan Bates.
Many of the stories here are humorous and a few of them are rather slight, but the author's vivid descriptions of people and places and his flawless prose style mean the book is a total pleasure throughout. My favourite stories included 'Old Papa Johnson', and a number of the Majorcan ones towards the end - 'The Viscountess and the Short-Haired Girl', 'A Toast to Ava Gardner', 'The Lost Chinese', etc.
Intriguingly, Graves claims in his intro that almost all of the stories are true.

BBC Radio 4 FM - 11 December 1986: Charles Crossley believes he has the power to 'shout' people to death, to split their souls into pieces. During a country cricket match between the patients of the lunatic asylum where he resides and the local villagers, he tells the story of his magical powers and the effect it had on a local couple, Richard and Rachel, who inadvisedly invited him to their home.

Robert Graves: poeta, romanziere storico e soprattutto uno dei più grandi saggisti di sempre della mitologia greca e non, se ne uscì nel 1929 con questo piccolo racconto onirico inquietante dalla durata di 40 pagine. Sia durante che a fine lettura lascia totalmente confuso e baisto il lettore di turno. È un opera totalmente fuori dalla sua produzione tipica.
Per il tema principale dell'urlo Graves si lascio ispirare da, ovviamente neanche a dirlo, dalla mitologia, da Freud e da due eventi che gli capitarono durante la quotidianità.
Il racconto è un continuo sogno nel sogno, c'è un cambio di prospettiva continuo. Il punto principale è capire se il personaggio di turno si è davvero svegliato la mattina o è intrappolato ancora in una specie di sogno o se è semplicemente impazzito.
La celebre frase di quest'opera: "ammesso che si possa riconoscere l'anima di un altro essere umano, non è mai dato riconoscere la propria". È la chiave per capire il testo. Non ci è dato sapere mai se la nostra visione della realtà sia corretta oppure no.

"The Shout" gilt als eine der wichtigsten Kurzgeschichten des britischen Schiftstellers Robert Graves. Ein namenloser Ich-Erzähler betätigt sich als Anschreiber bei einem Cricketspiel einer Irrenanstalt und bekommt von einem Insassen, Charles Crossley, eine Geschichte aus dessen Leben dargeboten: Als unheimliche Kraft dringt Crossley zunächst in die Träume, dann in das Leben des Ehepaars Rachel und Richard ein. Dabei spielt ein tödlicher Schrei, den Crossley bei den Aborigines erlernt haben will, ebenso eine Rolle, wie Liebe, Eifersucht, Wahnsinn und Steine als Ort der menschlichen Seele.
Es mag daran liegen, dass ich die Geschichte in deutscher Übersetzung gelesen habe, aber schlau bin ich daraus nicht geworden. Die einzelnen Elemente wirken beunruhigend, aber auch - vielleicht gewollt - zusammenhangslos. Kein Text, den ich ein weiteres Mal lesen würde.

It's a nice interesting story. Is it an occult tale of a man with supernatural powers to meld people to his will or kill them with a shout. Well, it is certainly an unreliable narrator, the inmate of an asylum met a cricket match. This frames a story of the beach - souls in stones, killing shouts in the dunes and a woman controlled through her shoe buckle. All good fun.

Mi era stato spacciato per un capolavoro incredibile e disturbante, cosa che per me non è stato. Credo di non avere gli strumenti per valutarlo correttamente, non conoscendo nulla di psicanalisi e probabilmente questo ha limitato la mia comprensione del testo.

Allucinogeno e allucinante. Carino per chi ha voglia di uscire dalla realtà, libro veloce e senza impegno, niente di eclatante. Scrittura veloce e chiara, sicuramente mette curiosità ma non ti lascia attaccata alle pagine per sapere il continuo. Sicuramente trama della storia originale
