Theorizing a New Agenda for An Anthology of Architectural Theory collects in a single volume the most significant essays on architectural theory of the last thirty years. A dynamic period of reexamination of the discipline, the postmodern era produced widely divergent and radical viewpoints on issues of making, meaning, history, and the city. Among the paradigms presented are architectural postmodernism, phenomenology, semiotics, poststructuralism, deconstruction, and feminism. By gathering these influential articles from a vast array of books and journals into a comprehensive anthology, Kate Nesbitt has created a resource of great value. Indispensable to professors and students of architecture and architectural theory, Theorizing a New Agenda also serves practitioners and the general public, as Nesbitt provides an overview, a thematic structure, and a critical introduction to each essay. The list of authors in Theorizing a New Agenda reads like a "Who's Who" of contemporary architectural Tadao Ando, Giulio Carlo Argan, Alan Colquhoun, Jacques Derrida, Peter Eisenman, Marco Frascari, Kenneth Frampton, Diane Ghirardo, Vittorio Gregotti, Karsten Harries, Rem Koolhaas, Christian Norberg-Schulz, Aldo Rossi, Colin Rowe, Thomas Schumacher, Ignasi de Sol -Morales Rubi , Bernard Tschumi, Robert Venturi and Denise Scott Brown, and Anthony Vidler. A bibliography and notes on all the contributors are also included.
This was a required book for my theory class in school. I think people's main frustration would be the jargon. There's plenty of it used unsparingly.
You'll enjoy the points being made if you don't take them as fact but instead use them as topic matter for exploration and critical thought in new design/concept ideas.
It's a great resource book, especially if you're going in to the written side/conceptual side of the architecture industry. It's a book you'll reference off the shelf a lot. It's also a good introduction book to architectural theory or theory books in general. So if that isn't your cup of tea, this book will feel over saturated and a be a bit irritating to read.
While the individual essays may vary in quality, Nesbitt's anthology provides a good overview of post modern thought on architectural theory. Organized by subjects of the essays rather than chronologically, this book includes essays on deconstructivism, historicism, phenomenology, critical regionalism, the roles of politics and ethics, tectonics, and much more. Granted, it's also important to recognise the limits of an anthology such as this one in that it is in no way a conclusive collection. In reading this, one must be cognizant of the presence of other, less known, less accepted theories.
Sure, the signal-to-noise ratio is low, but that's always the case with these things. For me the handful of great essays makes up for it. And don't hate me for liking Peter Eisenman's essays.
I have not read the full book, only a handful of chapters as required reading for architecture school. It feel very convoluted and sometimes may not make any sense but within all of that you’ll find Juhani Pallasmaa’s The Geometry of Feeling and suddenly you’ll make sense of it all.
Good reference. Although I did enjoy reading between the lines, I did read it as a requirement for a course subject. So, I doubt I'll revisit it anytime soon. Rich content too.
