This week I ready the Goblin Star series by Gama Ray Martinez. This is a fantasy set in space, and I loved every second of it.

The Series Includes:
Nova Dragon (Goblin Star Book 1)
Runestone Fleet (Goblin Star Book 2)
Twinsun Sea (Goblin Star Book 3)
Starbound Soul (Goblin Star Book 4)

There were multiple times during this series that I burst out laughing, then had to apologize to the people around me. I especially loved the character development, and how much the friendship between the main characters grew and changed as they became more mature.

The entire premise of the series (dragons and other mythical races in space!!!) was an absolute delight. And I loved how the magic system was set up for this universe. I would really like to write in this universe, in fact.

These were written for children (middle school or so), but I loved them very much as an adult. I had zero issues adding them to my kids’ kindle library, and I would highly recommend you get them for your kids!

3.5, which is what I have the first one as well, I think? This series is just such a good time! Sure, it's full of shockingly capable kids, but I feel like it makes more sense in this one bc they have more...leverage? Power? Backing? Idk, but it works. I liked the addition of a third person in their merry band of disastrous...ness...lol. In the first book, I was annoyed by the whole, "do you have a better idea?" thing, but this time I laughed whenever it came up 🤣

I love how many different people/races/creatures (?) are brought into this series, but I'm obviously partial to the dragons. Because, dragons 🐉 I think these books would do well as a sort of series binge read - there was minimal recapping before radek and ovian started getting into trouble (like, immediately in the middle of things haha). I have book 3 and def have to get 4. I'm still so glad I ended up winning nova dragon (book 1) in a giveaway!

I am really enjoying this SFF series, and even though it’s technically a middle-grade book, it is still engaging for someone like me who absolutely loves high fantasy. Sure, this is completely different than the vast majority of fantasy out there, but it’s fun, fast-paced, and exciting.

In particular, The Runestone Fleet was a fun ride, full of new adventures and a new MC thrown into the mix, who I hope continues to make her strong presence known. The characters are fun to get to know, the action is fast, and the whole book was enjoyable.

I’ll be having my kids read these when they’re older (1st grade is probably too low a reading level, after all), and I’m glad to be able to read them myself. Definitely looking forward to the rest of the series!
